At 60 mph on freeway the timing belt broke. I lost power and control of the car. It cannot be started. Since the repair cost is too high (more than $2000), and my VIN is not included in the gm recall #06074, I had to junk the car. The car is dangerous to drivers. Gm is not willing to recall all 2001 l200. However, due to so many complains of the same problems from drivers of the 2001 Saturn l200 (whose cars are not included in the recall) NHTSA should force gm to recall all 2011 Saturn l200.
The contact owns a 2002 Saturn l200 (n/a). The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the battery warning light illuminated and then there was a loud noise. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the timing belt chain fractured due to no oil in the engine. The manufacturer was not made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 144,872.
Vehicle stopped after turning onto the road, engine had stalled and would not crank or start up again; battery and oil lights came on. You could see the serpentine belt when trying to crank so it was not a battery issue. Fuel tank was full and oil was changed a month prior. Mechanics confirmed the timing chain had snapped/broken and destroyed many of the internal engine components. $2000 cost to replace/fix the individual parts, $2600 to just get another used engine.
The timing chain is loose and slapping the engine. There had been noise intermittently coming from the engine for the last few months. Upon repair, the mechanic replaced the alternator and tension rod pulley system. That made the problem worse and then they found that it was not the cause of the noise. The timing chain behind the motor is loose and slapping the engine creating the noise. The mechanic found the recall on the timing chain when trying to order it. Local gm dealer says my car is not covered under the recall. It is a 2001 Saturn l series.

I had just gone to the gas station to fill up my 2000 Saturn lw2 when I was about two blocks from the gas station. I was right around the corner from my house, and had just turned right onto a street with a hill. Suddenly, my car started sputtering so I immediately tried to pull over. I wasn't completely out of the street when I suddenly lost all power brakes and power steering going down the hill at 25 miles per hour. I couldn't stop the car so I put it in park, which stopped it instantly, causing my neck to jerk, which has been sore from whiplash for the past four days so far. I had the car towed to the mechanic who found bits of my timing belt all through the motor, which blew the entire engine. After hearing that it would be over $3,000 for a used engine installed, we've been trying to determine our next move, financially.
Heard this strange noise coming from my engine. . . Not sure what it was. Drove a little ore about a mile ad the noise got louder decided to pull over, shut off my car. Tried to turn it back over to see if the noise continued and it would not turn over. Had my car towed to mechanic and was told it was the timing chain (belt). $1000. 00 bill. I find out there was a recall on certain VIN's and hundreds more after that complained and nothing is done. That's crap! I am the second owner. . . The car has only 100,000 on a car that is 11 years old. I have my oil changed every 3000 miles and serviced all the time. I believe this car has a faulty timing chain and I have to pay for it when it is clearly the manufacturers fault. Does someone have to have a fire or die to be covered. . . It seems that is what your looking for! could someone please advise!.
Was driving down the highway when turning right at a stop sign my car just stopped pulled over to the side. Had it towed and was told the timing belt went out and it caused it to break the vals in the car as well have had this car for 10 years so its been a good one for the most part.
We were driving the car when it cut off unexpectedly with no warning, while we were going 70 in a pack of traffic. Luckily, we managed to get to the shoulder without a wreck. It would not restart. We had it towed to the mechanic who said the timing belt broke which in turn cause the engine to be damaged. We had to replace the engine as a result.
I was driving down a local street in my hometown. I was doing the speed limit and just cruising when all of a sudden I lost all power in my car. I didn't actually notice until I went to push the gas pedal and received no response from my engine. I was able to keep control of the car and get to the side of the road. After looking under the hood and not being able to identify the problem I called my insurance company and they dispatched a tow truck. After getting the car home I called a local mechanic friend of mine hoping he could give me a diagnosis after taking the engine cover off we were able to visibly see that the chain on the left side of my engine was broken. After seeing that he pretty much said I'm looking at a broken timing belt and possibly valve and piston damage. In the end it was obvious that my engine was not fixable.
The contact owns a 2001 Saturn l200. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph when the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic where the failure was located at the engine timing belt. The mechanic advised that the timing belt was fractured and caused the engine motor to fail. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 200,000. Updated 06/05/lj updated 6/06/2012.
The contact owns a 2000 Saturn Ls. While driving approximately 35 mph the contact heard a ticking noise in the engine. The noise was heard while driving various speeds. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed the noise was coming from the timing belt located in the engine. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
Gm recall #06074 towed to dealer pine belt chevy lakewood n. J. Dealer refuses to make the repairs says theirs a VIN# brake where this # does not cover recall repair from gm I just think they do not want to repair the vehicle .
I purchased a 2001 Saturn l200 in November 2010 in Jan 2011 the timing belt broke I had it repaired at the car lot where I bought the car while getting the repairs the mechanic found problems with the valves they sent them to a head shop to be shaved when I got the car back it was running real ruff & loud so I took it back after the repairs from the noise the car didn't have the pulling power as before after a week went by the car wouldn't start I took car back to mechanic and he said it needed a power pack he replaced it then a month or two past when I noticed a oil leak where I park I checked the oil there was no oil in the car it had all leaked out I put 3 quarts of oil in the car in 2 to 3 days I was putting more oil in the car so about every 4 days I was adding oil I took car to 3 mechanics they all told me something different after getting a 4th opinion I had a mechanic to repair the rear main seal, after about a week I notice more oil leaking in the same spots I haven't been able to take car back because the car had a gear cord to break I had it repaired temporary now it is not changing gears at all unless I go under the hood to change it its been one problem after another since I drove this car off the lot I was told by an attorney they couldn't help me because I bought the car as is no warranty and it didn't fall under the lemon law.
The contact owns a 2001 Saturn l200. The timing chain broke immediately after the vehicle was started. A mechanic inspected the vehicle and stated that the timing belt needed to be replaced. Nhtsa recall 07v519000, engine and engine cooling was related to the failure per gm recall#06074. After calling the manufacturer, he was told that his VIN was not included in the recall. The failure and current mileages were 87,000.
My 2001 Saturn l-200 had the timing chain break (with only 52,000 miles on it). While driving home from work, car was acting erratic. Made me nervous so I got out of heavy traffic and onto a side street. Car quit in the center of an intersection while making a left-hand turn. Fortunately, this happened in a residential neighborhood and the other cars were able to slow down and get around me with no problem. As so many others have stated, Saturn says my car was not one of the ones included in their premature timing belt failure recall; they'd be happy to fix it, but at my expense. I know Saturn is on its way out, but hopefully other Saturn owners can be made aware of this so they can have their timing chains checked out before their car conks out and someone gets hurt.
The contact owns a 2001 Saturn l200. While driving in reverse at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled and would not restart. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the engine did not have any compression. The engine would have to be replaced at the cost of $7,200. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the timing chain failed, which caused the engine to fail. He was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall for the timing chain and was advised to return the vehicle to the dealer for further assistance. The manufacturer stated that no compensation would be provided because the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 120,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Saturn l2 wagon. The contact stated that the timing chain failed inside the motor. As a result, the vehicle stalled and was towed to a repair shop. There were no warning lights illuminated prior to the failure. The dealer stated that they would not assist. The failure mileage was 84,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Saturn l series. While driving approximately 5 mph, the vehicle experienced excessive hesitation. The contact immediately turned off the ignition. The engine failed to restart after several attempts and the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for inspection. The mechanic stated that the timing belt failed and recommenced that the engine be replaced. The VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 07v519000 (engine and engine cooling), although the failures were identical. Currently, the engine is being replaced. The failure and current mileages were 66,103.
The contact owns a 2002 Saturn l200. While driving 45 mph, the contact attempted to make a turn and the vehicle shut off without warning. The vehicle had to pushed off of the road and towed to a repair shop. The mechanic stated that the timing chain failed. The manufacturer stated that there were no open recalls. The current and failure mileages were 67,000.
2002 Saturn l300 . Have followed all maint. Guidelines. Though it is on it's third battery, third set of tires, power steering pump replaced, timing belt replaced, ecm replaced, two catalytic converters replaced, the list goes on and on. Less than 90,000 miles. Drove the car. Got out, pushed the keyless alarm ( original factory) got dinner, pushed the keyless entry, got into the car , turned the key. . And the car was dead. Car does not start. Locked in park, had to have it towed. Tow truck driver had to use the dolly lifts to move the car, so he could position it to be able to tow it. Had it towed to a service garage, they followed gm's instructions . . No luck. The car had to be towed again , to a Saturn dealership ( the only ones who have the codes) to reset the vehicle. They told me they could not reset it. Told me it needs a new bcm. Stated ecm and bcm are unable to communicate. So that until the module is replaced the car is inoperable. Stated they knew the bcm's go bad, stated they have had alot of these go bad ( alot)???. The service tech stated " they are like a computer hard drive on steroids" . Stated they burn out with no way to check them or fix them. He said they should be able tofix the car. But they do not keep any bcm in stock. It will be a week before they can get the part. After replacing the bcm I was told the cars information will not be accurate. They told me the odometer goes back to zero. How can that be the dealer just turn back the odometer isn't that illegal? I was told that sometimes there maybe some other issues also after installing a new bcm?? if they know that the bcm is a problem, and that when it goes bad, the car is completely useless! why isn't something being done ! you are at the mercy of Saturn / gm because no one else is allowed to fix the car. I will now be waiting a week for my vehicle to be repaired. Only to hope it runs correctly after it's repaired.
The contact owns a 2002 Saturn l200. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning. The vehicle was towed to a local repair shop and the mechanic noticed that the timing chain failed and caused the engine to blow out. The contact called the manufacturer regarding the failure, but nothing has been resolved. She feels that the vehicle is unsafe because there is a recall for the 2001 l200 regarding the timing chain. The current and failure mileages were 80,000.
The contact owns a 2002 Saturn l100. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic, who stated that the timing belt failed. The mechanic also stated that it should not have failed at only six years old and with less then 75,000 miles. The dealer advised her to bring in the vehicle for a diagnosis. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 07v519000 (engine and engine cooling), although the failures were identical. Currently, the vehicle is still at the dealer being inspected. The failure and current mileages were 79,003.
Without warning, the timing belt broke on our 2000 Saturn Ls, and destroyed the engine. It happened on the highway, and the car stalled. We had to have it towed approx. 50 miles home, and estimated repairs are $1000 for parts alone.
I have a 2002 l200 Saturn which has 97,000 miles. Three days ago while I was driving the car on a city street the engine just shut off. Luckily I was able to coast into an empty parking meter space. If this had happened a mere five minutes before, when I was on a traffic-packed interstate, I would have been in very serious trouble. My Saturn was towed to the dealership and they explained that the timing chain had broke and damaged the engine cylinder heads. They stated it would cost me $2,800 to fix the damage. This makes me extremely upset as I bought this Saturn brand new from a Saturn dealership. I have taken very good care of this car and have performed all the Saturn required maintenance in a timely fashion from the same Saturn dealership. I feel that Saturn should be held accountable for fixing this problem. I have performed some online research and there are many other individuals reporting timing chain or timing belt problems with their Saturns. I know one recall (for the 2001 year I believe) is already in place. Please start a recall for the other years as well. Saturn needs to acknowledge that many individuals are being negatively impacted by these timing chain/belt problems.
Please see #dp08002 this is the exact problem that my mechanic told me that I have. Essentially, the timing chain components are poorly designed and create the need to replace the entire engineer when the timing belt components fail.
My car has service light on. My lights flicker. Saturn has a recall on timing belt and Saturn company says my car is not in a recall.
There was no warning. , no noise, no warning lights. The car did not start in the morning Saturn said the chain belt broke and damaged engine. I have read many complaints concerning the timing belt and it's poor design. Gm has denied any complaints and stated that odi publishes bogus reports.
The contact owns a 2001 Saturn l200. While driving 25 mph, the timing belt detached from the vehicle. The vehicle has not been repaired and was not included in the recall. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The vehicle has not yet been repaired. The current and failure mileages were 117,000.
I was backing out of a parking spot and my 2002 l200 stalled after a rattling sound from the engine. I had the car towed to the Saturn dealership in marietta, georgia. They diagnosed that the timing belt had slipped/broke and had damaged the engine. They also said that the engine would need to be replaced and the timing belt on these cars was a known issue. I had Saturn perform the engine replacement end of October, beginning of November 2008 for approximately $5000. I've since come to realize that there was a recall on Saturn l200s from the same time period for the exact same problem. They've claimed that my VIN doesn't fall under the recall. I feel that I should be reimbursed for the cost of the engine replacement based on the defective part being a known issue and my car exhibiting the exact same issue that a recall was submitted. Updated 09/10/14.
The car was idling really rough earlier in the day. I was going to the dealership to have it looked at but only got a few feet before the car died. It tries to turn over but no luck. A mechanic friend said it seems to be the timing belt. After review on this and other websites I tend to agree. It's been towed to the dealership and I'm awaiting my diagnosis. If it is in fact the timing belt and Saturn knew about this problem why didn't they fix it? a recall would be great but if not that at least notify us of the problem so we can decide whether or not to have it fixed. I'm really upset that this could have happened with my 4 year old and 5 month old in the car with me. Do something Saturn!!.
The contact owns a 2001 Saturn l series. While driving less than 50 mph, the rpms decreased and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle could not be restarted and was towed to an independent mechanic. It was discovered that the timing belt failed. The mechanic stated that the motor could have possibly been damaged from the timing belt failure. The failure and current mileages were less than 120,000.
I was driving on the pennsylvania turnpike at 65 mph at night. When suddenly I heard a noise in the engine and the car immediately starting slowing down. I nearly was involved in accident with two tractor trailers trying to make to the side of the road. This is the first time I had a timing belt brake. I took the car to Saturn, they replaced the head asm,core-head, gasket as, chain pgk, seal asm, bolt asm, gasket-en, bolt-6, and bolt hv. The total repair cost was $2,780. 34.
The contact owns a 2002 Saturn l200. While driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle lost power and the battery warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel. The vehicle was inspected by a local service shop and they stated that the timing chain failed, which caused the valve in the engine to fail also. The dealer stated that the repair would cost $2,300. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 60,000.
