Rear Suspension Problems of Saturn LS

Saturn LS owners have reported 13 problems related to rear suspension (under the suspension category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Rear Suspension problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 06/20/2006

Continuous cupping of rear tires due to an engineering defect. Shims placed in rear of car. The cupping has continued causing dangerous wearing of the tires at one point, the tread was beginning to separate from the core after a highway trip. Saturn told me that they corrected the problem with the shims. The fourth set of tires in 90,000 miles is now placed on the car because on the continuing cupping.

2 Rear Suspension problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 06/15/2006

I purchased a 2001 Saturn lw200 new from Saturn of greenville, SC. My tire dealer upon checking alignment discovered that the rear camber (which is not adjustable) was out of spec. I had the Saturn dealer check this & they verified it. I think this is an assembly or design defect. However, the Saturn dealer wanted approximately $500 to retrofit a kit that would fix the problem. Obviously, Saturn is aware of the problem but will not take responsibility for dealing with it.

3 Rear Suspension problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 01/13/2006

The rear of my Saturn lw200 wagon is making my tires wear out prematurely. It's causing the inside tread edge to wear out before the rest. Saturn wants to charge me 235 to do an alignment and put in a spacer kit which I understand is a factory defect from the beginning. Saturn should pay for this and my tires.

4 Rear Suspension problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 06/03/2005

I had a blowout on the rear, driver-side tire. When I took it to the tire shop to get a new one, the technician had to replace both rear tires due to wear on the inside of both rear tires. They advised me to get an alignment. The alignment shop found out about a servive bulletin #00-t-72a issued in July 2002 regarding a problem with the rear suspension. Both the rear tires lean in at the top. I took the car to the Saturn dealer to get it fixed, but they told me that it was not a recall and it would not be repaired free of charge. I want to know the difference between a recall and a service bulletin and why a service bulletin is not considered a "defect" in the vehicle. There were no injuries caused, but if the tire had blown out during my out of town trip the night before there could have been or even worse. The inside of both the rear tires was so worn that both were showing the steel belts. Thank you, louise a. Leader.

6 Rear Suspension problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 06/08/2004

I own two 2001 Saturns, an l300 and a lw300, both purchased at Saturn of silver spring. Both of these cars have eaten rear tires on a regular basis. The dealer maintained that I didn't rotate tires enough. I previously never had a fwd car that ate rear tires. Fortunately I regularly prematurely replaced tires before cupping led to blowouts. I believe that the fix outlined in service bulletin number: 00t72a NHTSA item number: 633545 should result in a manufacturer recall before someone gets killed in an accident as a result of this obvious defect.

7 Rear Suspension problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 06/06/2004

Rear tires failed well within their expected mileage and had to be replaced, along with a rear-end alignment. This should be a recall issue for all 2001 Saturn l300 owners. Make: Saturn model: l-series year: 2001 service bulletin number: 00t72a NHTSA item number: 633545 summary description: subject regarding service manual update for chassis service manuals regarding alignment specifications and service procedure for installation of spacers between rear suspension support and vehicle body when performing wheel alignment.

8 Rear Suspension problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 09/22/2003

2001 Saturn, purchased June 2001, had to replace rear tires twice due to alignment problems. Currently I have about 41000 miles on the l300. The tires were firestone affinity. Also the drivers seat has shifted to the right, dealer will not repair under warranty. The deck lid is misaligned and after several attempts, it is still not right.

9 Rear Suspension problem of the 2002 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 07/15/2003

The tires on my 2002 Saturn lw300 wore out at an excessive rate, requiring replacement at 22,000 miles. I brought my car into the dealership describing steering wheel vibration at high speed and excessively worn tires. Although the symptoms I described met the symptoms in existing tsbs for my vehicle, the Saturn dealer ignored these and until I did research to find the tsbs, was not going to cover this under warranty. From my research, the excessive wear on the tires is far from an isolated incident and adversely affects the performance, and therefore safety, of the vehicle. The dealer also informed me that there was "cupping" on my rear tires making them out of round. While there is a TSB out for this incident, certain Saturn dealers are choosing to ignore this even when customers report the problems directly related to the tsbs. Since this is a known issue to Saturn and is related to the configuration of the suspension and Saturn's selection for tires (firestone affinity hps), there should be a recall on the vehicle to correct the manufacturer's defect, and avert future safety issues relating to low tire traction. Furthermore, the fact that this tire wear occurs at such an early period in the car's life that many consumers will not even know that they have worn out tires until they have a failure leading to an accident. Thankfully that did not happen in my case but tread life is not something I would normally be checking on a car with 22,000 miles because there is no reason for tires on a new car to wear out at 22,000 miles.

10 Rear Suspension problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 11/09/2002

At 12000 miles I took my l200 Saturn in for routine service and was informed that the rear wheels were out of alignment and the tires (2) were choppy. They replaced the tires and did the alignment at no charge. I inquired as to why this happened and was informed that it was a problem with this model Saturn because of the light weighted rear end of the car. I am not sure that this is or is not a safety problem?? I notified Saturn CO and they filed my complaint under reference # 1-4597347, and stated the man made components may require repair or replacement. That I understand, but what I don't know is if this is a safety problem. Is ongoing, and that I must assume the costs, or a problem that requires a recall to correct the wheel alignment problem? or could this result in a buy back etc. . . . ? please advise. Thank you. 11 Rear Suspension problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 10/20/2002

The Saturn l-200 has a rear suspension problem. I know there is a service bulletin out there somewhere, but Saturn is neglecting to acknowledge this problem no matter if the car is in or out of warranty. It makes the car unsafe to drive, and could very easily cause loss of control.

12 Rear Suspension problem of the 2000 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 07/17/2002

While driving, both rear wheel sidewalls wore out. Replaced tires 3 times in 2 years. Dealer notified/repaired and replaced tires. Consumer states that the dealer has attempted to remedy this problem on four occasions, however vehicle experiences vibration while driving, Saturn has identified a manufacturing flaw in the way the rear suspension is mounted to the chassis of the vehicle, this causes the rear tires to erode, vibration is felt mostly in the steering wheel.

13 Rear Suspension problem of the 2000 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 01/09/2001

Car vibrates at 55 - 70 always. It wears tires out. Several new sets of tires worn out. It has had several front end alignments, tire balances. Nothing works. Ur local Saturn dealer recognizes there is a problem and has told me that it needs to have rear shimms installed and that a local auto store can do it at a price of 250. 00 per axle! and maybe that willl fix it!.
