1 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 02/07/2014

While driving home my car just stopped in the middle of the road. I had no idea what happened or what was wrong, it just stopped with no warning, right before it stopped it made a noise unfamiliar to me but it sounded as if the brakes had fallen off or something. I had to get my car towed at my own cost. I found a mechanic that would come out and take a look at it because I had it towed to my house. Apparently my timing chain was to loose and kept hitting something else and over time the chain broke and what it was hitting was damaged so I had to replace both and because the engine had to be dropped to get to replace, it cost me $1800. 00 out my pocket also they informed me that the rack and pinion will have to be done also. If this is a recall issue I would like to be reimbursed for the cost. Thanks.

2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 05/23/2006

I purchased this 2001 Saturn Ls 4 cylinder sedan off-lease car from my local Saturn dealer in July of 2004 with approximately 21,000 miles on the car. I found out after the purchase that it received a new rack and pinion, new front brakes and new front tires after purchasing the car. This car has now had three rack and pinions fail and the fourth on has just been installed. The car has 76,000 miles on at this time and the 55,000 miles I have put on it in less than two years have been primarily highway miles. I am now thinking about contacting gm corporate directly. This is getting costly and ridiculous!.

3 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 12/28/2004

Currently the blower motor for the heater/defroster is not working. I have had many many problems with this car, inparticular with the brakes and steering. The rack and pinion was repaired twice. I have had brakes replaced twice, and recently the brake drums, rotators and pads. I have had the power steering pump repaired and from time to time need to have the steering wheel lubricated when it starts to make noise again. I am wondering if I am the only one with these problems or are others with this same car having the same problems. I do not feel safe when I am driving this car. I have brought it to the dealer many times to have things checked with wheels and steering.

4 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 07/20/2004

While under warrenty my Saturn l200 had "growlilng noise:"while steering, Saturn fixed power steering. Approx 18mo later growling noise returned and was diagnosed as rack and pinion steering failure, not covered, cost $1400. Car had only 50000miles on at the time of steering failure.

5 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 10/16/2003

I have a 2000 Ls1 Saturn. I bought it brand new. In the past year I have had to take it in other than for maintenance because something has gone wrong. October 2002- my hydraulics went out of my clutch causing me to be stalled without a car. A few months ago it was recalled due to something gone wrong in the rear axle. So Saturn replaced it. On Thursday, October 16, 2003, I took it in again because I was hearing a rubbing noise when I made sharp left turns. Turns out I need a $1400 new steering rack because there is an internal leak from my power steering fluid. My car only has 36,800 miles on it. But of course the warranty ran out 800 miles ago. I don't think a fairly new car should be having all these problems.

6 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2001 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 09/15/2003

Grinding noise when turning left or right. 'sounds' like it comes from tire area. Independent mechanic states that strut is leaking & car requires new rack & pinion steering at 41k miles. Problem is continuous.

7 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2000 Saturn LS

Failure Date: 04/15/2001

The contact owns a 2000 Saturn Ls1. He stated the vehicle was consuming large quantities of engine oil. The dealer stated the rack and pinion assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken for a second opinion to a local mechanic where the power steering reservoir was replaced and the failure ceased. On a separate occasion, while driving at speeds of over 10 mph or attempting a left or right turn, the vehicle would lose power. Also, while in the reverse mode, the vehicle would stall. The dealer could not duplicate the problem. The failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer over 4 additional times and the failure could not be duplicated. There were no recalls on the vehicle and no further repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were under 103,000.
