While driving the vehicle on public road the transmission failed in 3rd gear without warning while in motion and I was unable to get vehicle to safe place off of the public road without assistance. If this had happened on a freeway the result could have resulted in injury or death. Vehicle towed to repair center as it would not move under its own power. Repair center confirmed that partial forward gears were not operable as well as reverse gear. Issue was identified to be consistent with a known issue for this vehicle platform with 6 speed transmissions of a fractured wave plate. Repair center replaced the transmission and vehicle currently working fine for last 6000 miles. At the time of the transmission failure the vehicle had just over 122,000 miles on it and had been in service for about 10 years and 2 months.

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Saturn Outlook. The contact stated that the transmission intermittently would not shift out of gear and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. In addition, the air bag warning indicator illuminated and there was an abnormal noise coming from the dashboard. The vehicle was taken to kool Chevrolet Buick GMC (810 w chicago rd, sturgis, mi) where it was determined that the sensor in the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken back to the same dealer regarding the air bag warning indicator and it was diagnosed that the passenger seat was defective and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was approximately 154,000.
I was driving home doing 35mph, when my car would not shift into gear and the engine light came on. I was able to get it home doing 5mph. My husband came out to take it for a drive and will not go into reverse. We had it put on the computer and a couple of different codes showed one of them being p0776. I have been looking on line and found many other complaints with this same problem. I also came across this: Saturn Outlook transmission fault and/or check engine light with code p0716, p0776, p0717, p0777, p2714, p2715, and/or p02723 Saturn Outlook problem model years affected: 2007, 2008, 2009 drive trains affected: 2wd, 4wd average mileage: 71,429 mi (39,000 mi - 118,879 mi) verified vehicles with a 6 speed automatic transmission may develop one or more of the following faults related to a broken 35r clutch wave plate inside the transmission: illumination of the check engine light with code p0716, p0776, p0717, p0777, p2714, p2715, and/or p02723, loss of reverse gear, slipping or harsh 3rd or 5th gear shift. Removal and dis-assembly of the transmission will be required to replace the broken 35r wave plate. It is also extremely important that all debris from the failed part be cleaned from the transmission while it is disassembled in order to try and prevent future problems.
Traveling at 70mph on I 75 and rpms increased and speed decreased almost causing the truck behind me to rear end the vehicle. Got off on first exit and parked to look things over and no obvious problems. Tried to put car in reverse and nothing only 1st gear of the automatic transmission operating. After hours of research this appears to be a common problem with this transmission. If this has not caused a fatal accident yet I am positive it will soon.
Very scary. We went on a short vacation in PA and while we were going up a hill, my vehicle suddenly would not shift into gear. We were traveling about 27 mph and the engine rpm went to 7000. I have to quickly pull off the road and call for roadside assistance. Soon after this incident, the check engine light came on. We were towed to the local gas station and the mechanic said it's a transmission problem and would cost over a $1000. I went on the web did some research and found out that this gm module been having transmission problem and gm did absolute noting to resolve this. This is the first time I bough gm and it will be the last.
Vehicle would not shift gears properly. Drove it directly (less than 5 miles) to a local auto shop. Diagnostics identified transmission problems. Vehicle is 5 months out of warranty. Transmission had to be replaced.
I had just pulled out on a interstate highway, and the vehicle acted like it did not want to shift gears. The check engine light came on and I could not accelerate any faster than 40 mph. I pulled off the side of the road and waited on a tow vehicle. The steering has been very stiff also in the last few months.
While in a stopped position, I tried to accelerate and my transmission would not go into gear. I was stuck not being able to pull over to get out of traffic, because my car wouldn't go into gear. I put it into park, then back into drive several times, and I finally got it to creep enough in low gear to get it to the side of the road. This could have been a disaster if I were trying to pull out into traffic. The car was in the shop prior due to the transmission slipping. This was not covered and cost me $3000. I am still not sure this corrected the problem and I don't feel safe in this car. This car has been in the shop several times for a front leak at the driver's door from the sunroof, which still leaks with heavy rain. Also, the constant squealing when turning the wheel which no mechanic will acknowledge. Nothing has ever been done to correct this. I assume it is the power steering pump. The car doesn't have good acceleration power compared to any other SUV model. It drags with no pick up.
Transmission failed to keep in gear while traveling on freeway at freeway speeds. Would not re-engage. Limped to side of road. Towed to dealership and mechanic noted internal transmission failure due to faulty wave plate. Vehicle has less than 100k miles, howver 6 years old.
I have an issue with my 2008 Saturn Outlook. All of the sudden one day I went to leave my driveway, put the car in reverse and it would not go into gear. It also barley goes forward. I had previously had problems with slower than normal acceleration and rough gear change. After doing extensive research on what the problem could be I have found numerous complaints of the similar kind all over the internet. It seems there is a $25 part called a wave plate that is defective in these cars which causes the transmission to cease resulting in thousands of dollars of repairs. After finding this out I called gm customer service and was bounced around quite a bit. They are aware of the problem and discussed helping financially to fix the issue. They asked us to have it towed to a gm dealership so we did just that. After doing that they renigged their offer to help us so the car just sat there for quite a while. I bought this car used in 2011 with 98,000 and owned it 2 years then had this problem, now at 126,000. After I bought it and had this happen I have found out there have already been transmission issues with this car. I love the car but it is a complete headache. I am a single mother of three kids and do not have $3500 to shell out to get this problem fixed and believe that it is such a huge issue that something should be done and these cars need to be recalled. Meanwhile I make a car payment every month for a broken down car in my driveway. My car has been sitting for almost a year because I can't and also feel like I should shell out that kind of $ when gm is clearly at fault. I also am afraid if I do fix it the same problem will happen again. This is very unsafe. They are a terrible company who does not stand behind their products and leaves so many americans out in the cold. What horrible customer service.
My husband was driving on the highway. All of a sudden the vehicle downshifted. So when I decided to drive it. The vehicle will not shift in to gear past 20 miles and hour. I took it to the local dealer. I told him I have research this online and it better not be this thing called a waveplate. Well to my surprise it was. They are charging me for the parts and labor $2200. 00. I stated to him, I have had several cars there is no way the transmission should have started slipping so soon. This vehicle had so many issues and it is too soon for me to trade it in. But if I could I would. There needs to be a recall on this entire transmission.
While driving , suddenly the Saturn Outlook xr 2008 wouldn't go above 30 miles per hour. When it was switched from the automatic transmission to manual transmission, it would not change above gear #3. In addition, when trying to park, it was found that reverse gear wouldn't work.
Could not shift to next gear and the car jumps/shakes when shifting. Going on 3rd repair, its just costing me to much money to fix and still need to drive the car. . .
The contact owns a 2007 Saturn Outlook. When the contact purchased the vehicle, there was a recall on the transmission that was never repaired. While driving 65 mph, she noticed transmission failure when the gears became difficult to shift. The vehicle would also remain stuck in high rpm's while attempting to slow down. The contact stated that the vehicle sounded as if it would explode. The dealer performed a computer update on the transmission, but it did not remedy the failure. Furthermore, a strut spontaneously became bent, which caused the steering wheel to jerk at a 90 degree angle. The dealer repaired the strut. The contact smelled gasoline multiple times coming from her vehicle. The dealer was unable to identify the origin of the smell and could not assist. The current mileage was approximately 26,500 and failure mileage was approximately 854.
