Saturn SL2 owners have reported 12 problems related to cruise control (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Cruise control will not disengage by depressing brake, using the off switch, or depressing the clutch. Also, when this occurs, the speed slowly but steadily increases. The only way to correct the problem is to turn off the ignition, or press the brake until the car stops and the engine dies.

My mother and I were driving south on I-95, mile marker 277 (north of daytona) with the cruise control set for 72 miles per hour. I was in the right lane, and as I approached a car going slower, I applied the brakes to release the cruise control. It would not turn off, so I moved to the left lane and tried repeatedly to release it. I was about the hit the rear of the car infront of me, and it seemed like I was accelerating rather than decelerating. I could not slow down so went into the median strip, and still was unable to slow down. It seemed I was unable to even depress the brake pedal. It seemed frozen. It was rough going, and I was afraid of going into the northbound lanes, so I steered the car to the right, and seemed to slide across the nearest lane into the side of a u-haul truck. The impact spun us around and we came to rest in the median strip.
While driving at 60-65 mph steering wheel will start to shake. Contacted dealer, and the dealer could not find problem after nine attempts. Consumer states rough idle when warm. Dealer replaced pcm/ecm, but problem still exist. Power steering fluid low. Experiencing shimmy when braking. Noise from gas tank when coming to a stop.

When turning on cruise control, the throttle stuck, causing vehicle to increase speed, and would not decrease speed when applying brakes. Consumer tried to engage / disengage cruise control, but engine continue to run at high rpms. Consumer resulted to using heavy braking to control vehicle speed. Vehicle was brought to dealer, where mechanic was able to force throttle and replaced cruise control.
Idle control valve failed causing stalling.
Engine idles extremely high, with use of automatic transmission, vehicle resulted in crash. Please describe.
This is a design issue. We are prior year (1993, 1997 (2), and 1998) Saturn owners. For the prior years, the cruise control was located on the inside of the steering column. The horn buttons were located on the lower portion of the steering wheel. This resulted in complaints from many owners because this was not the standard location for horns on gm or other models. In 1999 or 2000, Saturn moved the horn to the typical location (center of steering wheel over the airbag). They replaced the horn buttons with the curise controls. 4-6 weeks after we purchased, the 2001 Saturn, I was involved in an incident with a young lady having a 'road rage day'. During one frantic moment, I tried to locate the horn. Of course it wasn't in the 'customary location'. I found it but not until after I had activated the cruise control. Concentrating on the other driver's actions, I was unaware that 'cruise was engaged'. In the next moment, this driver slammed on her brakes (for which she was ticketed and fined). I tried to stop. However, when I took my foot off of the gas the car sped up. I hit her car when I should have been able to stop. I am extremely concerened that another driver (particularily owners of older model Saturns who purchase new Saturns) will experience the same situation but with more deadly consequences. I have spoken with Saturn customer services and written them a note (without response). The customer service person said they would do eactly what I did. She owns and drive the prior year Saturn. She said the location of the horn is automatic. I have spoken to two others who have done exactly the same thing. It took me 3-6 months to never engage the cruise in my search for the horn. That is probably because I have logged well over 200,000 miles in the older models. Thanks.

The vehicle experiences rough idle, unable to be remedied by the dealership.
Driver was driving and set cruise control at freeway speed, began to exit, touched the break to shut cruise off, cruise control did not shut off. Stood on brake pedal to slow vehicle, removed pressure momentarily and vehicle attempted to accelerate to set cruise speed, turned off cruise at main switch, lost control of vehicle, hit guardrail, and vehicle spun around and had approximately 55mph impact to rear from the guardrail.
Consumer states cruise control failed.
When driving with the cruise control on the car accelerates . Please describe.
