Saturn SL2 owners have reported 14 problems related to front air bag (under the air bag category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact stated while pulling into a parking area the vehicle lightly hit a curb. The front air bags deployed. Vehicle was traveling under 5 mph. The manufacturer said the air bags would deploy under any circumstances. However, the service manual said the air bags would deploy from an impact while traveling 10-15 mph. The vehicle has not been inspected to determine the reason for the air bag deployment under 5 mph.

Sidewall exploded while entering a driveway. Bought the same tire as a replacement and it developed a giant sidewall bubble in a few thousand miles that just ruptured. . . The two tires both went bad in only 11333 miles. . . About 5666 miles each!!.

After a crash in a Saturn and the air bags exploded. The passenger side of the dashboard area started smoldering. The fire department arrived and put the fire out before it did a lot of damage.

The frontal air bags deployed without impact. Turned into parking space and bumped under car on curb. Bending the sway bar bracket but did not touch car body or bumper.
While driving at 50 mph, consumer ran into side of a bridge and hit both sides. Upon impact, none of the air bags deployed. Front end was damaged. Contacted dealer. Vehicle was totalled and there was one injury.

Vehicle hit an embankment at 40 mph, and neither airbag deployed. No injuries, vehicle was totalled.
Seam where air bag deployed from steering column has developed a 3/4" tear. Consumer has contacted dealership with concern for this problem, and was informed that tear was due to "a puncture. " dealer was unwilling to assist consumer in any repair. Please provide any additional information/attachments.
Consumer was traveling 35-40mph on highway and another vehicle hit it in front. Upon impact, airbags didn't deploy.
Head-on crash at 40 mph, vehicle hit telephone pole, neither airbag deployed.
While driving about 20 mph on a road air bag detonated, but did not deploy.

Consumer's wife was driving at approx 25 mph hit pothole , no damage to vehicle or wheels. Both driver's and passenger's air bags deployed, causing passenger to break his thumb. Seat belts were worn at the time.
Vehicle was involved in an accident on 27-Jul-97. Was hit from behind. As a result, air bags didn't deploy, and driver's and passenger's seatback collapsed, causing the seats to fully recline.
Vehicle was involved in a head-on collision at 35 mph, and neither air bag deployed. Dealer was contacted.
