Subaru Crosstrek owners have reported 12 problems related to adaptive cruise control (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Crosstrek based on all problems reported for the Crosstrek.
I was driving on a texas highway on may 2 at the speed limit of 75 mph with the car on cruise control. It was a sunny day and traffic was light. Suddenly, without warning, or apparent cause the car went into a hard brake and the collision avoidance signals were beeping and flashing. The car behind me had to hard brake to avoid collision. I pulled over to the shoulder but as soon as I put my foot on the brake the flashing and beeping stopped. I eased back onto the highway but as soon as I got up some speed, the same thing happened again. I thought it might be related to the cruise control so I turned off the cruise control and it stopped. I drove the rest of the way without cruise control and there were no further incidents. I took the car to dealer. The service department ran diagnostics and test drove it but said they could not duplicate the problem. They said the car was operating "normally. " I called customer advocacy at Subaru and spoke to woman on a recorded line. She clearly stated that sometimes the eyesight feature can cause the car to "think there's something in front of you" and activate the collision avoidance hard braking. She claimed this was "normal. " still Subaru refused to do anything about it or buy back my car for more than trade-in value. I got the car from the dealer on may 18. On may 21, I discovered a class action lawsuit (hall et. Al. V. Subaru of America, inc. ) had been filed against Subaru on may 11, for the very same problem. The lawsuit covers most recent Subaru models including mine. I also discovered that "phantom braking" is a frequent complaint here and that Subaru settled a previous class action lawsuit for older models in Nov. 2025 . Nhtsa needs to force a recall and warn consumers of this very dangerous defect. I would be surprised if it hasn't resulted in serious injury or death.

I was driving with my wife when we were making a left turn. The adaptive cruse control came on. It took control of my acceleration, and steering. I got the car under control, but it was too late. I went across the empty parking lot, and almost crashed into the abandoned building.

Check engine light came on while idling. "eyesight" tech turned off along with certain associated safety features. Next day, vehicle struggled to ignite. Came to a complete stop at an intersection, released brake, stepped on gas, and the car rolled forward as if in neutral and bucked up and down like a rodeo bull.

My 2024 Subaru Crosstrek was stopped at a red light behind a car. My cruise was disengaged after the car stopped and my foot was on the brake. Suddenly, the car lurched forward on its own and only stopped when I pressed hard on the brake and moved transmission from drive to park.
All the advanced driver assistance system items listed on the website list all shutdown. The emergency brake lamp also was lighted. Subaru service has not found a solution as of yet. This issue clears then coms back within a single day. I find the system that I purchased not working is most alarming.

Check engine light came on while driving. All advanced driver assistance systems were disabled. Code is p26a3: thermo control valve is faulty. This is a known problem and Subaru has addressed it by redesigning the thermo control valve in 2021. Unfortunately there is no recall on the models fitted with the prior design that have a high rate of failure.
My brand new Subaru ignited in the engine compartment, burst into flames and exploded while I was driving it.
The vehicle has experience numerous times now, and has been to the dealer for repairs regarding an unanticipated loss of all ability to accelerate or maintain speed until the vehicle is shutdown and restarted. This has caused significant stress when traveling on a fast moving freeway in the fast lane and then having to quickly get to the shoulder to "power-cycle" the vehicle. The dealer has seen the vehicle 5 times for this issue in the 10 months we have owned it, starting at 6k miles and we just got it back from 2 weeks with the dealer; today it has 9k miles. The dealer has told is that the vehicle losing all power and ability to accelerate or maintain speed is a safety feature. I feel having my wife and three children in a vehicle the significantly increases the chances for collision as very much the opposite of a safety feature. We have tried working with the dealer over the past 6 months and 3k miles, but need the help of an advocate who can influence the dealer to correct the issue before someone gets hurt or worse. The date shown below is only the first instance of many instances of power loss.

The eyesight turned off and would not turn back on. Then the airbag symbol lit up on the dashboard. My cruise control and lane assistance were not working as well. If I had been involved in an accident, the airbags would not have deployed. The warning messages appeared about 3 weeks ago.

My vehicle is equipped with eyesight, which is a Subaru technology that includes adaptive cruise control, forward collison warning/breaking, lane departure warning, rear automatic braking, etc. Subaru claims that windshield replacements must use Subaru glass due the optical clarity of the windshield and that the eyesight system must be recalibrated. This is a $1339 cost (via safelight) to replace the windsheild. I have 8400 miles on my vehicle, and I am getting ready to have the second windshield put on the car. The glass simply breaks to easily. First incident, a rock hit the windshield and it cracked about inches while traveling through albuquerque, nm on I-25. Second incident happened today on I-25 with a barely perceptible sound, and the windshield has a crack about 6. 6 inches long. I am not sure what the issue is with Subaru windshields, but looking in owner forums, it's a pretty common occurrence. The fact that I am averaging a new windshield every 4200 miles is ridiculous. I have been driving for 35+ years and have had to replace a windshield less than three times. With the Subaru, I am doing it almost every 4-5 months (so far).
The lane keeping feature will randomly cause the vehicle to veer towards the center line at a variety of speeds and under a variety of conditions, requiring immediate driver correction to avoid crossing the center line. No accident has occurred but the system is now deactivated. In addition, the collision avoidance system does not reliably acquire a vehicle ahead if that vehicle is stopped and the speed differential is >30-40 mph. Without driver manual braking, a crash would occur. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.
Windshield is very easily cracked or chipped from the smallest pebbles hitting it while going even 35 mph. With the adaptive cruise control, getting the windshield fixed and the sensors recalibrated could cost a fortune.
