Subaru Crosstrek owners have reported 14 problems related to car stall (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Crosstrek based on all problems reported for the Crosstrek.
The engin malfunctioned. My safety and the safety of others was at risk because when an engin fails while driving it can cause a serious crash. The valve spring which is located inside the engin of the vehicle did fracture which resulted in the engin stalling while driving and was not able to be restarted. An engin stall while driving will increase the risk of a crash and serious injury. There were no warnings, the problem has been confirmed by a Subaru dealer service manager.

When crossing across traffic to get in the lane from right or left turns. There is slow and sluggish as it wants to stall or stay out in cross traffic to cause a collision!! it has happened since I purchased it from a non Subaru dealer beginning of 2021. There should be a recall as this sluggish acceleration problem can cause an accident.

Vehicle turned off/stalled at highway speeds on 2 occasions, 2 months apart. Needed to be towed. Significant safety issue. Both times, dealer stated no issues were found. First time they said it may be the brake light switch which was repaired under recall. Second time they said it might be the fuel pump overheating but said pump looked fine. I do not trust the car and will not drive it.

I was driving in traffic to complete stop, as I was accelerating the vehicle stalled. This has happened only once. I have had another incident when I was backing up to park my car in my garage, my back up camera froze while im still in motion then the infotainment reboots.
Car stalls randomly upon acceleration from a stoplight or stop sign. Takes 3 to 4 seconds til the car accelerates. During all this time the engine is still running. Has happened 4 times within the past year. Afraid this may cause an accident, as yesterday I thought I was going to get t-boned. Will not drive my grandsons in this car.

I I purchased my 2019 Subaru Crosstrek hybrid on 5/31/19. I had the first incidence of the all the warning lights come on in October 9, 2019. As I was between towns in rural northern NY, and 75 miles from home this was scary. I pulled over, checked the oil and fluids (all were ok), and called the dealer. They said I could continue to drive the car and to bring it in the next day when I got home. So I continued to my next destination and shut off the car for about 2 hours during our haircuts. Then when I restarted the car the problem recurred. I drove part way home that way and we stopped at a restaurant for supper. When we resumed our trip after supper the warning lights were gone. I took the car to the dealer the next day, October 10. They could find no reason for the problem and it was not then occurring. Subsequently the problem recurred on 12/20, 12/21, and 12/22/19. And on 1/16/20 the headlights wouldn't work! on February 12, 2020 the problem recurred on a trip out of town. I have visited the dealer four more times for this problem on 11/19/19, 12 /12/19, 12/20/19, and 1/2/20. During that time the service manager stated that there were multiple reports of similar problems on 2019 Crosstrek hybrids. He asked me, and I agreed, to be one of a dozen Crosstrek owners in the us to have monitoring hardware installed to read the electronic codes which resulted when the problem occurred. On February 12, 2020 the problem recurred. I contacted the dealer to let them know. On may 7th 2020, the problem recurred yet again. Barstow's service department contacted me to arrange for another appointment scheduled for 6/8/20. The purpose was to update the electronic system with a fix derived from the study in which I participated in Dec 2019-January 2020. The next day, June 9, I started the car and the problem recurred!.
The vehicle was losing power and getting close to the point of stalling but never stalled. It would periodically not switch gears as well. Seems like it could have been a faulty brake light switch. Apparently I was told that my vehicle was not covered under the recall put out earlier for this issue. So I had to pay out of pocket.
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek. While driving 80-85 mph, the vehicle stalled on several occasions without warning. In addition, the tachometer increased to high and the speedometer decreased. When the vehicle was restarted, it performed as designed. The vehicle was taken to Subaru of kennesaw (905 ernest w barrett pkwy NW, kennesaw, GA 30144, (770) 419-9800) where it was diagnosed that the transmission valve body needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and provided case number: sr1-46572013025 and extended the warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 65,300. The VIN was invalid.

The contact owned a 2016 Subaru Crosstrek. The contact stated that vehicle would not start. Colonial Subaru (761 e chester st, kingston, NY 12401, (845) 339-3330) advised the contact to go to an independent mechanic to have oil added to the vehicle. The contact called the manufacturer who sent a letter to schedule a service appointment with the dealer. The dealer changed the oil and a 1,000 mile test was to be performed to check the status. After the vehicle had been parked for an extended period of time, it failed to start while it was raining. The vehicle was towed to another unknown dealer for a second opinion and the batter was replaced. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle stalled and smoke and flames appeared. A police report was filed. The vehicle was deemed destroyed by the insurance company. The vehicle was towed. There were no injuries. The failure mileage was 5,700.
Car stalled and died while driving on freeway traveling 75mph. Felt like the transmission shifted into a low gear and the rpm's revved. Car immediately lost power and fortunately I was able to safely move to freeway shoulder. Car would not start and had to be towed but all electrical still functioned. I was low on gas but not out. I was on freeway at 11:30pm just outside detroit when this occurred. Ridiculously unsafe. Vehicle is currently at dealer and will be looked at 8/14/2018. Incident 8/9/2018. Exact same symptoms happened to the same vehicle 6 months ago. Car died on freeway traveling 75mph, rpm's revved, got safely to shoulder. Vehicle towed. Car started next morning and no error codes found. Even more compelling, the engine died 3 other times while driving at least 45mph, same sensation of engine going into lower gear, rpm's increased to 5000+, car dies, electrical works. Car was able to restart after 10-15 minutes of rest. These 3 incidents are not documented because I was not towed and did not take the vehicle in for service. I wish I had. I am reporting for the most recent incident of 8/9/2018. (I feel like I'm shouting with all caps. I am shouting because this needs to be fixed!).

June 2, 2018. Purchased a new 2018 Subaru Crosstrek from my local Subaru dealership and drove the car home. The next day (June 3, 2018), on my first trip out to run errands the car stalled after going from reverse to drive at slow speed in a parking lot. The next day (June 4, 2018), the car stalled again twice in rapid succession under similar conditions in another parking lot. The same day (June 4, 2018), I drove the car to my local Subaru dealership for service. Subaru engineers evaluated a similar problem on other Crosstreks and determined that the issue was a software problem. 21 days later I am still waiting for a remedy.
