36 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2005 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/27/2017

September 6, 2011, Subaru recall 11v464000 or wyx-34, fron lower control arms may break due rust and corrosion from road salt. Corrective action was to punch test, and rustproof if ok; replace at no cost if test failed. My dealer on Dec 19, 2011 performed punch test, and reported to Subaru it passed and was rustproofed, according to Subaru records. Mileage was97,158. On March 27, 2017, my Forester failed safety inspection because of rusted through front control arms. Mileage was 128,056. Subaru refused any support, saying they did what was necessary in recall by rustproofing. Rustproofing obviously did not work. The Forester failed on the lift inspection, fortunately, not by killing the driver, passengers, or other innocents on the road.

44 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2003 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

Today I was at my mechanics to replace a muffler. After raising the car up on the rack he noticed destructive rust that was covering and inundating the k frame and front lower control arms (transverse links). In September of 2012 I was at gary lang Subaru (illinois) for an unrelated issue. The safety recall for my vehicle , wvx-34, required an inspection and repairs, and if necessary, replacement or corrosion treatment of the lower control arms (transverse link). According to Subaru of America, that recall was "completed". The Subaru operator (kayla) could not elaborate on the term "complete". No mention of any specific action was reported. Today, during the inspection of said area, my mechanic indicated that no proof existed of either corrective action, either undercoating or mechanical repair or replacement. This is a safety concern, and at some point it is possible that loss of control will follow if the lower control arm breaks. I will pursue the Subaru dealer for repairs but have no idea if they will assume responsibility.

45 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2004 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/04/2015

Having recently bought my 2004 Subaru Forester xt, it ran great for the first few months. Then, while on the highway, it would shake uncontrollably, almost like an earthquake. Having taken it to Subaru a month before, I mentioned that it was doing this a little, but not to the extent that it did on the highway. He said it would be $150 to look at it. Taking it in to a different mechanic, they had to replace the lower control arm. Looking today online for recalls on another issue I'm experiencing, I see that there was a recall on this exact issue, but only for cars sold in certain states. This is the exact issue that was wrong with my Subaru, and I believe that owners in other states are experiencing this issue as well. Hopefully you will look at this before this happens to someone on the interstate and they lose control of their vehicle.

My car was at my mechanics getting looked at. He noticed the lower front control arm brackets were corroded (the passenger side is severely corroded), told me about it and stressed that I needed to take it to a dealership ASAP to have it replaced. When I contacted the dealership, they confirmed the recall for my car, mentioned the service had already been performed (by the previous owner) and scheduled an appointment. The dealer ended up taking pictures of the lower front control arms and sending them to Subaru of America for approval to repair/replace the affected parts. The recall service was performed, however, the problem came back.

50 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2002 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/20/2014

After purchasing a 2002 Subaru Forester, the vehicle was driven for a very short period of time prior to noticing that the front end of the vehicle began to feel loose and unstable while steering, and the vehicle began to pull to one side while accelerating and braking. After noticing the instability and swaying action, I conducted cursory inspections of the front end and suspension areas of the vehicle. As a result of inspections, I didn't notice anything wrong with the undercarriage. While driving the vehicle on 20 September 2014, without warning, the right front lower control arm broke. It could be observed that there was a failure in the weld between the hanger bracket and the main portion of the control arm. After the control arm broke, it caused the control arm to move towards the rear of the vehicle; it caused the right front tire to slam abruptly into the rear portion of the tire well; it then caused the right front tire to lock up, which subsequently caused the tire to immediately begin to skid. Contributing factors which minimized results: vehicle was only traveling at about 45 mph; it occurred on secondary road; road was straight and level; there was no oncoming traffic; and road surface was dry. There was additional vehicle damage. Upon checking the recalls for the 2002 Subaru Forester, I discovered that the 2003-2008 Foresters were recalled for this exact reason (recall id # 70673. ) there were other additional recalls as well for similar issue. After contacting Subaru customer service, I was advised that they would not cover the front lower control arm under the recall even though the characteristics of the recall were the same. I believe that the failure of the control arm is very obvious and it should be covered similar to the other recalled years. I would be happy to provide pictures of the front lower control arm failure. Thank you.

51 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2009 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 09/08/2014

Car was being driven north on I 83 when the car (Subaru Forester 2009) started swaying between two lanes. I couldn't control the steering wheel to stop the swaying until the car speed lowered considerably. Other cars along side and behind my car took evasive action to avoid hitting my car. I drove the car home safely after I was able to gain control of the steering. I am concerned about the safety of the car even after the car was examined by a collision center and the dealer could not find the direct cause of the incidence. The collision center suggested realignment and rotation of the wheels. They also recommended replacement of a bushing at the front lower control arm. The dealer who inspected the car didn't agree that the bushing replacement was necessary. I am afraid to drive the auto.

53 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2003 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/11/2014

I was driving at 55 mph when my right front control arm snapped. I looked to ensure no vehicles were coming, and made the decision to turn left to get back on the road with all 4 tires as I could only turn left. I could not control the vehicle, and the vehicle turned side ways and then rolled 3 consecutive times landing on its wheels facing south. I was transported to the hospital . On the way to the hospital in the ambulance the driver had to stop, because I was throwing up convulsively while being strapped to a backboard and I thought I was going to die of not being able to breath due to my airway being filled with vomit. I sustained the following injuries: 2 forms of vertigo which I still have, a shoulder injury which I was in a sling for 6 weeks, severe muscle injuries in my back and neck, I now have severe muscle spasms and cramps throughout my whole body, loss of memory, and severe contusions throughout my whole body, and also a right leg injury which affects my walking capability, ptsd and severe flashbacks of my accident with me rolling over and over again, because I was conscious through the whole accident. There was an open recall on the lower control arms on my vehicle which was never repaired. The suburu recall campaign # is wvx-34, and the NHTSA campaign number is 11v-464. The necessary repairs were never performed. The airbag NHTSA complaint number I filed for the airbags not deploying is 10598597. There were 22 other reports to the NHTSA regarding the airbags not deploying dut to the wiring harness attached to the drivers seat being not long enough, there are several complaints to the NHTSA. The federal trade commission is in the process of investigating my accident also. The federal trade commission reference number is 54237615.

I will like to know if when my car was recall and fix the front lower control arm in 2013 has anything to do with my wheel alignment, since it seems that the dealer and town fair tire can not get it right because every time I complaint and get it fix and go home after a few miles the steering wheel goes off center and start making noise at the front end about 55-65 mph and this began after fixing the recall and I can not drive in peace and I wonder if am not taking a chance driving a car that was straight as an arrow before the part replacement, please help, thank you.

57 Front Suspension Control Arm problem of the 2005 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 01/10/2013

Lower control arm separated at weld due to rust through and caused car to loose control and crash. Both front airbags deployed. Minor injuries were sustained. The control arms were inspected by dealer approximately six months before the accident due to the recall for this component. They were deemed to be safe after a "punch test" and rustproofing applied. The recall also provided for replacement, however my car was not determined to need replacement as a result of the punch test. It appears that the testing procedure for this recall may be too subjective and/or ineffective and that continued failures will be forthcoming.
