1 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 11/18/2011

Check engine light went on. Took car to dealer. Fuel cut valves (made of plastic), on top of the fuel tank, were both cracked and leaking fuel. Had both valves replaced. Cost over $900 because rear end must be removed in order to drop fuel tank. Subaru has not issued a recall.

2 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 08/20/2011

Subaru Forester 2007 fuel cut valves (made of plastic), on top of the fuel tank, were both cracked and leaking fuel. Had both valves replaced. Cost over $700 because rear end must be removed in order to drop fuel tank. Subaru has not issued a recall and does not have record of this happening to anyone else. We purchased this vehicle new from the dealer. This is a fire hazard and I believe it may become more common as these models age further. 3 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

We're the owners of a 2003 Subaru Forester (about 90 000 miles). For at least 6 months after we fill the gas tank, we detect gas fumes near the rear wheels - exterior only. As the tank's level goes down, the smell will go away. We are not over-filling; in fact we will fill before the pump "clicks off". There is no dripping of gas and our mechanic has checked for leaks/overflows etc and has found nothing. Obviously something is wrong and we are not the only owners who have complained about this exterior smell (it seems to have been very prevalent in the 2002 model). The dealer has been no help. We hope NHTSA can help us. Thanks.

4 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Subaru Forester. He stated that he received a recall notice for a generic check valve in the fuel tank. After the dealer removed the check valve, the contact was concerned that there could be a possible explosion in the fuel tank. He called the manufacturer and advised them of his concerns but was told that if he wanted the check valve to be re-installed, it would have to be done at his expense. The current and failure mileage was 49,485. Updated 05/24/10 updated 06/04/10.

5 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Subaru Forester

Failure Date: 05/09/2008

This incident first occurred shortly after my last oil change at about 38,000 miles. During four of the last eight times I have refueled my 2006 Subaru Forester, which now has about 40,000 miles, the filling pump has not automatically shut off when my gas tank was full. As a result, gasoline overflowed from my fuel tank and spilled out. Fortunately, no fire has resulted, and I have managed to Dodge the spray. However, I am concerned about spilling gasoline, and I fear that I will one day spill gasoline on myself. This has happened at four different gas stations over the past month, which leads me to believe that the problem could be with my car. The gas stations were taylor #80 in amarillo, TX; exxon in childress, TX; love's in encinal, TX; and shell at the corner of calton and san dario in laredo, TX, and the incidents occurred on may 9, may 19, June 3, and June 5, respectively. Again, I am concerned about the possibility of fire, chemical injury, and waste of money. I have not contacted Subaru as of yet because I was uncertain whether the problem was with my vehicle or the gas stations. I will soon contact a Subaru dealership about this matter. Thank you for considering my report.
