2011 Subaru Forester. Consumer states fuel filler neck is rusted and there is no flapper on top of the neck
the consumer returned the vehicle to the dealer to have the fuel filler neck replaced. It was soon discovered, the replacement neck had the same defect as the old one. The consumer reported the defect to Subaru and the representatives informed the consumer the discloration on the neck was not rust and they had no idea why it was designed that way. Subaru refused to offer any kind of full extended warranty because that was the design for the 2011 models.

After a period of cold weather (below freezing), I drove my car for about 20 minutes. After exiting the car, I smelled a strong odor of gasoline at the front of the car. During the trip when using the heat inside the vehicle, I also smelled a strong odor of gasoline and exhaust and shut off the heat. (I thought it was coming from the cars in front of me in traffic. ) after leaving the car in the garage all day, I drove it to my regular mechanic to see if there might be a fuel line leak. The next day, he advised me that there had been a technical service bulletin issued by suburu about cold weather and fuel smell. He said that indeed the fuel lines in the engine compartment exhibited signs of gas leakage. When the fuel leaked, it leaked onto the engine and manifold (which I think is normally gets hot). Given the potential for fire, he replaced all of the fuel hoses in the car with new hoses and the fuel filter. On the same day, another suburu customer had the identical problem with smelling gasoline in the engine compartment, and he had to have the same repairs done. I should add that on the day I first smelled gasoline near the front of the car and when I had turned the heat on in the cab, it was about 22 degrees fahrenheit, with a wind chill in the single digits. This is unusually cold for our area. I had just filled up my gas tank the evening before. My mileage is a little more than 70,000 miles, and the car has been very well maintained.

: the contact stated fuel leaked onto the ground while filling the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected by the contact who determined the fuel filler pipe was rusted. The plastic covering around the filler pipe became clogged with road debris and appeared to have caused the rust. Additionally, the pipe appeared to have rusted more quickly because it was made of mild steel. The replacement part was ordered through the local dealer, who informed the contact this was a commonly ordered part.

Engine check light keeps coming on once started and would stay on until vehicle is shut down. Taking vehicle to dealership. Light is coming on due to gas cap not being tight enough, consumer states the cap will not click when turned.
Gas nozzle thrown from tank afraid of explosion due to spark.
The fuel filler design is such that it is to complicated for gas station attendants to correctly put on. It will crossthread easier than it will go on correctly. With out proper pressure in the fuel system, like many cars it will stall abruptly without warning. In new jersey it is illegal to pump your own gas, or even get out of your car to check that the cap is properly installed. Subaru refuses to acknowledge dealer warranty claims for improperly installed fuel fill caps, or that there is a design problem. The dealer will just reset the engine warning light and consider it a loss.
2000 Subaru Forester with fuel problems. Customer states that the dealer said the rust was not covered under warranty. Dealer also told him that rust is a common problem. He would like to be reimbursed and believes Subaru needs to put out a recall. The consumer stated the engine light first activated due to a vacuum/pressure problem within the fuel system. The gas cap was replaced; however the problem continued. A further inspection revealed that the gas filler pipe had completely rusted through. In addition, the fuel lines had also been subjected to severe corrosion causing the rubber tubing to pull away from the gas filler pipe. It was discovered that the upper portion of the pipe assembly had a large deposit of sand and salt covering the rust. The area was covered by a plastic shroud. The consumer believed a more corrosion resistant material should have been used, possibly made of stainless steel.
