37 Other Fuel System problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 02/01/2016

The contact owns a 2002 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that while driving at 15 mph, the front passenger side lower control arm suddenly failed causing the passenger side of the vehicle to lower. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the lower control arm had fractured. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 11v464000 (suspension) but the failure persisted. The contact also indicated that there was a fuel odor present while operating the vehicle. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed of repaired. The failure mileage was 135,000.

38 Other Fuel System problem of the 2001 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/05/2016

The car has a gas odor in cabin when started in cold temperatures. The smell will go away after a little while. Judging upon how many articles I have read , this is a problem. Why have they not expanded their recall?.

39 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/24/2015

In cold weather <30 degrees f, gasoline leaks from the fuel lines under the intake manifold. The leak appears to be coming from where the rubber fuel line is connected to the metal fuel line on under the passenger side of the intake manifold. Looks to be a loose hose clamp. There is no access to this line to facilitate tightening.

40 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

Please note that recalls have been done for the exact same problem on the 2002 & 2003 Subaru Impreza models, but not the 2004. When the vehicle is parked or being driven in colder temperatures (below 45 degrees), the fuel hose constricts causing fuel to spill out onto the intake manifold & the engine to heavily smoke. During warmer temperatures, the vehicle does not smoke but there is still a strong smell of gasoline in the passenger compartment. The fuel hoses are intact with no cracks or breaks of any kind. I have found hundreds of other 2004 model consumer's with the same issue. I have attached a copy of one of the forum's for your reference. I have called Subaru of America regarding this, but have been told my claim is not valid because the vehicle hasn't had this problem before. I explained that the vehicle hadn't lived in colder temperatures until we bought it. Still no help. This has the potential to cause an engine fire and poses a huge safety risk. Please help!.

41 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/01/2015

In cold temperatures when starting the car there is a smell of raw fuel that fills the cabin to the point where I have to get out of the vehicle and air it out before it would be safe to drive. Subaru has TSB's on this issue for many vehicle models and years but does not seem to think it is worthy of a recall. This issue first started for me about 3 years ago and has been a constant problem since.

42 Other Fuel System problem of the 2014 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 11/05/2015

About 6-8 months ago as I was making a turn I pressed the brake pedal and instead of slowing down the engine throttled up. And after a few moments went back to normal. Two weeks ago as I pressed the brake pedal while coming to a stop sign the engine throttled up and I had difficulty coming to a stop. I put the car in park and turned it off. When I started it again the engine immediately went to high throttle to the point that the front of the car started vibrating. I turned it off again and restarted it and this time it was ok. I took the car into the Subaru dealership. Their mechanic ran the diagnostics and was unable to pin point the problem. They decided to call the Subaru technical department and were told to not let me drive the car until their engineer took a look at the problem. This was a week ago and I have not been able to find out what they have found.

43 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 05/13/2015

Upon start in any weather after sitting or multple start and stop trips with engine at operating tempeture a very strong raw fuel smell over takes cabin so badly windows have to be rolled down to avoid sickness. Smell continues after several minutes of driving with windows down.

44 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 02/17/2015

My 2004 Impreza wrx sti leaks gasoline out of a fuel line under the intake manifold every time the temperature drops below about 30° f. The rubber hose connecting the metal fuel lines isn't long enough and at that temperature the shrinkage is enough to make it visibly drip gasoline while the car is running. The hose location requires removing the intake manifold to gain access to fix the problem. I've researched this issue and there are many, many Subaru owners with the same problem. Subaru did a recall for 2000-2002 vehicles, but this problem affects many other years of Impreza with the exact same fuel rail setup.

45 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/12/2015

Extremely strong smell of gasoline in cabin in cold weather (below 32 degrees f. ).

46 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/09/2015

I own a 2005 Subaru Impreza wrx sti, upon starting vehicle, idle, and driving there's strong fuel smell under the hood and inside the cabin. I have popped the hood and confirmed is coming from back passenger side of intake manifold where the fuel lines, rails, and injectors are. I have confirmed this to be relating to soa's recall for the 02-03 Impreza wrx's hard fuel line / rubber hose leaking issues. I live in southern California so appears extreme cold weather not the cause. Leaking fuel is a huge safety issue!.

47 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/08/2015

Strong fuel smell in cabin, dealer confirmed leaking fuel hoses.

48 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/05/2015

While under freezing temperatures outside car smells strongly of fuel while running. Sometimes it takes half an hour or more to just what I consider breathable air in the cabin. It was -20 degrees outside so opening windows is not an option and driving in gas fumes is not safe.

49 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/01/2015

Under cold conditions (40f or less) the rubber fuel rails will contract under the intake manifold and will slowly leak gasoline causing an overwhelming smell and possibility for a fire. This happens when the car is both stationary and under motion. This problem was acknowledged in the year 2009 for the 2002-2003 year models for the Subaru Impreza wrx and a recall was enacted. However, this recall did not include the 2004-2005 models even though the same engine with the same fuel rails were used. This problem has been consistent and predictable for the 3 winters that I have owned the car. I have also heard from others with the same year car that they are having similar problems. The pictures I included show the screw that clamps the rubber hoses. The gas leaks at this connecting point but it was hard to get a picture of the actual hoses. I have contacted Subaru of America and they directed me to bring this up with NHTSA. Thank you!.

50 Other Fuel System problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/23/2014

During cold temperatures there is a gas leak. Car is an Impreza outback sport. There is a recall for wrx for the same problem but not my car.

51 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/03/2014

Strong fuel smell when temperatures are below freezing that does not disipate. 2002-2003 models have been recalled for same design flaw in fuel line. Since I own a 2004, repair may cost upwards of $400 due to extensive labor involved. Found many others with same issue when researching situation online. I am concerned about potential fire hazard.

52 Other Fuel System problem of the 2000 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 11/18/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2000 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, he would smell a strong fuel odor. The contact discovered the there was fuel was leaking on the engine. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000. Ne.

53 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 11/03/2014

Everytime I start the car in even the mildest to coldest temperatures, the car has an extreme gas smell in the cabin of the car. I have taken it to the shop and they claim they don't even smell it and cannot service it. There is a recall for model 02 and 03 of this car but does not cover my year. It's gotten to the point where the car is not drive-able during cold weather. The recalls also do not cover the state of maryland, which is ridiculous because we've been getting cold snaps putting us below 0. Considering the problem is detectable even in 40 degree weather, this does not seem reasonable.

54 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

Noticeable gas fumes around rear of car after returning from a drive.

55 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 09/15/2014

Tl- the contact owns a 2012 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that while trying to fuel gasoline, the fuel vent was fractured causing the gasoline to leaked out instead of accepting the fuel. The power steering warning light illuminated. The failure occurred continuously for months. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 21,500. Pp.

56 Other Fuel System problem of the 2008 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

According to the dealership the catalytic converter in my 2008 Subaru Impreza has prematurly failed. The vehicles check engine light came on and the car went into "limp" mode while driving, in conjunction with the check engine light my vehicle has been experiencing very poor gas milage for the last month. The dealership has quoted me over $2000 for the repair of my car. It was brought to my attention that several other same model year Subaru's have recalls due to the catalytic converter not performing to emission standards. Some of these cars have the exact catalytic converter part number as my car, I do not understand why car would not be recalled also.

57 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/31/2014

It has recently been extremely cold in chicago and upon initial startup of the vehicle there is a strong smell of gasoline inside the cabin. The smell does not go away until the car is completely warmed up. I noticed that there has been a recall for this type of problem. It was Subaru recall no. Wvk-21. I believe my car should fall under this recall. I called Subaru customer service and they told me that my car did not fall under this recall campaign. But the problems I've been having fit the description of the recall campaign.

58 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/24/2014

During cold weather, a strong fuel odor permeates the cabin of my 2005 Subaru Impreza wagon. Upon engine warm up the fuel smell goes away.

59 Other Fuel System problem of the 2000 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/23/2014

Very strong fuel smell coming from the vehicle. Found serious fuel leaking from the fuel lines and intake manifold. Dealer/other owners reported same problems for this model.

60 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/14/2014

During cold start there was a fuel smell coming from the car. The car was taken in to have the fuel lines tightened at a cost of $50. 72. The problem was not properly corrected and the fuel smell returned a couple more times before the weather warmed up. I recently found a recall (program wvk-21) for the 02-03 model years but nothing for 05 even though the problem exists on my 05. The program consists of replacing the hoses which was not done on my car. I am concerned that without a recall of all the affected vehicles that when the cold weather returns there will be a serious safety issue.

61 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

The contact owns a 2005 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted inside the vehicle. The dealer stated that the fuel lines and the intake manifold gaskets needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 139,476.

62 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/31/2013

Experienced strong fuel smell in cabin after cold start on a couple of cold days (~10f?) experienced during trip north for holidays. Odor went away after engine warmed up. No problem evident in warmer weather. Seems likely that this is same problem that led to recall of earlier my Imprezas.

63 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

Tl - the contact owns a 2003 Subaru Impreza. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted in and around the vehicle. The contact mentioned that after inspecting the vehicle he noticed that there was a fuel leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician confirmed the failure. As a result, some of the fuel lines needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 160,000. Rk.

64 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

There is a very strong smell of unburnt fuel in the cabin on cold days (below 10f). The fuel smell dissipates when the car warms-up. The smell has caused passengers in the car to become sick and is a serious distraction to driving. When I contacted two different Subaru dealers, they acted like it was the first time they had heard of this issue and both wanted to take the engine apart. However, a quick search on the internet reveals this is a prevalent issue for the Subaru Impreza in cold weather.

65 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 11/27/2013

Only on cold days I smell fuel while driving, upon investagation I found that the little rubber lines under the intake were leaking fuel on to the top of the engine. I called Subaru and they said the they know about the problem but my car is not in the recall becauase I don;t live in the affected states so if I move to newyork or michigan I would be covered well I like ohio so if this could get expanded that would be great.

66 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 11/07/2013

There is a strong gasoline odor when starting the car up in cold weather. The odor of gasoline fills the passenger compartment. It only happens when it's cold outside. We just purchased the car used in July.

67 Other Fuel System problem of the 2002 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 10/30/2013

Very strong smell of raw gasoline in the engine compartment and cabin that would be consistent with spilled fuel but there wasn't any spilled in either location. The smell is strongest while driving with heat or a/c on to the point that windows had to be opened because the fumes were irritating the eyes. After speaking with a mechanic, was told that a common problem is the rubber fuel lines that run along the top of the engine dry rot and break causing raw gasoline to spill onto the hot engine and turbocharger potentially causing a fire. This has been an issue the entire time I have owned the vehicle.

68 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 08/08/2013

Outside air temperature was moderate(75f), but engine was cold. Upon engine start strong smell of gasoline in cabin and in engine bay around the passenger side intake manifold.

69 Other Fuel System problem of the 2012 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 08/02/2013

Driving about 30 - 35mph when all of a sudden the car lost power. The car did not stall, but engine went down to idle speed and my accelerator pedal had no throttle control. The "check engine " light came on as well as the "traction control" light. I drifted to the right shoulder of the road and turned engine off. After opening the hood to check engine - observed nothing unusual - I re-started the car. The car seemed back to normal, but the engine code lights stayed on. The warning lights eventually turned themselves off - 3 or 4 re-starts later. Subaru dealer reported a p2138 obd code, but he did not replace/repair anything. The same exact thing happened 9 months later (July 2, 2014), and Subaru dealer reported a p2138 code once again. No repairs or replacements done!.

70 Other Fuel System problem of the 2013 Subaru Impreza

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

Vehicle will not start after an extended period of attempts. Appears to happen most often when vehicle is parked (either indoors or outside) for more than several hours. Car will crank over for 10+ seconds and will not start. After multiple attempts, car has started eventually. Have communicated with dealer and sia offices that I have noticed the car will make whirring noises that come from the back rh side of vehicle - and also a clicking noise near center of dash when turned off and sitting. This will go on for over 5 minutes at a time, which must drain battery since car is not turned on or engine running. Was told by dealer that this is the emission system "purging" itself - and is considered normal for this vehicle. Sia offices confirmed this and also stated that nothing is noted in the current owners manual which explains this feature. My concern is that the car is unable to start when required to - and am guessing that it might be related to this unusual feature. . . . Regardless of origin, safety issue with car not starting and being ready to operate when normal starting procedures are followed.
