I purchased a 2016 Subaru wrx (premium) used from a Subaru dealer in albany, NY with under 26k miles for approximately $25k in 2018. On a drive in December 2022 I experienced hesitation and/or stuttering under load or when attempting to accelerate, and car began getting very hot, and close to overheating, and the engine was knocking loudly. After turning engine off and then restarting, the knocking (intensity) was not as noticeable as the initial incident. Initially I replaced all coil over plugs, as cylinder #4 initially was reporting a misfire code after the check engine light came on. This appeared to relieve the misfire briefly, but the issue immediately returned, this time with piston #3 reporting misfires and also exhibiting signs of a possible failed ringland, with oil seeping past rings (on to / in spark plug) causing the engine to run very poorly. Presently upon startup white smoke comes from exhaust out the tailpipe and the engine is hesitating and/or missing, running poorly and I feel it cannot be driven safely with the diminished permormance or complete lack of ability to accelerate normally like a motor vehicle should. I have engaged a mechanic to inspect the engine, but have not yet proceeded with inspection/repairs due to the class action litigation. Current mileage 73563. This car has an fa20 engine.

Vehicle mileage was 7387 miles. While driving several check engine lights illuminated including traction control, check engine light, abs, hill decent assist, cruise control icon flashing. Vehicle power was dramatically reduced. Made appointment next day with Subaru dealership. I was informed code p0016 showed up on the diagnosis. It indicated crankshaft position camshaft position correlation bank 1 sensor a. Vehicle was at dealership for close to two weeks. Numerous parts were replaced including oil valve assembly, camshaft sprocket assembly, ecu control unit, guide chains, chain lever, etc. I have invoice from dealership detailing all parts replaced. Although covered under warranty, a brand new vehicle with under 8000 shouldn't encounter these issues.
In a 2015 Subaru wrx with a 6-speed manual transmission purchased 03/2015 and delivered to purchase dealer 04/2015. Reported to Subaru dealer 02/19/2016 a rough idle with engine rpms recorded between 400 and 1k. Rough idle tripped a check engine light after fueling and cruise control light began flashing. Diagnostic code p0420 reported a fault in catalytic converter. Software update to computer performed resolved issue temporarily. 04/10/2016 at 9. 7k miles rough idle issue returned rpms of 400 to 1k again after fueling. In neutral 30-60 seconds after starting vehicle stalled at fuel station. Upon re-starting vehicle check engine, flashing cruise control, abs, hill-start assist, and traction control faults tripped. Vehicle behavior similar to NHTSA recall 16v-162 where NHTSA noted 'due to the use of incorrect material for a portion of the engine turbocharger air intact duct crack, the engine may develop a rough idle, reduced power, and possibly stall'. Complainant believes recall may need to be expanded to include a wider range of vins before listed production dates in recall order.
