1 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2017 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/11/2025

I drove into the parking lot of walgreens, then drove around and pulled into a parking spot facing the south side of the building and put my foot on the brake to stop and park. Instead of stopping, the car suddenly lurched forward violently and slammed into the brick wall of the building. My wife called 911 since I told her my chest really hurt. When the police came, I told them my foot must have slipped off the brake and hit the accelerator, since I had no idea what else might have caused the car to accelerate like that. My wife drove the car home and then drove to the er where the emts had taken me. A CT scan showed that I had a fractured sternum, since my chest hit the steering wheel full force after the air bags failed to deploy. I was in excruciating pain for a few weeks, and after I felt better, we submitted a claim to our insurance company. We then took our 2017 Subaru Legacy to a certified Subaru collision repair center. We were shocked to find that the car was totaled, since it was still drivable. Something kept bothering us about the crash, since eyesight should have applied the brakes if I had accidentally accelerated and it detected a brick wall in front of our car. After some research, we stumbled on the information about the class-action lawsuit that was just settled by Subaru for reports of sudden unintended acceleration (sua). The description of what happens with sua was exactly what I experienced, but this was the first we had heard of it. We were never notified about the lawsuit, even though our VIN number shows our car was involved. Our Subaru dealership had all our contact information since we bought our Legacy from them and they have done all the maintenance work on it. Unfortunately, we released our car to copart as part of our insurance settlement, so there’s no way to check the edr data. Please let others know about this major safety issue before anyone else is seriously injured!.

2 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2024 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 07/01/2025

Multiple instances of the vehicle emergency collision avoidance system responding to a parked car or a car stopped in a left turn lane (I. E. Waiting at a light). 5x+ the car audio alarm goes off, and the vehicle abruptly brakes while moving in traffic. Essentially the avoidance collision system detects parked vehicles (always in other lanes) as troublesome instances. This has occurred on winding residential streets, and slightly curved highway intersection 1x.

3 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2024 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 10/04/2024

Warning light on infotainment screen for eyesight and transmission oil issues. Warning from mysubaru system via website. Warning on infotainment screen while using carplay "there was a problem loading this content. " contacted Subaru of America britt senior customer service advocate telling them dealer is not making appointment to fix car and no response. Car is clearly having electrical issues. On previous trip to dealerships service was told some cars seem to have issue near train lines and have sporadic electronic issues. Car has had hazard lights flash upon start up on several times. Subaru of America is not taking this seriously. In my honest opinion someone is going to be seriously hurt or killed because of soa refusal to fix this issue with 2024 Legacy.

4 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2009 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/01/2024

Under Subaru campaign wqk47, which supersedes an earlier campaign, 05-09 Legacy/outback and other models are known to undergo accelerated brake line corrosion due to sub-par materials and design. Subaru of America's "fix" for this issue is to inspect the lines: if the lines are compromised, they replace them. If the lines are corroded but not yet compromised, the lines are coated with an anti-corrosion wax. This wax washes off the car and is ineffective. Subaru performed this recall work insufficiently on my vehicle, failing to identify the severity of the corrosion. They coated the lines, called it "fixed", and the brake lines later ruptured under normal driving conditions. This caused a highway near-miss at speed that could have impacted everyone on the road. Multiple Subaru dealerships in connecticut have refused to re-inspect and repair the vehicle under the recall campaign, despite it being a known critical safety concern, and despite knowledge that the original parts and anti-corrosion application are sub-par. They insist that because the ineffective recall campaign was already "completed", they bear no further responsibility for the design compromises and sub-par materials that are the root cause of this issue. Additionally: under Subaru bulletin 12-197-16r the dashboard of 05-09 Subaru Legacy/outback models is known to become sticky and melt. While this might initially be considered a cosmetic issue, the melted surface is dramatically reflective. The hump over the gauge cluster melts first, causing a huge, intense sun glare reflection in the windscreen directly ahead of the driver. I own two 05-09 Subaru legacies; this issue is present in both. Subaru of America has rejected my replacement claims on both cars because the cutoff date for their open recall has expired. This is a major and constantly worsening safety issue that severely limits driver visibility. Because it developed slowly, it was not a safety concern until after closure of the recall.

5 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 04/24/2024

Vehicle is equipped with Subaru eyesight driver assist which includes reverse automatic braking. Vehicle was reversing towards a parked vehicle on the street and the rab feature failed to apply the brakes and the vehicle collided with the parked vehicle. I am extremely disappointed that the safety system in this car failed to work as advertised/expected resulting in damages to both cars.

6 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 11/29/2023

Vehicle was using the self driving feature of the Subaru eyesight system. With the system engaged, the vehicle is supposed to accelerate and apply brakes accordingly as to keep a distance from the vehicle in front. Today, that system failed. The vehicle, with the eyesight system engaged, accelerated right into the vehicle in front. There was no warning. The vehicle will be go for repair on 12/5/23. I have used the eyesight system since purchasing the vehicle in 2019 with no issues, except for today. Luckily, I was driving at a very low speed but this safety concern can cause catastrophic injuries if it is not fixed.

7 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 09/20/2023

Touch screen driver information system has random display and audible warnings. Audio and navigation display cannot be controlled and does random radio channels and map displays. The screen developed bubbles under the front panel that appears to activate the touch sensor for the display. This condition is very distracting to the driver and might cause unsafe vehicle operation. The display changing and beeping during driving causes an unsafe situation. It also impacts the ability to use and see the rear view camera as the display is distorted due to the delamination/bubbles. This problem was identified by many Subaru Legacy and outback owners in 2018 which led to a recall and warranty extension for repairs. The radio/nav display is manufactured by harmon. It was widely reported in 2019 and the problem persists. Subaru contends that the display bubbles are caused by liquid contamination of the display, but this has not occurred in our vehicle, and dealers will not accept responsibility for the defective displays.

8 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2018 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 08/13/2023

The driver’s side airbag of 2018 Subaru Legacy deployed as I was reversing out of a parking lot going approximately 5mph. It has not been fixed due to the company’s negligence. One of Subaru’s accident advocate specialist claimed the engineer found a mysterious brown liquid that caused the airbag to deploy although I had not been in the car for two hours nor was I drinking any substances; especially “brown”. My and other’s safety was put at risk to a degree that is fatal, I was a short distance from the highway to head home. Had I been driving at the normal highway speed in my city (55mph) with the airbag deploying in my face, with others on the road, and inhaling blinding fumes, I can assure you it would’ve been detrimental to my and other’s being. The car was inspected for a few months by multiple Subaru engineers, one of the accident advocate specialist refused to give me any documentation or pictures proving this was the cause. There was absolutely no warning lights or other malfunctions occurring. The car is in great condition, and in a previous accident did not deploy its airbags.

10 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 05/31/2022

The car's aeb system keeps mistaking steam from the street (such as sewer covers or construction sites) for a physical object and will activate. It has stopped my car in the middle of the street two days ago (5/31/22) and I was almost rear-ended by the car behind me. The warning system will also engage for no reason in most city driving conditions when there is no danger. It mistakes merging with cars with an imminent crash. I do not trust the system and now disable it whenever I drive as it is more likely to cause an accident than to prevent one. This has been a problem since I purchased the car. I contacted the dealer on 5/31/22 but have not heard back.

11 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2020 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 04/16/2022

Since last October when a software update was performed on the vehicle I have had multiple(8-10) instances where the eyesight system caused the emergency braking to activate when no other vehicles were nearby and a crash was not imminent. Usually it has been when entering a left hand gentle curve with a guardrail nearby, but it has also happened going straight ahead. The audible and visual alerts appear and hard braking occurs. The braking is severe enough that on rain or snow covered roads a crash might occur. The dealer inspected the vehicle and claims they found the calibration was off but the problem has occurred 3 more times since the calibration. I have contacted the dealer again but they have refused to acknowledge the problem further.

13 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2021 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 09/09/2021

There seems to be an issue with the infotainment system. The system will randomly turn off which also turns off the safety features. I would like to associate this while carplay is in use, but I have witnessed it happen without carplay. Subaru has already replaced the head unit under warranty, but the problem continues. For the cost of the car, this should not be an issue.

14 Automatic Emergency Braking problem of the 2019 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 07/01/2021

I've had this occur two times. Other vehicles pulled out in front of me, and the eyesight technology applied the brakes very, very hard. There was sufficient room between me and the vehicles that pulled out in front of me, so the very, very hard braking wasn't necessary. I would have just taken my foot of the gas peddle, and would have been fine. The problem is when the vehicle itself applies the brakes very, very hard the car behind you almost runs you over because visually there's no reason to be applying the brakes so hard.
