2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 1999 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 12/27/2014

Started noticing a problem when coming down a long, steep hill with extensive shuddering when braking. When I got into town, there was a even more shuddering when coming to a stop at a red light. I had to pull on the parking brake to stop the car. When we started up again, it pulled very hard so we pulled over and when I put the car into neutral, the engine raced up above 4,000 rpm. I shut the engine off, but when it was started again, it raced again. I eased it safely home a short distance away with the uncontrolled acceleration problem continuing.

Immediately, the engine roared at full throttle, and the vehicle took off down the street, where it jumped the curb and crashed into a tree at 45 mph. Emergency service personnel arrived within minutes, and he was taken to the major metro-area 833 bed hospital (level 1 trauma center) where he was admitted to critical care. He died peacefully and without pain on Wednesday afternoon, November 26, 2014, at age 37. Subaru of America was notified of this incident on Friday, November 21, 2014; a detailed description, police crash report, and 18 pictures were provided, with a request for them to inspect the totaled vehicle and download available information from the black box recorder/event data recorder. 5 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2008 Subaru Legacy

Failure Date: 10/11/2012

This has been happening for several weeks. When driving with my foot on the accelerator and when I take my foot off and start to brake, there is a slight acceleration just as I start applying the brake. It happens quite often and I had gotten used to it but one day when I was a passenger and my wife was driving and noticed it. The next time I drove it, I noticed it. It seems to be doing it most of the time. It may be a precursor to unintended acceleration.

I called dealership & was told that this happened because heater/ac was on dual m (feet & chest) & this was normal. I have had car checked & there is nothing wrong with it. So they say. Based on service mgrs response, others have complained about the acceleration. Given the events with Toyota --there should be further investigation.
