Subaru Legacy owners have reported 29 problems related to cruise control (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Subaru Legacy based on all problems reported for the Legacy.
Steering wheel adaptive cruise control for speed regulation does not function properly. When pressing the control to increase or decrease speed, there is no response or "follow distance" increases. Because Subaru's eyesight and adaptive cruise control represent significant safety, accident-prevention advances, a malfunctioning steering wheel control represents a real safety hazard when driving.

While turning into a parking lot, the check engine light, emergency brake light, the cruise control light and the stability control light all came on and started blinking. Parked the car and shut off the engine. Let set for an hour. Started again. Ran it home and all lights previously indicated stayed on doing the same thing. Car ran fine though in all instances.

About two weeks after purchasing a 2019 Subaru Legacy, I was driving on a highway in heavy traffic when suddenly, for no apparent reason, the speed of my vehicle was no longer under my control. I was in a panic for my safety and life! after a few seconds of this loss in speed control, I either applied my brake or accelerator (I am not sure which) and I regained control of my car's speed. A few minutes later, I noticed a number of icons on my screen that were strange to me at the time. Reading the owner's manual days later, I learned that the icons represented that the cruise control was in effect. There are many buttons close to the steering wheel. I must have inadvertently pressed the button to activate cruise control. This could happen again by accident because these controls are so close to the steering wheel. Even though I know what happened, I could still accidentally press the button again and potentially could cause great injury or even death! I want this fault corrected on my vehicle before I or someone else gets hurt!.

Our recent purchase of a 2018 Subaru Legacy has left us with a very unhappy realization. We have a Subaru outback and like the car but very unhappy with the cruise. We did not realize the cruise control advances 1 or 5 mph rather than the conventional cruise of 1 mph. We have found this feature to be not only on Subaru but many other makes of vehicles. From researching online and talking to others have found we are not the only ones that do not like it and feel it is unsafe. There does not seem to be a reason to advance 5 mph rather than 1 mph. When using this type of cruise it is necessary to watch the speedometer, rather than paying attention to the road, to get to the anticipated speed and then quickly set and hope you locked-in the desired speed. If the desired speed is not reached the first time then it is pushing the cruise and holding it, hoping that it only advanced 1 mph rather than 5 mph, otherwise it is canceling and trying again. We contacted Subaru about this and were told that if there are enough complaints they would consider a software update. It was also explained that we would not have purchased the vehicle if we were told this before the purchase of the car. We looked at the websites for the safest vehicles and Subaru is at the top of the list but this type of cruise control takes away the safety; everyone is preaching to reduce distractions when driving but taking away the conventional cruise control and implementing such a distraction defeats the purpose. We hope this complaint leads back to vehicles having conventional cruise control as the standard equipment.

Vehicle has an electrical failure that causes the dash check engine, brake, cruise and other lights to activate. While driving, the failure causes: one or both headlights to suddenly fail making the vehicle illegal and dangerous to drive at night, cruise control to suddenly fail, and stability control to become non-functional. The main failure being the headlights/daytime running lights could cause injury or death due to sudden lack of visibility at night. Subaru was unable to diagnose/fix the failure on 2 service occasions. This failure occurs without warning while the vehicle is in motion at both highway speeds and city street speeds. The component causing the failure is unknown.

The contact owns a 2006 Subaru Legacy. While driving various speeds, the vehicle lost acceleration and the check engine and cruise control warning indicators illuminated. The contact coasted to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but the technician could not find a code to identify the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.
While in motion at highway speeds and when attempting to utilize the coast function on the cruise control to temporarily disengage acceleration and/or speed control, the system fails to stop propulsion and continues to accelerate and/or maintain existing speed thereby causing a safety hazard.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that the vehicle would not accelerate when the gas pedal was depressed. In addition, the check engine light and the cruise control light remained illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 140,000. Ad.
My 2008 Subaru Legacy 2. 5 I, has a problem with the drive-by-wire. When I start the car after driving it just fine, the car gas pedal will no accelerate. This happens in motion or stationary. The car just revs up to 2200 rpm's. This can also happen when your driving. The car check engine light and cruise control light flashes. The car will not accelerate.

I was driving with my son (9) during the evening of 12/16/14 on side roads looking at christmas lights. I was going 15-20 mph. Night was dry and clear. Suddenly, the check engine light came on steady, cruise control light began flashing and I had absolutely no acceleration! I pulled over and put the car in "park". Engine revved between 2000-3000 even though I was not pressing anything, just idling in p. Turned car off for a min, back on, dash lights still on - ce & cc. Still had no control over the gas pedal but when taken out of p, car got itself up to 15 mph somehow. We were very close to home so coasted home and into the driveway. When shifted to p at home, engine revved again. Next morning I drove it to school, ce & cc light still on but car drove ok. When I drove it again, dash lights were off and it drove fine. Same exact issue happened again on 12/23/14, again at a low speed on a side road, thankfully. Error code on the car is p2138 - throttle position sensor. There is no warning before this happens, car is fine and then suddenly it is not. From what I see online, this has been a common occurance lately with this car. I am terrified that it will happen while I am in traffic or on the highway and cause a serious accident! please investigate this with Subaru, I see that a lot of people have trouble getting it resolved and I don't have the time or money to pay for something that appears to be a common Subaru defect. Thank you for your time and attention to this serious issue!.
Tapped brake pedal to disable cruise control. No throttle control when resuming manual speed control. Coasted to a stop through multiple lanes of freeway traffic. Engine kept running possibly at raise idle speed when stopped. No loss of power steering or brakes. Turned key off. Restarted after maybe less than a minute. Throttle control resumed. Check engine light was on. Drove to multiple locations to get codes read. After 2 or 3 restarts check engine light went out. Found a shop to read codes. Code p2138 in memory. Have removed throttle pedal assembly and tested position sensor resistance values. Some readings may appear to be slightly out of range indicated in service manual. Intend to recheck readings and possibly replace pedal assembly. May also check harness resistance and/or consult dealer. Mileage reported is approximate.
My 2006 Subaru outback ll bean has been cutting out on me while driving. One incident was on the highway at high speed. The gas pedal went limp and I had to navigate over 2 lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder. Gas pedal was completely unresponsive. Check engine light came on and the cruise control light began flashing. Every time this has happened it was either raining or snowing outside. Took the outback into the dealer and was told they weren't sure what the cause was because they have never seen it before. They suggested replacing the gas pedal assembly, but they were not certain. The same situation happened once when I turned on the cruise control.
Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the cruise control and check engine warning lights illuminated. The vehicle would not accelerate and engaged into limp mode. The contact shut the engine off and after restarting the vehicle, the contact was able to drive without failure however, the warning lights continued to illuminate. The failure recurred three times intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 72,300. Kmj.
Sudden deceleration. Occurred at complete standstill, 25mph and 65mph, speed appears not to be a factor. Check engine light comes on and cruise control quits and cruise light blinks and engine defaults to 1500rpm, all happens simultaneously, ergo no warning. Complete loss of gas pedal control. Intermittent problem. Can happen a few times a day or nothing for a week. Tends to happen more from a cold engine start and within 3 miles of thee start. Very dangerous if on freeway, especially in fast lane and pulling out onto street, etc.

The vehicle stopped responding to throttle pedal input, resulting in having to pull off the road, across lanes of traffic. Engine light comes on and cruise control light flashes. After restarting 3 times the lights go away. Dealer couldn't replicate so would not cover under warranty. This has happened on several occasions since, usually only in summer. Code is p2138 and appears to be a consistent problem with Subaru vehicles.
I have 2005 Subaru Legacy 2. 5i, base model. First the rattling noise by the driver side dash board and the cruise control failed, which it is already on recall status (cruise control only). Now, the clutch is failing by engine cutting off in the middle of driving when the clutch is engaged-- I mean while driving over 60 miles. I consider it is life threatening situation where the car manufacture should look into it.

Cruise control randomly disengages while driving under normal conditions, causing a sudden and unexpected loss of vehicle speed.
Cruise control on 2005 Subaru Legacy wagon is intermittent over a range of operating conditions (50-70 mph, straight/flat, slow/steady curve, uphill, hot weather, cold weather, etc. ). Cannot pinpoint to one particular combination of operating conditions. Perhaps intermittent electrical connection, bad sensor or computer control failure. When problem occurs, "cruise" light always stays on, but "set" light turns off and engine loses acceleration. Resuming/resetting the cruise control does not solve the problem. Notified milford Subaru (nh) during 22,500 mi service and they could not recreate problem. Notified milford Subaru (nh) again during 30,000 mi service (they have the car now, will be picking up tonite). Have not been able to find NHTSA recalls or service bulletins on this topic, but have seen internet message boards where other Subaru owners have experienced a similar problem with the 2005 Legacy.
: the contact stated while driving various speeds downhill with the cruise control activated, the vehicle accelerated without warning. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined that was the way the cruise control was designed to function. The dealer instructed the contact to disengage the cruise control while descending downhill. The manufacturer was alerted. Updated 9/13/2006 - the cruise control was set at 58 mph but while driving downhill the vehicle accelerated to 77 mph.
The contact owns a 2004 Subaru Legacy. The contact was driving approximately 30 mph when the vehicle decelerated independently. The check engine warning light was illuminated as the cruise control warning light began flashing. In addition, the vehicle would not accelerate over 10 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing where the technician advised that the throttle position sensor would have to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the failure recurred six times. The throttle was replaced twice. The electronic control module was replaced and the manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000. The consumer stated the throttle ceased to function normally and the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle, would then slow down immediately and would only move at a speed of approximately 10 mph. The consumer stated he learned if he came to a full stop and restarted the vehicle three or four times, the throttle would re-engage and he would be able to resume normal speed, sometimes for some distance , and other times for only a short distance before it failed again. When the vehicle's electronic control module was checked by a mechanic, it showed a code p2138. It appeared that the engine computer unit was involved because when it rest the throttle worked again, briefly. The mechanic reset and it ran normally for three days before failing. Updated 05/16/13.
Under normal driving conditions, cruise control disengages randomly causing unexpected vehicle deceleration.
2003 Subaru outback developed a problem where the vehicle would experience hesitation upon acceleration and the check engine light would illuminate. ** answer required*** the vehicle lunged while in motion without the gas pedal being applied, the consumer had difficulty with the automatic shifting, lack of power upon acceleration, and on occasion an extremely loud noise coming from the rear of the vehicle when shifting, braking, or disengaging the cruise control with the brake pedal. The rotors were resurfaced.

2005 Legacy 2. 5i wagon with manual transmission has always had throttle surge under very light load with cruse control on. Is most noticable on highway going down slight grade. With cruse control off, I also can't maintain desired speed in this situation; minimum amount of gas is too much, any less causes engine to go back to idle and the car slows too much. Dealer says this is normal. Note that the cruse control has suffered a separate problem (failed to work, always dropped out); this problem has been repaired and has had no effect of the suging problem.
When cruise control is set at 65 mph, going up an incline and making a turn vehicle suddenly accelerated, lost control of vehicle and hit a wall. Driver injured. Vehicle totaled.

First instance was in Dec 98, 2nd 6-21-99 cruise control stays on, cannot cancel or turn off, brakes go to the floor with no effect what so ever, have to turn the ignition key off and restart the engine in order to get out of cruise and get the brakes back (this is a little scarry when you have power steering). This was a life and death situation in traffic at highway speed on an approach to a severe turn on a exit ramp.

Cruise control was engaged as I was driving on the highway. When I applied the brakes approaching the exit ramp the cruise control did not seem to disengage. While my foot was on the brake pedal, I hit the cruise control switch on the dashboard--the cruise control light went off, however the car did not slow down although I was applying the brakes as hard as possible. I lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree head on at an estimated speed of 40-50mph. Neither driver nor passenger airbag deployed. The vehicle was a total loss. I contacted Subaru of America, inc. After the accident and sent them all information requested on 11/24/98; I have had no response from Subaru to date.

While driving with air conditioner on (around 45 mph), vehicle would gradually accelerate as if the cruise control was on. Would have to apply brake to control speed.
While stopping vehicle idled highly w/no warning. A few minutes later the husband drove because he thought his wife pushed accelerator. Again, vehicle accelerated, resulting in rear end collision w/no air bag deployment. Dealership unable to detect defect.
