Once the temperature has dipped below about 25 degrees, there is a strong smell of gas that comes from the engine area. The last several days have been especially cold, and though I am driving with the windows down out of necessity (it's -5 degrees today) the gasoline smell is overwhelming, and I have suffered from a headache the past 3 days in the morning due to this issue. It is obvious this issue exists beyond just me, as it takes a simple search to turn up dozens, if not hundreds, of similar issues. It is a serious health and safety concern and needs to be addressed.

Extremely strong raw fuel smell coming from vents with heater on. Weather has been below 30 degrees for over 2 weeks in ohio. The smell is not as bad while driving, but when stopped at a red light or stop sign the odor is causing severe headache and burning sensation in eyes. Also starts to gag you. Faint smell outside the car under the hood on the driver side. No leak visible. Inside cab smells like a gas station, but stronger.
2005 Legacy turbo. A strong smell of gas in cold weather. Seems to have been a problem with wrx models and SAAB 9-2x build by Subaru in 2005 and 2006. Should there be a recall for gas leak. There was a recall for Subaru models up to 2004. What was the fix for the problem. This appears to be a major safety issue.
I bought a used car this past summer. Now that it is cold whenever we get in the car when when it's really cold and there is a strong gas odor in the car. After doing some research I found that allot of people with this model various years have had the same issue. I would think this a serious safety and health issue.

My 2010 Subaru Legacy automatic. . . While accelerating on an incline lost all acceleration, car acted as if it was in neutral, no response from the throttle. Lights were still on, no warning light indicators. Pulled over, turned off the engine and restarted. Problem has not occurred since. Dealer says he can't recreate the problem and the diagnostics reveal no error codes. Afraid to drive my new Subaru.

In cold (<32f) weather vehicle emits very strong smell of gasoline from inside engine compartment. Once temp rises smell goes away.
Gasoline filler tube on Subaru Legacy models (1994 & 1997) rust out and cause very serious danger from possible fire/explosion due to leaking fuel. This appears to be a very common problem for Subaru owners and costly ($350+) to repair. This part was replaced on both a 1994 and a 1997 Subaru Legacy and the repair shop indicated that this is a common problem that they have dealt with quite often. I feel the problem is very dangerous and should be addressed by the manufacturer.

2001 Subaru Legacy wagon emits gas smell into cabin on start up in cold weather months. Although numerous owners complain with regard to this issue via internet, Subaru has yet to issue a TSB. This is a dangerous condition that Subaru should be required to fix free of charge.
After a gas fill-up, I noted a large wet spot under the rear passenger side of the vehicle. Because it smells like gas, I took it to my authorized Subaru mechanic and was advised that the filler neck was loose. In order to fix the manufacturer deflective, he would have to remove the rear axle. Since the car is 11 years old with over 83k miles, the car is of course out of warranty. However, in my option, my 1997 Subaru Legacy gt sedan is now considered unsafe to drive under any speed. I recommended that Subaru takes the initiate by issuing a recall before someone dies as result of this manufacturer deflective.
The contact owns a 1997 Subaru Legacy. The vehicle is leaking gasoline from the filler tube. The dealer stated that the repair would be the contact's responsibility because there was no safety recall. The VIN was unknown. The current mileage was 140,000 and failure mileage was 136,000.

Raw gas leak in cold weather has been a persistent problem, overwhelming odor in passenger compartment and after parking in basement garage. This was brought to dealers attention at first service when car was new and dealer could not identify any problem. I understand this is still a common problem with this year and model vehicle for which there has been no recall.
