Two occurrences so far on Wednesday March 23 and Tuesday April 5. Vehicle suddenly displays check engine light and the cruise control light flashes and vehicle drops into "limp mode. " problem is apparently due to wear on the potentiometers in the drive-by-wire system. This wear causes different readings which makes the motor think something is wrong with the pedal and cuts the vehicle speed to roughly 5 mph. First occurrence driving along at posted speed of 45 mph. Second instance trying to leave from a stoplight, got into the intersection and the vehicle speed dropped, was barely able to get vehicle out of intersection. (cel code p 2138 - throttle position sensor).

Slowly pulling into a parking spot, when the car accelerated (unintended acceleration) into a brick wall. My passenger suffered 3 broken ribs from the seat belt, and I suffered whiplash, bruising from seat belt, and bruised knees. The air bags did not deploy. Subaru corp decided to do nothing, and suggested that I trade in the car, which I have only owned for a few weeks. Do they then sell it to some unsuspecting person. Please help. Upon cold start, vehicle engine ran extremely rough, placed transmission in drive while applying brake, vehicle lunged forward while applying brake with both feet initially had little effect.

As we were driving down the highway, we heard what sounded like a airplane propeller whirling. The car then stopped. The mechanic at the Subaru dealership said we blew a cylinder. The car is now in need of a new engine or will be scrapped. We kept the car service religiously and was in great shape. How does this happen? I thought we had a reliable car.
Gas lid would not release after pulling the lever. This has happened mulitiple times prior without me realizing it was a problem because the second time I pulled the lever it would release - this last time it would not release even after multiple pulls - I had to push the gas door forward with the palm of my hand and then pry open.
I experienced two issues with the electronic throttle position sensor in my 2006 Subaru Legacy. The first time I was traveling at approx. 35 mph and the rpm's began increasing rapidly. I was in traffic and unable to pull off to the side safely when the engine completely stalled. I sat there thinking that the motor was going to blow up if I attempted to start it again. I called my mechanic and he thought that it could be the throttle position sensor, as he has replaced many of them on Subarus. I was able to start the car and move off to the side of the road to make sure that it was not going to do it again. The car was then taken to the mechanic where he cleaned the sensor and said if I have a problem again then I should replace it. Fast forward 4 months later and I experienced the same problem on a busy street where the car lost power and completely shut down after rpms skyrocketed and I was left with no control. Upon start up, the check engine light came on, obviously triggering a code that says the car is a death trap with a really poorly designed throttle. I plan to have the part replaced immediately, but this could be a serious safety issue for someone not in a position to move to the side of the road, as it just happens randomly with no warning signs.
At the first refueling of the car after purchase, the fuel door did not open when the lever was pulled. Eventually it did open after multiple attempts. At the second refueling of the car, approximately 450 miles after the first time, once again the door did not open. It opened finally after about 10 minutes with one person operating the lever and another forcing the door. The next day, the car was taken to the dealership where the fuel door pin was adjusted to rectify the problem.
While pressing the accelerator there was no response. The car continued at it's normal idle, but pressing on the gas gave no response. I was able to coast to a stop off the road and turn the car off and back on, which fixed the problem the first time. This has happened again two times as of today and it took several times turning the car off and back on to get use of the accelerator again. This seems like a safety issued, and of course a problem that could easily leave me and my kids stranded or injured in an accident if I were traveling at higher speeds when the problem occurs. I've read online that it seems to be a common problem with Subaru. The code that I received was p2138 (throttle position sensor).
At 300 miles, coming off highway, slowed down to 5 mph and went thru toll booth. I then stepped on gas, had hesitation, no response then acceleration. Happened again on 5/11/15 when I had 900 miles. Came off highway on to local streets. This time had 5-7 big hesitations over 10 minute period. Very dangerous because I was making a u-turn and car hesitated then accelerated as I was making u-turn !! returned car to dealer. Do not want to drive it until fixed.
The engine turning off unexpectedly when I am driving. Especially when I go to slow down. This has been an issue since I bought the vehicle. From day one.

For the past 2 months my Subaru Legacy has been stalling and losing power when I roll to a stop and/or when suddenly braking. Almost got rear ended by semi truck on the freeway and multiple times at stop lights in foggy situations. Subaru dealership said if it was an annoyance I should bring it in. Almost dying in a Subaru with my daughters is more than an annoyance. Dealership has known about it but performed a throttle body service, which was futile. Online forums suggest a faulty torque coverter and a service#16-90-30. Qutoes for replacing it are around $2000. Subaru knows it is due to faulty design of torque converter. . . This should be recalled. I used to luve Subarus and this car, I am now forced to take a loss financially and buy a safer car. Completely unsafe.
Tl the contact owns a 2012 Subaru Legacy. While driving various speeds, the check engine, cruise control, brake, and traction control warning indicators illuminated continuously. The vehicle was taken to Subaru of dayton (995 miamisburg centerville rd, washington township, OH 45459) multiple times. The dealer diagnosed that the oil fuel cap was loose and the oxygen and an unknown sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The VIN and failure mileage were unknown.

A strong fuel smell began entering the car through the heating vents on the car. This has only been noticeable since the temperature dropped below 25 degrees fahrenheit. There was a also a noticeable trail of gasoline in the snow following the car.

In cold weather, below approx 35f, fuel valves shrink, as confirmed via conversation with dean team Subaru service manager eric harrelson on a januar 2, 2017 phone call. As reported to Subaru, condition causes the following: 1. When parked, normally in garage: gas fumes will fill the space, permeate house to a point they overwhelm the inhabitant of nearest bedroom. 2. When idling at startup: car cabin fills with fumes to an intoxicatingl level. Normal remedy to open windows. 3. Driving: if outside temperature is warm enough, fuel valves may return to a normal size and halt the flow of fumes. Normally takes at least 40 minutes of operation to achieve this. Normal remedy to drive with windows open. The situation occurs regardless of fan operation. Attempts to remedy have included tightening clamps on fuel lines on own and via a mechanic. There is an existing recall on this model, wwo-98, which seems related to the issue at hand. Subaru has declined to include new VIN beyond original in this notice. The issue first presented in December 2014, repeated during cold spells each winter since.
I was driving with my son (9) during the evening of 12/16/14 on side roads looking at christmas lights. I was going 15-20 mph. Night was dry and clear. Suddenly, the check engine light came on steady, cruise control light began flashing and I had absolutely no acceleration! I pulled over and put the car in "park". Engine revved between 2000-3000 even though I was not pressing anything, just idling in p. Turned car off for a min, back on, dash lights still on - ce & cc. Still had no control over the gas pedal but when taken out of p, car got itself up to 15 mph somehow. We were very close to home so coasted home and into the driveway. When shifted to p at home, engine revved again. Next morning I drove it to school, ce & cc light still on but car drove ok. When I drove it again, dash lights were off and it drove fine. Same exact issue happened again on 12/23/14, again at a low speed on a side road, thankfully. Error code on the car is p2138 - throttle position sensor. There is no warning before this happens, car is fine and then suddenly it is not. From what I see online, this has been a common occurance lately with this car. I am terrified that it will happen while I am in traffic or on the highway and cause a serious accident! please investigate this with Subaru, I see that a lot of people have trouble getting it resolved and I don't have the time or money to pay for something that appears to be a common Subaru defect. Any time it is cold, around 32âºf or lower, whether the vehicle is running or not, there is a terrible fuel smell inside the cabin. I have actually witnessed fuel evaporating out my window. I can't imagine this is a safe condition and a short internet search revealed that this is a very common problem. I don't understand why Subaru doesn't have to pay to fix this glaring safety issue.
While crossing a four-lane road, the accelerator pedal went limp and caused the engine to become unresponsive. The car would not accelerate and barely made it across the lanes of traffic to the median safely. The check engine light illuminated and when placed into park, the engine revved to approximately 2500rpm without my foot being on the pedal. I turned the engine off, and restarted it only to have it rev again on its own to 2500rpm. It took 5-6 attempts to restart it before the engine idled appropriately and the accelerator became responsive again. The check engine light remained on and obd code p2318 was returned when I plugged in a scanner to the port. This is not the first time this event has occurred; it has been random and sporadic for about 8 months now, sometimes occurring as often as 3-4 times per week to going 2 months in between episodes. Speed does not seem to be a factor, it's happened at both freeway and parking lot speeds, in all kinds of weather and at various temperatures, with the cruise control on and with the cruise control off.
From a slow roll making a right hand turn. Put my foot on the gas peddle and got no reply for about 3-4 second then the card pulled out very fast this often. Most of the time from a stop at a stop sign. No movement for about 3-5 seconds. Also, then jumps out fast. Took back to dealer. They could not find the problem. June 18, 2015 called main office of Subaru. . They sent me to a local dealer. June 24, 2015. Car with them for 2 days. No response. Very scarey.
I was driving my well maintained vehicle in the left lane of the highway during rush hour at 65mph when the car suddenly decelerated. Nothing happened when I pressed the gas pedal. The engine continued to run. The check engine light came on. Traffic was very heavy and aggressive. Somehow I managed to get across the lanes and off the road. I turned the car off and waited at least 5 minutes. I turned it back on and the check engine light was still on. I drove it to the dealership (over 20 minutes) without incident. When the car was serviced the check engine light was out, but there was a record of p2138 which is a throttle position sensor error. The technicial couldn't find any failure or connection issues. No repairs or replacements were made. After reading numerous accounts of the same dangerous problem, I believe my car is unsafe.
The vehicles turbo failed and destroyed the engine. The turbo and engine were all factory original. I replaced the part that I thought was causing problems with the engine and turned the car on and black smoke came out off the exhaust. According to the mechanic shop I took it to the oil union bolts are the cause of the problem to starving oil to the turbo and then the turbo fails. I think it is unclear that these engines have a major flaw in them. Most people have these problems way before the 100,000 miles on the odometer mark. I would need a completely new engine for the vehicle. I did oil changes every 3000 miles and did the recommended services at each time or mileage intervals.
After cold start (~10f) experienced severe fuel vapor odors in cabin. Dealer tightened easily accessible fuel line clamps next day. Two days later same problem, severe fuel vapor incursion into cabin. Was forced to drive Sunday with windows open. Monday back to dealer. Was told fuel line problem may be deeper, caused by combo of cold weather and alcohol deteriorating lines. Also that relevant parts are on backorder due to this being an endemic problem. Its dangerous and inconvenient as we need our 4 wheel drive vehicle in these conditions.

When starting car in cold weather there is a very strong gas odor in cabin. Subsequent research has indicated that other 2001 Legacy wagons have been recalled due to exact same problem. My car was not recalled, which is confusing given that the exact same risks are associated.
