36 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Vehicle stalls when coming to a stop due to faulty torque converter.

37 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2018

Car stalls at low speeds, all lights are flashing, code reads transmission control system and torque converter failing , when coming to a stop it stalls out which is dangerous for my wife and kids.

38 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2017

When having to come to a hard stop the engine will die. It has happened 3 times now. Our shop ran a diagnostic and it showed a problem with the torque converter.

39 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2017

My vehicle has had transmission related issues since I purchased it. I have taken it to the dealer numerous times to have it addressed and was always told it was nothing. In Dec. 2017 my car broke down while on vacation in FL, it had 131,500 miles at the time. After having it towed it was diagnosed as a valve body failure. 10 months and 7k miles later it is now stalling and shutting down when I brake and I have been told that I need a new torque converter. I never received the letter about the cvt transmission issues and extended warranty, nor was this covered when I had the valve body replaced. The car stalling when braking is a huge safety issue and should be a recall. I luckily have not had to brake to the point of the car shutting down when driving on a road with higher speed limits, it has only happened in town when approaching stop lights or stop signs.

40 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2017

The car is having issues at idling and shuts off / stalls while at the traffic light or stop signals. Dealer replaced the torque converter but the issue still persists.

41 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2017

2011 Subaru Outback only driven by myself, 93000 miles mostly highway. Stalling regularly when coming to a sudden or fast stop. Slow stopping and pumping brakes would avoid the stall. Rpms would suddenly drop after going below 1200. Out of warranty. Valve body and torque converter replaced. This issue has been noted for many Subaru cvt between 2010 and 2012 and should have extended warranty to cover and repairs should be made at no cost to owner due to obvious fault in design.

42 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2017

I have been complaining about my car's symptoms to dealers and service mechanics since August 2014 (90,000+miles) with no diagnosis or repair. Symptoms could not be replicated or when low rpms were noted, it was just that - noted. My vehicle shudders, headlights dim, and dips to low rpms when approaching a stop or when in reverse at low speeds. It has stalled 4 times since I have brought it up. The first few were in a parking lot and at traffic lights. This morning was scary (143,000miles)- I was in heavy traffic and could not place the vehicle in park, remove my key or restart my car. I had to run out of my car and leave it there momentarily to get help. From what I understand, Subaru has an extended cvt warranty TSB 16-107-17. In it, TSB 16-90-13r - design change to lock-up type torque converter is referred to. I believe this is my problem. But I'm getting the runaround from different Subaru dealers and Subaru of americas hotline on how this is addressed since I have over 100k miles and whether or not the torque converter is covered in this warranty. Since it is "not a recall, as it does not impact the safety of your vehicle", I cannot get it looked at right away nor am I offered a rental while waiting to do so. Please - stalling in traffic randomly is a safety hazard! I have to wait a week before I can get an appointment to just check this and hope this time they discover the same things I have - meanwhile I'm not offered a rental and have to drive this one that may stall at any time. Please consider having the faulty torque converter assembly recalled. Those who have symptoms of randomly stalling in traffic - our lives are in danger and it's only a matter of time before tragedy occurs. Perhaps unrelated - my vehicle has also stalled on the freeway going 65mph. . . Lost acceleration and I had enough momentum to pull to the shoulder.

43 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 08/28/2017

Car abruptly shifts, loses power, and intermittently stalls in lower gears during operation. This may occur during braking, idling, or acceleration. Three times the engine shut off completely while driving at lower speeds. All check engine dash lights would illuminate and the car would have to be placed back into park and the ignition turned off and back on to restart. It sometimes took several tries. This creates a significant hazard for being struck in intersections, or from behind in moving traffic. Car was in the shop for 2 weeks. Subaru mechanics confirmed a defective torque converter and recommended replacement. My mileage was 114k at onset. Car is automatic transmission 2011 Subaru Outback 2. 5 I. I had car maintained properly at all recommended service intervals. These problems started after 100k and occurred without prior warning. Essentially, the automobile went from fully functional to this situation (sudden stalling during operation) within a week. This situation is a safety hazard and the transmissions should be recalled and replaced immediately. There is a safety bulletin related to this issue (TSB no. 16-101-16) and a warranty extension is not enough. Cars beyond 100k miles may not be eligible for coverage of the repairs, which may incur costs of several thousand dollars. Manufacturers must be held accountable for defective product.

44 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 06/25/2017

2011 Subaru Outback 2. 51 premium engine stutters and quits upon hard/quick braking. Hard/quick braking followed by vehicle engine quitting typically occurs in heavy traffic, resulting in near accidents. After research: cleaned the mass air intake sensor and throttle sensor. No improvement. Upon further research, appears to be a faulty torque converter.

45 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2017

The torque converter on the 2011 Subaru Outback is defective when it reaches higher mileage and causes the vehicle to stall out when stopping abruptly (hard braking). I was driving approximately 30-40mph in suburban traffic when I needed to abruptly brake. My vehicle stalled out twice in traffic after hard braking, both times while driving straight. This is dangerous in traffic as you must restart the vehicle from the stall out and could be hit by other vehicles while doing so. For safety, it is necessary to replace this defective part, which is ridiculously expensive for the owner. Owners are loosing out; Subaru should recall this part and replace free of charge.

46 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2017

My 2011 Subaru Outback is experiencing shuddering & stalls when coming to a stop resulting in the engine shutting off. It occurs randomly, and nearly got in accidents with drivers behind me having to react to the sudden full stops. The vehicle is at a Subaru dealership now for repairs to the torque converter as well as the valve box and value box wiring harness. There is a Subaru technical bulletin #16-90-13r regarding a known problem with the torque converter: "2010-12 my legacy and Outback models equipped with cvt transmission", subject "design change to lock-up type torque converter". Given the danger of random stalling events, the number of reported incidents, and the ~$4400 repair expense being put on me for a known design problem, I would think this should be strongly considered for a recall.

47 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2017

48 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2017

Torque converter is malfunctioning. This is a known Subaru defect, I believe. The car dies if I make a sudden stop- definitely a safety hazard. This happens on highways and surface streets.

49 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2017

Our 2011 Outback would stutter at a stop, Subaru said this was the way it was designed to conserve fuel. The vehicle now stalls, always starts back up but this is not comforting especially when my wife is driving by herself. This began sometime in January 2017 Subaru tech said need to replace the entire transmission at a cost of $11,000. That's crazy. Was referred by a friend to a transmission shop in baytown, says it is the torque converter and can either be rebuilt or replaced. I took it in yesterday and hopefully will pick it up Friday. I have made several trips to the Subaru dealer and called the headquarters. I am not pleased with my first Subaru. Should have stayed with a Toyota which I have had great success with. Our family of 4 had 4 camry's and got a combined total of over 1,200,000 miles on them.

50 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2017

The contact owns a 2011 Subaru Outback. While driving approximately 15 mph, the vehicle shuddered and stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but the technician could not identify the cause of the failure. The dealer diagnosed that the torque converter failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 97,500.

51 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2017

The torque converter locks up at low rpms and causes the car to stall. This is problematic at intersections and in traffic (which we experience a lot of in austin, texas). It is an ongoing problem that started recently.

52 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2017

2011 Subaru Outback worn torque converter thrust washer tech services bulletin #16-90-13r. Engine shudders and stalls on quick stops like at stop light or at stop at top of an incline like exiting a parking garage. Issue was diagnosed at my authorized Subaru services dept yesterday that it was torque converter and I'd be responsible for repair cost. Service tech and service dept manager confirmed that they did agree with my input when presenting the car. I was the one who diagnosed the problem -- which they confirmed. Bulletin states the availability of a countermeasure torque converter assembly thrust washer changed from solid brushing type to needle bearing type. I have read extensive complaints from other owners experiencing this problem. This is a very serious issue that if not resolved can result in injury or death. I was almost in an accident because of this defect last week. Subaru acknowledges the defect. . . But has done nothing about it. This needs to be a safety recall before someone gets killed!!! in some cases this defect has caused a fire in the engine. Consumers have documented this serious defect on NHTSA, car talk, cars. Com. Subaru needs to recall these vehicles!!!!.

53 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2017

I had notified you about my Subaru Outback and the stalling problem we were having whenever we would come to a quick stop. Subaru mechanic said that the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of $11,000. We had a local transmission shop look at it and they said it was the torque converter. They replaced the converter at a much cheaper cost and the vehicle so far has performed well. I have talked to other owners that are experiencing the stutter problem whenever they come to a stop but the vehicle has not stalled. I am confident that it will in time just as ours did. Should Subaru issue a recall on these converters?.

54 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/27/2017

When coming to a complete stop, vehicle will run rough and/or stall just before coming to a complete stop. This is well documented on Subaru web forums. Subaru needs to creat a recall. Per Subaru dealer diagnostic it is a bad torque converter, per bulletin # 16-90-13r.

55 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/24/2017

My complaint is that the car stalls when you stop quick. It acts like you are stoping and not stepping on the clutch. But the transmission is a cvt. It started in December 2016. 102k miles. Dealer is saying I need a new torque converter.

56 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2017

Torque converter judder. Recommended torque converter replacement after the back up duty solenoid malfunction. Car was towed to dealer after the at oil temp light as flashing while driving. Dealer said to not drive it and have it towed. Code p2764 was retrieved and solenoid was replaced. After test driving during the inspection, technician felt shuttering at 40mph and recommended replacing consistent with TSB 16-90-13r.

57 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2016

Car is stalling when in motion, and coming to a stop without steady brake pressure. It shutters then stalls. It has happened at least 6 times since fall 2016. "NHTSA id number: 10080367- availability of countermeasure torque converter assembly" -doesn't solve problem for consumers. Lack of recall/action on a 2011 model is alarming! does this malfunction need to harm/kill victims before action is taken?.

58 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2016

Vehicle stalled when approaching a stop. This happened twice. This is an automatic and should not be happening. I had to put the car in to neutral/park and restart it at an intersection where there's a firehouse. I've been told the torque converter needs to be replaced and there is already a TSB on the bad design of this part and that it needs to be replaced. At this point, I believe it should be recalled as it's happening more often than not to this particular transmission. This is very dangerous.

59 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2016

Engine randomly stalls when coming to a complete stop. We are always concerned about the safety of our children when this happens in high traffic areas/times. Our Subaru service advisor has acknowledged that it is due to a poor design issue "TSB 16-90-13r" which requires the replacement of the torque converter.

60 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2016

I own a 2011 Subaru Outback with 93,000 miles. The car stalled out at red lights in the city. Also, it stalled when I was on a hill and came to a stop. I was fortunate to restart engine and get out of the way of traffic. I took it to the dealer and they said I needed a torque converter costing $1,200. After reading the many complaints from other owners it is a dangerous situation. Why hasn't Subaru recalled the torque converters?.

61 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2016

Torque converter assembly. Car is stalling when coming to a stop at a stop sign, or at stop light or even when going to a stop through a work zone. It shutters then stalls. Feels like a manual transmission when a clutch is not fully pressed. It has happened 5 times since the end of November 2016.

62 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2016

Vehicle stalls after sudden stop requiring it to be restarted . I was told by Subaru sales there is a TSB # 16-90-13 r (1/6/14 issued). This relates to the transmission ( cvt) looking up after a sudden stop due to a thrust washer inside the torque converter. This is a dangerous issue that needs to be addressed immediately with a full recall.

63 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Subaru Outback. While driving various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was able to restart the vehicle on the first attempt. The dealer diagnosed that the torque converter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 93,000.

64 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2016

Subaru has a known technical service bulletin 16-90-13r that identifies an issue the the torque converter that is causing Subaru vehicles to stall when breaking. This is a safety issue that must be fixed in order to avoid accidents while driving. Despite being a known safety issue, Subaru has not issued a recall. Rather Subaru owners are left to pay the $1500 cost of correcting the torque converter issue. My 2011 Subaru Outback is stalling out when braking at intersections and par.

65 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

My 2011 Outback has recently started stalling out at stop signs. It will stall 5 times in 2 miles. It starts right back up but will stall again at the next light or stop sign (local streets). Apparently Subaru has a service bulletin 16-90-13r that indicates this problem is a poor design of the torque converter. I've read many similar accounts on line. Subaru should issue a recall. It's an expense repair and a safety hazard.

66 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 07/11/2016

Began noticing vehicle shuddering and quitting or almost quitting when coming to a stop. Has continued to do this for months now and seems to be getting worse. Took it to dealer and it was diagnosed at torque converter sticking after several tests. Referenced to Subaru TSB no. 16-101-16. Dangerous design flaw as it can leave you without power after coming to an abrupt stop such as braking to avoid hitting a stopped vehicle leaving you unable to move away from other cars without restarting vehicle. My vehicle is in excellent condition aside from this issue but is out of powertrain warranty and the cost to repair are prohibitive. Request to issue recall for safety issues primarily and to not ultimately cause damage to transmission in the long term.

67 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2016

Vehicle intermittently shudders and stalls when coming to full stop, requiring shift to park or neutral to restart. Frequency of occurrence is rapidly increasing. Dealer cited service bulletin 16-90-13r and replacement of the torque converter is necessary to correct the problem.

68 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/29/2016

Vehicle stalled on inclines when brakes were applied creating a very dangers situation. Dealer sighted service bulletin 16-90-13r for design change to the cvt torque converter but would not absorb total cost of repair since car has 107102 miles and out of warrantee. This situation should create a product recall before someone is seriously injured.

69 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

My transmission was serviced for a torque converter recall at this date. Just a few thousand miles later my transmission continues to deteriorate. It makes loud noises while driving. My Subaru dealer indicates the transmission could fail at any time and will fail eventually. Subaru corporate says that this is not their problem. They have an arbitrary 100,000 warranty for the issue. I'm concerned the issue will cause me to be involved in an accident. Or leave me stranded, both of which are safety issues. Can you please help me resolve this with Subaru. Shouldn't by transmission warranty have reset, when they serviced the trans for the torque converter recall. Thank you for your assistance.

70 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2015

My Outback is stalling at red lights and sudden stops. Took to dealership and they said the torque converter is failing. They said Subaru is aware of the problem. This needs to be recalled due to a safety issue. There are many who are having this problem.
