Failure Date: 12/09/2009

My wife had an uncontrolled acceleration event in her 2008 Subaru Outback when she was trying to park behind another car. She didn't think the floor mat was involved. She had winter boots on and thought she was only pressing on the brake. Her front license plate was torn and she did about $700 of damage to the other car's rear bumper.

40 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/14/2006

Just started car and pulled up to stop light and hit break pedal. All of a sudden there was a sudden acceleration and the car started forward and I had to lean on the break very hard to stop. This occurred 2 times both after starting the car after at least a 1 hour off time. I thought at first it was my foot on both pedals but the second time I stopped the car with my left foot and was nowhere near the accelerator. I contacted Subaru but they denied any problem. I put if off until I saw an article in st louis post dispatch to letters to tom and ray magliozzi the car guys and the letter was from another Subaru Outback owner with the same problem.

Engaged car into reverse and immediately the car suddenly accelerated at full throttle. I was able to stop car after approximately 10 feet of movement. Found this problem has been thoroughly documented by other Outback owners. Something must be done!.

43 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2004 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/31/2005

On two separate occasions, with two different drivers, my Subaru Outback 2004 vehicle experienced dangerous sudden acceleration. In both cases, we were stopped in traffic for a few minutes, foot on the brake, when suddenly, the car began to surge forward. Even exerting strong pressure on the brake, the car continued to surge forward, the engine racing. On one occasion, we were behind other stopped cars and almost rear-ended the car in front of us. On another, we were stopped at a cross walk and almost lurched forward into pedestrians. In both cases, we then threw the car into neutral (it is an automatic). The engine then raced wildly for a few seconds. We then threw it into park. At this point, the engine continued to race, then subsided. A moment later, the car was behaving normally again. Our initial calls to Subaru were regarded with lightheartedness. They told us, in essence, we didn't know how to drive (each driver has more than 30 years driving experience). A search on the internet reveals many other Subaru owners who have had this problem, and a Subaru history of ignoring it and their customers' safety. Shame on Subaru. Please take action to prevent injury or death resulting from this unsafe vehicle.

45 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/28/2004

Unintended acceleration and braking, when depressing the gas pedal it takes right off, can take foot off the gas pedal and it still surges forward. It is hard to slow down the vehicle when hitting brakes. This problem got so bad that it wouldn't let consumer make a turn. Had to keep going forward inside. Railroads tracks were there and hit the mound. Had to replace brake pads and rotors. It was 1000. 00 miles when it was done last June.

46 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/05/2003

Car has significant hesitation during periods of acceleration, usually around 2500-3500 rpm. Potentially dangerous in many driving situations. Have reported to dealer multiple times. Response is always "cannot reproduce - computer shows operating as designed". Car also has spontaneous acceleration at low speed, such as first taking foot off brake.

The vehicle experienced sudden acceleration.

48 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem of the 1998 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/15/2002

Driving along between 40 and 50 mph the car suddenly accelerated. I applied the brakes which slowed the car down but the engine continued to race mild panic set in. I attempted to put the car into neutral and instead accidently put the car into reverse. This did stop the car, but as you would expect. I have incurred an unknown amount of damage to the transmission. Although I don't expect any sympathy because of my awkward handeling of the shifter. I would like to know what if anything Subaru intends to about this very dangerous unexpected acceleration problem. Your complaint site has similar such complaints on record. Mine will be the ninth. When you consider that many people have probably experienced. The same problem but have not bothered to formally complain, it would seem that a real problem does exist. Thank you. Dt.
