10 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/17/2014

Since the recent temperature drop where we live (maryland, DC metro region), we've noticed a strong gasoline smell inside the car's cabin. The smell is strong enough that we are uncomfortable driving long distances, for our own health and that of our children. The smell only appears when the car is running (though it doesn't seem to depend on speed). We've owned the car since March 2010, and this is the first time we've noticed the issue; it's also the coldest weather we've encountered since purchase. Apparently there's a fuel-line-related recall for imprezas of this vintage, but not yet for Outbacks.

11 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/10/2014

1st incident 1/10/2014- leaving a stop light car would not accelerate and vdc, cel and brake light flashing. Sat on the side of the road for about 1/2 hour. Husband came to pick us up and tried starting the car. The car started and was able to drive w/o further issue. Check codes and had misfire cyc 1,2,3,4. Local mechanic could find nothing wrong cleared codes. Husband noticed both drl lights were blown. Replaced both and when the key was turned on (not started) heard a loud squealing electrical noise from the area of the alternator/power steering pump where the electrical harness is bolted to the top of the engine. Started the car and it drove fine for about 2 weeks. 2nd incident 1/14/2014 - pulling away from a friends house vdc and cel lights come on. Turn off car and sit for about 20 minutes. Start car all warning lights gone and car drove fine. Husband checked codes and found misfire cyc 1,2 only 3rd incident 1/30/2014 - leaving stop light and vdc light comes on and car will only go about 3 miles per hour enough to get it off road and engine stalls. No cel this time. Sit for about five minutes start car and it drives fine and all lights gone. Replaced the battery and had mechanic clean out the abs brake sensors. Subaru America and our dealership where we bought the car are aware and can find nothing wrong.

12 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/03/2014

The smell of raw gas permeates the passenger cabin when the car is started in temperatures under 10 degrees fahrenheit.

13 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/03/2013

Same symptom happened twice: once just after starting from a service area on the interstate, the second on suburban roads I describe here. During a normal 30 mile suburban trip, after about 20 miles the vehicle suddenly lost power and the check engine light came on. The engine continued running but the accelerator pedal seemed to have no control over the engine speed or power. After coasting to a stop and turning the engine off for a minute the car started and ran normally, though the check engine light stayed on for a day or so. When we took the vehicle to the dealer after the first incident they were not able to interpret the check engine codes; after the second incident they found a p2138 code -- "accelerator position sensor" failure. They replaced the accelerator assembly and the vehicle seems to be running correctly again. As I understand it the issue is a failure in the accelerator position sensor: there are dual sensors in the assembly and if their readings differ the accelerator pedal is effectively "disconnected" and the driver loses all power. I believe this is a serious safety issue: the failure could just as well have taken place at high speed on the interstate without the possibility of a safe stop, and having the first indication of trouble being "losing all power" is not acceptable.

14 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/08/2013

After stopping at a stop sign, I attempted to drive off, but the car did not accelerate on application of the throttle pedal. The engine remained at idle, and the car rolled slowly into the intersection. Nothing I did corrected the problem until I placed the transmission in park, turned off the engine, then re-started the car. The car then performed normally until I reached the next stop sign, where the problem repeated. In all, the problem occurred seven (7) times on this day, apparently at random. That is, at some stops the car performed normally, and at other stops, the car failed to accelerate when the throttle pedal was depressed. The service department at my Subaru dealer was unable to replicate the problem and therefore performed no repairs. Two weeks later, the problem occurred again, three (3) times in two days. This is an extremely dangerous problem, because it can leave the car in a busy intersection without the ability to move until the driver turns off the car and then re-starts it. This problem has been noted by other Subaru Outback owners in online forums, and at least one other vehicle safety complaint has been filed regarding this problem.

15 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/31/2013

Happened twice in one week. All of sudden, accelerator not responsive and lost of power. Check engine light comes on and cruise flashing. After turning on and off or stay off for a night, lights went out themselves. Error code p2138 accelerator position sensor. Check sensor no obvious loose on connector. Press connect on and no issue so far. It seems the connector too close to the floor and easy to kicked or touched by foot. \ car was bought in buffalo west herr Subaru and used in toronto.

16 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/26/2013

While driving 70mph in the fast lane down the highway I turned cruise control on. As soon as the cruise control was engaged all throttle was lost. While in motion I put the car in neutral then back into drive and nothing happened. The car was decelerating so I pulled off the highway. Once safely on the side of the road I turned the car off for several minutes and then back on. The acceleration capability returned but the check engine light was on. I took the car to a mechanic to read the code which came back as the throttle control sensor. This is a very dangerous defect and should be addressed by Subaru America.

17 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2006 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/25/2013

I was accelerating to get on the freeway entrance in my Subaru Outback (with my wife and two small children) when I notice a complete loss in throttle response. The car was just barely moving due to the engine idle. Check engine light came on. I drove at that pace to a parking lot to check my options. I had not noted, until now, that this car has no throttle cable and is completely drive-by-wire. I looked at the connection of wire harness to the pedal assembly and did not see any red flags - no corrosion, etc. It appeared to be in good shape. I shut the car off, waited about 30 sec, and restarted it. It then got us home. When I got home tonight, I ran my obd diagnostic tool and got a p2138 error code. This is listed as "throttle/pedal position sensor/switch "d"/"e" voltage correlation" trouble code description. I am going to check into my options tomorrow, but felt this was worth reporting since it appears there are others out there that have experienced this problem as well. There is definitely a safety concern with a failure of this nature as I was traveling at a good rate and in traffic. Luckily, everyone is ok - but my wife and I worry when this will happen again. Thanks.

18 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/18/2013

In temperatures lower than 45 degrees f, if not 'warmed up' the car will make a loud thunk noise and lurch forward upon being put into drive. If the brake is not firmly engage, the car will jump forward. The Subaru dealer claims this is caused by the car's status as a performance vehicle, and engine warm up needs to occur to lower the rpms.

19 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/03/2013

I stopped at a stoplight. When the light changed, I pressed the accelerator and moved forward. I released the accelerator to slow up because of traffic conditions. When I pressed the accelerator again to move forward, the engine did not rev up. It was as if the car stalled. After several pushes on the accelerator ( 8 seconds worth) the engine revved up and the car once again moved forward just as if nothing was wrong. All this time I was blocking the intersection. This has happened multiple times now. Dealer indicates no problem found.

20 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/13/2012

When weather turns cold, the smell of raw gas comes into the car, as well as in the garage after parking. So far the dealer has just tightened a clamp, but what happens if I'm on a hi-way and that happens? I can't drive the car with a gas leak in the engine and to far away from a fire station so do I call a towe truck or my lawyer. Because the car burnt up? can't believe the Subaru dealership is being so unresponsive about this. Get this recall to all the Subaru having a issue I thought you had great cars not so much now.

21 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

In cold weather, my 2002 Subaru Outback cabin gets filled with very strong raw fuel smell as the car warms up with the heater on. It has gotten so bad, that my daughter nearly throws up every morning on our way to school in cold weather. This is an issue that my local dealer explained away has a typical Subaru thing in cold weather. This is unacceptable. This is a health hazard and Subaru is getting away with it. I have been using this particular car for the last 10 years, and every winter the smell gets worse and worse. Subaru needs to step up, acknowledge the problem and fix it, or face the very real problem of a massive lawsuit soon.

22 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/27/2011

Intermittent throttle disabled. Car becomes unresponsive to the gas pedal. Engine continues to run but gas pedal has no response.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer on four occasions where the head gaskets were replaced each time. However, one year after the repair the contact noticed that the failure recurred. The vehicle had not been recently diagnosed. The current and failure mileages were 84,000.

24 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2005 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/10/2011

Sitting at stop light - light changes green - no acceleration. Car will move at idle speed creep through intersection. Pull over stop turn car off. Restart w accelerator working but cruise control indicator flashing and check engine light on. Error code indicates pedal position sensor and dealer says entire pedal assembly needs replaced. New 'drive-by-wire' accelerator system for Subaru in 2005. Repair: ~$200 with no change in assembly from what the service dept. Reports.

25 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/13/2011

I purchased a 2001 Subaru Outback when the temperature outside is below freezing around 28 degrees or lower, there is a strong odor of gasoline inside the passenger area. I made an appointment with a Subaru dealer for January 5th, however I researched online and found this problem is common with no clear fix. I don'twant to take it to the dealer if this problem isn't going to be fixed. What remedy has Subaru offered for this problem?.

26 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 1998 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/01/2011

As my wife and I were filling up our 98 Subaru legacy Outback we noticed a smel of gas fumes on the way home as I backed the car into the driveway I noticed the smell of fuel even stonger. I went to the back and looked under the right rear and to my surprize the fuel filler neck was leaking fuel!! I placed a oil change pan underneath and to this day I still haven't fixed it. . Don't know were to begin with it and I'm thinking it's a design flaw seems like there is heavy corrision on the very low part of the filler pipe and thats were it's leaking from. I'm going to try and have it repaired but at what cost. I think that this should be addressed to and by Subaru of north America as a potentially dangerous design flaw and legal liabilty.

Failure Date: 12/15/2010

2001 Subaru Outback, 4 cyl. Strong gas smell when outside air/heater is on and tempature is around freezing or below. It has happened last 3 yrs and fumes can be avoided by changing to recirculating air. Dealer and other mechanic could not find problem.

29 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

I own a 2001 Subaru Outback, that when the weather gets cold, somewhere at and below 30 degrees, I get a gas odor in and outside the car. I have researched this on the internet and found that this is an *extremely* common problem with the car's gas lines and that Subaru is only acknowledging the issue on 2002 and newer models. Have you researched this issue before and can you tell me why no recall on 2001s was ever done? thank you.

30 Gasoline Fuel System problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/13/2010

Prominent gas smell inside cabin when temperature is below 32 degrees f. It is a known safety issue on Subaru's but nothing is being done by Subaru to rectify this poor engineering safety issue on their behalf. I have talked to Subaru of America via email and on phone and they say that there is no issue with this car even though there is thousands of people that are experiencing this issue.
