11 Parking Brake problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/03/2011

I turned right into a driveway with a steep upward incline and had to stop my car briefly to speak to a person helping with parking for an event. My car has a manual transmission, so I engaged the electronic parking brake to hold the car so I could get moving again without rolling backwards. However, the parking brake on my car automatically disengages as soon as the gas pedal is depressed (or even, actually, touched at all). Because of the very steep incline, by the time I had enough revs to engage the clutch, my car had rolled back into the street behind me. Fortunately no vehicle was passing at the time, though a serious accident could have occurred. I have noticed that the electronic parking brake needs to be manually disengaged if the driver seatbelt is unfastened, presumably as a reminder to fasten the seatbelt. In the future in a similar driving situation I would be tempted to unfasten my seatbelt before attempting the steep hill start, which would be the less dangerous of two dangerous options. I emailed Subaru to point out the problem and ask whether it would be possible to modify these vehicles such that the parking brake is always controllable by the driver. My concern was dismissed, seemingly without much consideration. I live in an area where steep hills are the norm, and have always driven a manual transmission car without incident, but the electronic parking brake on my new car presents a serious hazard. I would like to have this addressed before someone is injured or killed.

12 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/14/2005

While parked in neutral, with the emergency brake on, and no occupants, our standard transmission vehicle rolled backwards out of our driveway, across the street & into the yard across the street. Our driveway has only a very slight grade (less than 5%), so I'm alrarmed with the ease with which this happened. There were about 8 children playing around the street & yards. My neighbor & I both confirmed that the emergency brake was in the upright position, which I always engage before exiting the car. We do not know if there is a problem with the emergency brake itself, or if I simply did not pull up enough on the brake; however, if this can happen to a safety hound like me, I'm assuming I'm not the only one & that it's a common enough occurence to warrant some kind of indicator to alert the driver as to whether the parking brake is actually engaged.

13 Parking Brake problem of the 1998 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/05/2004

On October 6, 2004, I was coasting into a parking space in my 1998 Subaru legacy Outback. My headlights were facing a curb, sidewalk, and cement brick building, and I touched the brakes to prevent bumping the curb. As soon as my foot hit the brake, the car vroomed as if the throttle had been fully opened, and the car continued moving forward. I pressed the brake harder, but the car seemed to take off on it's own and was totally out of my control. The all-wheel drive vehicle easily bumped up the curb, and the car flew into the air and crashed into the side of the building. The car was totaled by the insurance company. Fortunately, I was wearing my seat belt (the air bags did not deploy). The entire incident happened very fast and was totally unexpected. Although I am thankful that there was no pedestrian walking on the sidewalk when it happened and that I am alive to be writing this, I am convinced that this was a car malfunction that should be corrected in this vehicle.
