1 Starter problem of the 2009 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/21/2022

The contact owns a 2009 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the vehicle would fail to start after being parked. The contact would have to make several attempts to start the vehicle in order for the vehicle to start as expected. At times the battery would have to be charged as well in order to start the vehicle. The contact was told by a tow truck mechanic, who assisted with jumping the battery, informing the contact that the end switch needed to be replaced. This was confirmed by another certified mechanic. The contact stated they called a certified mechanic to have it repaired however the vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 115,000.

2 Starter problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/10/2021

My battery has seemed weak for over a year. On a routine service, I had asked Subaru of santa fe to inspect my battery. It checked out as good. Yet, every time I started the car, it would seem like the starter was laboring with a drained battery. Of late I have had to jumpstart the car a few times, even. I took it for inspection today to auto zone, to see if I needed a new battery. They checked it and said the battery was fine and did not need replacement. I looked up the internet to see if others had similar problems. Sure enough, I discovered that there is a legal suite regarding an identical issue for the same year mske and model car as mine. The battery has never died while the car is in operation or moving, but only when the car is started. This could be a safety issue if the vehicle is stranded in a remote or unsafe location. To my knowledge,.

3 Starter problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/02/2021

Battery drains prematurely? I've had to have it jump started 3 times in the past couple weeks. Had it checked out & battery, alternator, and starter are fine. Battery just dead in the driveway in the morning. Roadside assist guy recommended filing a report because he'd heard others had had problems, too, possibly with back hatch not closing properly causing dome lights to stay on and drain battery. Did find back dome light on 1 night, turned off light, and reclosed hatch. I feel like I've been diligent since but it was dead again this morning anyway. Date listed below is most recent incident. Previous 2 incidents were about a week ago and about 2-3 days apart.

4 Starter problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

5 Starter problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/09/2021

We just bought this car. Used, less than 7k miles. I haven't even made a payment yet. My wife called me from the turn lane of a busy intersection with hundreds of cars speeding past. She was driving and stopped to turn left at a red light. When she went to go, the car turned off and would not start - although it appeared there was power; radio, lights, all working. A police officer and a passer-by pushed her into a parking lot after 20 minutes. When I arrived, it appeared the battery was not cranking the starter. I had her get jumper cables and yes, it started right up. No indication that the battery was having issues, no warning lights. I turned the auto stop-start off while I drove it to the dealership who couldn't even talk to me because they were to busy. Fortunately, it started up and made it home. Took my son to his baseball game and after sitting for 3 hours, would not start, got a jump. Took it home, let it run a bit, in the morning, would not start. The internet is full of people complaining about Subaru and this exact issue. This sould not be happening in basically a new car.

6 Starter problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/07/2021

On 3 occasions the car would not start after being driven. The dashboard lit up, radio worked, but no starter or engine noise. Subaru says there is nothing wrong with the car or battery. This appears to be a common Subaru problem.

8 Starter problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/02/2021

I am experiencing repeated battery drain leaving the vehicle unable to start. The dealer says I am leaving something electrical "on" when I park it. It has gotten so bad that I carry a starter jump pack battery to get it going when the battery goes dead. The original equipment battery rating is 200 cold crank amps below the standard of 550 cca seen in most cars. This problem has been going on since I first purchased the vehicle new.

9 Starter problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

10 Starter problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/14/2021

The battery barley starts the car. We have had to replace the battery two times. We have to carry a battery starter pack with use, because it will not start some times. So we have to jump it. We do not trust the car to start. The battery has good clean connections, it just seems to loose it charge when it sitting.

11 Starter problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/10/2021

Car had been running fine since purchased new in Aug 2020. I had a normal 6 month service appointment for Monday Feb 8, 2021. On Sunday Feb 7, 2021 car wouldn't start. I called roadside assistance and they came to my home and used a battery starter to jump start the car. I let the car run for 30 minutes to charge the battery. The next day the car started fine so I went to the dealership for the scheduled service appointment. I asked them to check the battery because the car had to be jump started the day before. When the service was complete I was told that the battery checked out fine. Refer to item #5 on attached service report. I drove the car home. On Wednesday Feb 10, 2021 I tried to start the car but it wouldn't start. Roadside assistance came to my home and jump started the car. I drove the car to the dealership to have the service department look for a problem. The drive to the dealership took about 45 minutes. When I got to the dealership I turned the car off and, with the service advisor standing next to the car, tried to start the car. The car wouldn't start. I've since look inline for similar complaints and have found that lawsuits have been filed against Subaru regarding similar complaints. See page #1 of attached magazine article.

12 Starter problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/09/2021

Battery on vehicle is constantly and consistently losing charge. Just replaced 2nd replacement battery. Vehicle has less the 5000 miles. Dealership installed remote starter that they stated was causing excess draw on battery so in November they disconnected it. Three months later, they just replaced 2nd battery.

13 Starter problem of the 2015 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/13/2021

Battery discharging/not properly charging. Replaced with new battery in 2017 at dealer's recommendation. New battery continues to not store charge/discharge, including when the car is parked at a store or a parking for brief periods of time. This poses serious safety concerns, as I have no idea when and where my car would not start. This has occurred in excess of 20 times in the last 3 years, and I am forced to frequently replace the battery and to always have a jump starter in the car.

14 Starter problem of the 2018 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/20/2020

Battery discharges after car sits for a few days or after short trips. The problem has continued even though I replaced the battery. Highly annoying. Have purchased a portable jump starter so I don't get stranded. I have used the jump starter to start the car at home and while away from home.

15 Starter problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/07/2020

On December 7, 2020, at approximately 1200 hours, I returned to my 2017 Subaru Outback after a brief shopping trip. The battery was unable to start the vehicle. I had to use a portable battery starter to start the vehicle. The drive from my residence to the store was approximately 20 minutes long. The first thing I noticed upon starting up my vehicle was it drew hard from the battery, almost not starting. I am not new to this issue, as it has occurred several times over the past 4. 5 years of owning this vehicle. The battery that came with my vehicle, purchased in July of 2016, was replaced under warranty at 808 miles. The battery was replaced again approximately 2 years later, suffering from the same issues. The battery would work okay at best, then start to draw hard on the battery, then die completely. When tested, all of the batteries were supposedly suffering from a bad cell. 3 batteries were replaced under warranty. The current battery was purchased just outside of warranty in 2019, as the last warranty battery was in 2017. This battery is supposedly a newer, updated model with more cca. I do not leave lights on in the car, or any electronics plugged in due to this consistent issue. This recurring issue has lead to a lack of trust in the vehicle starting, having stranded my family several times. To combat this issue, I keep a portable battery charger and jumper cables in the vehicle.

17 Starter problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/11/2020

The battery is nearly always dead at startup and I have to jump it with a battery starter. The dealer had said there is nothing wrong with the battery on multiple occasions, yet I have to jump the car in grocery store parking lots. The car only has 5300 miles on it, as we don't drive that much.

18 Starter problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/08/2020

Battery dies when parked in garage, sometimes only after sitting overnight. Careful to be sure no lights are left on or doors ajar. I'm now on my third battery in 4 years. Replaced oem battery with up sized group 34 to increase cca and reserve capacity. Also purchased a lithium ion jump starter to carry around in case of dead battery. The upsized battery began failing again after 2 years. Replaced with upsized agm battery. Can't trust the car to safely transport my wife and grandchildren anymore.

19 Starter problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/12/2020

Bought my car in March 2020, brand new 2020 Outback xt onyx edition 2. 4 turbo, in two month battery start dying after 2-3 days car parked, today July 12 2020 its dead every time I try to start a car, use booster starter to start the car.

20 Starter problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/10/2020

Dead battery problem. Having the battery go dead in a parking lot, had to have it jump started to get home. Had the battery replaced after a few more cases of slow starting, battery was replace by dealer. Had to jump start the new battery in garage two more time in the part week. Had to buy a battery starter box to carry in the car to be sure I can get home if I drive this car.

21 Starter problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/24/2020

In June 2020 I complained that my battery drained to the point where car would not start a few times causing me to charge the battery. I took car to my Subaru dealer and they told me the battery was ok and alternator was charging. I insisted the battery be replaced and it was. Throughout the rest of 2020 and into 2021 I still experience battery draining. I try to drive the car every week so the battery will not go dead. The battery does seem low as the starter motor sounds like it turns slower than usual. Due to covid-19, I have not brought the car back to Subaru yet to have the car evaluated. I am raising the complaint here because I am seeing online that others are having the same issue.

22 Starter problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/16/2020

In January, 2020, my 2019 Subaru Outback failed to start because the battery was dead. It did start with a jump but had a dead battery the next time I wanted to use it. I had the Outback towed to the nearest dealer over 100 miles away. They offered no help, telling me the problem was battery drainage from the remote starter I had installed. So, I drove home and then another 100 miles in the opposite direction to have the starter checked. The technician told me the remote starter was within acceptable range. I managed to get through the winter with a battery maintainer. The Outback was fine once the weather warmed up this spring. Then in may, 2020, I again had problems. The hatch did not open, made clicking noises, and beeped when I would drive the Outback. This problem after having to jump start the Outback because the battery would again be dead. Not fun, when I would have to call for help to get home from grocery shopping. My friend suggested buying a new battery with more cranking power, which I did. Now, the Outback is working fine. Will it last??? then when contacting Subaru of America to see if I could get some reimbursement for the battery, the representative told me there was a recall on my Outback due to fuel pump problems. I have not received a notification.

23 Starter problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/09/2020

Vehicle bought in 2017. In 2018, battery drained three different occasions: twice, I had to call roadside assistance; third time, another person helped me start my car. I happened on 9/30/18, after parking outside an animal hospital. I took it to the dealership to get it checked and I was explained that the battery doesn't charge enough during short trips. I opted to buy a car starter portable battery, given the frequency and inconvenience of getting stuck in places. I ordered it on October, 2018. I don't recall how many times I used the car starter kit in 2019. However, in 2020, it has been already 4 times I've had to use it to start my car: once on 04/04/2020 and since then, other three times. Once after being parked for a few days, and today, 05/09/20, twice: after stopping, waiting to drive into a ferry, and then, to start the car to leave the ferry.

24 Starter problem of the 2020 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/20/2020

After the car had sat for about 10 days, when we went to use it and initially we got a lot of bells and chirps going off along with numerous warning/indicator lights. But the starter would not turn over at all. We went back into the house to get the keys for our other vehicle, but decided to try and start the car a second time. This time the battery was completely dead - no instrument lights came on at all. (at the time the car had a little under 3200 miles total miles on it and was a little over 3 months old). I recharged the battery the next for a few hours and then drove it to the dealer the following day. They kept it for a few days but couldn't find anything wrong with the battery or charging system, and no action was taken by them. (note: I had also discovered a small oil leak at that time, which they fixed at that time) I have since discovered that there is a class action suit against Subaru regarding battery problems on Outback model vehicles. Today [5-11-20] when I went to drive to have a blood test taken I noted that the battery was somewhat low (I. E. : the engine turned over slower than normal).

25 Starter problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/02/2020

Battery died after driving 10 miles and parking for an hour. Couldn't move shift lever or release electronic parking brake. Someone finally jumped the car for me y and I immediately bought a new battery (battery $151. 19 and jumper cables 26. 99 at pepboys, dbpower jumpstarter 74. 59 at amazon). 3 months later the same thing happened after being in the garage overnight. No lights were left on or any obvious source of electrical drain. I could have been stranded somewhere.

26 Starter problem of the 2014 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/09/2020

Since 5/2019 my Subaru has been in for service 5 times due to the dashboard lights flashing while driving. The brake light, check engine light, and the cruise control light. My remote starter and radio do not work either. Each time it's brought in for the same problem I am given a different reason, charged a fee and sent on my way, until it happens again! getting a little tired of having my chain yanked. Subaru needs to do a recall for this recurring problem. My car ran fine until the passenger air bag was changed, due to a recall.

27 Starter problem of the 2014 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/26/2019

Battery failing prematurely even new. Leaving drivers and occupants stranded in winter freezing , or summer hot weather. I had total of 4 episodes of battery failure in my 2014 Outback bought new on 8/12/2014. Subaru factory battery failed twice when car was less then 20k miles in January 2017, replaced under warranty, then again failed twice again with the replaced battery 11/26/2019 at 47k miles. Subaru dealer refused to replace the battery this time stating warranty had expired. 28 Starter problem of the 2019 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/15/2019

Battery completely discharged after several days of not using vehicle, this happened on several occasions during first year of ownership. Initially we thought it was related to leaving the key in or near the vehicle, or the auto close back hatch not completely closing due to mat obstruction. After being stranded several times and almost missing a flight we purchased a battery starter. It was ironic and a little humbling to have to carry a battery starter around with you in a brand new car so you wouldn't get stranded somewhere - especially a vehicle marketed to adventurous folks who park at remote trailheads. I eventually purchased a new higher amp battery which has larger mitigated the issue, but I still periodically charge the new battery as additional insurance. I measured a parasitic discharge rate of ~114 MA which is above baseline of 50 MA cited by some, but below 150 MA threshold mentioned by others. Suburu (both dealership and customer service) were made aware of the issue but didn't offer to diagnose or remedy, attributing the issue to not driving the vehicle often enough in combination with suggestion we purchase a better battery given our driving habits. So we have a vehicle with a relatively high parasitic drain rate that comes with a under sized battery, leaving the customer to wonder what is going on and creating potential safety issues in terms of non-starting vehicle.

29 Starter problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

Rear door (trunk) does not stop closing or does not opening nor by button on the front panel, nor by remote. Battery is getting discharged after I stop and close it. I have to keep the jump starter battery in the car and use it every week, sometimes - every day. Battery itself was tested good several times (I've started with it). All surfaces around end switches are clean, there a re no alarm indication about open door. At dealership they charged me $80 but did not find/help at all.

30 Starter problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/21/2018

Dead battery. Three times my car has failed to start and the battery when tested with a load tester says,"bad battery". After boosting and running for a few minutes it tests "ok" and the alternator and starter test ok. Upon the 3rd time it malfunction I had it taken to the //dealer on a roll deck. The dealer can not find the problem and just charges the battery and says it is ok. "it is not ok when it happens @ 25,00 km. And 32,000 km and 40,000 km. The battery has less cranking amps then my riding lawnmower, but the dealer says that is what Subaru recommends . What can I do to get them to treat the cause, not the symptoms? each time it happened I was lucky to be close to help.

31 Starter problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/05/2017

The contract called on behalf of his father who owns a 2017 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that the battery was replaced on several occasions. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to miller hill Subaru (4710 miller trunk hwy, duluth, mn 55811) where the failure was diagnosed as a faulty battery, remote starter, sensor and rear liftgate. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was filed. The failure mileage was unknown.

32 Starter problem of the 2017 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/23/2017

7,180 mileage, purchased new 12-2016. Garaged kept, 80 degree temp. We both are 70 + years, safety reliability are major considerations. On 10-21-17, we made a 20 mile grocery trip. Auto drove as usual. On 10-23-17, we had m. D. Appointment. Starter wouldn't turn motor over. Original battery came with the car, had zero electrical energy left. . . I connected my battery charger to the battery posts, waited 10 minutes. Dash lights came on, motor still wouldn't turn over. Charged battery an additional 30 minutes, and switched charger mode to 50 amp 'start' mode, starter motor slowly turned, and motor started. Made the 60 mile trip to m. D's office, and back home, and when arriving home, found out that the passenger nor driver's electric window wouldn't open, to get mail from our mail box. On 11/26/17 I took the car to Subaru of jacksonville. Three hour wait at dealer, even with an appointment. The warranty repair was listed as ecm update. Dealer's work order copy re. Windows was " all systems operating as designed. " service department mentioned that there may be an additional update required. With our last couple of g. M. Cars, various "updates or adjustments" were made via satellite. This technology is certainly available. . . With bluetooth perhaps, through cell phone ? I made the 30+ mile trip from the dealer home to st. Augustine without further problems.

Car had fire at starter with lots of smoke coming from transmission and alternator . Vehilce had been having shifting issues and traction from all wheel drive not working. Vehicle warmed up for 5 minutes. Once warmed up, owner turned the vehicle off and attempted to restart 20 minutes later. Vehicle would not restart but other electrical components (lights, radio, etc) worked but the starter would not engage.
