2 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

Steering on this vehicle is so heavy that it causes orthopedic problems. The steering drag tension is set so high that it is difficult to control the vehicle at highway speeds, and difficult to maneuver the vehicle into parking places at low speeds. Parallel parking is painful. I had other people drive it to eliminate my subjective view of this, and every person thought it was hard to drive. Subaru thinks this is normal, and refuses to allow its service departments to adjust the tension if it's within it's "specs" even when the driver of this expensive vehicle does not feel safe driving it. Subaru service department's reasoning was that "it felt like every other Subaru Outback. " this doesn't make it ok; it just confirms that Subaru is selling more than one dangerous car. This is an unsafe condition that Subaru is allowing to persist rather than actually addressing the other issue the unreasonably tight tension is masking - steering wheel shakes. This is my second Subaru and is the last one I will ever purchase - not because the car couldn't otherwise be a good vehicle, but because this is a legitimate safety issue that Subaru is ignoring and will continue to ignore until forced to change, probably after a large lawsuit brought by the estate of a Subaru owner who was killed in their vehicle. And, because Subaru has such terrible customer service that it thinks it's fine to tell someone who just bought a $30k+ car that they just have to live with an unsafe condition because Subaru doesn't see fit to fix it.

6 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/29/2010

1. ) 2011 Subaru Outback premium - new car purchase - with less than 300 miles on it. 2. ) the car loses control at upper speeds (65mph+) where it sways out of control as if an icy patch was hit. The steering wheel also shakes at a rapidly low frequency creating a numbness in the driver's hands and forearms making it difficult to hold the steering wheel. This occurs every day when above 65mph. 3. ) Subaru dealerships have said they can not repeat the issue (however they do not take the car outside the city, therefore they are not driving beyond 65mph). No parts or repairs have been provided although tires were checked over for balance. This is an on going issue with Subaru owners for the 2010 and 2011 model. I know of other Subaru owners who have had tires rotated, balanced, etc and nothing has changed. Thousands of forums are now online in regards to this.

7 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/01/2010

Subaru Outback steering wheel shimmy and vibration. I purchased my 2010 Subaru Outback new in October of 2010. After driving the vehicle home and spending a few miles getting used to the feel and sensation of a new car, I noticed that the ride of the car was somewhat unsettled, vibrating and shaking at highway speed. I initially attributed this to the new tires and slightly overly inflated tire pressure. I precisely adjusted the tire pressure and spent the next few months waiting for the tires to "settle in" and smooth out. My wife started driving the car regularly and did not mention any issue about the ride. I drove the car several times afterwards and on each trip found the car very very uncomfortable to drive. The ride is noticeable leaving the driveway but is most apparent at highway speed, most especially in low power situations like coasting down descents at greater than 60mph. The steering wheel shakes dramatically in this situation. Thinking that the cause of the shaking was the oem tires, I removed the conti contisport tires and replaced them with michelin defender xt's from costco. Almost immediately, I noticed that the tires were no smoother than the oem's. I had costco remove and rebalance the tires. The steering wheel shake and vibration remained even after the rebalance. I was about to return the car to costco when I found the link on the Subaru forum about "shaky Subarus" and that the problem was so widespread that a technical service bulletin (TSB) had been issued about the problem, mandating that major modifications be made to the car. I have not been notified by soa about the TSB.

9 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/10/2010

2011 Subaru Outback 2. 5i limited purchased Aug 10, 2010. Noticed steering wheel vibration from time of purchase, assumed it was just me getting used to driving the car. A week later even more noticeable, brought to the attention of the dealer. Checked balance, found two tires out of round. Replaced those tires (TSB 05-50-10), rebalanced - vibration still there. Dealer then installed vibration kit (TSB 05-48-10), vibration persists. Head of service stated he did not notice vibration at 65mph, tech taken for ride with this owner (owner drove car - average speed 70-75mph). Tech observed vibration, stated "this shouldn't be like that on a new car. " awaiting response from service manager on next steps. In the course of a month, my car has spent 5 days at the dealership! very disappointed in Subaru at this time!.

10 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/31/2010

Purchased new Subaru 2011 Outback on 07. 31. 10. Immediately noticed vibration in steering beginning at 60mph and gradually get worse at 70mph. Contacted dealer and was advised to have car looked at. On 08. 23. 10 the dealer test drove vehicle and confirmed slight vibration in steering wheel. They adjusted tire pressure but didn't correct problem. On 08. 27. 10 left car at dealer to have tires road force balanced. After road force balancing the steering wheel vibration is better but still noticeable. The service manager claims some vibration is normal for Outback. Still believe there is a problem but will drive care for several hundred miles before returning to see if problem gets worse. Opened case with Subaru. Extremely disappointed in response from dealer and Subaru to this problem since it's a very expensive auto.

11 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/14/2010

Steering wheel of the vehicle started shaking bad around 500 miles. It is a constant pulsation left/right. Hand/arm pains and aches while trying to hold the steering wheel. This is also termed as shimmy / steering wheel shake problem and Subaru has 2 TSB in effect 05-50-10 and 05-48-10. 05-50-10 (rfb) was performed. That did not fix the issue and the steering wheel still continues to shake. They have not yet scheduled 05-48-10 (bunch of parts replacement) for me, but I have a case opened with soa (Subaru of America) - case # [xxx] in addition, during long moderate-speed turns like highway ramps, highway entrances the steering wheel pulsates. It feels like there is a "free-play" going around mid-turn. Also, I would have to hold the steering wheel tight otherwise it tends to go away or float. From what I get from other owners who got this TSB done, the problem has not been fixed. Subaru seems to be masking the problem rather than fixing the problem. . Read more...

14 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/21/2010

15 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 03/28/2010

Starting from 1,700 miles, this car started developing the vibration on the steering wheel. This vibration/shimmy is more pronounced on highway (>70mph) but noticeable in other speeds. I have owned a couple of vehicles and this kind of shimmy/vibration has never happened on any cars that I owned/drove. I am 100% sure it is not normal road feel and it didn't happen during the first 1,700 miles. Also, the car doesn't track straight and drifts on highway. Two alignments, tire balancing and rotation have been done but the vibration and drifting persist. I definitely consider the steering wheel vibration and drifting a safety issue since it totally isolated the road feel on highway. Also, I just cant seem to have a confident control on the car during highway driving. Recently I came across the following forum for Subaru Outback owners and found this is a widespread issue for quite a few 2010 Outbacks. Please refer to the following thread. . Read more...

21 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 12/15/2009

The 2010 Subaru Outback exhibits extremely poor handling at highway speeds. When traveling at normal highway speed, the steering wheel vibrates, and the car feels like its at its limit. The car also tracks very poorly wanting to wander towards the shoulder, and is severely jostled around in crosswinds. When it encounters a stiff cross wind the car makes a sudden move, and there is a loss of road feel when the wind subsides and the car returns to normal. This sensation causes a possible over correction by the driver. Multiple attempts for repair have failed to correct these problems.

22 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/23/2009

I purchased Subaru Outback 2. 5i premium on 09/23/2009 and noticed a steering wheel vibration above 50 mph speed 1st day. Called dealer and scheduled appointment for 09/25/2009. They rebalanced tires, and it did not have a vibration under 80mph. About month latter, I noticed vibration around 70 mph, and I called a dealer, service manager told me they can not road test vehicle above legal speed limit. After I installed winter tires, problem was gone for about a month (under 80mph), then it started coming back. I just scheduled appointment with dealer (burlington Subaru, vt) for 03/25/2010, as vibration is noticeable at speed above 50 mph. This should be a recall based on number of complaints.

25 Steering Wheel Vibrate problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/30/2009

My 2010 Subaru Outback 2. 5i limited develops unsafe steering and handling at highway speeds. The steering wheel shakes and vibrates and all steering feel is lost. When this occurs, this car wanders and, with the absence of steering feel and the shaking of the steering wheel, it is very difficult to keep the car's direction stable. This is a definite hazard in high speed driving. At lower speeds the steering and handling are fine. Repeated rebalancing of the wheels has not fixed the problem. Switching to winter tires did not fix the problem. The problem seems to vary to some extent with small changes in tire inflation above or below the manufacturer's recommendation, but it cannot be cured by playing with tire pressure. My car was purchased in July 2009 and the steering and highway wandering problem has been present since the beginning.
