4 Tire Blowout problem of the 2001 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/25/2003

Hi, on February 25, 2003 while driving on the highway my left rear firestone tire on my Subaru Outback blew up. I was very lucky that no one was next to my car at the time the tire blew and I was able to pull to the side. The tire was firestone wilderness 225 60-16 h-rated. Part # 074772. The car is a Subaru 2001 and it had only 21000 miles when the tire blew. I contacted firestone customer service dept. And the firestone shop on dempster in skokie, illinois and was informed that I will have to purchase 4 new tires because if I replace only the tire that blew, it will damage my transmission. I asked why the tire blew with only 21,000 miles on it and they could not explain but said they will send it back to their factory for investigation. They were willing to prorate only the tire that blew, not all 4 new tires. I had to pay close to $400 for 4 new tires. I contacted your office by phone the same week and explained my problem to a lady in your office. I was told that I will get a form in the mail to be filled out by me but I did not get it so I decided to contact you by e-mail. A few weeks later, when I changed my oil at the Subaru dealer on grand avenue in naperville illinois, an employee in the service department stated that he was aware of another incident about a month earlier that a lady came into the shop with a similar blow out on the same firestone type wilderness tire and she had to buy 4 tires also. I am concerned that there might be more such instances and someone needs to investigate this issue before someone gets killed. The tire separated 360 degrees on its side around where the white circle is on the sidewall. I took a number of digital pictures of the tire that blew before firestone took it. I would like to send them to you either by e-mail or I can make prints. Please advise. Zelig.

7 Tire Blowout problem of the 2000 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/13/2000

Tire seam blew out in perfect circumference accompanied by profuse smoke. Extremely dangerous situation since I could not see what was happening to my car due to the smoke. I thought I blew a gasket. Brought tire to firestone dealer where they did a soap test. No punctures were there except the complete breakdown of the seam on the outside of the tire. They replaced it, however they replaced it with another wilderness tire. In the 28 years of driving I have had, I have never experienced a blow out like this or even seen one. The degree of smoke and perfect failure of the seam point to a problem worthy of your investigation. Please notify me, in kind, of the procedure you will under take to insure that the thousands of people driving the new 2000 Outback equipped with the wilderness tires will be safe from harm. I believe with all my heart that there is a serious problem here. Thank you for your assistance and support in this matter. **dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*734292.

12 Tire Blowout problem of the 2000 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/23/2000

I am not sure if I hit the center island and both tires blew or both tires blew and I hit the center island. If I hit the center island and both tires blew, then there is a problem since this is an off-the-road vehicle and the tires should not have sustained any damage. If the tires blew, and then I hit the island, then we have the same problem as the other firestone tires. Either way is not good. I lost control of the vehicle temporarily, but was able to bring it to a stop without sustaining any body damage. Only the wheels were destroyed along with both left side tires. I notified my insurance company, state farm, of my suspicions of firestone tires and also the dealer. But, this size was not included on the recall. I believe that there is something wrong. State farm has taken pictures of the tires through the body shop. ( dot number: tire size: p22560697h ).

15 Tire Blowout problem of the 2000 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/10/2000

The tire blew out on a curve, in winter, though there was only 6725 miles on it. The dealer said it must be that I was parking on curbs and it was my fault. I live in the country and hardly ever park at curbs, so this was obviously a manufactures defect. I didn't report it until now because I didn't know how. ( dot number: ).
