1 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/26/2021

The contact owns a 2012 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while attempting to reverse out of a parking space, the vehicle made a grinding sound but failed to engage in reverse. The contact shifted the gear shifter to neutral and had assistance from a bystander to push the vehicle out of the parking space. The vehicle was shifted into drive and operated as designed. The contact notified burlington Subaru (351 shelburne rd, burlington, vt 05401) of the failure, and was informed that there was no recall related to the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The contact's husband diagnosed the failure as a fractured reverse fork shift in the reverse cord and that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure mileage was 117,450.

3 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2016 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/24/2020

We have had 2 major issues with this car: 1- multiple episodes of battery failure requiring a jump start over the last year. This has happened when the car was not used for a week, but also randomly after a drive. Just happened 4 days ago after a 30 minute highway drive- when we came back out to the car after 15 minutes, it wouldn't start. We jump started it, and it was fine for a few days, but now dead again in my driveway. The car often has a shuddering and occasional stall when starting it. Most worrisome, I was recently driving with my daughter and after we exited the highway, and slowed down for a toll, the car lost it's acceleration, despite rpms revving. We pulled to the side of the road, turned the car off and re-started, and it ran regularly home, but this was frightening. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly #vpic#.

4 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/02/2020

Car shudders and almost stalls when slowing to a stop.

5 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/03/2020

Vehicle shudders and stalls when braking hard. It will not stall on a gradual stop but will stall in any situation when stopping quickly. Does not have to be a panic stop to stall, just hard braking. Resulting stall means loss of power brakes and steering. Have to shift into park and restart vehicle. Has no issues when running or driving. Engine runs vey smooth and has been well maintained as I am the original owner. It is an ongoing issue and repeatable in every circumstance. No computer codes set for this issue. Yet it happens every time there is hard braking which is every time it is driven. This is very dangerous and I am afraid to have my wife and son drive it much less myself.

6 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

Vehicle shakes and shutters when braking at higher speeds before coming to a stop. Stalls out often when approaching stop signs and red lights.

7 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/28/2019

Around 12pm on 8/28/19, my 2011 Subaru Outback stalled in the middle of an intersection as I was coming to a fast stop to allow an approaching ambulance to turn. I could not restart my car before the light changed, leaving me stranded in the flow of the intersection, unsure whether to continue through against the red light or stay put as cars drove by from both sides, a frightening and dangerous experience that left me shaken. As my safety was threatened by this incident, I notified Subaru of America by phone on 9/6/19. I was contacted by antoine laval (customer/retailer services dept. ) and will have an appointment with my Subaru dealership at 1pm on 9/13/19 to have the transmission evaluated. My car has been shuddering/stalling intermittently for months, and it is now clear that this is due to the faulty cvt issue referenced in the letter sent to me June 2017. Although the letter states that "for vehicles that are more than ten (10) years old or have more than one hundred thousand (100,000) miles, inspections or repairs under this one year coverage period must be completed on or before July 31, 2018," I am petitioning Subaru of America to fully cover the cost of repair/replacement of the faulty transmission in my Subaru as compensation for being placed in the dangerous situation of being stranded in the middle of an intersection in cross traffic.

8 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/08/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Subaru Outback. While driving various speeds, the vehicle started to vibrate abnormally without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the continuously variable transmission failed and the vehicle should be taken to an authorized Subaru dealer for repair. The vehicle was previously diagnosed at heritage Subaru owings mills (located at 9808 reisterstown rd, owings mills, MD 21117, (866) 738-1475); however, the mechanic was unable to retrieve a fault code or duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

9 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/06/2019

Within owning the vehicle for approximately 6 months, the vehicle began shuddering when coming to abrupt stops. This continued and by approximately 11 months, the shuddering had become more common in less abrupt stops and in some cases would stall the car. The issue remains persistent, however intermittent. The most recent time of it stalling was two days ago, approximately 18 months into owning the car. I've held up traffic numerous times due to this issue while having to restart the car, however this most recent time, it occurred on a steeper hill and, had I not reacted quickly with the brakes, I could have rolled back into a car and potentially injured the occupants and myself.

10 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/17/2019

Car would shudder when coming to a stop occasionally and feel like it was going to stall. I brought it to a mechanic who couldn't replicate the problem. After months of this happening randomly, the car suddenly lit up with all these dash warning lights, I tried turning the car off and back on but the lights remained on, afterwards the car would suddenly lose power. As it was late in the evening, I drove home, with the car alternating between lurching forward and losing power. The next morning the problems continued. I took my car to my mechanic who said it was a transmission issue and I needed a transmission shop. My car has been there for over 2 weeks. They said that there was damage to the transmission and that this is a common problem with these cars, I have yet to receive an estimate for repairs. The day before the issues started I had to drive an hour and a half away, should these issues had happened on the highway, the car could have stalled out doing highway speeds and caused a major accident. Furthermore, I was never notified of the warranty extension. I purchased the car in December 2017, the shuddering occured at random since I purchased it, I known the shuddering was a symptom of a impending large, catastrophic issue, I would have been able to bring it to a dealer to have it repaired as the warranty extension expired July 2018.

11 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/11/2019

My daughter was driving this vehicle on highway and the car started shaking and stalled. Thank god the cars around her avoided hitting her. She could have easily been killed. We took it to dealership and they said the transmission failed. This car only has 117 thousand miles on it. I have looked and it seems like there have been a lot of transmission failures with this vehicle. Because of this they offered an extended warranty up to 100000 miles but nothing over this. And no recall. They should be forced to do a recall. This type of transmission failure is very dangerous especially when driving on the high way. It is also very expensive to fix we are being told it will cost 10000 dollars which we can not do. We are not covered under the extended warranty because it is over 100000 miles.

12 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/12/2019

When braking the car starts to shake and then stalls. You then need to put the car in park and restart. If you apply the brakes and feel the car shaking, sometimes letting off of the brake it will keep it from stalling. It is still an unsafe situation.

13 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/26/2019

The car shuts off or shudders when slowing down to a stop or when accelerating. The transmissionis not working properly.

14 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 02/25/2019

Engine stalls if stop abruptly. Car shudders on acceleration at highway speeds and up hills when attempting to accelerate. There appears to a bulletin 16-90-13r but it should be a recall. Subaru should cover the cost of the repair for the life of the vehicle.

15 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/24/2019

Vehicle shudders and stalls when braking/decelerating. Engine shuts off completely and abruptly with little time to react. I have 128,000 miles on the vehicle. Mechanics do not know what exaclt is causing the problem.

16 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/05/2018

When braking to a sudden stop, the car shudders and stalls. It is similar to the feeling of braking without depressing the clutch in a manual car, however this vehicle has an automatic cvt transmission. This happened in an intersection, and there were cars behind me honking as I attempted to restart the vehicle. After some basic research, this seems to happen to many vehicles like this, that have the new cvt style transmission. Subaru did offer an extended warranty because of so many complaints, but this goes beyond that. A recall needs to be issued, it is a major safety issue.

17 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 10/25/2018

Recently while braking hard, my car shudders and stalls. It has happened on the highway and on side streets. It can also happen with regular to light braking especially if it is cold. After diagnosing my issue, my mechanic produced the technical service bulletin 16-90-13r which details the problem occurring. He and Subaru confirmed the repair is at least $6100. When I called Subaru customer service they told me that letters went out to all owners last year, but I never received the letter, and of course I am past the July 31, 2018 deadline,so they say I am out of warranty. I have spoken to customer service several times and am now consulting with my dealer to see what they can do for me. I feel this is a safety issue that should have been a recall and not a technical service bulletin to dealers and a notice to owners. I am also mailing a certified letter to thomas j. Doll, president and ceo of Subaru of America, inc. Detailing my situation and my concerns. I am attaching a copy of the notice to owners and the technical service bulletin my mechanic printed for me.

18 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/21/2018

I've been experiencing intermittent issues with the transmission where the vehicle would shudder like it was about to shut off when braking. I've also experienced issues where after starting the vehicle and placing the vehicle into gear, the vehicle would lock up. I took my vehicle to a certified mechanic back in September 2018 who pointed me to a technical service bulletin addressing the same issues I was having: TSB 16-90-13r, and recommended I go to a Subaru dealership for diagnostics, and repair potentially under extended warranty. I did take my vehicle and get a transmission flush which seemed to alleviate the issue. However, after taking my vehicle to my local Subaru dealership, I was told they could not reproduce the issue, or see any related codes; there doesn't appear to be any record of this issue recorded except for a related warranty request for seat repair. Now that I am experiencing this issue again, I took my vehicle back to the dealer. They gave me the same response and I escalated to soa asking for help getting this transmission repaired. Their response was the same as the dealership's response - that they could not reproduce the issue, and they will not perform the repair. I feel this is a serious issue that could lead to injury or death while operating the vehicle. However, I am still experiencing the issue from time to time, and I do not feel that this vehicle is safe. My wife primarily drives this vehicle to take my children to and from school and other activities. The last time this issue occurred, the vehicle would not start at the gym, and I had to drop everything to go pick up my child from school. My wife was able to restart the vehicle after turning off the vehicle, waiting for a minute, and starting again. This issue seems to occur at low rpms regardless if it is parked, or on city streets or highways.

19 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

Cvt failure. While driving. . Car shuddered, dash lights came on and stalled out. Mileage: 115. 000. . . Just over extended warranty. Cost of repairs 9,597. 70 plus tax. Contacted Subaru. . . . They will not help.

20 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2012 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/24/2018

2012 Subaru Outback cvt issue car will shudder while braking from highway speeds (40 mph+) down to 10-20 mph. Car lurches, similar to a manual car dumping the clutch. In the case of a hard stop this has caused the engine to stall twice, and come close to stalling many more times. Car starts up and runs fine once placed in neutral or park. I have to be extremely conscious of how quickly I brake, as you can feel when the tcc disengages. If it does not disengage before you stop, the car stalls. This leads to possible unsafe conditions, not knowing if your car is going to stall or not at a critical moment (turning left in a busy intersection). This would have been covered by Subaru's extended warranty that they offered to cover this known problem (seemingly instead of a full recall), but by the time my car exhibited these symptoms it was well past the arbitrary 100k mile mark and past the July 31st deadline (my car is at 116k miles, and this started occuring in the past two months). I drive a large amount of highway miles, and recently I do not feel safe coming to a hard stop if necessary. I do not see how a known issue that can cause the car to stall in traffic is not considered a safety issue that necessitates a recall.

21 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/20/2018

When braking to a sudden stop, the car shudders and stalls similar to the feeling of stalling out in a car with a manual transmission. The local Subaru dealer/service diagnosed the problem as related to the cvt transmission and estimated $2000 to fix. After some research, there was an extended warranty issued for up to 100k or 10 years through July 30, 2018. However, the issue did not start until August of 2018 and my car was well over 100k at that time. There are serious safety concerns in having a car die repeatedly.

22 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/11/2018

The car started shaking violently on the highway and all warning lights came on flashing, prompting us to pull over immediately with our two small children in back. We had to get the car towed and our mechanic noted the computer codes were for the transmission issue that Subaru was extending the warranty for. We took it to 2 Subaru dealers to confirm, which the 2nd one did after the 1st one refused to look at the car. Unfortunately, since it happened 11 days after their warranty expired they won't fix it unless we pay $4000+ or trade it in for a brand new car which we can't afford. If they knew this was an issue to provide a warranty on it then they should repair it for free as the car is unsafe to drive as-is. There should be a recall.

23 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/11/2018

Vehicle shudders and stalls out while decelerating on approach to intersection or to stop creating a potentially dangerous situation while in traffic. This has happened mostly on city streets but in busy urban traffic it is particularly problematic.

24 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/07/2017

Car began to bog down and stall when breaking. Car will start to shake/shudder and then stall when stopping whether the engine is cold or hot. The car will stall like someone forgetting to push the clutch in on a manual car when stopping. This has happened numerous times and most times I am in heavy traffic. The car will stall and requires it to be shifted into park, the ignition turned off and then the car restarted before continuing on. I have began to keep a video log of all the times the vehicle will stall driving from my home to work and other trips. This is a serious issue that Subaru needs to address. It appears they were made aware of this issue in 2014 but did not do anything about it until 2017 and even then they are not doing a recall but a "extended coverage". They give absolutely no details as to why other than to say "for customer satisfaction and care". No admittance of any problems by Subaru. Dealers can't tell you why either and it's up to them to determine if it's related to the cvt or not.

25 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Subaru Outback. While driving various speeds, the transmission failed. The contact stated that all four wheels seized intermittently and the vehicle made a loud grinding noise prior to the failure. Sendell Subaru (5085 us-30, greensburg, pennsylvania 15601, (724) 837-1600) replaced the transmission. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and provided the contact with case number: sr#: 1-35673914925. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000.

26 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 04/04/2017

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle shuddered and stalled without warning. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to dreyer & reinbold Subaru located at (1301 south, us-31 ste 2, greenwood, in 46143), to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic and was diagnosed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 104,000.

27 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/23/2017

The car shudders and dies while in the process of coming to a hard stop. You have to put the car in neutral or park to start it again. This has happened multiple times, once in an intersection. Very dangerous! there is a TSB (16-90-13r) out on this problem (failed thrust washer). This should be a recall! Subaru wants over $1800 to replace the failed part. My car has 93,000 miles on it. Seems to be happening on Outbacks starting around 80,000 miles.

28 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 11/24/2016

On 11/24/16 while traveling at highway speeds, (60- 65 mph), on the PA. Turnpike my 2013 Subaru Outback 2. 5i, with the cvt transmission and 94,000 miles on the car, suffered a catastrophic transmission failure. With no warning, other than somewhat higher than normal engine rpms, the transmission, with very loud noises and shaking the car, all 4 wheels locked up. This resulted in the car skidding somewhere between 200 and 300 feet. Just before the car stopped skidding, there was one last loud bang/clanging/ shaking of the car. We were extremely fortunate in that there was little traffic at the time, and we avoided any collision damage or personal injuries. The car had to be towed off the highway. While being loaded onto the flatbed truck, the front wheels were locked up, while the rear wheels were turning. This was with the engine running, and the transmission in neutral. I had to have my car towed 300 miles back home to a local Subaru dealership. ( not where I had purchased the car new) the initial diagnosis from the dealer was that the transmission fluid had been contaminated by gear lube. They based this on a visual examination of the cvt fluid from my car. This was disproved by my having the cvt fluid analyzed by an independent lab. Their conclusions were that the fluid had been severely overheated, and the viscosity changed to where it no longer provided proper lubrication as of 1/24/17, Subaru of America,(corporate offices) has denied my claim of a defective transmission, and will not assist me with any repair costs, or replacement. The local dealer and service department are still amazed with what happened, and the results of the cvt fluid report. They have not heard of this type of failure very often.

29 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2011 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/13/2016

Vehicle shudders and stalls out when coming to a stop and/or slowing down. The vehicle must be put back into park and restarted before it will move. This happened to me four times today. This poses an incredibly dangerous threat to anyone in this vehicle or around this vehicle while in traffic. Anyone in this vehicle is a sitting duck for an accident because you never know when it will stall out. I am appalled at the fact that I have seen so many of these same issues be reported and not recalled yet. Obviously this is a safety issue that must be addressed. . . Really - does someone have to die or get seriously injured for someone to take action here??.

30 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2013 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2013 Subaru Outback. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled as it vibrated with numerous unknown warning light illuminated. The contact also mentioned that periodicaly the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was taken to a local repair shop where the contact was informed that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 120,000. Dr.

31 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Car shudders and sounds like engine will die when coming to complete stop. If this were a manual transmission, feels as if clutch should be pushed in. Problem occurs intermittently. Cold or hot engine. Problem became noticeable around 58,000-60,000 mile.

32 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/27/2010

2010 Subaru Outback automatic,2. 5i, in first month of ownership noticed vehicle wanted to stall when I slowed down or stopped. Have had for 4 months vehicle is worse, rpm's drop to near zero, car will then idle fast to compensate. . . In the last month vehicle has a severe shudder, on top of the near stalling. . . Was told by dealer that Subaru has fixed problem on manuals but is still waiting for software for automatics to reflash computer. Car is very shaky after the near stalls upon acceleration. Car also accelerates when I have foot on brake and release to inch forward (waiting in traffic) as though it has a very fast idle. I was told by corporate headquarters today, that there is no problem with the automatics. . Just manuals???? my dealer disagrees and stated today that I am not the only person with this problem waiting for a solution.

33 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2010 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 07/25/2010

I purchased a 2010 Subaru Outback 2. 5i with a 6 speed manual transmission on may 2010. What has been happening is upon fully depressing the clutch to either slow the car down and/or bring the car to a coast the engine rpms drops rather rapidly which on several occasions has resulted in the vehicle borderline stalling before the engine computer compensates by increasing the idle slightly while coasting or slowing down with the clutch depressed. This is far more prevalent when the a/c is running. Today (sun 7/25) I was approaching a right turn, the a/c was running. I started the process of slowing down the car by fully depressing the clutch and braking. When I started to turn the steering wheel to enter the turn I barely could do so. The reason for this is the engine this time stalled. Generally you can hear the engine shudder before a stall, in this case it did not. It almost resulted in the vehicle hitting a pole with my two young children inside. The car restarted right away and I was able to resume normal operations. During the course of this same day on at least two more occasion I fully depressed the clutch to either slow the car or coast and the car shudder indicating a potential stall but the car compensated. This issue needs to be addressed ASAP because it will result in a serious accident. Thank you.

34 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 2002 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 08/13/2008

Clutch defects not acknowledged and not repaired by the dealer on a Subaru Outback 20002. Dealership: liberty, 1000 e park avenue, libertyville, IL 60048 problem started in 2003 and lasted to this date. In Aug 2008, dealer acknowledged present default but refused to concede that there was a problem from the start. When the car was serviced on many occasions started in 2003 (oil changes) we mentioned a problem with the clutch. The dealer blamed the "new hydraulic clutch" and gave us the run-around. Now in 2008, 3 years later, they "discovered" the clutch problem and wants to charge $1,300. 00 to fix it. We refused to have to pay for something that should have been done under warranty. Another garage told us that Subaru had issued an advisory about the exact same problem but the dealer never told us. The clutch is still not repaired. Both my wife and I have driven many manual gear shift cars with no problems, having driven our previous 1992 Subaru Outback to 140,000 before it needed a clutch repair. The clutch on the 2002 has been a problem almost right from the start. We have service report dated 06/17/05 invoice # sucs426989 saying: " ref#2 03suz : drive line - teck :553 - customer states at times vehicle shakes when letting out the clutch and taking off, more amplified after vehicle has been sitting. ---inspected vehicle, could not duplicate condition at this time- this was not the first time we reported the problem, but it is the first written acknowledgement from the dealer. There is a second written acknowledgement: dated 11/28/06, invoice sucs476828, ref j#2 08suz clutch ---tech 42898: customer states the car is chugging in first gear - see line 1 line 1 states j# 1 40suzdgrt diagnosis road test - customer states the engine light is on and car feels like it want to stall. Per scanner code, replace front O2 sensor and reflash ecm" as you see, they blamed the O2 sensor and refuse to acknowledge the clutch problem.

35 Vehicle Shudder problem of the 1997 Subaru Outback

Failure Date: 05/16/2005

In 2001 I had to have my transmission replaced because the engine would not hold the car back when going down hills. I was going down a steep mountain road and had to use the brakes alone. It did not matter if it was in 1, 2 or d it was the same as neutral. It would also not shift into the top gear on the freeway. It cost over $3000 to get a Subaru rebuilt transmission put in at the dealer. It had 97k on it at the time. I just now took my car to the dealer because the car was shaking and hesitating. The dealer told me that the car needed a new transmission and it would cost $3500. This transmission is only 4 years old and has less than 50k on it! I can't afford to replace the trans every 4 years.
