Software problems of the 2017 Tesla Model S

Seven problems related to software have been reported for the 2017 Tesla Model S. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Software problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2021

Since last year, I've been having frequent(6-8weeks) issues with this car all central touchscreen related. It started small but keeps getting bigger and bigger. I don't drive much since covid and I think if that wasn't the case the issue would've been unbearable. Last November it was just the screen shutting down while driving. This Jan/Feb the issue worsened where the screen/lights acted like they were possessed, the central screen display showed a battery warning to pull over as the car is about to die even the other screen showed over 200miles left. The worst of it all, I was on a narrow street(1lane each) going home, I had no noise no music in the car. The car went from silent to extremely loud on its own. Every single alarm warning sound in the car started at the exact same time at full volume. Startled, I veered off the road and quickly pulled over. If there were other cars nearby I would have crashed. I received a recall letter from Tesla highlighting most of the issues except the sound component. The service center refused to fix issues stating that it doesn't affect driving. Except that it does by startling you to crash. No other car does that. Both the recall letter and the 1800# confirm that these issues stem from a piece of hardware that need to be replaced but the service manager does not want to fix or replace the touchscreen. He says it'll be 1500$ to replace even though it's under warranty and assured me numerous times that the problems will then stop. He kept saying that a software update will temporarily patch things up until the next breakdown which is guaranteed and usually every 2 months or so. Seriously how can a software update fix a hardware issue(that he refuses to acknowledge even though his company has). This has been going on for a better part of a year. I shouldn't be forced to pay for safety at this point the service ctr is ignoring me.

2 Software problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2020

In 2017 Tesla Model S, the main screen goes blank once a week. I took it to Tesla service center 4 times in last 4 months. They reflash the software in media control unit but that didn't solve the problem. It is very dangerous to drive the car without main screen. Tesla service center is not helping. Mcu needs to be replaced and reprogrammed.

3 Software problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2020

Media control unit 1 software kept crashing and failing. Possible root cause is fpga and/or mmcu. Spent $2500 to replace with mcu2 to help eliminate issue. Seems like lots of owners are having similar issues.

4 Software problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2020

Touch screen is completely black multiple times per week. Usually at beginning of trips, but occasionally suddenly occurs in the middle of trips. Black out can last upwards of 10 minutes (per smartphone stop watch). Touchscreen blackout limits access to fog light controls, back up camera, garage controls, passenger airbag status indicator, and all audible warnings including emergency brake alert and turn signal noises. The vehicle is covered under Tesla's new extended warranty. I requested service on 10/17. Was scheduled to bring car in on 11/12 (next available). They said it was done on 11/13 after only completing a diagnostic and a firmware flash. No hardware modifications were completed. Same symptoms reoccurred on 11/23. I contacted them that same day and they gave me an appointment of 12/18. Today (11/24) they contacted me to recommend I cancel the appointment as the issue is (they say) software based and they "found no issues with the hardware" via remote diagnostic. Video link below of a recent 7 minute black out. Https://photos. App. Goo. Gl/3bdbafq7ylvjtxfu7 I have attempted multiple forms of reset/reboot when this occurs with no notable improvements.

5 Software problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2020

For about a year I have experienced spontaneous failures of the touchscreen, losing all climate controls and audible signal alerts while driving while the system reboots. The screen eventually goes black before the system reboots. I have repeatedly tried and failed to get Tesla to fix it. They keep telling me it will be fixed by the next software update, but that never fixes it. Also, the voice recognition and nav systems don't work 5 out of six tries, which is distracting while driving. Tesla also claims that will be fixed by a software update, but the updates never address it. I just learned about the high failure rate of the memory when Tesla said it was extending the warranty on it. I asked to have the memory replaced under warranty, but Tesla refuses to admit that is the problem and says the software fix is coming by the end of 2020. I have experienced all issues while driving on freeways, surface streets and sometimes while parked.

6 Software problem

Failure Date: 08/08/2020

The defective mcu went down and what is not being properly reported, especially in this pandemic world we now live in, is that besides the entertainment, the air conditioning (and viral hepa filter), the suspension height, the steering and acceleration properties, nearly everything is no longer accessible when the mcu fails because to the driver, these things can only be accessed and manipulated through the center console, which is in permanent shut down mode. Look, I perform fmea analysis for a living. This is a single point failure being caused by the poor decision to select an mcu chip that has a limited number of data writes to the memory, and that cannot be cleared out by any system designed into the car. Mine just failed last week and my car only has 30,000 miles on it. Tesla claims that they only warranty the entertainment system for 25,000 miles. The problem is that they've integrated the mcu and emmu as the single source of operations for all other vital systems in the vehicle. This is completely insane and is without a doubt a safety issue, as it was 90 degrees the day my mcu failed and dangerously hot inside my car, even with all windows down, which only got worse because there is so much thermal loads created by the battery, normally protected by the overheat sensors & fans, that are now not operating properly thanks to the mcu failure. It also important that you understand the most of the need to write to the finite mcu & emmu memory is caused by Tesla during their frequent software updates. Mine is a p100d ludicrous + and cost well over $100,000 when new. Tell me what other manufacture would be allowed to get away with designing a single point of failure that effects nearly every system including safety features, and then say its only covered for less then the time they know the first failure will occur. Criminals and make them accountable now please.

7 Software problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2019

I have reached out to Tesla 3 times to fix a sudden unintended acceleration issue. 11 days after I reported the issue and they told me my car was ok to drive I got into a accident. It took Tesla 5 months to give back the reports of the crash in which they said it was my fault. I have lost trust in the company and have seen that 127 other people have been affected by the same issue according to cnn please take care of this issue. Any Tesla owner is a pioneer of a future creation. After the accident they told me autopilot is on beta mode its not perfect yet. They should not allow public to use a hazardous software. Also Tesla employees were very negligent. I almost died in this accident with my father and the manager had no idea of my case even after my car was given to me and they said it was ok to drive. I got into a accident 11 days after they ok'd my car please help as I am frustrated and do not know what to do anymore or who to get to fix my car. I have documentation of addressing sudden intended acceleration to Tesla multiple times. Thank you.
