36 Suspension problem of the 2017 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 05/22/2024

Car rattles when driven and makes loud sounds when going over bumps. Took to Tesla with 50k miles on it and they said it needs new air spring modules on front left and right. Did not do repair as it was over $3000. My car was built in the fremont factory, the same as the cars in china that were recalled for the same reason. My car was a Tesla fleet car when I purchased it may of this year. Tesla had to know there was a problem and that’s why they wholesaled it to a different car dealership to be sold.

37 Suspension problem of the 2020 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 05/10/2024

After getting new tires installed at walmart I heard a loud knocking noise when turning the steering wheel. The walmart tech thought that it was because the tires were too big/wide. Tesla said they probably forgot to put the car in jack mode and the air suspension fully deflated. Once the sir suspension return to normal the knocking noise is still there, although not as loud and not as frequent. Both the walmart technician and Tesla technician confirmed the noise. Tesla said my front fore and aft links (aka control arms) are worn and in need of replacement. I read that this is a common issue and that Tesla has done a lot of repairs both in and out of warranty (some goodwill repairs). Https://insideevs. Com/news/702556/Tesla-suspension-claims-recall-senators/ Tesla technician talks as if the parts are wear items. I asked why they don't have them in the service manual and I wasn't given a good answer. The technician said that the bushings and ball bearings are wear items and that the fore and aft links get replaced along with them. I was given an estimate of $2,330. 69 for the repair. Attached is the invoice.

38 Suspension problem of the 2021 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 05/05/2024

Front suspension has a popping and creaking sound when driving and turning steering wheel. Safety issue as sounds something is loose but Tesla says no issue it’s the body flexing which is even scarier to hear the panels rattling if this is in fact true. Tesla will not do anything about it. Additionally the brakes and rotors squeal when pressed at slow speeds coming to full hard stop. Both front and back. Both brakes and rotors have 90% life and according to Tesla shouldn’t need replacing until 90k miles due to the regen braking. The braking system does not engage as it should or how it is designed and car has 40k miles. Tesla uses the excuse that that they don’t cover this as it’s a wear and tear component. Which another issue because they don’t know the reason of why it’s doing this. They want customers to pay and replace the brakes and rotors. Many owners with same car experience this issue and is a design defect that can pose safety issues.

39 Suspension problem of the 2014 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

I have put my car in the shop 11 times since I purchased it 3 years ago. Now my suspension is having issues. I don't qualify for the lemon law due to the age of my car. I paid over 30,000 for a car that is not going to last till its paid off.

40 Suspension problem of the 2015 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 04/04/2024

Ive been notified that my front upper, lower arms, and bushings on my suspension are damaged. Tesla has sent me an massive bill to replace the parts on the car that I am not able to provide. As a looked up and talked to other Tesla s owners, this apparently is a major issues with all of them and very common. So common that china issued a recall requiring Tesla to fix this manufacture defect of wreaked and poorly manufacture parts. Why is the us not forcing this yet? they should be held liable for their fault mechanic engineer of the vehicle that is costing us thousands of dollars to repair and replace even at very low mileage invoice attached. This was the cost after they gave me discount for replacing a part I did not authorize. This was an issue with the dealership still.

41 Suspension problem of the 2023 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 04/01/2024

Took my Tesla s plaid in for a tire rotation and found out that my Tesla Model S plaid cannot be rotated because the tires are worn deeply on the rear left side, the vehicle only has 12,928 miles on it. The costco representative say it’s unsafe to drive and the tires need to be replaced. The inner side wall was shredded so contacted Tesla and they stated you need an alignment and new tires. I informed them that it’s a new car and I have not done anything wrong with them, such as going off a curb or hit something to cause such a defect, the alignment specs are defective from the manufacturer, with a little more research from online sources, everyone with a Tesla model x and s are having the same issues at 10,000 miles. They state that the rear camber is not within spec and requires a camber kit to fix the issue. I strongly agree that it’s defective from the manufacturer if many others are having the same issue. If I did not get an alignment at 12k miles the tires could have blown on the freeway, thank god I got it checked. I have attached a photo of the left rear tire and a photo of the right rear tire to compare, this is at 12, 928 miles on the vehicle.

42 Suspension problem of the 2015 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 03/13/2024

This is the 3rd time a control arm on the car has cracked. I see tons of people online complaining about the same issue with the fault aluminum control arms. I have no damage and no rust and it just cracked on its on as I was backing out of a parking spot. I could have been seriously injured or my daughter had this happened on the highway. My dad is an issurance adjuster for 30 years and has never heard of any cars control arms cracking on their own. Please help as this is a huge safety issue and it seems Tesla has been putting the blame on the drivers. There was a grinding noise in reverse and the wheel was tilted inward. Multiple control arms have cracked in the car. A car that has no damage or accidents. This car is less than 10 years old and this doesn't happen with any other cars. It's a fault control arm part made out of cheap aluminum.

43 Suspension problem of the 2014 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 03/07/2024

While driving, my back wheel fell off. I had the car in for suspension work twice in q4 2023, and then on March 7, 2024 my back wheel fell off. When speaking with Tesla, they said that this sometimes happens and they have seen this issue before. The also told me that they think it only happens at low speeds, but I have found articles where people were on the highway and their wheel fell off. China has made Tesla do a recall for suspension and wheel issues, why haven't we? I now have had my vehicles suspension worked on at least 4 times, this is dangerous and scary.

44 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 03/05/2024

Left front lower link suspension component broke at low speed. Wheel moved aft and contacted sharp metal in the wheel well causing tire damage.

45 Suspension problem of the 2022 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 03/01/2024

Recall issue for my vehicle. Have been having issues with the auto steer/auto pilot that comes in the car. The auto steer automatically goes off and whenever you make a turn, there's a weird sound.

46 Suspension problem of the 2019 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 02/28/2024

The contact owns a 2019 Tesla Model S. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to complete a turn, the contact heard an abnormal sound emanating from the front end of the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed a failure with the front-end suspension and informed the contact that they observed normal wear and tear. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 58,000.

47 Suspension problem of the 2017 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 02/20/2024

When getting into my vehicle for work, my vehicle appeared to be lopsided with the passenger side of the vehicle being considerably lower than the driver’s side. Luckily I noticed this right away and was able to back up safely into my parking spot. I brought it into the Tesla service center and they confirmed that the rear suspension system/air compressor/air spring module on both sides are faulty and need to be replaced. They also stated that this was a “non-passenger facing alert” that they don’t believe was a new issue because I believe they stated the alert was visible 30 days prior when I had the vehicle in the service center for a different non-safety issue. After many days of research I see that this exact suspension issue thousands of Tesla owners more specifically Tesla owners of Model S/x years 2013-2018 see very frequently and in the state of California there was even a class action lawsuit due to this safety issue but for some reason there still has not been a recall? I believe that this on going suspension issue that Tesla has is a safety issue especially if traveling at higher speeds. This needs to be addressed sooner rather than later as it could lead to significant major safety issues if unaddressed.

48 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 02/18/2024

When I was driving in the parking lot and turned to park at a parking spot I heard a sound from the passenger side front wheel. After I heard the sound the wheel felt stuck and was not moving freely. There were two other passengers in the car along with the driver. This is the second time that this happened. It happened first on oct 2021 when the car's mileage was 51k and the second time when the mileage was 77k. The Model S was purchased in 2016. Tesla service center fixed it the first time and the repair listed the following 1>fore link assembly lh(1041570-00-b) 2>washer nordlock(1033093-00-a) 3>nut hf m14x1. 50 znni nl insert(1004358-00-c) Tesla charged me $495 for it. The second time this happened the damage was a lot more extensive and Tesla recommended I take the car to a Tesla-approved body shop. I took the car to brooks automotive in fremont and they charged me $10,000 for the repairs. My insurance refused to pay for the damages after I filed a claim with the insurance. Tesla refused to pay for it claiming it was not a manufacturing defect and the car was not under warranty. This car is driven by me and my wife and neither of us are rash drivers. We did not hit any debris on the road or remember an incident that could have led to this happening not once but twice. The car has been driven normally and used for normal family activities on public paved roads.

49 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 01/24/2024

The fore link assembly on the drivers side of the car failed while pulling backwards out of a parking space at low speed. There was a loud snap and then the front suspension collapsed and the tire contacted the inside of the wheel well. I will attach a picture of the aluminum piece that I found on the ground and I also have the piece in the case you would like it. Tesla did not cover the cost of repair although they replaced both the right and the left fore link (sound like this is a very well documented failure Tesla TSB-17-31-001).

50 Suspension problem of the 2014 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 01/19/2024

Front control arms left and right fr susp fore link assy , only the replacement is available for inspection upon request. The safety that was put at risk is unknown. It was repaired by Tesla at my expense. There were no warning lamps, messages the only symptoms was noise, metal banging.

51 Suspension problem of the 2015 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 01/16/2024

Tesla front right hand lower forward link failed at the ball joint (aluminum casting spilt open) part #1041575-00-a, frt fore awd lca rh, made in canada. This happened while backing up on flat pavement without warning. The car has been well cared for, garaged, never damaged or abused and has less than 52k miles. It could have caused a life threatening accident if it would have happened at speed.

52 Suspension problem of the 2014 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 01/10/2024

Premature wear on almost all front suspension parts relating to control arms and sway bar links. Recently had to pay out of pocket to have two steering rack bolts tightened, they were not torqued properly from the factory apparently.

53 Suspension problem of the 2017 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 12/26/2023

In February 2022, I struck a downed tree limb which caused damage to my vehicle. The vehicle was repaired at a Tesla service center and the entire front suspension was replaced and paid for by my insurance. The car seemed to drive fine after this incident. In December 2023, I took the car in to a Tesla service center for an unrelated issue (the coolant level was low). After completing the service, I received a call from the service center stating that the service technician noticed that the vehicle was "swaying heavily to the right" and that it was not safe to drive. The service center performed diagnostic work and told me that the left fore link had detached from the ball assembly and that both the left and right fore links showed excessive wear. The service center initially told me that I would need to pay for this repair. Had them verify that the same components had been replaced recently and that only 6600 miles had been driven on the new suspension. After I told them that I would contact my insurance company, the service center quickly changed their tune, said they would cover the repair, and completed the repair within hours. Assuming their diagnosis was not fraudulent, and that the suspension was correctly replaced the first time, I find it deeply concerning that a key component of the suspension would fail after 6600 miles. I have copies of both service invoices and my chat history with the service center that I am happy to provide to substantiate this report. I was not able to attach them to this form so please contact me if you would like to obtain copies.

54 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 12/23/2023

Halfshaft and control arm broke while backing up from a walmart store. Tesla dealer diagnosed it but the repair was not covered. I had to pay out of pocket but this could have been prevented it the car was recalled.

55 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 12/21/2023

Right front lower suspension arm bushing pulled out leaving wheel loose. Recognized right away but could have caused loss of control. No provoking reason. Taken to dealer who replaced part.

56 Suspension problem of the 2017 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 12/02/2023

Left lower rear control arm is broken. Luckily it happened as I entered the garage. Could have been catastrophic on highway driving. There was no warning message of light.

57 Suspension problem of the 2017 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 11/27/2023

While parking the left suspension fore link completely broke. The car only has 50k miles on it. I believe it is this issue: https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2017/mc-10110741-9999. Pdf https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/inv/2020/inoa-pe20020-5764. Pdf.

58 Suspension problem of the 2014 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 11/19/2023

Our vehicle has just over 100k miles, and we have had the front control arms replaced twice. Tesla says that we have to keep replacing because it's a safety issue, but refuses to take ownership of the fact that the control arms should not fail this frequently. In china, Tesla is doing recalls for this part and there is a class action lawsuit in the us. However, Tesla has told me that I need to keep replacing this parts because if they fail then the car could crash.

59 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 10/26/2023

While parking the vehicle, a loud shot gun like noise eminated from the front of the car. The car was being driven at less than 5 mph. After this there was loud noises from the front of the cars suspension. The car seemed unsafe to drive farther. I took it to the Tesla service center the next day driving at a very low speed. They replaced the right and left front contol arms and charged me $1204. 98 on October 26, 2023. The vehicle had 77,626 miles at that point. I queried them as to why this would ocurr at such low mileage and vehicle age? I got not response other than these things happen and the car is out of the normal warranty and the extended warranty. I paid the invoice since I agreed to the repair estimate earlier.

60 Suspension problem of the 2021 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 10/15/2023

The 2021 and beyond Tesla Model S comes installed with camber arms that cause the wheel to be tilted in and thus wears the tire on the inside to the point of wearing out within 6 months. This is a flaw in the building and pertains to all the Model S's 2021 and greater. This is a safety issue and is not addressed by Tesla. I think Tesla should be forced to provide a recall for this.

61 Suspension problem of the 2014 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 10/02/2023

Our right rear lower control arm broke off at the outer end. The wheel and hub dropped and cambered out away from the vehicle and the vehicle could not be driven. Fortunately this occurred entering our driveway at low speed. The car was taken to Tesla and we believe should have been repaired under service bulletin sb-19-31-001 detailing this exact issue. However, they are presenting a bill for about $7000. Claiming our VIN is not within this bulletin. We note that our car was purchased in January 2014 but also the bulletin says approximate. We also believe ntsha has been made aware of this issue but has failed to issue a recall. This is a serious safety issue! at freeway speeds this could have caused a total loss of control and a serious crash in our opinion.

62 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 10/02/2023

I was backing into a spot and felt the fromt. Left tire pull. I then took it too Tesla and they told me that the front left fore link was broken. This is a manufacturer issue why are they not responsible.

63 Suspension problem of the 2015 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 09/22/2023

Tesla Model S began making clunking/grinding noise when reversing out of a driveway with the wheel fully turned. It turned out that the front left and right fore links have failed prematurely and caused the front wheels to rub on the wheel arch/fender. No potholes were ever hit to cause the damage. Car needed replacement parts totaling $979. A wheel alignment was also needed. Car only has 97,000 miles.

64 Suspension problem of the 2013 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 09/13/2023

Driving at normal speeds and conditions my rear drivers control arm snapped off and wheel almost fell off , if driving at higher speed could have been deadly.

65 Suspension problem of the 2019 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 09/09/2023

Sept 9th, 2023 while driving on the interstate the vehicle lost all propulsion power, red lights shown in "gear, p n d" indicator area. I was in left lane and had to get to the side of the road, 4 lanes over, where putting the car in park and back in drive allowed for it to move forward again. I proceeded to a charging station to inspect the car and during this I hear a thump in the trunk area when going over bumps. Upon inspection under the car the rear access cover was hanging down but it was dark. The following morning a closer look revealed the rear subframe where the engine mounts had broken and a large piece of the frame was missing from the inside down. Mounting tab and hardware were still in place but pulled from the structure itself. The car was not handling correctly as if it had a low tire but tire pressure was correct. At drop off I noticed the rear camber seemed quite cambered. As a structural engineer I can see where the mounting tab weld to the aluminum frame failed. The frame appears to be cast and extruded tubing welded together and the failure is what would be considered a weak point at a weld. Car is currently at Tesla norfolk virginia for an evaluation and when I showed them the issue the staff did not want to document the issue and requested I perform a drive along with a tech. I asked why as the pics were evidence enough as to my complaint and issue. Cursory investigation online yielded this is not an isolated occurrence and with others having very serious failures I felt it important that perhaps it is severe enough for a modified part replacement. For reference no crash damage or any other like issues have occurred prior with the car.

66 Suspension problem of the 2021 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 09/08/2023

The suspension is very stiff and to the point when the smallest of pot holes, road bumps, or going over the road divider marker sends the shock to the body of the passenger. My family complaints of neck pain after a short ride. I live in san jose, CA. I drive with the comfort mode with the soft ride setting for the suspension. This deep discomfort, pronounced for rear passengers is also increasingly deteriorating. Tesla inspected my car on sept 8, 2023 - partially fixed the suspension noise. No change to the ride stiffness causing deep discomfort to passengers. Tesla inspected my car on Nov 8, 2023 for the same issue. No resolution. Tesla inspected my car on Dec 17, 2023 for the same issue. No resultion. I was told by Tesla technician who drove with me, that the ride is stiff, however, there are no fixes currently. A change to the setting and / or suspension will happen if there is a volume of complaints. Initially, the suspension had sound issues and frequent cranking. Tesla fixed it partially. However, this did not resolve the stiff suspension. I went to the Tesla dealership three times, each of the times, Tesla toggled with the settings but not avail. Tesla now claims that the suspension is what it is, any relief has to come from NHTSA or I have to sell my car.

67 Suspension problem of the 2017 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 09/07/2023

As I was backing up out of a parking spot, I was turning the wheel when I heard a pop and a ugly grinding noise coming from my front driver side wheel well. Initially, I thought I ran over something, but did not observe and debris under the vehicle. I proceeded to slowly pull forward and continued to hear grinding, but not as bad. When I turned, the grinding continued. I got out again to observe that my wheel had caught the back half of my wheel well cover and ripped it off, sitting in the wheel well still. A firm tug pulled the cover from the well and I could see the wheel was not situated in the center of the wheel well. After contacting the manufacturer, they towed the vehicle and I learned that the control arm had snapped and they would need to replace the whole front suspension. They also noted a couple knicks under my carriage and very minor scrapes on my bumper and said that the failure was due to outside influence and, thus, would not be covered by my active warranty. They said I was in an accident which is completely false. After research, I presented numerous instances of control arm failure for the same year/model as my car at very low mileages, including recall for the same parts in china, but they still refused to cover the faulty part. There is an open class action lawsuit for the exact same parts because the manufacturer refuses to acknowledge the problem. I had to pay to upgrade the suspension system which they now use in the car as they obviously don't use the old faulty components when repairing. If this failure was at full speed on the freeway, I might have lost control of the vehicle and been killed and nobody would be the wiser after the disastrous accident. As there is only a recall in china for this part, I am forced to pursue legal action through court to recover the costs.

68 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 08/31/2023

This is the third lower control arm to fail in this vehicle. Left front, left rear and now front right. All failures are the same, cracked castings at the ball joint or bushing. This vehicle has had to be towed in all three times as the wheel is no longer property connected to the frame and is undrivable without vehicle damage. Seriously, NHTSA needs to stop worrying about fsd and go investigate these suspension failures. At 50k miles, this is unacceptable and extremely dangerous. Luckily my failures have happened at slow speeds. If these failures happen at high speed, total loss if steering is possible. Please go after Tesla for these defects. These parts must be redesigned and replaced on Model S vehicles on the road today.

69 Suspension problem of the 2015 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 08/28/2023

I had driven to a shopping center for buy a new backpack for my daughter who was starting school. After shopping, as I reversed my car, I felt as if I had gone over a bump. I came out to see if there was a bump or something else in the parking lot but found nothing that my car could have gone over. I got back in the car and started my drive and immediately, started hearing loud and griding noises. The noise would get worse as I would turn the steering wheel and the car would also seem as it is going over bumps. I immediately came out and look around and found nothing; I then looked at the wheel well and the surrounding area and didn't detect anything out of ordinary. I was able to drive the car home (roughly 1. 5 miles) at speed no faster than 3-5 miles/hour without continuous loud and griding noise. I contacted Tesla who gave me an appointment for a week later. Inspection found fore-link broken. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? left fore-link connected to the front suspension of the car. Part is available for inspection. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? the breakage of the part made the wheel get disconnected from the suspension. Had I been driving on a highway or other roadways at higher speed, my car would have certainly gotten out of control and endangered my life and the lives of others. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? this is a known issue that has been reported by many Tesla Model S owners. There is also a recall in china for the similar parts. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? yes, it was inspected by Tesla service center. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? there were no warnings or other symptoms prior to the failure of the fore-link.

70 Suspension problem of the 2016 Tesla Model S

Failure Date: 08/18/2023

Was merging onto the the highway when all of a sudden, my passenger rear suspension gave out nearly causing me to crash into highway traffic. The wheel almost came off completely causing $14k of damage that I was responsible for paying for.
