36 Steering problem of the 2020 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 03/20/2025

The steering control arms were clicking and making noises when the steering wheel was turned. Reports on reddit said dozens of people had this problem right before they completely busted and lost control of steering the vehicle. I took mine in to the service center and they acknowledged the problem and charged me over $750 to fix. This is a safety issue and should be recalled and fixed for free. I have owned cars for over 40 years and have never had to replace steering control arms. They installed faulty parts.

The driving wheel locked during a turn on back road and ran right into a electricity pole. All air bags deployed and the electricity pole broke. The driver was slightly injured on her forearm.

40 Steering problem of the 2024 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 03/08/2025

The steering wheel is locking up. First while parked and attempting to leave. It does eventually unlock and appears to not have what I would refer to as power steering. While driving it appears to not have power steering and the steering periodically locks up which I would immediately brake a have to repeatedly yank hard on wheel until it unlocks at this point as of the moment of this writing the steering wheel is completely locks up and cannot be yank out of lock at all. I have a video of some incidents happening. One heading into on coming traffic another of the car driving up on a snow bank ( if the bank was not there the car would have ended up in a ditch ). There are caution indicators on the screen but none say stop do not drive. The first caution or warning indicator says stability control disabled drive with caution. Next indicator states traction control disabled drive with caution. Next indicator steering assist reduced steering may require increased effort. I find myself very lucky that no real damage injury or death occurred it was that dangerous on my over an hour drive. When the steering locked up in the parking lot I did contact Tesla and initially everything was fine but locked up again in parking lot. I contacted them a second time with the wheel unlocking at the but no one said dont drive nor did any indicators state that actually indicated I could drive but with caution. I believe that if I were on a busy highway things would have been much worse. I was lucky. There was no indication of a totally locked steering wheel in there diagnostics indicators also nothing stating do not drive. Actually quite the opposite. I can provide driving video upon request. There were other warning indicators I have some recorded. None of the indicators stated a totally locked steering steering wheel lock up and nothing indicating do not drive. I would welcome your agency to come inspect this. It is a total danger to society.

41 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 03/08/2025

Two weeks I had my Model Y serviced for shaking of the car and steering wheel. They deemed the cause of the shaking due to unalignment of the wheels and they claimed to have fixed the issue. After receiving the car for the week after it began to make a sound of something hitting every time I made a u turn or any time I turned the wheel. While driving 3/8 with my family in the car I made a u turn in a parking lot and heard the same loud sound of hitting. When I went to check two large approximately 3 inch bolts were on the ground but no nuts in sight and my control arm broke the bottom plate and was completely unattached from the car. Thankfully the bolts came off while in a parking lot and not 20 minutes prior when I was driving on a windy road. Within 24hours Tesla contacted me saying my car was ready for pickup without any explanation of why the bolts came off, no full inspection completed for other issues and no alignment of the tires. Under the Tesla mechanic notes they only reinstalled the bolts and tightened the front wheels and not the back. Upon further research online I have found numerous other people complaining of the same issue of the bolts for the control arm falling off on Model Y and 3 Teslas due to forgetting to weld the bolt nuts to the sub frame.

42 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 03/05/2025

3/5/2024. Upon startup, car does not have power steering. Error code ui_a020 on screen and steering wheel very difficult to move as car reverses. Put car back into park and arranged for alternate transportation. Manufacturer advises "monitoring and reporting back when/if alert re-occurs".

43 Steering problem of the 2025 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 02/21/2025

While driving towards our friends place, an alert came up saying "steering assist reduced" with error code gtw_w075. The car was running at about 60 to 65 mph and at that speed l, we didn't notice much issue in handling the car. When we were leaving for home, the alert was still active and at that time, we realized that the steering was extremely difficult to use. Herculean effort was required to turn the car left or right and we decided it was unsafe to drive. I then researched this alert and lots of other drivers had observed this error on their 2023 or older model 3 or yes. Mine is 2025 and not even 20 days old since I took delivery. The car had to be towed to the nearest service center.

44 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 02/10/2025

While driving heard a noise from front end. As I turned right the steering wheel turned left in opposite direction. I heard something fall and found a bolt that fell off the car control arm. I managed to get the car back to my garage and called Tesla service. They say it needs an alignment and are going to charge me for this repair. A bolt should not be falling off the vehicle.

45 Steering problem of the 2021 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 02/01/2025

My steering is making loud noises and so is the suspension. It’s so loud it’s embarrassing to drive. The steering wheel also came apart because it wasn’t glued down properly and had air bubbles. I see recalls for cars but not my specific VIN. Tesla says no wheel replacement for me and cost of replacing link assembly parts and bolts would cost me 2000$.

46 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 01/07/2025

Power steering occasionally cuts out during low speed manoeuvres, such as parallel parking, parking, and turning while stopped. When trying to forcibly replicate the issue (by moving steering wheel lock to lock while doing parking manoeuvres) computer showed codes epas3p_a122_olpactive and epas3p_a074_overheatprotect. Tesla says this is "working as designed" and will not fix. I have asked the car to be serviced for this issue twice now. Safety is a concern as the issue is unpredictable and I believe the steering could become difficult suddenly in a situation where it is necessary to move out of the way quickly. (ie. Stopped in traffic with emergency vehicles incoming).

47 Steering problem of the 2021 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 01/01/2025

Upper control arms wear out and start making sounds.

48 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 12/14/2024

There is a steering malfunction, with my Tesla Model Y it completely locks up and the steering is disabled. The steering doesn’t move at all the following warning and codes appeared on the dashboard. Di a223 traction control disabled drive with caution dl a222 stability control disabled drive with caution gtw_w074 steering assist reduced steering may require increased effort ul_a020 steering assist reduced steering may require increased effort. There is a serious and unsafe issue with this car. A potential disaster waiting to happen.

49 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 12/13/2024

While driving, I experienced abnormal steering control. I am not sure if it’s a mechanical or electronic issue. The vehicle was towed to a local towing facility. I have reported the issue to Tesla but have not received a response regarding an inspection or next steps. This could be a potential safety issue.

50 Steering problem of the 2025 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 12/05/2024

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? there were multiple component and system failures that were experienced. My vehicles autopilot and full self driving took over causing my vehicle to crash head on into a tree. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? my safety and others were at risk because I had no control over my vehicle. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? no. The car was taken into custody of the insurance company. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no.

51 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 12/04/2024

Vehicle control arms need to be replaced as suggested by the service department. They are currently clicking because they are not secure. I truly believe this is a safety hazard. Arms cannot be replaced for another month. Seems to be a widespread issue from my research. If arm fails, driver would lose control of the vehicle.

52 Steering problem of the 2022 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 12/02/2024

Driver side control arm while driving separated. I heard a loud thump and then the front driver side portion of the vehicle drop down. After further investigation, I have seen numerous vehicles have this exact same issue on multiple forums. I’m glad that I was going slow when this happened because it could’ve been catastrophic if I would’ve been going faster. How is this not a recall?.

53 Steering problem of the 2022 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 11/09/2024

Model: telsa y 2022 awd long range what component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? control arm bolt fell from driver side front wheel. Not available for inspection. Bolt got fixed by Tesla service center how was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? yes I imagine. Since I was driving in community driveway with less < 10 mph. I was safe. If this happens in highway, it would be big risk since steering gets locked and only one wheel rotates. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? this same issue has been reported mulitple times by other car owners over internet. As per dealer, this issue cannot be produced by him. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? component has been inspected only by the Tesla service center. No one else looked into it. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no warnings or indications. Car still doesn't know that it has a problem with front wheel or steering.

54 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 11/08/2024

The tire losing with steering shaft . The bolt come off , my vehicle can’t make hard turn make it unsafe to able to drive.

55 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 11/06/2024

Model y s/w version 12. 5. 4. 1 the Model Y can be made to oscillate in the travel lane at highway speeds I think I experienced this at 70-75, it would seem to apply at any capable speed. Proper behavior: 1) driving on the highway in fsd 2) trigger the left or right turn signal to initiate a lane change by automation. What actually occurs: 1) driving on the highway in fsd 2) hold the turn signal in the desired up or down position to initiate a lane change. 3) the Tesla begins to switch lanes, and will continue to further its lane change provided you continue to hold the turn signal (up/down). 4) if you release the turn signal input "early", that is prior to the Tesla determining that the new lane is the current lane, it will immediately begin reverting to the original lane that you attempted to leave. 5) it begins to over correct, requiring maybe 5 damped oscillations. Its very uncomfortable, and exposes a vehicle on the edge of control - the vehicle is not traveling neutrally on its suspension. To be clear, it is damped, but I don't see how it could be described as stable at highway speeds.

56 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 11/05/2024

My front right suspension linkage under the vehicle has come loose and drags on the tarmac. The problem is the suspension linkage is held on by what appears to be two bolts. The two bolts have backed out, causing this linkage to fail.

57 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 11/04/2024

I noticed a clicking sound when turning my steering wheel at low speeds such as when parking around September 2024. The sound got louder with time. A few months later after getting new tires installed (October 22, 2024)I had very bad vibration at high speeds that was not resolved with multiple tire balances at different tire shops. Requested service with the dealer. My initial first available service appointment was December 20th 2024. I messaged the service center expressing concern that my car was unsafe to drive. They allowed me to bring my car in to drive with a technician and they ended up replacing the front lateral links on November 7, 2024. My car was purchased new in June 2024 and is at 22,000 miles. The parts were replaced under warranty. There were no warning lamps or other symptoms.

58 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 11/02/2024

Two days ago, as I was turning left into my neighborhood, I suddenly lost control of my car's steering. Just as I started the turn, the steering wheel unexpectedly pulled to the right, causing my car to veer off course and head straight toward the curb. Despite trying to correct it, the steering wouldn't respond, and the car collided with the curb. The impact was substantial, and the vehicle continued dragging along the curb until I was able to bring it to a complete stop. Upon inspection, I found that the passenger-side front wheel had been severely damaged, appearing crushed and warped from the impact. When I looked under the car, I noticed that the control arm was visibly damaged. It seemed bent or possibly broken, which I suspect contributed to my sudden loss of control over the steering. This experience has been unsettling, especially since the control arm is a critical part of the steering and suspension system. Afterward, I started researching similar incidents and found many posts and articles discussing similar cases. It seems that control arm damage or failure is not uncommon, particularly in situations involving rough terrain, curbs, or sudden impacts. Some articles also discuss the importance of regular inspections and the potential risks of worn-out control arms. I came across one particular article that sheds more light on these types of steering and suspension failures. [xxx] [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. 59 Steering problem of the 2021 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 10/20/2024

I was driving into a parking lot and heard a loud bang. I get out of my car and see that the metal that connects the tire to the car came down and screws came out. It is not drivable. I know this is not something normal and shouldn't happen. This is very dangerous and I am grateful I wasn't on the freeway when it happened. I was not involved in any collision and I did not hit anything. This simply happened on its own.

60 Steering problem of the 2024 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 10/17/2024

With beta self driving engaged, I turned south on [xxx] intending to turn west on [xxx]. At [xxx], there are 2 right turn lanes. I approached the intersection turning from the left lane. Rather than turn right, the car continued straight. I was able to manually override the system and luckily brought the car under control; otherwise, I am sure I would have ended up in a very bad spot. Later the same day beta did not recognize a turn lane into my community but rather proceeded straight. I have since disabled the beta fsd. I am responding to today's cnn article of your pending investigation. I cannot respond to your other questions above. Thank you! information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

61 Steering problem of the 2020 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 10/10/2024

I own a 2020 Tesla y with hardware version 3 and after a few weeks of a free trial, purchased Tesla's full self-driving software (fsd) version 12. 3. 6. Since then, the fsd software was updated to version 12. 5. 4 and then 12. 5. 4. 1. Fsd version 12. 3. 6 had some safety issues. But version 12. 5. 4 and 12. 5. 4. 1 has had more issues that have resulted in nearly having accidents that I have had to suddenly avoid. Fsd version 12. 3. 6 issues: 1. Wandering outside of center yellow dividing stripes when on a curvy two-lane roadway 2. Failing to yield to oncoming traffic when making a left turn and oncoming traffic was not clearly in view due to a curvy two-lane road 3. Attempting to make a left turn into a busy intersection when the turn signal was still red fsd version 12. 5. 4 and 12. 5. 4. 1 additional issues: 1. Attempting to enter a two-lane roadway from a stop sign, when the perpendicular traffic was active and they had no stop sign, requiring me to slam on the brakes. 2. Sudden and erratic braking on a two-lane roadway, including directly under a signal, when no objects, people or other vehicles were in front of me, which nearly resulted in the vehicle behind me hitting me in the rear 3. Software sending a tone and screen alert to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to a "system failure. " 4. Software sending a tone and screen alert that to grab the steering wheel immediately, due to "one or more cameras blocked," when no cameras were blocked.

62 Steering problem of the 2021 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 10/10/2024

The bushing spontaneously separated from the axle/wheel making the car unsafe and undriveable. I cannot believe I am the only one. This needs to be investigated and the car needs to be recalled.

63 Steering problem of the 2021 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 09/29/2024

When driving on highways the car will jerk the steering wheel and cause the car to turn when the car is in the center of the lane. This causes the driver to counter the force from the steering wheel to keep the car on the road. This only happens when autopilot and full self driving are not being used. I have taken it to the service center twice. The first time they said it was an issue with the car alignment so they realigned the tires and the second time they said it was a problem with the car’s computer so they replaced the computer. This continues to happen and is dangerous. Sometimes it will give a lane departure warning while other times there are no warnings.

64 Steering problem of the 2020 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 09/26/2024

After being parked on a suburban street for about 3 hours, our Tesla Model Y experienced a complete loss of power-steering assist, requiring extreme hand-over-hand effort to turn the wheel and making it dangerous to drive. Warnings of "steering assist reduced" and "lane departure avoidance features unavailable" appeared on the display. After a 3-week wait, we finally got the vehicle to Tesla service, who diagnosed the issue and claimed that it was due to ". . . Rodent damage to steering rack harness". They claim to have repaired the damage and the vehicle is again usable. Repair bill was $990. I have the vehicle and it is available for inspection. I cannot verify cause of the issue nor the repairs as they are not visible without a partial disassembly of the vehicle. No parts were returned to me (as I requested), so I must assume that none were actually replaced.

65 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 09/12/2024

I found that two bolts that connect the front right suspension assembly to the body of the car were loose (actually one had completely come off). On 9/12 I heard a rather loud clanging sound when I accelerated. When I arrived home I looked under the car, saw those loose bolts, and took the two pictures that I attached, which were taken from in front of the behind the front right wheel. We bought this car new from Tesla, and received it in late August 2023. We would expect that those bolts were not properly tightened when the car was assembled at the factory, since servicing done afterwards should not have affected them. This is the list of servicing that was done after we received the car, and before 9/- Tesla service fixed some rattling sounds that we heard inside the car by adjusting the interior trim, and by fixing something in the brake pedal that was making some rattling sound sometime (replaced the brake pin, insulate the braked pedal and lubricated the brake pin) - a body shop replaced the side mirror on the left side (I. E. Opposite side of the bolts that had come off), which had been hit by another car - a tire shop fixed a hole in a tire and rotated the tires.

66 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 09/09/2024

Date of incident 9/9/24 11:15 am 2023 Tesla Model Y traveling north bound I-15 using Tesla autopilot intending soon to exit pioneer crossing / american fork ut in the far right lane — vehicle made sudden move to right glancing off wall causing scraping damage to right front quarter panel, and hub cap. Although I stepped on the brake in attempt to take control of the vehicle I immediately experienced uncontrolled acceleration and difficulting in steering. I chose not to exit and fought to keep the vehicle in varying freeway lanes attempting to brake to which the vehicle continued to attempt to accelerate against the braking, I also simultaneously and frantically continued to push the right stalk upwards in attempt to disengage autopilot assuming that was causing the unintended acceleration. I was fighting to keep the car in a lane with faulty steering at time awakwardly steering to avoid slower moving vehicles. I eventually ended up coming to a complete stop in the middle lane of I-15 north bound 9/10ths (nine tenths) of mile north of my intended exit (mile post #278 pioneer crossing). Because of faulty controls I was afraid to try to move the vehicle to the side — I immediately put on emergency flashing lights and called 911 on my cell phone. While nervously waiting for emergency services approaching vehicles slowed and made their way around me — per instruction I stayed in my vehicle with seatbelt on. One large pickup truck struck my vehicle driverside rear as he passed by and failed to stop. Utah highway patrol and fire department ambulance arrived within approximatley ten minutes. Two highway patrol officers stopped traffic and assisted in me slowing driving my vehicle to the center emergency lane. One office stayed with me until tow. He commented the right rear wheel appeared not aligned correctly suggested the rear axle was possibly broken. I was not injured beyond being extremely frightened. No passengers.

67 Steering problem of the 2020 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 09/09/2024

While driving on the freeway was unable to steer. It has happens multiple times. Once on the freeway while I was trying to exit, I suddenly couldn’t steer. Another time, I was merging when again I could not move the steering wheel. The third time was when I was in the middle of making a left turn. All these situations were incredibly dangerous.

68 Steering problem of the 2021 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 09/08/2024

My husband was driving the used Tesla we recently purchased from the Tesla dealership. We were driving on the highway with regular traffic and no issues around us. Autopilot was not on (we have never employed this feature). All the sudden, the car quickly jerked to the right on its own and then swerved back on its own. We were driving towards the sun so maybe the camera saw a shadow that wasn't actually there. We think either there is a steering issue or that the car might be reacting erroneously to something that isn't there. Just wanted to report this safety concern because I had my baby in the car and this could have caused a car accident.

69 Steering problem of the 2021 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 09/01/2024

Vehicle began making loud creaking noise audible at all speeds, loudest at low speeds. Car was maintained by Tesla dealership. Failure occurred at approximately 52,000 miles, just after 50,000 warranty expired. Diagnosed as failure of both control arms which need to be replaced at significant expense. Failure should not happen on such a low mileage and newer vehicle.

70 Steering problem of the 2023 Tesla Model Y

Failure Date: 08/31/2024

The control arm of my 2023 Model Y front wheel just came completely off without any incident. On August 31st at 9 pm, I was driving home from a park when I just pulled the car into my driveway, I heard a strange squeaky noise from the front wheel area, followed by a huge "bam ''. I started to turn my steering wheel, and by then, the vehicle felt "stuck'' as if something was preventing the car from moving. I came out of the vehicle and noticed the control arm had just fallen off and was dragging on the ground, I also saw two bolts on the ground so I scheduled a Tesla roadside assistance. The Tesla service told me to call a lift-wheel tow truck to tow my vehicle to a collision for repairs. The control arm defect is a known issue for Tesla.
