Tesla Model Y owners have reported 62 problems related to warning (under the lane departure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Tesla Model Y based on all problems reported for the Model Y.
I purchased my Tesla Model Y in January of this year. Tesla removed all ultrasonic sensors from the car, and is instead relying only on "Tesla vision". However, 9 months later and I still don't have several safety features Tesla promises. Rear cross traffic warning and blind spot warning don't work at all. The lane departure warning only works over the solid outside line, and doesn't warn at all when crossing between lanes (ie a dotted line). In addition, the adaptive cruise control randomly brakes dramatically for no apparent reason. This is extremely dangerous, as drivers behind don't expect you to quickly decelerate in the middle of the highway for no reason.

The power steering stopped working. "error ui_a020: steering assist reduced," and "error app_w264: lane departure avoidance features unavailable" appeared on the screen afterwards. I was driving home when suddenly I was unable to turn the steering wheel more than a quarter turn (even with all my weight and strength). I tried resetting my vehicle and the issue persisted. I also tried getting out of the vehicle, locking it and let it sit but the issue persisted when I got back in. Luckily, I had just entered my neighborhood and managed to get it parked in my driveway. After a couple hours of the vehicle sitting in my driveway, the issue stopped. I took the vehicle to the Tesla service center where it was inspected, they informed me this is a known issue with current firmware and an unknown future update will fix the issue.

While driving in the city on under construction road, the car started showing notifications that the steering power will be reduced. 30 sec. Later the steering wheel froze and the car was drivable only forward and backwards. This safety system malfunction put me and my family at risk while in active driving mode, luckily there was no much traffic and I was able to reset the car in order to be able to drive it again. Bumpy road shouldn’t cause the system to malfunction and limit the driving capability, especially not while active driving. I wasnt using any cruise control or auto pilot features.
Vehicle was parked on the street. Put car in drive, loud noise came from steering column, and warning message shows steering assist reduced and lane departure avoidance features unavailable and at that point the car had no power steering. Car was reset 4 times. Every time the vehicle was reset, loud noise came from steering column, both warning messages appeared, and no power steering. On 4th reset, power steering came back, but both warning messages still appeared.
The steering wheel on my 2023 Tesla Model Y, brand new with only 800 miles on it, kept on locking up out of nowhere, in the middle of the drive, and even on the highway, posing a major safety concern for me and everyone driving around me. My safety was put at risk since I could not steer my vehicle off the road and into a safe area, posing a risk-prone of a severe accident through rear-ending. The problem was notified to Tesla service, which responded super late to this incident where I had to call them and wait on hold for 1 hour to speak to a representative who then followed up and told me to drive it to the closest service center, which I declined since the steering wheel locking up at random is a major safety. Tesla stated that I would need a new steering rack installed on my brand new 2023 Model Y. I don't understand how these vehicles are inspected and pass quality control on such a major issue. This issue is not just about a broken part but a life or death situation and should be dealt which severely. I got multiple lights and messages when the failure occurred while driving, with steering assist required being the last notification which I have attached in the pictures.
Summary: loss of power steering/inability to steer the vehicle occurred twice (7/16/23 & 7/29/23). Issue appears consistent with investigation pe 23-014. Other functionality was also lost on each occurrence. Details: 7/16/23 - driver entered the car and immediately received several alerts including steering assist reduced, stability controlled disabled, traction control disabled, lane departure avoidance features unavailable, and vehicle hold disabled. Steering wheel could not be turned and regenerative braking was not functioning. A video of the issue was created and is available upon request as it could not be loaded in its current format. Tesla was contacted on 7/17/23. They stated that a firmware update failed on the evening of 7/15/23. The vehicle was towed to service center and firmware was updated. The invoice from the service center as also attached. 7/29/23 - driver entered the car and immediately received several alerts including steering assist reduced and lane departure avoidance features unavailable. The steering wheel could not be turned, but only with extreme force. There was no firmware update at this time. I was able to drive the car 3 miles to my home at very slow speeds. 2 videos of the issue were created and are available upon request as they could not be loaded in their current format. Tesla was contacted on 7/30/23. The vehicle was towed to service center where they determined that the steering rack needs to be replaced. The vehicle remains at the service center for repair. Background: car was just received on 6/30/2023. I have had other issues as well. Upon receipt, the electronic seat mechanism was not working and my cameras do not appear to be measuring distances properly.
Tesla advertises lane keeping assist, emergency lane departure assist etc. What happens is if you trigger this feature too many times during a drive the software disables this safety feature entirely. There are plenty of disclosures about not relying on the features etc. The issue I feel that warrants intervention from your departments is, how can a manufacture completely disable a safety feature just because a driver actually relied on said safety feature.

Tesla took my car in for service again, fixed nothing again. This time they messed up my dashcam even though it is clearly marked with bright red notice stickers on both sides of the car that consent for audio and video recording is given by entering vehicle that is owned by me (not a lease). Car wouldn't charge yesterday, then I do the newest software update and when I get 3 miles down the street from my house I yield for an ems emt with siren and lights on in the middle of the day with perfect visibility and big surprise the car doesn't even register that I've not only left the lanes without lane keeping assistance but it also doesnt see the emergency vehicle so I have disabled fsd and am refusing to use ap because this is a death trap. When I complained to the fbi about it they tried to have the local pd basically swat my house at 4am and wake up my whole family. My wife and I are both fbi witnesses. I also received a letter from the irs claiming they changed my taxes from 2020 (filed by my accountant) claiming that I owe $132,021 (on less than $800 in gains) by next month or they will charge me $20,000 a month interest. Today I received a notice from my insurance company of 1 year claiming they are canceling my coverage because I "drive uber black" which isn't true I never have because the orlando pd wouldn't approve me to because the insurance agent lied about the coverage because ana (moore resources insurance) and Mercury insurance; was too drunk on new years day and has caused me to lose $30,000+ in lost revenue because she ruined my 4 month wait for uber black approval which has completely destroyed my financial ability to provide for my family. I received a call from a dot agent a couple weeks ago from washington DC but the call was dropped so he called me back on a cell and we haven't been able to contact each other since. I am really in fear for my life. I am an fbi whistleblower and potus is retaliating against me and anyone who helps us. Sos send help!.

Made it less than a mile from my house this time when the Tesla couldn't see the fhp (florida highway patrol) with lights on and perfect visibility. The car was updated yesterday but it has never actually worked as advertised and the more I complain the more everywhere I go gets hacked. My wife red cross servers, hacked. My medical files, hacked. The pizza shop I was driving to, hacked, my grill, hacked, my alarm system, hacked. The lawn equipment store, hacked. My iphone, hacked. My Tesla, hacked. My insurance, hacked. My uber, hacked. My lyft, hacked. I am currently obtaining my security+ cybersecurity certification so I can keep my family alive. I am failing and being smothered! Tesla refuses to cooperate despite my countless attempts to be civil, involve the fbi, local sheriff, local pd, irs, cisa, my state attorney ashley moody and governor ron desantis and even the airforce with . Mil emails are having trouble contacting me/my family. I am a high profile witness that demands witness protection. I am a witness against peter theil, hunter biden, jeffrey epstein, jeffrey bezos, bill edwards, peter savage, elon musk, raymond jones, mark zuckerberg, twitter, instagram, facebook, local pd and sheriff offices, the doj, the fbi, the usda, uber, lyft and of course Tesla and many more. They want me and my family dead! they will stop at nothing! impeach impeach impeach! huge coverup! witness intimidation! violation of head of state! racketeering! I am not suicidal! I pose no harm to anyone! I applied to gs13 ts clearance under spaceforce dod was interviewed and told I was one of the final selections and ever since biden took office I have been in a hunger games type survival nightmare where I am continually hacked, poisoned, banned and left for dead. Not even your own dot agent has called me back in weeks. If you are being targeted like me then contact the cia and sokolove law for Tesla class action false advertising. All evidence on ig @aquaponics_guy fear for my lifesos.
The lane departure avoidance system fails to trigger consistently when crossing over the lane markings. In the rare instances when the system does trigger, neither of the 2 available modes: steering correction or alert, give a significant enough input to be made aware or correct the problem. Another issue is when the lane departure avoidance system is triggered for an extended amount of time (~10s-ish or more when driving near the lane markings), the system is completely disabled for the powercycle of the car. Thus, this system is not just unreliable and useless when it does work, but also completely disabled after driving near the edge of the road for a little while without any way to re-enable it. Tesla service responded that they won't fix or correct this problem. There are no system failure notices displayed by the car. Vehicle has not been inspect by manufacturer or other.
This year I was charged $650 to replace both upper control arms, lower suspension links that I now find out was a known quality problem with Tesla. No recalls were issued despite this being a safety concern for drivers since it affects steering. I read that Tesla told service employees to tell customers that they had "abused" their car and that was the reason for the failure. I drive on perfect roads and without any load in the car, so clearly I didn't abuse it. It began with a creaking sound when making a sharp turn or parking from steering or front suspension they replaced: replaced lh front upper control arm. Replaced rh front upper control arm. Replaced lh compliance lower front suspension link. Replaced rh aft lower front suspension link. Note: I tried two different browsers buy your site has a bug that won't allow uploads of documents, so I could not include the receipt. When one clicks on "upload files" the button disappears, and it won't let you upload.
On several occasions, my car will either I) slam on the brakes when in assisted driving for no reason, ii) start beeping for a lab departure when I have no even made the slightest move to switch lanes, iii) windows will roll back down when I try to roll them up (not sure if that’s related to the fsd issues). I paid an extra $15,000 for fsd and not only does it not work, but it seems to have created unsafe driving conditions in my car.
I was stopped at a light, and I as I continued my trip after the green. I had put the car in auto pilot. As I approached the curve there deer to my left that got my attention. The vehicle didn't follow the road, nor did it announce with any warnings, or lane assists that the vehicle was departing the lane. Impact was made into a broken guard rail. Guard rail impaled the vehcile from the left side into the cabin impacting my left leg causing serious injuries.
My Tesla Model Y reports that cameras are blocked or blinded nearly every trip. This happens day or night, and seems to be related to condensation in front of the camera. There is no other condensation in the vehicle; and there is nothing I can do to remedy this. I have brought it to the service center multiple times. On the last visit, the manager informed me that this is a known/common issue and that there is no current repair available. When this occurs, it either disables autopilot which can be alarming/distracting, or stops it from being enabled. Assumedly multiple safety features are disabled while the vehicle is in this state. I can provide additional documentation if required. The image supplied is from the last trip to the repair center.
"full self driving" without explanation stopped working while I was using it. I tried to park the car, walk away, lock it; I even rebooted the car by holding both scroll wheels on the steering wheel as I've been directed in the past. Nothing worked. I noticed during my shift that "auto pilot" still worked on the highway so I was using it for a couple miles successfully. Then when the time for the exit came the car took the exit normally but then when it switched to "fsd" the car stopped steering and drove me directly towards a drainage ditch next to the off ramp and all steering assist and lane keeping was turned off all at the same time (while traveling at 50mph on i4). I was really scared luckily I never took my hands off the wheel but anyone with lesser reaction time would have crashed and possibly died. I got this on dashcam, pulled over to calm down (mcdonalds near mco), then drove back to prove it happened with the iphone as Tesla has directed me to do on many occasions to "prove it". So I got it all on video you can see on this link here since NHTSA only allows low quality short videos less than 10mb like its the 1990's. The more I report Tesla and tell my riders about the child slaves in the congo mining the cobalt in the batteries the more frequently the car tries to kill me. This is a cover up not a coincidence. . When I purchased this vehicle, I was told that all adas features would be available once the cameras calibrated (approximately 50 miles). After 100 miles my wife bumped into a wall in our garage. I opened a ticket and Tesla said the adas features are unavailable until a software update is sent. The sales person who I spoke to were not aware of this. This is extremely dangerous. Drivers are reliant on warnings from features like this and to have the features off without a warning could get someone run over.
11/29/vehicle begins to flash warning alerts (e. G. , traction control disabled, lane departure warning unavailable), then power steering stopped working, and brakes pulsed violently when used (almost like abs was active). Software update was available shortly thereafter, assumed this would remedy the situation. 12/5/same problems recur (loss of power steering, odd braking behavior, vehicle alerts). Vehicle was towed to Tesla for service. Tesla was able to id the alerts in the vehicle history but could not identify the root cause. Took the vehicle one extended test drives, but was unable to cause the problems to recur. Tesla is unable to identify any further actions to prevent recurrence.
The lane departure warning goes off frequently and at random times when there is no issue with it at all. The windows are constantly malfunctioning and turning down when there is nothing obstructing the path of the window. The tail lights will go out at random times and will only be notified by other drivers particularly at night making the vehicle unsafe to operate and unreliable.
Several instances of emergency braking applied without warning or obvious need during multiple driving sessions. This results in an unexpected rapid vehicle deceleration. Fortunately no other vehicle was following close enough to represent an imminent safety hazard though it is easily plausible this could happen. Typically the issue occurs when traveling uphill or around a bend and encountering traffic in an oncoming lane, structures (bridges) or dark shadows. The unexpected emergency braking has also happened when adaptive cruise control or autopilot is engaged while overtaking large vehicles on the left (tractor trailers in the right lane). I have also noticed several erroneous lane departure warnings despite turning off these notifications on the dashboard. They are more a nuisance than safety hazard so far but would like to completely silence them entirely. These issues have yet to be reproduced or inspected by the dealer, police, insurance or other investigator. No warning lamps or indicators were active at the time the braking or lane departure warnings were observed.
Recently, I had a long distance trip and and Tesla Model Y braked the vehicle at highway speed when it was on advanced cruise control 3 or 4 times with obvious reasons. I had to push the acceralator pedal to speed up in order to avoid rear ended collision in a bumper to bumper traffic.
Currently and noticing other reporting the inaccurate location of the gps in the car. At times the car gpe will drift into areas not associated with the cars correct location. If the car is in adaptive cruse or Teslas autopilot the car will maintain the posted speed limit for that gps location or a delta of the users defined (+ - 10 or 15 mph). This cause a car to abruptly reduce the speed if not within the posted speed limit for that area. For example a car in autopilot or adaptive cruse going 70mph on the highway, the gps will start drifting into areas outside of you location and abruptly reduce the speed to assumed location. This is even more troublesome if autopilot is engaged where the car will try to change lanes as directed by the gps.
Four times in the last six weeks (three while driving) the car has lost all power. My screen either freezes or goes completely black so I have no speedometer, the blinkers do not work, I cannot control the windows or open the doors without the manual override. This usually lasts for 3-5 minutes, sometimes longer - and then the computer resets and everything reloads. Tesla is telling me it is a known issue and I have to wait until they figure out the firmware issue and get the next update. They were not at all concerned about the safety of the car and gave me no suggestions on how to continue to drive safely. The date entered below is the most recent occurrence.
The vehicle driver assist system frequently has phantom braking in situations it should not be, especially when there are vehicles behind putting us at risk for a collision due to unexpected braking behavior of the car. This happens especially in setting of 2 lane roads with oncoming traffic, and guaranteed with a truck in the vicinity. On major highways it is less so, but does still happen occasionally. On local roads even if straight and no obstruction the automatic braking without notice occurs when least expecting. Also the lane departure system disables automatically for the remainder of a drive if you veer off a lane even once and didn't take the corrective action the vehicle thinks should have happened. That's not how a safety feature should work. . . It should remain on regardless. As much as I do enjoy this car, these quality issues definitely make you second guess and keep a closer eye on how you drive to avoid accidents if the system decides to not work as advertised.
Vehicle constantly experience phantom braking. Will randomly brake for shadows, vehicles in the opposing lane, and when it feels like it. Chance for rear collision is higher due to autopilot.
On Monday November 22 at around 6:15 pm cst, I was driving my Model Y and had Tesla's full self driving beta software engaged. A right banked curve on a two lane road in a rural area came up with a vehicle coming around the curve the opposite direction. The Model Y slowed slightly and began making the turn properly and without cause for concern. Suddenly, about 40% of the way through the turn, the Model Y straightened the wheel and crossed over the center line into the direct path of the oncoming vehicle. I reacted as quickly as I could, trying to pull the vehicle back into the lane. I really did not have a lot of time to react, so chose to override fsd by turning the steering wheel since my hands were already on the wheel and I felt this would be the fastest way to avoid a front overlap collision with the oncoming vehicle. When I attempted to pull the vehicle back into my lane, I lost control and skidded off into a ditch and through the woods, causing significant damage to the vehicle. I was able to retrieve the dashcam footage of this incident and it is attached here. I did analyze the footage myself briefly. You can see the vehicle leave the lane, and within about 10 frames, I had already begun pulling back into the lane before losing control and skidding off the road. Since this video is recorded at about 36 fps, this would mean I reacted within 360ms of the lane departure. I understand it is my responsibility to pay attention and maintain control of the vehicle, which I agreed to when I enrolled in fsd beta. I was paying attention, but human reaction does not get much faster than this and I am not sure how I could have otherwise avoided this incident. I am thankful this was the outcome rather than a front overlap collision with the oncoming vehicle, which would have likely resulted in bodily injury. Tesla has confirmed that fsd beta was engaged, per the attached correspondence, but insists that this incident and the resulting accident are my responsibility.
Vehicle made a sudden right turn when it was on auto pilot and because of that there are minor cosmetic damages to wheel and tire. Manufacturer doesn't accept any fault when it was humanly impossible to control the vehicle because of sudden turn.
My car is a 2020 Model Y, delivered on June 27, 2020. This fall, I've had an issue crop up that looks like it's been addressed in the past (at least for models s, x and 3 before March 31, 2019). The problem is that on several occasions (specifically on 11/26/20) while driving on city streets and with humid and cool weather (here in iowa) I've had a report on my display indicating that the b pillar camera is obscured. This, of course, would disable auto drive (including auto lane change) but I'm also concerned that this blind spot may mean that lane change protection during traffic aware cruise control (I. E. * auto drive) will not work, or not be very effective, either. The only formal reference I can locate for this problem is service bulletin sb-20-12-002 but the remedy proposed there has apparently been implemented on all production vehicles starting on March 31, 2019. Well, that solution for this design defect clearly does not work. On November 26, 2020 (the date of the first occurrence of this issue on my Model Y), I requested a service appointment. This was based on the seriousness of the problem given the display warning I received which requested that I stop the vehicle and clear the obscuration immediately. Upon stopping, a glance at the b pillar camera location showed that the issue was one of condensation on the inside of the protective glass over the camera (see attached). From online forums, it's clear that I'm far from alone in having this issue. My service appointment date was originally set for December 17, 2020 but has been canceled as of today. The service center handling my requests is saying that this is "normal" operation of the vehicle and, while the camera may be operating as designed, I disagree that it should be working this way since it removes blind spot awareness from the vehicle's software system and the occurrence is random.
