2 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/01/2020

2005 Toyota 4runner been plagued with frame rust issues and recently a stabilizer bracket broke when going over a small bump. Upon investigation, the frame is rusted completely through in that area and numerous other areas. Thankfully my son was not traveling at a high rate of speed because it was uncontrollable. Very dangerous situation, my son could have been killed! why is Toyota handling frame rust issues with other models like tacoma but not the 4runner?.

4 Carrier/rack problem of the 2019 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/20/2020

With under 12,000 miles on my brand new vehicle, I have had to replace the whole windshield 4 times now. Each crack/chip has occurred with vehicles going in the opposite direction on a two lane highway. We have continued to call the dealership (where we purchased the vehicle) and Toyota's headquarters about the issue of the brittle/delicate windshield on the 2019 4runner. I have researched forums to see if other consumers were having this problem with a lot of concurring about the thin windshield. I hope that Toyota can possibly come out with another windshield (preferably more durable) option for the ones who use the 4runner on rural roads.

6 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 12/03/2019

The frame is so rusted everywhere that it is unsafe to drive. One huge hole is completely broken through both sides of the frame and the bottom plate has cracked through. I have a highly reputable welding shop set to repair and patch this but I feel Toyota needs to take care of this before it costs me everything.

7 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/29/2019

Hi, I am writing this letter in regards to the potential recall of the Toyota 4runner rotting frames. I purchased a beautiful 2006 Toyota 4runner sport in oct of 2018 this SUV had less than 130,000 miles, the body and interior are in immaculate condition I loved it. Then a few weeks later I take it to a shop to have the sway bar bushings done and find out from that shop that the frame is overly rusted they stated Toyota has a recall on rusted frames and tells me to go to a Toyota service center and look into it, so I did the following day and they told me they recalled the tundra, sequoia and the tacoma but haven't recalled the 4runner the Toyota service advisor told me that he had a flood of 4runner owners bringing their suvs to be inspected and some were so severe and the 4runners should have been included he recommended that we undercoat it until a recall happens, so my husband takes it and spends about 250. 00 and undercoats the whole underneath. Now it has been a year of ownership and we brought our 4runner to a shop to have some shock and strut work done and they informed me that the frame is overly rusted again and the undercoat has worn off and now there are severe cracks in the front and the rear of our frame, I am totally sickened and afraid to drive this now. Before buying this 4runner I did research and was looking for a top rated SUV that was reliable and safe in an accident and the 4runner was there now look what I have a very unsafe car not only for me but also my family and to other families that are out on the road. I purchased this SUV for 8,700. 00 using up years of money saved and now im finding out that I will need to bring it into a frame shop for either welding and or possible frame replacement.

10 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/17/2019

I was driving home on a suburban road going about 25 mph and took a corner which felt like I had hit snow or ice, however conditions were optimal. The fishtailing continued and I parked my car as it did not feel safe to drive. When the mechanic looked at it he said I could have been in a serious accident and possibly a roll had I taken it on the highway. The frame was cracked. We also had already replaced the suspension on this vehicle, and the exhaust fell off on the highway the year prior due to rust. The underbody of the car is excessively rusted.

11 Carrier/rack problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

17 Carrier/rack problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

My 2003 Toyota 4runner only has 79,000 miles on it and the frame has prematurely rusted with large holes throughout. The coupling between the steering shaft and the rack and pinion is completely rotted. The steering shaft was almost completely rusted through causing faulty steering. My mechanic has deemed the car unsafe to drive.

18 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/22/2018

The frame rusted through at the connecting point of the rear passenger side trailing arm. Much of the frame in this area is severely rotted by rust. I noticed that the vehicle was not tracking down the road very well, which was abnormal. Upon returning home I found the problem of the rusted frame.

19 Carrier/rack problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

21 Carrier/rack problem of the 2001 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/15/2018

The frame on my 2001 rotted very quickly from the inside out. It is the same exact frame used on the tacoma (which was recalled) and on the 2002 4runner, which is currently under investigation. If I didn't get the necessary frame repairs it easily could have cracked in half when on the road. The main areas of rot are located at the rear control arm (which I had professionally repaired), and up front near the suspension and axle. My brothers 1997 4runner axle and suspension completely fell apart when he was driving on the road. He was lucky to not be on the highway. Someone definitely needs to look into this issue. I purchased the vehicle from the south four years ago (2014) with a spotless rock hard frame. Four years later the rear control arm areas mentioned above completely rotted through. This should not happen! I love my 4runner, but I can't believe how these truck frames weren't recalled along with the tacoma frames. It is the same exact frame. . .

22 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/08/2018

Frame rusted leading to failure of sway bar brackets causing steering to become unstable. This occurred while driving straight down a highway. The repair estimate is total frame replacement.

23 Carrier/rack problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/05/2018

Brought vehicle to repair shop for muffler and tailpipe inspection. Repair shop found frame cracked and rusted along with steering shaft broken. Repair shop indicated that there is no recall on 4runners yet this is a known problem with the 2005 4runner. Repair shop stated it would cost $6000. 00 for new frame from Toyota dealer. Hartford Toyota superstore has done oil changes on this vehicle since purchase yet has never brought the frame problem to our attention.

24 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/01/2018

The frame of my 4runner is excessively rusted and corroded. It is flaking off in big pieces from the outside of the frame as well as the inside of the frame. In a couple of locations, it has corroded so much that there is a 1. 5" diameter hole in the frame. Other areas that are very important structurally and for suspension, has severe rust and I'm worried that those areas will crack and cause me to lose control while driving.

25 Carrier/rack problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Was there a recall or warranty enhancement on 4runners with cracked dashboards??? my mother owns a 2004 4runner (VIN #jtezt14r640014208) and we just learned that there was a warranty enhancement/recall that covered the replacement of this item however, she never received any notification in the mail advising of such.

26 Carrier/rack problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Upon pre-inspection of my personal vehicle for purchase I found that both rear corners of the frame were totally rotted out. Upon further inspection, after removal of the rear bumper, it turned out that the rust extended almost entirely through the corners of the frame. There was also a major hole in the frame where the factory welds were conjoining pieces of the frame right where the exhaust bracket mounts to the right hand side of the interior facing of the frame. On the front end of the vehicle there was a massive rust hole extending along the right front factory welds connecting the right front body mount to the frame. The rear rotted corners of the frame underneath the bumper and right front body mount were repaired at my father's automotive service station by my dad who has more than 50 years of experience. With a vermont state inspection license it was concerning to him to see the rotting and rusting centralized around the factory welds, and occurring where the body of the vehicle is mounted to the frame and the rear bumper is preventing serious injury from impact due to a potential collision.

27 Carrier/rack problem of the 2008 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/26/2018

My frame brackets that hold my suspension and other parts like my fuel tank and driveline are rusting off and my mechanic says don't bother because it'll cost more than the truck is worth. It needs a full frame change!! if I would have been driving it when the last part broke at highway speed instead of the 20 mph on a regular road we wouldn't be chatting right now because I would have been killed along with my passenger and I had just got out of a 3 day stay at a local hospital so I was definitely going slower than normal. It was my complete drivers rear spring perch and track bar off the axle and the frame side is just as bad. I'm worried one day something is going to break off at highway speed and if I don't get hurt I'll hit someone else or worse. I've enclosed 5 out of 42 photo's of the rust its serious and I need help along with lots of other 4th gen Toyota 4runner owners that will sooner or later get injured or kill someone due to the serious failures of our vehicle frames rusting. I went looking to replace the brackets and they don't sell them separately I was told I need the frame it's the only way to get what I need. So can you help me and all the other owners going through this please! we were left out of the big frame recall Toyota did because there are more 4runners that all the other 3 combined and it's very sad this happened!! the vehicle was towed to (mild to wild) 217 derby Ave / orange, CT to get the parts needed fabricated from scratch because you can't buy them separately you need to buy the whole frame!.

29 Carrier/rack problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

Dashboard cracking next stage is melting which will cause glare on windshield reducing visibility.

30 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/28/2017

Vehicle frame is rusting faster than normal. Have had to replace many suspension parts, welded front alignment tabs to keep vehicle in line, replaced vehicle suspension but unsure how long this will last due to frame still flaking. Toyota dealer states that the rust is severe and when I had my rear upper control arms replaced, stated that the mount bracket was very thin and causing movement in the rear of my vehicle.

31 Carrier/rack problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/21/2017

Frame has holes and cracks caused by excessive rust. One cross member is non functional. Has rusted through entirely. I called Toyota's customer care 800 number. Was told the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty has expired. I am the original owner and the vehicle has always been garage kept. The body is in perfect condition. It has only 104,000 miles. Collision repair shop looked at the frame yesterday and I was told it is a safety issue.

32 Carrier/rack problem of the 1997 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/12/2017

Right rear upper shock mount rusted out and shock broke through frame while driving on a city street (bracket sub assembly rear - right rear). Had to remove shock so it would not bust through causing ride instability.

33 Carrier/rack problem of the 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/15/2017

The mounting point for the rear-axel stabilizer bar rusted through and separated from the frame. On my drive to work (on the highway) noticed a knocking sound when down-shifting, and the rear of the vehicle swayed badly whenever I would brake or hit a bump. When I got to work and looked under the vehicle the rear bracket had broken away from the frame. The vehicle has 155,000 miles and has very little indications of rust, but upon closer inspection the inside of the box frame along the gas tank is rusted very badly. The vehicle is single owner and has been maintained with great care, so I am extremely disappointed to find out the frame is rusting out from under the car. Not to mention the way in which this failed at the attach point for the rear axel is a severe safety concern. My wife drives this car with my kids in it! from the number of complaints on this site, and pictures online, Toyota should be doing something to inform 4runner owners of this significant safety risk. When I visited the Toyota dealer there were racks and racks of tundra frames that were being replaced (see pictures). What is Toyota doing for 4runner owners?.

34 Carrier/rack problem of the 1996 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/08/2017

Takata recall I'm super disappointed in the rust problem with Toyotas, I've owned now three tacomas, all rusted out, I recently gave up and tried buying a 1996 4runner, got a really good deal on it, I can see why anyways I bought it and it turns out the whole frame was coated so I couldn't see rust, with further inspection there's a big crack in the frame from rust, and the whole frame is rusted. The crack is right beside the exhaust, I contacted Toyota and they said bring it in for inspection and they said it would need replaced, but would cost 14-16 thousand dollars. Then they charged me for the inspection 60 dollars, when they didn't even tell me I'd be charged. Toyota really needs to step up!!! feel free to call me at 4237904381.

35 Carrier/rack problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/01/2017

My 2006 Toyota 4runner limited has excessive rust corrosion throughout the undercarriage of the vehicle including but not limited to the frame, suspension, brakes, wheels, exhaust system and bolts/bracing. Since purchasing the vehicle, I have had to replace both front axles due to excessive rust at the recommendation of both the dealership and a third party mechanic. While driving, the skid plate detached from underneath the vehicle and was dragging beneath the car after the metal on the plate rusted out around the bolts. Similarly, the heat shield detached while driving on the highway after the bolts rusted out. When I replaced the front brakes (pads & discs), I was forced to purchase brand new calipers because the current calipers were so rusted and seized and the mechanic could not reattach them. I have continued to use Toyota dealerships for scheduled maintenance and the consensus has been as follows: sell the 4runner because it is excessively rusted would be a money pit to repair. Currently, the dealership has recommended I replace the steering rack and pinion due to leaks caused by rust. Moreover, the vehicle has duel exhaust leaks in both exhaust manifolds due to excessive rust. On multiple occasions the dealership told me they could not perform the work because of excessive rust. It has cost me thousands to repair and maintain, all of which is a result of extensive rust. The suspension and frame, including the shocks, struts, and bolts are excessively rusted and I have been urged to repair or sell the vehicle by multiple mechanics and dealerships, though the cost to do so would far exceed the cost of the vehicle. All of the aforementioned is detailed in paperwork from the dealership and supplemented by paperwork from third party mechanics here in san diego. The vehicle has 90k miles on it and has followed scheduled maintenance meticulously.
