1 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/01/2020

Multiple times now while driving under normal conditions we have experienced the instrument panel going rogue. Abs, vsc, gas, check engine, all lights will randomly come on. The scary part is this most recent time it jumped the speedometer way up as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated!.

2 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2020 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/17/2020

The 4runner struck a vehicle that ran a red light. The 4runner was at approximately 35 miles per hour and struck the other vehicle, a Nissan altima side on with enough force to propel that vehicle two lanes into another vehicle. The airbags failed to deploy on the 4runner but did deploy on the altima. The roads were drive and visibility was clear. Injuries to the 4runner driver included: head from contact with grab bar above drivers door, neck, back, wrists, fingers and arms. Altima driver had to be removed by paramedics and rushed to the hospital. Investigation of the vehicle computer showed the vehicle was unknowingly sold to me with errors in the multi-terrain, esc and pre-collision system. Vehicle was purchased in November of 2019. See attached photos for verification.

3 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/05/2020

The wiring harness to the rear abs wheel sensor fails. This must be a common problem as many people have been looking for this part. A warning light appears on the dash, it also prevents the vehicle from being put into gear. You have to use the override switch to put it into gear.

4 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/11/2020

While driving my abs, break, vsc trac and vsc off light came on solid. It was all accompanied by an alarm. I was in heading down a hill in the snow. Right after the alerts came on I had a hard break pedal with no movement and no breaks. I was not able to use the emergency break as in snow that would not have helped. I have done some research and this has happened to multiple people online and its concerning that if abs stops/faults you lose all ability to break at all.

5 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2018 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

My iphone 11 pro max constantly makes the system reboot (every 30 seconds or so) when trying to connect to the handsfree bluetooth audio and phone feature of the vehicle. It happens when the car is parked and in motion, and makes driving more hazardous by not allowing us any handsfree option to stay within the laws on cellular devices nationwide.

6 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2012 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 09/18/2019

Approximately 7:45 am on 9/18/19, my son while coming home from work, had an accident. I was not with him at the time. When he showed up at home after the incident, he explained how he was unable to stop the vehicle before it collided with the vehicle in front. He articulated that when he applied the brakes, it was as if he vehicle sped up. Remembering years back during a presidential campaign, this was an issue with some other Toyota's. The verdict was the place mats interfered with the pedals. When I released the vehicle from the tow lot, I checked and this was not the case as the floor mat was secure. I have driven Toyota vehicles since the early ninety's and have owned five. Checking for recalls as a result of this I found multiple incidents on record. The panic braking system surprised me the first time I experienced it. Low speeds (25mph or less) I thought a true asset but because of the quick stopping, higher speeds worried me. Never needed the panic brake but once. Some how, I believe the communication (ai) with the panic, anti-lock, braking system, and the way it communicates speed and conditions is the culprit. The insurance company is in possession of the 4runner and I still have the title. Please contact me to advise how to proceed. They seem anxious to get the title but I am animate to know if conditions or vehicle defects played a part in the accident. When I mentioned this to the insurance company, they avoided the issue.

8 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2018 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/30/2019

Totaled vehicle repaired after vehicle reported totaled - vehicle not repaired adequately and is unsafe as a result of a hit and run accident. Incident reported to police - insurance company, towing service, and consumer fraud by network hacking insurance information.

9 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2016 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/06/2019

The vehicle was traveling approximately 55-60 mph (constant speed w/o acceleration) in 2wd in a 75 mph zone on hwy 29 southbound when the rear tires lost traction (w/o audible skidding) causing the vehicle to veer to the left into the left lane at an angle exceeding 40 degrees. The vehicle brakes weren't used and I removed my foot off of the accelerator during the incident while gently trying to correct the problem. The vehicle did not cause an accident or strike anything and traction was abruptly regained (w/o warning) before hitting the guard rail allowing the vehicle to regain control. The vehicle traction control system failed to activate when needed despite almost going sideways into the guard rail. The vehicle tires failed to operate in manner consistent for an all-terrain tire. The tires exceed 75% tread life with no imperfections found. Upon inspection after the incident and testing on a different road, 30-40% of the tread will remain snow packed even on clear roads due to driving on snow packed roads prior. This particle tread pattern design fails to have enough space between the tread groves to allow snow to clear. This tire should not allowed to be sold as an all-terrain tire and has a design flaw making it clearly unsafe to use in snow. During routine driving, the tires constantly fail to properly provide traction to the point where low speed turning into parking lots becomes a challenge for safe driving. The vehicle's traction control system clearly has a design flaw preventing activation during a scenario in which it is required to operate. The vehicle has (4) toyo open country a/t ii tires size p265/70r17, (10 32nds tread remaining). Outside conditions as follows: temp, 1 degree f, road conditions, clear, flat and no ice or snow accumulation, wind speed, 5-10 mph n to s and was hitting vehicle parallel to its traveling direction, location, north dakota.

10 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2005 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/12/2018

The Toyota secondary air system has failed rendering my car without traction control. . . And other lights. There is no preventative measures for this part and Toyota used the exact same system on the tundra's and sequoia's with the same problem I'm having. This needs to be addressed as the repair for the system is roughly 4000. 00 almost half the cost of my car. . . Please make them fix this on all cars where the same system was used.

11 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2011 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/10/2018

Carlos and george of kings of cars work (323) 213-3845 mobile +1 323-503-3983 home 5911 e. Olympic blvd los angeles , CA 90022 they sold me this car with odometer reading 84,000 miles around March 2018. . . After 2 weeks car was shaking and not turning properly, and steering wheel was bouncing when driving. . . Took it to my mechanic, they had me replace all 4 tires, realigned, balance and back brakes. 2 months later, problem reappeared and worst. Took it back to george, he got his mechanic do same thing again, plus replaces front bakes, 2 months later took it to Toyota for a air bag safety recall, while there I asked Toyota to look into this issue, Toyota found out from running their carfax report that this same vehicle was recorded several times at mechanics with last recorded mileage in 2017 of 194,000 miles, Toyota urged me to return car to george king car because more safety issues might be present since car having balancing issues and virring off the road. Car was returned onn8/18/2018, unfortunately george claimed no knowledge of issue and car will be dealt with. In January 2019 to may 2019 I received several parking tickets in places I have never been plus dmv sent me notice they were suspending license 6rru625 for not having insurance, car still in my name. George claimed to fix it but now I need you to go after him.

12 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 05/05/2018

I have a 2015 4runner (VIN: jtebu5jr5f5276737) I purchased brand new. It currently has less than 50k miles on it. A few weeks ago it started periodically going into limp mode while driving at highway speeds. My two toddlers were in the vehicle the first time this happened; I almost lost control since the tractional control disabled concurrently. I took the vehicle to multiple mechanics who confirmed the diagnostic code p2445 (secondary air injection pump). I was shocked to hear this because the vehicle is relatively new and exceptionally well maintained. I looked online and the failure of this component appears to be a systemic issue with Toyota 4runners and tacomas. The fact that this component failed aftera short duration in such a sudden and violent way is very dangerous. I submitted a formal complaint to Toyota and they denied knoweledge of this issues despite hundreds of folks reporting identical problems on their 4runners & tacomas. For a nominal fee per vehicle Toyota could fix this issue, which also has environmental implications, but instead they are being disengenous and denying this major systemic safety hazzard.

13 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/10/2018

On February 10, 2018, I was driving my 2004 4runner in a snowstorm in 4wd high when the check engine light suddenly came on and the stability control and traction control systems immediately shut down, causing the rear of the vehicle to start sliding and putting me on a collision course with oncoming traffic. I don't understand why Toyota designed its vehicles to shut off these critical safety features when the check engine light comes on. I suggest that Toyota be required to develop a software upgrade and voluntarily recall the affected vehicles to install the appropriate software fix. I wrote to Toyota on February 13, 2018 (see attachment) expressing my concern. Three and a half months later, I have yet to receive even a cursory response from Toyota. Therefore, I feel I must now notify NHTSA of my concerns.

14 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/01/2018

The vsc and trac off warning lights stay on al the time the engine is on. The vsc button does nothing.

15 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 10/19/2017

Abs, vsb trac on/off, and brake lights come on suddenly along with continuous high-pitched alert. Brakes eventually become difficult to work. Had towed to dealer, by the time dealer looked at, it wasn't happening and they could find nothing wrong. Picked up car, happened again on way home (both times making right hand turns). I am told this may be an electronic problem but regardless, to fix it, it will cost thousands of dollars ($4500 first quote) and requiring replacement of a number of parts/an entire assembly: brake booster/accumulator/master cylinder assembly. Besides the dangerous condition, don't understand why is built such that so much would have to be replaced and cost so much. Prior to this, seemed to have had more than usual problem with brakes, with multiple frozen calipers for example.

16 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 1996 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/25/2017

I was getting on the hiway ramp and was traveling 60pmh when my vehicle felt like it wanted to move over to the next lane while the steering wheel was held steady. I took the vehicle to northpark Toyota in san antonio texas on August 29,2017. Iwas told the parts were ordered and would take 2weeks to come in. I called 2weeks later and could not get any info on the parts ordered. Today is 10/16/2016 and still no info. I have been driving the vehicle little because it has wanted to move over to the next lane several times even though I hold the steering wheel straight.

17 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2015 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/03/2017

I had 20,000 miles and bought the veichle brand new and went to leave work and my veichle was struggling to stay going and my check engine light was flashining. When I'd go to reverse the vehicle would struggle and act like it was going to die. I had to go 20mph on the side roads about 15 miles to the dealer. The rpm shouldn't shift. It was caused by a mouse I guess? since they use soy base and see this a lot. So fustrating when you pay $38,000 for a veichle. I'd much rather drive my older 2010 Honda that never had an issue with so called a mouse. They of course wouldn't cover it. To top it off I had a major oil leak at 19,000 miles causing about $6,000 worth of damage. Which was the factory's fault they said. It was covered by warrenty, but still it's ridiculous. I bought the car new. With 1 mile on it, fresh off the truck. As of right now I have no faith in Toyota. I'm afraid my veichle will break down on me. Which I shouldn't have to feel when I buy a new car. So disappointed in Toyota. Something needs to be done.

18 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/20/2016

The contact owns a 2003 Toyota 4runner. While driving 65 mph, the vsc and traction control warning indicators illuminated. The anti-lock braking system engaged and locked the front brakes. The vehicle violently pulled to the left lane and the steering and brakes failed. The dealer was unable to duplicate the failure and repair the vehicle. The manufacturer stated that they were unaware of the failure previously occurring. The failure mileage was approximately 167,000.

19 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/05/2016

I've been doing research online for the non stop vcs trac, vcs off, abs and brake warning lights and buzzers going off. It has been described as a common issue with Toyota and can lead to complete loss of brakes, but no recall. The dealership wants $3200 for the part and $600 to install. I guess Toyota needs fatalities to back their product. Shame on Toyota.

22 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/22/2016

I have an ongoing problem with our 2004 Toyota 4runner. It started about 4 years ago when the maryland state emmission test facility plugged into my odbi2 port. All the dash lights were on and I went in to the office and complained. I filed a form with emissions. I work out of town, my wife is a teacher and we have two small kids. Going to the dealer was not an option until school was our. In the mean time the truck drove fine other than no four wheel drive and the tires spinning if you hit the peddle to hard (no traction control or stability control. Took the truck to the dealer over the summer and they had to reset the values for $110. 00 the four wheel drive would no longer engage. Toyota dealer said all the values being erased was a common problem with that year and mva cheep scanners. Maryland said they called Toyota and no one had ever had that problem. Have had this happen again last emission test. Biggest problem is that the 4 wheel drive no longer functions. The actuator doesn't engage the 4 wheel drive. This was apparent when my wife lost control and nearly flipped the trick over after picking up the kids in a snow storm. I climbed under the truck in the snow and pulled the cover off the actuator, pulled out the plastic gears and manually shifted it into 4 wheel drive to get it home. The four wheel drive system was always used at least every month until the emission test problems just to keep it lubericated. The 4 wheel drive or lack there of, could have caused death or serious injury to my wife and kids. This actuator is a serious problem, if they can't design a actuator that operates when you need four wheel drive, especially in an emergency than go back to the old stick and linkage. 55 people died in the blizzard of 2016 and there could have been 3 more just because of a design flaw! p. S. My wife and I bought it new, never off road!.

23 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 1999 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/11/2016

The gauge reading will gradually change while driving or will show a different reading after cycling the ignition key ¿off¿ and then ¿on¿. The gauge will come off of ¿full¿ quickly.

24 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/26/2015

Loss of coolant with no visible signs of leaking. Replaced so many things and keep getting misfires and vsc lights on constantly. Rough start up for about 30 seconds every time started. Slight over heating if idling . . . All points now lead to blown head gasket in which I read more and more and common with 04 v6s.

25 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2007 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/20/2015

My 2007 Toyota 4-runner has a serious drive shaft jolt and clunk that occurs whenever coming to a complete stop causing the vehicle to lurch. The first occurrence was at approximately 6500 miles in my six year. Toyota has been informed of this several times and refuses to take action. Approximately 3 weeks ago, the vehicle did this on the freeway at highway speed of approximately 60 mph causing the vehicle to lunge in heavy traffic. Toyota was again notified of this and refused to take action. Additionally my 4 runner is suddenly getting the "vsc trac" and "vsc off" lights in the dash and check engine lights, which according to Toyota own maintenance procedures procedure as described in TSB br001-04 to solve the "vsc trac" and "vsc off" lights and check engine lights, the 4 runner only requires the Toyota obdii tester which takes only about 5 minutes to do, for a simple calibration matter, of telling the 4runner vsc/trac computer "the yaw rate and deceleration rate are currently zero" and to save the associated values. Then the output from the sensors can be interpreted correctly. I have gone to three dealers and all want to charge me in excess of $600. 00. The last dealer contacted made me come in, and after 35 minutes bill me for basic oil change in amount of $74. 00, and said I should not worry about the lights which continue to show on the dash. Indeed this is rip off by both Toyota and its delerships.

26 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 07/07/2015

I was driving home at around 50 mph and had to brake and suddenly the vsc/abs brake dash indicator lights came on and a loud alarm started to sound. I did not hit anything, I just pressed the brake pedal and whole system went off. I was very close to the exit to a Toyota service center, a couple blocks away, so I drove very carefully to it and parked the car. When the service representative started the car again, the vsc, abs, brake dash indicator lights illuminated with the audible alarm once again. She also said the brakes were hard and that I should not drive it anywhere. Replacement of the system cost me around $3700, out of pocket. Since there was no accident or collision, my insurance company said they don't cover maintenance repairs. After checking if there had been a recall on this issue, which there wasn't and reading about other Toyota owners experiencing the same problems with the vsc/abs brake dash electronic system, I truly believe there should be a recall on the Toyota vehicles using this vsc/abs brake system. A faulty brake system is a very dangerous issue that needs to be addressed. My car has only around 60k miles on it and I am the original owner of this Toyota 4runner.

27 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/10/2015

Traction control light came on, check engine light came on and vehicle would move only slowly. Turned car off and on several times, tried engaging 4 wheel drive and other drive functions, tried accelerating, but vehicle would only move slowly. After turning off and on one more time the vehicle drove as normal but all the warning lights stayed on. This happened in a parking lot while going slowly. Mechanic has indicated that this resulted from a failure of the air injection pump and air valve, which apparently for some reason turns off traction control. This is a common enough problem on tundras and sequoias that there is an "extended warranty" offered on these vehicles. I do not know if the air injection pump and air valves on 4 runners are the same design or same model, but there are numerous complaints on the internet of the same problem for 4 runners as for tundras.

28 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2010 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 02/01/2015

Vehicle randomly and suddenly revs itself both from a stopped position and while driving. When driving downhill and I take my foot off the gas the vehicle will continue to rev itself around 3000 rpm then when I start to travel uphill it will down shift to about 1500 rpm. This seems backwards. Tapping brakes does not cause it to downshift as needed, does not seem right to apply brakes and vehicle continues to rev itself higher nor does it seem right to take foot completely off the gas pedal and the vehicle continues to rev up. The only way to get it to idle is to apply pressure to the gas pedal and speed up which is dangerous when already going downhill. When travelling in a parking lot it rev itself up and will jump forward. From a stopped position such as in my driveway or at a stoplight I will press the gas and it will not go into drive but it will rev up to about 3500. None of these issues can be duplicated by the dealership of course. At one point they finally changed out some type of component in shift mechanism and that worked for about a week then the problem started again. There is never a code indicating there is anything wrong although the trac light will randomly come on and not turn off. I have been driving for 30 years and know when a car is not driving properly. This is my 2d 4 runner. First was an '03 and had similar issues but since was less than a year old I finally convinced the dealership to replace the transmission at Toyotas cost. This one was purchased used and has more miles on it but it seems to be the same problems as my original. The only way I have been able to get dealership to believe me is to ask the service manager to drive my vehicle for several days then they are like OH I see what you mean. Another incident was on a snow packed road. Travelling 10mph when the vehicle downshifted I lost control.

29 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2003 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 11/21/2014

Lost all traction control causing spin off freeway.

30 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 08/09/2014

Driving on the interstate in north carolina vsc light turned on, tsc light turned on, abs light turned on, brake light turned on. Car was drivable for a short period of time then braking became extremely difficult. Limped home with my 3 year old in her car seat and luckily was able to do so without incident as given time of day and locaiton from home, very light traffic made travel possible. Several times though I contemplated stopping and calling a tow service. Took the car to the dealer, it's a $3000 part the abs module and $700 installation price.

31 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/30/2014

Suffered sudden, catastrophic failure of vsc/abs brake system while driving. Vsc, abs, brake dash indicator lights illuminated with an audible alarm. Vehicle operated normally for about 1 mile, then lost most braking control. Narrowly avoided collision with another vehicle due to having minimal brake system. Had to use evasive steering and emergency brake maneuvers to slow and stop vehicle. After researching this issue on auto repair blogs there seems to be a common issue with the vsc/abs system in most Toyota vehicles, especially camry's. Replacement of the defective part costs $3200 and Toyota refuses to acknowledge the problem or help pay for the repair since my vehicle is out of warranty. Catastrophic brake failure should not be tolerated by any manufacturer. Personally, I believe a recall is needed on all Toyota vehicles using the vsc/abs systems before more serious accidents, injuries or deaths occur.

32 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2001 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 06/04/2014

My 4 runner shakes while on freeway going passed speed limit of 50mph it feels like I can tip over if going to fast. Some of the electrical things work then not work. It is mostly the shaking back and forth. I have to hold firmly to get it under control somewhat. People notice it when driving behind me. I am scared for my children and I.

33 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 04/18/2014

Cel vscoff vsc trac. Had it checked, was told #6 cylinder plug or coil, replaced coil and all spark plugs . Cel light went off the next day but came back on following day. Noticed a sound of water moving in a pipe or what sounded like in a pipe behind dash for a second or so. Was idling and running rough while driving, engine was shaking. Went on some web sites read some comments from other owners ,bad head gasket. 4runner has been well taken care of never abused only 8 years old, normal miles I think, not very happy with this. Bad design of cylinder head. I own a 94 4by 4 pick up bought new 250,000 miles lot a original parts still on truck runs very well except for bad rot on chassis happy with truck was very good to me as was I to it. I also have a 01 tundra sr5 bought 2 years ago with 132,000 runs well, 02 sensor replaced pass. Front went well but now have to replace pass. Rear impossible since rot will not permit me to have to replace cat converter, noticed lots of rot on frame as well as other areas under truck. Have loved Toyotas till now only had good things to say about them, starting to have second thoughts.

34 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2013 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 03/28/2014

My 2013 Toyota 4runner ltd, on three different times this past month, activated its vsc/ abs system when I was turning on a winding road. I was traveling at or below the posted speed limit( 30 mph or less). This caused the vehicle to apply the abs to the outside front wheel which pulled me off the road or across the double yellow line into oncoming traffic. I had no control of the vehicle when the vcs/abs system activated. If not for the low speed the outcome would have been much worse. I notified Toyota service and have appointment to check same on 4-2-2014. . Read more...

35 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota 4Runner

Failure Date: 01/07/2014

Driving vehicle in frigid weather and engine service light went on, followed by vsc trac light and vsc off light going on. Went to service station they checked car and were able to turn off engine light. Took vehicle to empire Toyota in oneonta NY 1/18 and was told low battery caused problem. Diagnosis and battery change cost $202. 33. I/29 same 3 lights go on. Returned to dealer, told computer sensed a future possible problem with catalytic converter and car designed to disable vehicle stability control system (a personal safety system) because of a possible future exhaust emission problem. Price quoted on catalytic repair was $2,200. Repair offer declined, engine light reset - dealer refused to turn vsc system stating it couldn't be done unless cat. Was replaced; charger another $86. 40 for diagnosis of same problem. I have been forced to drive vehicle through ice & snow with this " vsc -safety feature" intentionally shut off. To date engine light has not gone pack on indicating to me there has been no cat problem, yet my safety has been intentionally compromised.
