Driving to coral gables at around 20 mph, all of sudden four lights comes on and loud beeping noise. Vsc, trac off, abs & brake lights on at the same time, brake peddle is hard and no brakes at all. I had to go into neutral try the emergency brake to try and stop and pull over, I had to tow my truck home, I call the Toyota dealer they told me they I need to replace the complete brake master cylinder assembly costing $2600. 00.

22dec12 49f entered corner at 50mph, roads slightly wet. 4runner decided the car was slipping and the panic beeps went off and the car applied brakes. Unfortunately the computer straightened the car out and pointed it off the road. It took all my strength to turn the car back into the corner and finally the computer stopped the panic. After this I was unable to turn off the traction control via the enable/disable button until I had turned off the vehicle. I was following a car into the corner and that car navigated the corner fine. Also, since owning this vehicle, 10 times it has assumed I was panic braking. Literally, the 4runner slams on the brakes and brings the vehicle to a stop. Luckily there has been no one behind me during these events. In the winter of 2011, the 4runner lost control on an icy road at fairly low speed. I couldn't do anything because the computer was trying to get control back. I suspect the computer got confused because I could have totally gotten control back. The traction control is never really off. You can turn it off, but it will kick back on when it thinks you are no longer in control of the vehicle.

I own a 1997 4runner. During my driving the vehicle few weeks ago, the chassis located on the rear passenger side split apart and almost resulted in a fatal accident with my family. This failure, however, is purely an engineering design and manufacturing failures. Hence, the vehicle has become un-drivable. When I contacted Toyota and its dealerships, they said to repair the vehicle will cost me $8,100. 00. Hence, I feel that, in comparison to other vehicles from different brand of cars companies, therewith, whereby, they are still on some part of the world, are still drivable and useful. However, for the kind of money spent on the purchase, the required maintenance, the vehicle is that old they are liable for a fifteen year old vehicle.

Driving on the highway going straight at 55 mph, with my foot on the accelerator only (with no loss of stability or control and no wet conditions), suddenly and simultaneously a beeping noise from the dashboard occurs along with the 4runner pulling real hard to the left. (almost as if I pulled the steering wheel abruptly to make a left turn. . . ). Also feels like brake is applied during all of this to the front left tire causing me to lose aceleration - regardless of having my foot on the accelerator. I took my car to the dealer a year ago when this happened and they said nothing was wrong. It happened again this morning and I took it to the Toyota dealer. Both instances nearly caused an accident.
2006 Toyota 4runner check engine light disables traction controll and vehicle stability controll when on. For instance the car needed a gas cap. So the check engine light came on as well as the traction control and vsc light. Icy conditions and having something such as this fail because of poor wiring could be very dangerous.

While driving the accelerator pedal gave out. Motor was stilling running. I opened the hood to rev the motor from the throttle itself and nothng happened. I turned the car off and restarted and it seemed to reset whatever was wrong . I began driving and shortly thereafter the same thng happened. I pressed the pedal all the way to the floor and was able to get some speed. The next day it did not happened. Days later in traffic it happened again. The car losses speed almost instantly. This is very dangerous. If I were not able to press the pedal all the way to the floor and get some speed the out some would not be good. I found out that the accelerator position sensor is faulty and is the reason for the instant lose of speed. In searching the internet I found that many, many people have this same issue. Toyota should recall this part. . . It is definitely a hazard!.

The vehicle stability control is much too sensitive. As a turn is taken at speed the vehicle electronics take over and change the trajectory. For example, if turning on a curve to the right, if it senses a tire rotation discrepancy it steers the vehicle into oncoming traffic. This is reproducible demonstrating that this is the way that it is designed and not an unusual occurrence. Changing tires helps somewhat but does not mitigate it entirely. I have brought the vehicle in many times to Toyota under warranty and nothing is found and nothing is done to improve it. Online help directly with Toyota likewise has not lead to any improvement. This is a safety issue for many reasons including directing the vehicle into traffic and it is very disconcerting to suddenly have the vehicle take control of the steering when negotiating a turn, particularly on narrow roads or sharp turns. I even had Toyota service advisor in the vehicle when it happened. This is an ongoing issue.
While driving uphill in the snow, the automatic stability control on my Toyota engaged with a beeping sound and a dashboard indicator light. Once this happened, several other lights illuminated on the dashboard and the vehicle began to accelerate up the hill. I attempted to brake, but the vehicle continued to gain speed and struck the back of a parked pickup truck on the side of the road. No airbag deployment occurred. The front end damage was significant, making the vehicle a total loss.

This complaint concerns the new 2010 Toyota 4runner. There is an issue with the braking system and handling for this vehicle. Upon depressing the brakes, the pedal travels a considerable distance sounds squeaky and notchy and delays in stopping. The anti-lock brakes do not interact quickly and often times engaged at the very end of the brake distance and creates a very uncomfortable and unsettling feeling. The height clearance is also a concern because when cross winds hit the vehicle it creates a very unsettling feeling and causes the vehicle to sway and get under the vehicle making prone to loss control. That wind does not have to be excessive; the mildest of winds will cause a disruption. Several measures have been taken to have a local Toyota dealership review and address the issue and they have come back and stated that it operates according to specifications. No one other than Toyota knows of those specifications and they will not disclose them until enough people highlight this issue by complaining. To add further insult to injury, Toyota has placed an administrative hold on any repairs unless they sanction it. In one of the latest uses, I had a deer cross my path and I tried to stop and the vehicle kept moving along and the brakes grabbed after 12 feet. I missed the deer but I was forced to relive the issue of how faulty the brakes are for this vehicle. It reinforced the issues with the braking system. We need for Toyota to own up to this hidden defect. The electrical systems in these vehicles seem to control every operating aspect of the vehicle and that appears at issue as well. Defect occurs during winter conditions only. While stopped & icy conditions exist, the vehicle has excessive hesitation when the gas pedal is depressed. The computer control allows the vehicle to move forward very slowly for at least 5 to 10 seconds after the pedal is depressed. When at a stop sign or light, this condition has lead to close calls while I have inched into the intersection. Not having the ability to accelerate to avoid oncoming vehicles has been problematic. The dealer noted the vehicle is working properly. The mechanics noted another customer had their vehicle in for the same issue & told him the same thing. Note that this condition has occurred each winter since I purchased the vehicle, but there appeared to be little that the dealer would "fix" since they did not believe there was a problem. I have assumed the root problem is with the computer control system, but I am not a mechanic.

While driving on the highway at the speed limit (60 mph), the vehicle surged/jolted forward pulling to the right. I was unable to regain control of vehicle causing me to merge into the direction of a tractor trailer. I tried to turn away from tractor trailer to avoid collision. My vehicle hit the rear tire of the tractor trailer and I began to swerve out of control. My brakes didn't seem to help either, they didn't function. This resulted in the vehicle rolling over 3+ times, the car was totaled. All passengers were hospitalized but no other vehicles or people were hurt from the accident. My concern is regarding the periodic engine surge and/or jolting and lack of brake control. This is a safety hazard that must be addressed in order to avoid future incidents. We were very lucky to have not been killed in this auto accident.
Failure of automatic braking control and anti-skid control. Service light activated but no recall or notice to consumers. See technical service bulletin br 005-03 (Dec. 4, 2003). Toyota refuses to recognize safety risk or obligation to replace outside of warranty period.
While driving, noticed that the vehicle decelerated quickly when letting off the accelerator. Returned home and after exiting the vehicle found flames in the area of the left, front wheel. The brake rotors on both left and right front were glowing red hot. Root cause was found to be a yaw rate sensor failure caused a computer to apply the brakes and leave them applied while driving.
While making a left turn at a controlled (light) intersection, my rear wheel skidded slightly on the wet pavement. At that point the abs system kicked in and totally locked up the left rear wheel causing the vehicle to spin 180 degrees and tearing the right rear tire completely off the wheel. During this spin I had absolutely no control over the vehicle which ended up crossing the highway divider before coming to rest in the lane of the opposing traffic. Fortunately no vehicles happened to be in that lane at the time or there would have been a very serious accident. I had the vehicle towed to the nearest Toyota dealer who claimed that a check of the computer revealed no erroneous message from the abs system, leading them to conclude that there was no equipment failure despite the obvious evidence of the tire having been torn off the wheel. I feel that if this had occurred at even a moderately higher speed the vehicle would have overturned, and if it had occurred at highway speed would have led to serious injuries or fatalities. Once I described the incident as a serious safety issue the dealer refused to work on the car claiming legal liability concerns.
Chk engine light,vsctrac light,trac off light all came on while driving down the road. Took to dealer,found gas cap off,chk light then went out but others did not. Dealer said all is ok vsc trac and trac off will go out after a few driving cycles. They have not yet. This is11/19/2008. While lights are on vsc and trac do not work. Had obd scanned shows no code at this time.
Warning lights began coming on around 60,000 miles or so. Started with the low tire pressure light & now has progressed to the vsc on, vsc off, abs warning lights being on all the time and the low tire pressure light is still on. I have taken this vehicle into 2 different dealers to be fixed for 40,000 miles or around 3 years which amounts to multiple trips to the dealer, waiting while they work on it or going without a vehicle for days at a time while they try to figure out what is wrong. They have replaced abs sensors, engine computers, brakes, speed sensor wires, reset computers, ordered new valve stems for the tires. I can get online & find thousands of complaints regarding the same issue in Toyotas & Lexus vehicles since at least 2001. The dealerships look at me like I am the very first & only person to ever mention these problems. The solutions online have ranged from defective master cylinder/brake booster assembly, faulty ignition coil, O2 sensors, vsc computers, catalytic converters & brake pedal switches. Also problems with the exhaust system & acceleration module under the console was listed as fixing these issues. Why has this issue not been addressed and/or fixed in 8 years ? there have been times when my brakes did not work, times when they barely worked, times when I put the brakes on & it abruptly pulls to the left or right & a couple of times when my vehicle would not accelerate as I was pulling across traffic. As I read of these "freak" accidents lately with Toyotas, I have to wonder if they really are "freak accidents". I do not want my family or myself to be one of the Toyota fatalities this year or anytime. When is something going to be done ? how many more innocent people have to die ?.
Complete loss of power on acceleration if tires spin. . . More than one close call! happening since vehicle was new.

On the evening of 2-4-10, I was traveling on an angled, curved, on-ramp to a freeway, when the vsc (vehicle skid control) suddenly and automatically applied the vehicle brakes. The vehicle speed was approx. The recommended speed for the turn. The conditions were wet, as it had been raining off and on all day. A beeping sound was heard, and simultaneously the vehicle lost traction, and traveled in a tangent/straight direction to the curved on-ramp. I had zero control of the vehicle for ~3 long seconds, and ended up sideways on the shoulder of the road. Luckily, no one was hurt nor close by. This could easily happen on a yield turn, causing a blind-sided t-bone collision, or rear-ended collision. This faulty system needs immediate fixing, and should be considered an extreme safety hazard.
