After noticing a strong gear oil odor and seeing the actual gear oil on the back the of the vehicle I was alarmed to find out that the rear axle housing had rust perforating the rear of the housing. Once the housing was checked by a certified mechanic and turned away due to fear of destroying the housing, I removed the vehicle from the road.

Less than 20000 miles after I had a remanufactured transmission installed, by Toyota, in my 2001 Toyota 4runner the vehicle became unresponsive to throttle input. The engine was running but the vehicle would not move in any gear. I put the vehicle in park and let off of the brake and the vehicle began rolling backwards down the hill. I applied the foot brake to keep the car from rolling further and shut off the vehicle. After a few minutes I started the vehicle back up low and behold, the vehicle operated normally. Today, I had a surge in the transmission while driving and the check engine light came on. Contacted Toyota for service. I have had numerous electrical problems with this vehicle but feel that this one posed a safety hazard worthy of reporting.

I have been complaining to my local Toyota dealership for several months that there is an issue with my 2008 Toyota 4runner changing gears. From time to time when I go from reverse to drive the vehicle does not engage gears. Just yesterday not only did the vehicle not engage, but when I went from reverse to drive (I checked to make sure that the vehicle was in drive) and I stepped on the gas the vehicle went into reverse, almost hitting the car behind me. This is a severe safety issue that my local Toyota dealership is not taking this seriously and could eventually lead to damage and/or death.
