Ignition Switch Problems of Toyota Avalon

Letter from senator ted cruz constituent and Toyota refusing to pay for a recall repair done on his 2003 Toyota Avalon (mailed to austin, TX office attn: susanna sovran). The consumer stated the vehicle broke down twice, and it had to be towed. The repair shop replaced the ignition cylinder and switch housing assembly, at a cost of $430. 00. Two months later, the consumer received a recall notice regarding an issue with the steering column upper bracket. The consumer went to the dealer, in regards to the recall, and ask if the recall was for the ignition switch, and the dealer stated no. When the consumer requested to see the part that was replaced, he noticed it was the same part, that was replaced in his vehicle two months prior. The consumer was denied reimbursement, in which the letter stated the vehicle did not meet the criteria, for reimbursement under the special service campaign goodwill.

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated the ignition switch caused the keys to bend and they have been replaced three times. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer who was unable to determine what caused the keys to bend when they were inside the ignition. The contact stated this was a safety issue because the vehicle could fail to start if the key continued to bend. The failure mileage was 39,316.

The other day the consumer parked car while rushing and took the key out of the ignition while the vehicle was in drive. The vehicle rolled backward and hit the neighbor's fence. The consumer had the key. It felt like the vehicle should have had some type of safety feature to keep the key from coming out of the ignition. This happened on September 12, 2005. Had not contacted the dealer.

While trying to turn key in ignition switch off doors and windows will automatically lock without being able to exit vehicle. Consumer also stated that brakes feel spongy, also when driving, the vehicle will sometimes accelerate by itself.

The electrical ignition switch will not turn, and has to play with the steering wheel up to 4 minutes for the ignition to turn.
