I purchased this vehicle as a preowned used certified from the Toyota dealership the car has broke down 4 times for the same exact issues all the lights will come on and it will say take to the dealer for service June 8 2024 purchased the car. November 2024 in the shop ( sensor ) December 2024 in the shop ( sensor ) no charge July 8, 2025 car had to stay overnight ( ignition coil $300 ) service told me the mechanical warranty expired in June. 8 days later July 17, 2025 broke down on the highway I was stranded for 5 hours had to pay for a partial tow out of miles. Its been 6 days no car. I dont feel safe in this vehicle and I think it has a defective system. I am locked into a contract with a vehicle that keeps breaking down. I have called the lemon law and they said my car is too old for a claim but not considered new by 1 year. I need some help, I have reached out to Toyota corporate and I am waiting to see what they plan on doing. I have been stressed out since my last breakdown with this car. By the way I have only put 4000 miles on it since I purchased it. Going on a road trip is out. I no longer trust this vehicle it just cuts off for no reason once the dashboard lights come on it just stops. I cant imagine having my grandbabies in that car its scary. Car is still in the shop its been 6 days now.

I was pulling into a parking space when the car suddenly accelerated, jumped the curb and hit a tree. The car has auto-braking but this system did not function to stop the car.
Intermittently, unpredictably, for several seconds at a time, the engine almost quits, especially when accelerating so far, it has not happened in heavy traffic, but if it did, it would create a possibly major safety hazard. I have not taken it to a dealer yet. Just learned about the fuel pump problem that is associated with my 2018 Toyota Avalon. Plan to contact the dealer tomorrow. I have not seen any instrumental warning or notification. There is no warning that the engine is about to lose power and so far the engine has not stopped, but recovers to normal operation. . This has been occurring over the last couple of months. I fear for my wife's safety so that she will be unable to drive this 2018 Toyota Avalon 3. 5l sedan until it is repaired.

On the morning of sept. 28, 2022, after my wife arrived home from work the previous night, and as I walked past her car, I heard the fuel pump running. The engine was not running, all switches were off and the doors were locked. I retrieved the key fob for the car, unlocked the doors, and entered the car. Upon pushing the start button, the fuel pump shut off, then the engine started. I let it run for one minute then shut the engine off. At this time the fuel pump shut off as well. To my knowledge the fuel pump has not continued to run, after the engine was shut off, since then. There have been 2 NHTSA campaigns recalling the fuel pumps on these vehicles, # 20v01200 and # 20v68200. When I contacted the dealership where she purchased the Avalon in January 2022 the service adviser stated the fuel pump in her car was replaced Nov. 13, 2020. There may still be a problem with the denso fuel pumps in these vehicles. If the fuel pump continues to run like this one did, and the fuel level in the tank is not high enough to properly cool the pump, it could possibly overheat and cause a fire. I would suspect this has occurred in more than just this 1 vehicle. To err on the side of safety I believe there should be another recall to replace the fuel pump. If not that, then a recall should be initiated to check the vehicle software for a programming malfunction that would cause the fuel pump to continue to run with the engine shut off.
This has happened 3 times now. When putting gas in and the pump kicks off fuel gushes out of the tank. I only had a quarter of a tank at the time. Only got $1 worth in the last time this happened. If you try to put more fuel in pump will kick off then it just pushes fuel out all over the ground, which could easily cause a fire. Took to the dealer today to get this on record, had a full tank so they did not not try to gas it up. Get no warning that this is going to happen. On all 3 occasions I was able to gas up without an issue the next day.

Changing intersection in the city streets engine stalls like its not getting enough fuel.
On Feb. 5, 2020 at about 6:30 am, my wife was pulling up behind cars stopped at a red light, as she applied the brakes to stop, the car suddenly accelerated, she pressed the brakes as hard as she could, the car continued to drive forward hitting the car ahead of her in line. She could hear the car engine racing and tried to put the car in park, but it went into reverse and rapidly moved backwards, even with her foot on the brake, hit the car behind her. She than once again tried to up the car in park, but put it back in drive and the our car accelerated forward again fill speed hitting the car ahead for a second time, all the time holding her foot down as hard as she could on the brake. After hitting the car ahead for the second time, she pushed the engine stop button and the engine stopped running at full rpm. She noted that there the front tires were smoking alot since the tires were rotaing even though the car was at a stop, due to the engine racing full rpm. Police were called and they dispatched a tow truck for our car. The police never arrived, the tow truck loaded our car and towed it to the aaa storage yard .

Every time car is filled up, there is a strong odor of gasoline as it sits in my garage. After driving it a bit, the odor goes away until I fill it again. I don't top it off, yet this happens every single time.
My car mostly parked in the garage. Lately, it's getting worse and noticing engine running rough, stall at speed about 20 mph and humming from under rear of the car hours after it's shut off.
I was driving on a highway when the car accelerated by itself, brakes did not work. The car put itself in the middle of two lanes, then accelerated turn half ,I think, crashed (the front of the car)with a small hill some how did not stop and ended up somehow turning back and crashed again this time the back of the car crashed against the hill and stopped. The car suffered several breaks in and a transmision repair. This is my third Toyota. It was perfect before the incident. It was very scary. Just a few min before the crash I was passing a toll at about 28 mph. After passing the tool I was faster than that but I do not like to speed.

Tl-the contact owns a 2003 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated that the rear brake light was permanently on. The vehicle was taken to the dealer kendall Toyota, 10943 s dixie hwy, miami, FL 33156, they determined that the rear brake light sensor was damaged and needed replacement, also replaced the battery. After the vehicle was repaired, the brake pedal traveled all the way down to the floor; but the vehicle did not accelerate. The contact also stated that for the past year and a half, a strong of fuel odor was present inside the cabin. The vehicle had been taken to several independent mechanics and they can not determined the cause of the smell. The vehicle was not repaired. I was pulling out of a church parking spot very slowly. Once out of the spot I stopped and then all of a sudden the car accelerated as if it shifted into curse control. We traveled approximately 15 feet before hitting a tree. It all happened so suddenly that there was nothing I could do.

Pearl white paint is peeling on right side and rear of vehicle. 2, airbag light stays on when stationary or moving.
Sudden acceleration when shifted into reverse gear and the brakes would not even slow the car. It was only stopped by hitting a low retaining was, knocking it down, and then falling over the edge of the driveway and being suspended like a "see-saw" over the edge of the driveway with the possibility of a 10+ foot drop off into a wooded ravine.

The advertised mileage of 39mph and 40mph is inaccurate. With careful driving the most I can get on my daily commute is 32. 9.
When accelerating from a stop the vehicle will sometimes move about 10 feet and then hesitate for about 1 to 2 seconds. It will then accelerate normally. When driving in heavy conditions at speeds under 35 the car hesistates badly when you try to accelerate and then "jumps" forward. Same thing happens on the downside to the point that it feels like its going to stall. The service advisor also said there had been other complaints about this condition. This condition is dangerous and not normal.

When driving north on I-95, my car began to slow down even though I had not released pressure on the gas peddle, so I accelerated. As soon as I accelerated, the car then began to run extremely rough, the rpm monitor fluctuated back and forth, and the began to slow down even more. I looked in the rear view mirror to check traffic as I prepared to pull off the interstate and saw smoke coming from the rear of the car. When I stopped and exited the car, smoke was then bellowing profusely from the front right side of the hood and upper right tire rim, so much so that I thought the engine was about to explode. It should also be noted that the check engine light never came on. A tow truck was called and now I'm waiting for my local Toyota dealership to open so that I can find out what is wrong with my car. A similar energy surge and rough driving occurred approximately one year ago and my car was towed in, but no problem could be detected. The problem stopped as mysteriously as it appeared, with no serious reoccurrences until yesterday, 9/7/15. In 2014, the mechanic chalked the problem up to possibly bad or cheap gas.

Fuel door would not open normally (pressing center rear edge) nor when using the emergency release pull cord located inside the vehicle trunk while pressing rear center edge. Also, fuel door could not be opened while pulling emergency release cord and pulling on rear center door simultaneously. Car was placed in service in February 2015 and has 2300 miles. Took car to authorized service center and service writer could not open fuel door with emergency release either. Car could not be refueled without damaging door or lock mechanism.
I'm not sure if the fuel/propulsion system is at fault; however, following is the problem I have experienced numerous times. When I tell Toyota service people about it, they don't seem concerned. When making a slow turn (usually left turn), it appears that I am about to stall - seems like there is not enough gas getting to system - or perhaps it is a transmission problem (geared down too low). I am a woman, so I don't know what the problem is. However, I have been scared numerous times. When this happens, I press the accelerator harder and I am always afraid the car is going to lurch forward too fast.
Received a recall notice from Toyota. The world Toyota dealership has no idea when parts may come in. The recall sounds serious, could potentially be a fire. It is shameful that they do not have the part and they have no idea when they will get it. When recalls are initiated are they not under some kind of order to correct the problem in a timely fashion?.
The engine started cold and revved to 2500 rpm and then oscillated between 2500 and about 3000 rpm and never slowed down. I put the car in drive and drove it the block and a half to my house using the brake to stop at the only stop sign on the route but stopping was difficult. The next morning I experienced the same ultra-fast idle and drove the car on an errand that was about 2 miles distant. The same pattern persisted but the brakes were heating up and smelling from frequent use in keeping the car within the city speed limit. It also stressed the automatic transmission while braking aganst the fast motor. I started shifting from drive to neutral and coasting to control the speed while the engine speed oscillation continued. I parked the car back home and had a tow truck take it to marietta Toyota where the diagnosis was to replace the idle control motor at a cost of $669. 00 less a $99. 00 negotiated discount. That service solved the problem but the problem had the potential to overheat the brakes, cause one to coast in neutral without ideal control of the car in an emergency, etc.
Just heard of the Lexus recalls about fuel leak problem. Toyota dealer found a fuel leak in my fuel line and I had to have it replaced. I just wanted to inform you just incase this is an issue with other Toyota models. .
I have had a driving licence for 68 years with 3 minor collisions with no fatalities or hsopitalizaions. When I was taught to drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission, I ws introduced to left foot braking and told it would result in faster braking as well as insuring that I would not drive into or through a store or building when my right foot slipped off the brake pedal onto the accellerator. We took possession of the Avalon on August 6, 2014. This first frightening incident occured August 11, 2014. I was attempting a u turn to reverse direction at an island on a divided highway, easing off on the gas pedal, but not removing my foot from it completely, while moderating my speed with slight applications of the brakes with my left foot. I removed my foot from the brake pedal and applied a bit more gas, and nothing happened, and I thought that my engine had stalled. My tachometer showed the engine was revved to 1200 rpm, but the car was slowing down. After a delay I estimate was 3 or 4 seconds, the transmission suddenly engaged, and the car took off. I had a few more similar incidents entering or leaving parking lots in the following weeks. I was told by a Toyota service rep. At the dealer that the Toyotas are designed to discourage left foot braking. After going through my several Toyota manuals I discovered on page 27 of the 2014 Toyota quick reference guide a paragraph entiled "Smart stop technology", which explains a feature incorporated to keep a car from rolling backwards when starting on a hill I believe that this could cause an accident for a driver with many years of left foot braking.
The subject of this complaint is my 2003 Toyota Avalon lx which had a total mileage of approximately 17,100 miles. This vehicle was last serviced at 9,000 miles plus. On April 29, 2014 the subject vehicle was parked in the back parking lot of a small Mini mall at 3601 e. Foothill blvd. ,pasadena, California. After we finished shopping at the Mini mall, we returned to the our vehicle and strapped ourselves in the car with our seatbelts. When I turned on the ignition of the subject vehicle I had my left foot on the parking brake and my right foot on the driving brake. After the vehicle started, I released my left foot from the parking brake and shifted the gear to the drive position when my car unintentionally accelerated forward. I tried to slow or stop my car by pressing on driving brake but to no avail. I estimate my car traveled approximately 200 feet before the left front of my car hit the right rear of a Honda fit and concrete planter. The collision with the Honda fit pushed it into a Honda crv that was parked in front of the Honda fit. There were no injuries to anyone however. My airbags did not deploy.
While driving in town at about 25 mph, the car will accelerate by itself to 30mph, even if the accelerator is released. Pushing down on the accelerator has no effect. The acceleration is brief and stops by itself. This has happened several times over the last few weeks. Cruise control not engaged. The car computer was re-flashed at the dealer year to address to address sensitive accelerator issues.
I was alone in the car and had driven into my driveway (after opening the garage door) to enter the garage. The car suddenly took off and before I knew, I had crashed into the side of the garage and went through it. The car smashed into gardening tools, snow shovels, lawn mower, leaf blower, trash cans, and flowering pots. It came to a stop partly by the coat closet wall that protrudes into the garage and partly by all the stuff that got caught under the car. The garage door railing was damaged and the door was hanging a few inches above my car. I heard things falling above me. I thought that the roof would collapse. I realized that the car was still revving and I shut it. I sat for a few minutes and then I opened the door and ran out into the house. The car, the garage, and garage contents were damaged. The airbags did not deploy. I think it was caused by unintended acceleration. I was driving at about 5 mph in the driveway and I have been doing this for the last 10 years. It appeared that the car just flew and I had no control over it.

February 25, 2014, I arrived for my 2 p. M. Doctor's appt and drove very slowly into a parking space. I was constantly braking because the Toyota Avalon sport 2011 has lots of low trim in the front of the car and I did not want to scratch the car. I kept my foot on the brake, stopped the car, then opened the door to check the white line to see if I was in my parking space. Then, the motor began accelerating very rapidly. Before I could turn the engine off, the car lunged forward and I felt like I was airborne. Within seconds, the car hit the very tall heavy metal and glass doors of the doctor's office and stopped. The car was covered with glass. The metal doors of the office were damaged. Please note, the airbags did not deploy. The entire front of the car: grill, headlights, fenders and hood were damaged. Thankfully no one was injured.
