The contact owns a 2005 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to accelerate, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The vehicle then returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who was unable to duplicate the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 10v017000 (vehicle speed control); the VIN was included, but the vehicle had already been repaired under recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was 170,000.

I was pulling into a parking spot when my car suddenly accelerated to a very high speed. I traveled over a curb, on some pavement, through some bushes, knocked down a light pole and miraculously came to a stop. My foot was pumping the brakes to no avail. My entire car was damaged but miraculously no one was hurt. Car was towed to a mechanic who confirmed that the car accelerated with him as well. Front, back, underside, roof, tires and frames were all badly damaged.

Date of safety issue: July 12, 2023 location: piper glen shopping center, rea road, charlotte nc (destination was run for your life at 6416 rea road - within the shopping center). Time: approximately sometime between 1:30 and 2:00 et police report complaint # - 20230712145501 on July 12, 2023 I entered a parking lot at a busy retail establishment. I chose a parking space that has a curb and bushes between the space and rea road. Due to the busyness of the parking lot it is imperative to drive slowly and cautiously. As I turned into the parking space the car suddenly accelerated, jumped the curb and crashed into the bushes. The brake did not stop the car until it jumped the curb. I then put the car in reverse and it again accelerated and the car spun to the left and then finally stopped. Thank god for the curb and the bushes which prevented the car from surging into traffic on rea road. And, thank god no one was in the path of the car when the car accelerated in reverse. That was a miracle at this shopping center since it is very busy. I went into run for your life and told them what happened. The salespeople looked on line to see if there were other similar incidents associated with Toyotas, specifically the Avalon model. They printed out 10 pages of incidents over various years. The experience was horrific and clearly the car is dangerous to drive. I called rock hill Toyota and spoke with the service advisor I've dealt with for several years. The car was towed to the dealership. The dealership's attitude is another story - very disappointing. A report was made at the dealership with Toyota brand engagement. I do not want this car back. Based on my research I found that Toyota cars have a history with the acceleration issue. In some cases there were serious injuries and fatalities. This issue is not resolved.

Purchased car used 11/2020 Jan 14 2021 had 2 open recalls steering casting defect and wire harness filter to deflect noise from ecm . I lost control of communication of operations. 12/2022 steering lock bar the past 2 years uncovered everything on my own. Learned somebody died in 2003 Avalon in texas about steering locking up. Plan to talk to class action lawyers over airbag and steering. And arrange my own lawyer with settlement lawyers to make this repair and all TSB to be performed. I will never buy a car unless I can find all TSB problems associated with that car. I hope recalls can be opened especially when you guys in government state safety ,compliance and emissions do not expire. Recall.

Stopped working with a message ' radar control in not available'.
Leaving a parking lot, the car jumped out of gear. Thought maybe I had bumped the gear selector but attempts at putting the car in gear resulted in grinding noises and the only option was to put it in park. Check engine light came on. Mechanic diagnosed a speed sensor. Had this happened on the freeway or while trying to pass another car on a two lane and a speed sensor disable the entire car to me is dangerous and should be addressed. Had the check engine light come on, I would have had the sensor replaced right away. I now feel this is an unsafe situation that could arise in other 2017 Toyota cars.

On 3 lane expressway (us422)about 1/4 mile from where the lanes split( see attached). No cars in front of me but cars in the lane to my left slowed. My car suddenly braked causing the car behind me to swerve to my right to avoid a collision. The adaptive breaking (incorrectly) determined that there was a collision hazard, thus creating an actual collision hazard.

The engine has quit while in traffic several times and the check engine light and the skid control lights are the only lights lit on the dashboard. Once the car comes to rest and one waits 3 to 5 minutes, the car will restart. We have taken the car to the dealer twice, ( each time the had it for nearly a week) and they could not find the problem. This is a very serious problem because the engine stops without notice causing loss of power steering and total loss of control. The lights for check engine and skid control are sometimes on when this happens, but not always; and the fact that these lights are lit does not predict this event happening. I think there might be a sensor in the engine that is faulty.

This incident has happened twice in three years. Hence it is a very rare occurrence. Both times involved the same events. Cruise control was on. I was traveling in the left lane of the interstate highway, approaching an 18-wheel truck which was in the right lane. When I was approximately 50 feet from the rear of the truck, the truck began to enter my lane. I suspect I was in the trucker's blind spot. My car did not sense the truck. The cruise control did not disengage. The brakes did not engage. But the most troublesome was that the car did not respond to my pressing on the brake pedal. I had to press 4 or 5 times before the cruise control would disengage and the brakes engage. Since I was traveling approximately 70 mph, the distance between my car and the truck (each time) closed rapidly. In the first instance, the truck tire hit my right front fender. I moved to the shoulder of the road and eventually the car braked. In the second case, I avoided collision by about 10 feet. I use the cruise control frequently and in every other circumstance, the sensors on my car have worked correctly and disengaged the cruise control and I have never had a problem with breaking. I suspect a blind spot in the sensor system but why, only in this situation, does the brake system fail to disengage the cruise control when I press on the brake is a very troublesome mystery to me. Answering question on web page: my safety - life threatening, no dealer consultation, regular maintenance schedule maintained, no warnings.

I just purchased a 2013 Toyota Avalon from carmax. During the next several days of driving I had observe the following. One. The rear window is distorted and will not come clean no matter what I attempt to use to be able to have a clear visibility. I also have noticed that while in a stop position, when beginning to accelerate the vehicle hesitates and I have to take my foot off the gas pedal and reapply to accelerate. I have a seven day return policy no questions asked. But I really love this car in been waiting to find that particular color exterior and interior which is black leather. I called Toyota and they could not find any recall or other problems with this.
Recall number: set16b: the seats cushion is compressed and when turn on the heater for the seats it get over heated and it hard to turn it down so it can cool off fast. I was driving on a highway when the car accelerated by itself, brakes did not work. The car put itself in the middle of two lanes, then accelerated turn half ,I think, crashed (the front of the car)with a small hill some how did not stop and ended up somehow turning back and crashed again this time the back of the car crashed against the hill and stopped. The car suffered several breaks in and a transmision repair. This is my third Toyota. It was perfect before the incident. It was very scary. Just a few min before the crash I was passing a toll at about 28 mph. After passing the tool I was faster than that but I do not like to speed.

On 10/25/18 I was involved in a head on collision when my gas pedal hung and lurched forward while I was pulling into a parking space at a doctor's office. I had slowed down to park when my car jumped the curb and hit the building head on. It was 3:50 in the afternoon and a clear visibility day. The police report has my speed at about 20 mph. My airbag didn't deploy, I did have my seatbelt on. It was straight front end damage to my car. As a result of the impact I am suffering from whiplash and possible (traumatic brain injury), also neck and back pain. I believe that the cause of this accident was the gas pedal sticking and as a result of no airbag deployment causing more motion on my head, neck, and back.
On October 1, 2018, at 8:25 a. M. I was pulling into a parking space at work in my 2016 Avalon (12,141 miles). I was riding the brake to pull all the way into the parking space. The car took off into landscape, crossed a road and went down a hill. I hit the parking lot and was knocked to my side. The car went back up the hill and crossed the road again, went through more landscape, bushes, etc. Back into the road again and stopped. There was over 11,000 damage to my car and I hurt my back and neck. Toyota examined the black box and said the gas pedal was being strongly depressed with no braking. That is impossible because after I hit the parking lot after coming down the embankment, my foot flew off the brake and was on nothing as I was all the way on my right side. 2nd incident yesterday, on 03/16/19, I was pulling into a gas station and was almost stopped after tapping the brake to get pulled up to where I was to stop and the exact same thing happened as my foot was on the brake, the car took off towards the gas pump. I was pressing the brake as hard as I could and was trying to grab the gear shift to put into park. I only went about 20-30 feet before the car stopped missing the gas pump by only about 1 and 1/2 feet. I can't say for sure if the brakes stopped the car or if I was able to get it into park. I had the car towed to my home and will never drive this car again. I am not sure what I am going to do because the car is far from paid for and I know Toyota will be of no help. I know for sure that eventually someone is going to be killed as I truly believe this is not just happening to me. After the first incident, I sent a certified letter to the president of Toyota and their legal department and their reply was Toyota was not at fault.

When starting the car and proceeding to accelerate the car stalls. There have been several incidents where the car has done this (each time being taken to service at Toyota). One in particular almost being hit by a truck when going from a red light to green light. Another one turning out of a parking lot and having to make sure there was absolutely no cars coming my direction in fear of being hit while turning and car stalling. These issues have been too many since I have purchased the car. This matter has been taken up to customer relations and reviewing how many times I have taken this vehicle in they continue to tell me that they have not failed to repair my car. I have continued to take the car to be serviced and diagnostic comes up with no problems in the computer system. *I also have videos and all of my service invoices regarding the stalling issue that has yet to be corrected. *.

I was backing into my garage and suddenly I could not control my car. It accelerated and I could not stop it. I hit the brake and car didnt stop until it crashed into my refrigerator in the garage. It happened so fast, like a bad dream. I could not control my car. I was only going approx 5 miles and hour then it accelerated to a great speed I could not control or stop my car.
Car was idling in park, placed shift into reverse, car accelerated forward with motor racing into a bench, destroying it. Jammed shift back into park shut off motor. Restarted car. Place shift in rev and backed off bench. Car worked properly. Had car towed to repair shop.
From the date of purchase (08/14/2017) I noticed a discrepancy between the analog speedometer and the center digital display of the speed (mph). Contacted the service manager of the dealer where purchased. He advised there is no fix. I noted numerous complaints of this problem on the web. The error is between 2 and 3 mph and varies with different speeds. Starting speed is zero with the errors occurring at different speeds. I have on numerous occasions checked the actual speed against local "radar" warning signs. It appears that the digital display is the most accurate. I have taken pictures of the discrepancy and sent them to the service manager. He then agreed to go for a test drive with me. He connected to the vehicle a Toyota tech stream device. I also had him activate his gps speed program on his cell phone. The results indicated that his tech stream device was not working properly and/or was displaying speeds that were not even close to the digital display or the analog display (the main round speedometer next to the tachometer). However, his gps phone app indicated that the digital display was the most accurate. The results also confirmed the discrepancy of 2-4 mph between the analog and digital displays. A complaint filed with Toyota last week by me resulted in a phone call from them indicating that there was no solution to the problem with the caller even indicating that there were no complaints of this issue to begin with. (just google it and you will see this has been going on for several years. ) now, this might not be an extreme safety issue but it sure could get one into a lot of trouble with law enforcement. If one thought he or she was going 66 mph and was actually going 70 mph in a 65 zone, you could be susceptible to receiving a citation for doing so. I should know, I'm a retired state trooper.
The contact owned a 2004 Toyota Avalon. While the vehicle was stationary and being shifted into park, the contact depressed the brake pedal. The contact heard the engine rev and the vehicle accelerated independently, causing the contact to crash into a fence. There were no injuries. A police report was filed. Tl the contact owns a 2005 Toyota Avalon. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a dealer (Toyota of mcdonough, 144 hwy 81, mcdonough, GA 30253, (770) 824-3567) for a manufacturer recall concerning the throttle body and the dashboard. Toyota of mcdonough scheduled an appointment for the throttle body recall, but was reluctant to provide the remedy. In addition, the dealer stated that they needed to order the dashboard, which took longer than 30 days with no follow-up response concerning part availability. The contact called another dealer (butler Toyota of macon, 4580 riverside dr, macon, GA 31210, (478) 476-1770) who stated that they would order the dashboard. Butler Toyota replaced the part, but the contact had to take the vehicle back because the pins needed replacement. The dashboard was rattling a few days after the remedy was provided from the dealer. The contact was waiting for the dealer to supply the pins to secure the dashboard in place to be structurally sound. The contact also called dch Toyota of torrance (310-468-4000 or 1-888-283-3134) and was advised to take the vehicle back to the dealer who serviced the vehicle.
