37 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2013 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 04/30/2016

In 2013 I bought a Toyota Avalon limited sedan. Before the factory warranty was expired, a clip holding the drivers floor mat in place broke. I took it into the dealership and was told it was not covered and the reason it was not is because 'I am getting in and out of my car the wrong way' they put the clip back in but did not repair the underlying carpet issue. I asked for them to show me a written manual or to at least demonstrate what it is I was doing wrong and I also asked if they were watching me get in and out of my car for them to have this information. They were unable to answer any of these questions but still refused to fix the issue. Flash forward and I get a pre-collision system recall. Toyota has no solution so they turn off the entire system. Now I have no collision mitigation when the floor mat clip comes lose again. The mat is under the break pedal and I cannot fully depress the brake pedal. The pre-collision system is turned off so no help there. I managed to reach down and pull the floor mat out from under the brake pedal and stop inched away from another vehicle. I feel that Toyota has needlessly put my welfare at risk and tried to blame me, and the way I ingress and egress the vehicle, additionally it has been nearly a year since they turned off my pre-collision system. I paid $4000 in upgrade fees to get that system.

47 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2007 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 09/07/2015

When driving north on I-95, my car began to slow down even though I had not released pressure on the gas peddle, so I accelerated. As soon as I accelerated, the car then began to run extremely rough, the rpm monitor fluctuated back and forth, and the began to slow down even more. I looked in the rear view mirror to check traffic as I prepared to pull off the interstate and saw smoke coming from the rear of the car. When I stopped and exited the car, smoke was then bellowing profusely from the front right side of the hood and upper right tire rim, so much so that I thought the engine was about to explode. It should also be noted that the check engine light never came on. A tow truck was called and now I'm waiting for my local Toyota dealership to open so that I can find out what is wrong with my car. A similar energy surge and rough driving occurred approximately one year ago and my car was towed in, but no problem could be detected. The problem stopped as mysteriously as it appeared, with no serious reoccurrences until yesterday, 9/7/15. In 2014, the mechanic chalked the problem up to possibly bad or cheap gas.

48 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Avalon

Failure Date: 06/13/2015

The car accelerated on it's own, brakes were locked !!! I made a left turn after a stop sign and the car just took off on it's own - accelerating up to 50 miles per hour. I slammed on the brakes, but they were locked. I quickly put the car in neutral, it slowed the car down about 10-12 miles. To avoid cars in front of me - I then put the car in park. After an ugly noise and jerking of the car. . . It did stop! there were no injuries or property damage. It was a horrific experience. The car was in full throttle! had it towed to a mechanic. . . . . It was still at full throttle when he looked at it a couple days later. He advised me to call Toyota. Toyota said it was out of warranty. I just want my car fixed,.

I immediately jumped out of the car screaming thanking god for my life he spared. I was traumatized at this point. I did come to myself and dialed 911 for the fire trucks because my car was smoking so bad. Next day Toyota company said it was my coil pack and charged me to fix it but I am now terrified of this car and refuse to drive it anymore. I had started driving and all of a sudden the vehicle accelerated. I applied brakes and had difficulty stopping it. I took the vehicle to a Toyota dealership and they could not find the cause of the acceleration. They suggested to call Toyota corporation and provided me with a 800 number. I told the rep of the problem and she informed me that the acceleration problem was resolved and new mats were issued to the customers. I acknowledged that the vehicle in 2010 was checked by Toyota and issued mats. I have not had any problems after that time but in March 2014, the acceleration started again. She said the issue is resolved and settled. I am concerned whether the acceleration problem was not what Toyota pinpointed and told us the problem was resolved. Why is this problem occurring after 4 years? what steps can be taken to ensure safety in driving this vehicle?.

2nd complaint (first complaint - #10522765) - on July 2, 2013, around 5:20 p. M. , my fourth incident of brake failure occurred. I was going about 5 miles and applied brakes. Brakes failed and engine sounded like it was racing. I crashed into a the rear of a sedan which was stopped. No injuries were sustained. We were able to drive the cars to a development to exchange insurance information. I drove the car to the dealership for trade-in since it was unreliable for driving at slow speeds. An earlier potential incident occurred in the morning when I was braking and slowing down to make a right hand turn, the individuals were crossing the street on which I was turning into and the brakes seemed to not engaged and the engine began to race. I applied more pressure on the brake pedal and the brakes engaged and stopped the car, barely. I am extremely disappointed in the lack of quality in the Toyota Avalon. I am also disappointed in the Toyota service center's focus of the braking system without examining computer systems' engine controls and speed controls.
