On my 1999 Toyota solara I have to use high beams just to see, and my car went 90 mph before slowing up,my handicapped son was so scared! then it just cut off while driving. He had to coast to safety and now it needs a new motor !! recalls about these problems pertain to the 1999 solara and are critical. This is twice life was endangered and Toyota is doing absolutely nothing to help resolve this very serious issue . I guess they wait till someone dies in an accident before Toyota does what they should do to keep the public safe!!! my car is just sitting there , how much does Toyota care when they don't even replace the petal or excelleration problem?? let there family member be endangered and see ! but Toyota is slacking extremely on the quality of their vehicles!!! they need to be investigated for the dangerous cars they are putting on the road . And with no help from Toyota when a serious issues happens . They should be discrased by their poor performance to jepordize the american citizens . . Just to put more money in their pocket . Now I have no car to take my disabled son to his dr. !!! they have no idea how they effect a persons life who has limited funds and many medical needs. The dangerous situations we were put through driving the Toyota car scares me badly! I used to have faith in their product . But it's very sad when they have lost their caring about their product and making the american family happy and more important safety!!!! these dangerous vehicles should be stopped!! just one vehicle could hit a school bus full of precious children , leaving parents and grandparents and precious brothers and sisters left devastated for years to come!!! the pain goes on and on and effects many generations possibly thousands and thousands of innocent people over the greed of money from the Toyota big wigs !!!.

My daughter was traveling north at 40 mph, and she turned around briefly to check if her little brother was buckled in his seat belt. When she turn back around the car was on the curve and she slammed on the brakes as hard as she could to stop the car, but the car wouldn't stop and preceded to accelerate. She went through partially two brick walls, knocked down a stop and street sign, and the car flipped a couple of times. The car ended up landing on the passenger side, leaving the car left side up. My daughter suffered injuries to the neck, back, and her knees were cut from the glass of the window in a result of the car crashing. Luckily, my son suffered no injuries. I am very concerned, why did the brakes fail in my daughter's attempt to stop the vehicle.
My daughter was on her way to school on the morning of 3/28/2012, when our 1999 Toyota Camry started to accelerate on its own. My daughter tried to stop the vehicle by pressing the brake as hard as she could but the car continued to accelerate. She put the car in neutral and the engine's rpm's went to the maximum. The car at that point must have blown a piston rod or valve, oil was spraying inside the engine compartment. She made an attempt to bump the accelerator pedal several times to see if it would release. The car was stalled on a main street with emergency flashers on. She again tried to start the car and rpm's went to the max and the at that point smoke started rising from under the hood. Several people came to see what was going on and tried to help traffic move around the vehicle. I arrived at my daughters location and with the help of others pushed the car several hundred feet into a residential drive way. I have now towed the car back to my home and need help to determine what the root cause for this failure was. I am very reluctant to make repairs to this vehicle knowing that this could happen again. As I review other vehicle acceleration complaints for the same make and model, I want other 1999 Camry owners to be aware that this type of acceleration problem can and does occur. We are very lucky our daughter did not suffer any injuries or cause any deaths with this vehicle. The final mileage is at around 162,000.
The contact owns a 1999 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that when she parked her vehicle she applied the brake and the vehicle accelerated and chrashed into a wall. The vehicle was taken to her personal mechanic and she was informed the idle needed to be repaired. After the repair the failure recurred 1 year later. The failure mileage was 45,000 and the current mileage was 67,000. Updated 07/06/12.
On numerous occasions, my 1999 Toyota Camry (4 cylinder) has experienced sudden unintended engine acceleration. I detected that this seems to occur when I am coasting towards a light before a hill, that the engine will speed up on its own and begin accelerating the car. Applying pressure on the brake stopped the car in most cases, but once I ended up accelerating and could not stop the car until I hit some bushes on the side of the road. It also happens when I was making a turn on several occasions that the acceleration increased on its own. I am reporting this now as with the news about Toyota Camry's, I believe the 1999 models have the same problem. The last date that this occurred to me was Feb 28, 2010, but it has been happening a few times per year for five years.
I was driving my 1999 Toyota solara, home in the rain going 50 mph when a street light turned yellow, I started to put on my brakes, but the car was not slowing down in time to stop before the intersection, so I took my foot off the brakes and just went through the yellow light. I felt that if I was driving any other one of my cars that I would have had plenty time to stop. When you take the foot of the gas on this car it does not slow down automatically like other vehicles. When I first got this 1999 Toyota solara I got a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign. There to I also though I had plenty of time to stop, but it seems like the engine is fighting against the brake when I try to stop. Since then when I come up to a stop sign I start braking much further back than I us to. Even when I'm stopped at 700 rpm, the cars seem to want to start going. I always the first one to start off when a stop light , because as soon as I take my foot of the gas the cars goes 5 mph with out even putting my foot on the gas. The drive-ability of this car is the same as owning a 1970's pumped out muscle car. I have also noticed that on the newer Camry based Toyota cars that the disc's on the disc brakes are twice as big as my solara's disk brakes, which means to me that Toyota knows that there was a problem with these brakes. To the novice driver I would say that the solara is a dangerous car to drive.
My Camry le 4 cylinder is experiencing sticky gas pedal from time to time. It is not sticking to the carpet. It has happened about 10 times so far. The problem happens when moving from complete stop position at light or stop sign.
The contact owns a 1999 Toyota Camry. While driving toward a red light approximately 10 mph, she put her foot on the brake pedal and the vehicle lunged forward and accelerated. The driver pressed her foot on the brake pedal with much force in order to stop the vehicle. The passenger thought the driver had engaged the accelerated pedal since the vehicle began to accelerate; however, she was engaging the brake pedal. The dealer inspected the vehicle and stated that there was nothing they could do since the vehicle was functioning properly. The failure mileage was 106,000. The current mileage was 109,890.
The contact owns a 1999 Toyota Camry. While driving onto the highway, with her foot on the brake pedal, the vehicle accelerated up to 80 mph. She was forced to apply extreme pressure to stop the vehicle and shift the gear in park. She was advised to check the floor mats; however, she observed that the floor mats were not related to the failure. She attempted to purchase new floor mats; however, the dealer stated that there were none available for her year, make and model vehicle. The failure also occurred the day prior; although, the acceleration was not as high, therefore, the contact thought it was idling to high. The current mileage was approximately 89,000 and the failure mileage was approximately 87,000. Updated 10/30/09 updated 10/30/09.
Vehicle accelerates on its own when accelerator pedal is not depressed and foot brake is not engaged. It happens without any warning and has already occurred 5 times. I have to step on the brake really hard to avoid hitting anything. It occurred also one time when in reverse immediately after starting which was extremely dangerous.
I own a 1999 Toyota Camry xl. My car is not on any of the recall lists, however, I do occasionally experience a sticky accelerator pedal. Since all the media coverage I've checked the floor mats, which don't seem to be related to the issue. I believe all Toyota products need to have a recall to be sure all years are covered.
About one year ago, I began to notice the accelerator pedal was intermittently sticky when I depress it. Sometimes I have to practically punch it with my foot before it finally gives way, causing the car to lurch forward. It continues to happen to this day. Some days it doesn't happen at all, and some days it happens every time I come to a full stop and then try to step on the gas again. I have never done anything to correct or repair it, because until this current recall, I viewed it more as a nuisance problem. Thus far it has never gotten stuck in the depressed position. According to the current terms of the recall, my car is not included. However, the information released today about this current recall leads me to believe that my sticky accelerator may be related to the recall and certainly warrants investigation.
The contact owns a 1999 Toyota Camry. The contact stated when he steps on the accelerator pedal the vehicle hesitates before it takes off. The contact called the manufacturer and was told to take the vehicle in to the dealer. The VIN number is unknown. The failure mileage was 130,000.

Today, just 2 hours ago, when I tired parallel parking my 1999 Toyota Camry into a meter parking lot along the street, as usual I gave it a little gas to back it in, but unexpectly, it suddenly accerated backward very very fast, hit the parking meter and broke the meter pole, it also caused a dent in the bumper and trunk cover area. No one was injured in the accident and nothing has been done so far to correct the failure.
Consumer states that vehicle would accelerate without warning dealer notified.

I was driving sountbound with 2 other passengers, we were all belted in. A car in the northbound lane cut across traffic into our southbound lane at that time I had no where to move so I applied my brakes her car proceeded to accelerate to apprx 40-45 mph and hit us head on. We had injuries bruises, neck injuries and the worst a broken sternum. At know time did our airbags deploy during this accident. I have contacted Toyota corporation and they said we were not hit hard enough for the airbags to deploy end of dicussion. Toyota has given us the cold shoulder and more or less not to bother them about this. I would like to know how come if we were hit so hard the airbags did not deploy. The police at the scene along with others were also concerned about the airbags not deploying and also they informed not to get into the car because the airbags could deploy at any time. The autobody shop is also concerned with the airbags but Toyota will not return their calls. If you could help in any way it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time, cyndy pitassi.
Consumer was traveling about 25mph on a side street traveling onto another street, and without prior warning, vehicle took off and hit two vehicles. Consumer had feet on brakes, and vehicle continued to move. Dealership was aware of problem. Consumer also experienced this same problem a year ago, however was able to pull over and stop vehicle, for this last accident, dealer replaced gasket and cleaned throttle body.
When put in park, and before consumer shuts off engine, vehicle surges forward, happend 3 times, once it went through a garage door. Dealer cannot find cause.
Pushed the accelerator, no response from the engine. Engine would spontaneously rev- without accelerator being touched. After a 2 hour rest period the car was again driven the same problem occurred. The rpm would rev without the accelerator being pushed, after about 50 feet the engine check light came on. The gas pedal would sometimes engage the engine so we were able to travel a short distance. It was unpredictable as to when the accelerator would work. It would sometimes kick in while the rpm's were reving and the car would jerk forward. I felt it was unsafe to drive. As we were shutting the car off to load it on the tow truck when thecar was shut off, and the keys were still in the ignition, the automatic door locks repeatedly went off- in a rapid motion about 20 times until the keys were removed. The car has been towed to a local dealer.
When putting vehicle in reverse car will jump backwards, and consumer is very scared to drive car.
The vehicle experienced sudden acceeration as the consumer shifted the vehicle from reverse to drive, the consumer pulled the emergency brake but the vehicle continued to accelerate and the engine began to smoke as she applied the brake and turned off the engine, the vehicle hit a fire hydrant and came to a stop, the consumer contacted the dealer about recall 01v-012 but was told that her vehicle was not included, consumer believes a wider recall may be necessary. Nlm.
While driving at 25 mph took foot off of the brake pedal and vehicle accelerat consumer applied the brakes again, and vehicle kept accelerating. Engine check light came on and won't go off. Also, driver's side shoulder belt wasn't working.
Unexplained acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear at 2800 rpm. The car will not stop in a safe distance.
All of a sudden vehicle went full throttle, causing owner to lose control o vehicle and crashed into another vehicle then into a brick wall. Applying brakes had no affect on stopping vehicle. The problem was reported to manufacturer.
