I got in my car and noticed there were several cracks in my dashboard from the drivers side across to the passengers side. They are spreading out and are starting to separate and are now in the area of the passenger airbag.
I live in florida and have had my car since 2006. Around 2011 I noticed a stickiness and a few cracks in the dash board and thought this was normal. Since, I have found this is a recurring issue with many Toyota solaras from years 2004-2008. Now the cracks are too many to count, the stickiness is horrible and the skin is pealing leaving this black under surface that is even more sticky. Also the wood finish is bubbling and chipping on the dash board and doors. So I did some investigating and it lead me to this site. If it's not already, this definitely should be a recall item.
Rear speaker covers are defective-I notice the holes were getting larger and touched the speaker and it fell/caved in! the pieces just fell apart like dust. These pieces fell inside and now making a crackling spark noise and if overheated cause a fire. It is over 100 degrees here in dallas texas. Contact Toyota and refuse to fix the $200. 00 problem to fiz=x. Toyota has hundreds of complaints online for the same problem since 2003. Toyota was well aware of this and continued to make the exact speaker covers for 5 yrs. They place the blame on the warranty up and or contact the dealer as they deny its their fault & claims its mine. I have no children nor sit in the back of the car, this is the first time I touched the speaker and it fell in. Now causing heat & sparks in the back of the car. May be hazardous & catch fire. Toyota denied to fix and carelessly continued to make the same defective part after receiving numerous complaints.
Several large cracks in the dash pad that go entirely across the dash and the area behind the steering wheel. Concern is the airbag deploying without a crash. Though I entered an incident date this is just an approximate time as to when the dash began to show the cracking. . . .
Dashboard began cracking and continues to do so. Has slowed down in progress after being treated with industrial aircraft solution. Many reports concerning cracking Toyota dashboards listed on google. Other solaras in my building have same problem. Toyota needs to "fess up" and correct this problem. Should consider changing car brands.
I own a 2005 solara convertible. Around 5 years ago my dashboard began to crack. It is so bad now that the lining of the dash is starting to show through. My car has always been garage kept and very well maintained. I have a friend with the same vehicle and it has done the same thing. Shortly after purchasing this vehicle I noticed that the rear defrost was not working. The dealership replaced the convertible top and assumed that it would fix the problem. Less than two years later the same problem occurred. The dealership was not willing to make the problem right for me so I, to this day, it still does not work.
I had an accident on the 22nd of January, 2010. When I exited the freeway, I tried to use the brake, but the car would not stop. It went faster and hit a tree. My car was damaged. Another thing is that I noticed that my rear speaker covers were cracked on both sides. A close look shows that the cover has disintegrated and become weak. When you touch it, it crumbles into little pieces. This is a very unusual thing; I have never experience this in other cars before. I don't know what the exact problem is. I think that Toyota should be responsible for this. My car is a 2005 Toyota Camry le model.
I own a 2005 Toyota Camry that has been maintained timely and properly, driven properly, washed, waxed, and basically treated like a new born baby. My complaint is as follows: I was cleaning the inside of my car and as I dusted off the speaker covers(as I've done for 2 years now), they began to crack and crumble into small pieces. The small pieces fell down into the speakers. I now have holes in my speaker covers and cannot retrieve the pieces from the speakers. The speakers are rattling and are damaged due to the crumbled speaker cover pieces. I have never placed anything on the speakers or traveled with anything on the rear dash. I understand this may not be viewed as a safety issue, but I feel Toyota should deem this a recall and be responsible for replacing the speakers and speaker covers at no charge to the consumer. This cannot be perceived as a consumer error, this is a manufacturing defect and the manufacturer should be solely responsible. Owners that bought new or used should not have to bear the burden of replacing the parts, deductibles, or service charges.
My dashboard is cracking apart and I note online that 1000's of other Toyota solara convertibles have experienced the same problem which will affect the air bags as well.
2005 Toyota Camry. Rear window speaker grills, both of them. They are cracking and falling apart even though no one has touched them an nothing has been placed on them. I understand this has become a common complaint. Toyota said I would have to replace the whole section for about $500 for parts. (not including labor) but others say the replacement part falls apart too.

The rear speaker covers on my 2005 Toyota Camry disintegrated. There are hundreds of other 2003-2005 Camry owners reporting the same problem. Initially you see cracks on the speaker covers, but when you touch them the plastic literally crumbles into dust and falls into the speaker cone. Toyota is aware of the problem and revised their parts policy; before they only sold complete speaker & cover kit for around $600, now they sell covers only for $25. However, the procedure to install them is labor intensive and people report being charged $100-$250 for labor. My local dealer wanted $100. The car is a couple of months out of warranty. This should be a recall.
Rear speaker covers cracked and fell apart when touched.
We have been the sole owners of the car and have lived in miami, FL throughout the entire length of ownership. Not long after time of purchase, we began to notice the same complaint so many other owners have complained about: the melting and cracking of the dashboard. Although the cracks and shine are unsightly and the stickiness is bothersome, the most troublesome result of this defect is the glare it casts on the windshield. Especially when driving in the direction of the sun, the glare without a doubt hinders visibility to a dangerous degree. It is my understanding that Toyota does not cover a replacement of the dashboard. Therefore, I strongly urge the NHTSA to initiate a recall for this part, as I am firmly convinced that it poses a serious safety risk. Please let me know if I can provide any documentation/proof of this problem. Thank you.
