2 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2016

Leaving my driveway I partially ran over a small tree stump, and it seems for no reason sudden acceleration occurred, I quickly applied my foot to the brake but even without my foot on the gas pedal, the car propelled like a race horse coming out of the gate. And even after applying the brakes the car did not slow down until I steered into woods to stop the car. I am not sure if driving over the small stump had any bearing on the sudden acceleration, but even the application of the breaks would not either stop the car from accelerating out of control or stop the car from hitting the tree.

8 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2014

The vehicle was turning into a parking space with the brake on. Suddenly the vehicle lunged forward and went through the glass front of a bank building, landing in the vestibule. The accident data provided by the inspector hired by Toyota clearly shows that at the time the brake pedal was depressed. When the brake was applied the acceleration increased from . 78 to 2. 27 and the engine rpms increased from 400 to 2000. When the brake was released at the time of the accident, the acceleration rate returned to . 78 and the rpms dropped to 1600. Toyota says they found no mechanical problems with the car and insists that both the accelerator and brake were pressed at the same time, which was not the case. This was not the first time the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly, but at the time we didn't realize that there might be a problem with the car. We feel Toyota doesn't want to take responsibility for this issue and are concerned that this might happen again. As a result, my wife is now afraid to ride in the car.

11 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2013

I was driving my car with my mother in it taking her to a doctor appointment. I was entering onto I-95 northbound from route 273 trying to merge into traffic, I was almost on the highway. The car suddenly accelerated and catapulted us across 4 lanes of traffic. The police said I hit another car, spun around and ended up facing the oncoming traffic stopped only by the guardrail. My mom had to be extricated from the car. I recall applying the brakes and the car not stopping, I also tried to put on my left turn signal but that would not work either. I later learned that the 2007 Camry (nearly 4 million of them) had been recalled for sudden acceleration problems. I was told by Toyota that nothing was wrong with my car but there is no way I intentionally went across 4 lanes of interstate highway traffic. Really??? my car was totaled. My mother was injured and was hospitalized from that day until mid December. It was a very difficult time. I would like for Toyota to take responsibility for their malfunctioning product and do the proper justifiable, compensatory thing. The other driver was injured and I believe her car was totaled as well.

18 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2011

Sudden unintended acceleration on August 25th 2011 at approximately 1:00 pm, my dad was driving to garvey ranch park located at (781 s orange Ave, monterey park, CA 91755) as part of his daily routine. He had already pulled into the parking lot and was getting ready to park his car facing north bound. All of a sudden the car accelerated out of nowhere and hoped the parking curb still facing northbound. In order to avoid any casualties and prevent hitting any of the children near the playground, he was able to steer the car and made a u-turn at about 150 degrees. At this point he was facing south bound of the parking lot and the car continued to accelerate at high speeds. His car then hopped the curb on the south side of the parking lot. Once the car hopped the parking curb on the south side, it continued to hop over a couple of raised concrete blocks that delineate a path onto the hillside just south of the parking lot. Due to the steepness of the hill, it prevented the car from going any further and the car crashed in between two trees located on the hillside. We had already taken the car to longo Toyota due to the acceleration recall back on March 13 2010. I couldn't believe the car still had mechanical issues after we had it serviced it for the recall and was glad that my dad did not sustain a very serious injury. The car is available for inspection if an NHTSA official would like to inspect the car.

20 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 05/29/2011

I was parking my 2007 Toyota Camry behind a Jeep wagoneer that was headed forward in a parking lot. I was almost at the stopping point with my foot on the brake and within a foot or so of stopping, when my car suddenly lurched forward with extreme force, pushing the Jeep wagoneer about 8-10 feet forward. My car continued accelerating and the passenger side of my car severely crashed against the side of the SUV that was parked next to the Jeep wagoneer. My car finally came to rest. My 2007 Toyota Camry was part of the the recall in 2010 and I had my car in for the recall repair in Feb. 2010. Prior to hearing anything about Toyota's sudden accelaration problems, I had a similar experience with the same vehicle around mid-2009 (uncertain of date). At that time, I was again turning slowly into a parking space and almost at the stopping position when the car roared forward, jumping the curb of the parking lot and going towards the right on a grassy knoll. There were no injuries nor any car damage, so I did not report it and did not understand the cause of the incident until I began learning of Toyota's suddent acceleration problems.

23 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 09/19/2010

I own a 2007 Toyota Camry. In September 2010, I was involved in an automobile accident as a result of a mechanical defect and/or failure of systems in the vehicle. The accident was not the result of human error. Upon my approaching a parking space, the car lunged and suddenly accelerated. The car crashed into a building, resulting in property damage. There were no personal injuries. I filed a claim with Toyota. I requested inspections of the vehicle from not only Toyota, but also from my insurance company. Toyota denied responsibility based on the erroneous information from the computer "black box. " the body work on my car was just completed. I no longer have confidence in the safety of my car. I fear that the vehicle could malfunction again, resulting in a worse scenario than the accident in September 2010. Before more fatalities, injuries or property damages occur as the result of mechanical defects and/or failure of systems in Toyota vehicles, the NHTSA should thoroughly investigate any and all claims against Toyota vehicles that have a history of problems. Toyota should be held accountable. I have requested that my car be replaced by Toyota. I don't doubt how Toyota will respond to my request. They will hold true in their denial of responsibility.

25 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2010

On 4/3/10, unintended accelerator "fix" per Toyota letter was performed on our 2007 Toyota Camry xle (vann york Toyota in high point, nc). On 4/12/10, while my wife was driving at 35mph on a city street, maintaining constant acceleration; then, she removed the foot of the accelerator as she headed toward an intersection, when suddenly, the engine speed drastically increased (I. E. Revved up like when the driver steps on the accelerator to achieve a fast velocity rate of change); however, the car velocity decreased and she applied the brakes to get to the intersection and make a right turn. It is important to point out that the sudden engine speed increase lasted for approximately 5 seconds; afterwards, the engine speed went back to the normal (previous) level. After making a right turn at the intersection, there was no re-occurrence of this issue, and my wife and 5 year old daughter made it home safe. The sudden engine speed increases have occurred multiple times in our 2007 Toyota Camry since we bought it late 2006. We have reported this issue, as well as what feels like infrequent tire slippages to several dealerships (in phoenix and greensboro), but they have never found any issues while inspecting the car. We are extremely concerned that even after Toyota has recommended the accelerator "fix" (they changed the shape of the accelerator pedal and made an update to the engine throttle computer) and the fix has been applied to our car, it continues to behave in the manner described above. We feel the car is unsafe.

26 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2010

I was driving for work with my Toyota Camry 2007. While accelerating to get on the highway, around the end of the ramp, my vehicle suddenly accelerated with no controls working from the driver's seat either for the steering wheel or the brake. In a matter of a few seconds, the vehicle went a few times in a zig-zag manner and subsequently hit a semi-trailer which was southbound on the highway. My car was completely smashed in the front and totaled later. This incident occurred after my car went through the accelerator pedal replacement as per recommendation of the Toyota recall procedure. I could have been easily killed in this accident. I got a traffic ticket for the first time in my life after having a ticket-free driving record for the past 11+ years. I am pleading 'not guilty' for this ticket because the defective Toyota car was responsible for the accident and not my error.

27 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

30 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2010

I drive a 2007 Toyota Camry this is one of the safety recall cars. I had been having issues with acceleration before the recall, then got the recall fixed on February 21st. I had a few small issues these past few weeks with it suddenly accelerated but this morning the way to work I was driving on the 101 in phoenix heading to work when my Camry suddenly started accelerating this time it was not a small issue but it accelerated to almost 80 mph I was driving around 65 mph when it suddenly started. I got the car slowed down and pulled over to the side of the road to catch my breath because I was very scared. I then made it, the rest of my way to work which was about 8 miles. I drive 50 miles each way to work everyday, I drop my husband off at work, I drop my 17 month old daughter off at daycare and this to me is unacceptable. I as of today do not trust this car to drive any where. Something needs to be done about this immediately, can you please help in making that happen.

31 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2010

I have a 2007 Toyota Camry 4-cylinder non hybrid vehicle. I brought my vehicle in for the required recalls and while I was in line with other cars to drop it off, I needed to move up about 30 feet. I had my foot on the brake and gear in park. I started the car and put the shift lever into drive with my foot still on the brake. The engine started to rev up, but with my foot on the brake, it did not move. I quickly put the shift lever into neutral and shut the engine off. A Toyota employee came over and tried to reproduce the situation, but could not. I have a problem with the recall fix. If the car accelerates for no apparent reason and I put my foot on the brake, the acceleration is supposed to stop, but in the time between sudden acceleration and my foot hitting the brake pedal, I could have an accident. My wife and I am very wary about driving this car.

32 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2010

Toyota Camry accelerator pedal fix not acceptable. . . Way too small pedal after being cut having just received my recall notices I quickly made my appointment to complete all three (3) Toyota recalls for my 2007 Camry. Prior to dropping my Camry off at queensboro Toyota I performed my "due diligence" and research the possibility of having part number 15772-31030 used for recall #ssc-90k. Google and bing researches clearly alluded to using part number 15772-31030 which is a 1-piece solid metal tube versus the trouble prone 3-piece 04009-33131 used by the dealer. I requested part number 15772-31030 be used to effect the repair and even offered to pay for the part out of my own pocket. My concern is this is my first Toyota vehicle having decided to wean myself off domestically made vehicles due to a perceived quality lacking in domestically manufacturer's vehicles. I even reluctantly purchased a 7-yr 100k Toyota extended warranty for peace of mind having had terrible experiences with Toyota vehicles in the early 1970's. I am not happy having had to settle for the same problem prone part for recall ssc-90k and believe this is Toyota's way of delaying a proper viable oil line fix until my warranty runs out in which case it will be on "my dime" to fixed an already inevitable repair once again. I am also not too thrilled with also having my accelerator pedal "cut" and I already find my foot slipping off the accelerator pedal as I accelerate or let off the gas when I drive. My wife refuses to drive or be driven around in this 2007 Camry due to her belief it is a time bomb waiting to once again manifest unintended acceleration issues. My immediate concern is Toyota "cheaped out" using the same oil leaking prone part just to save labor costs versus using a 1-piece solid metal oil tube which is now in all the 2009 and 2010 Camry's. . . . Please do not insult me by stating the 3-piece oil line is "just as good" as a solid 1-piece metal oil line.

33 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

2007 Toyota Camry le continues to have runaway unintended acceleration despite the vehicle undergoing a series of modifications at a Toyota dealership in auburn, CA. It has happened prior to be fixed and has happened once since being fixed.

34 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2010

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) I received a Toyota safety recall notice on my 2007 Camry. The notice described three separate repairs/remedy to my vehicle. The first repair involved installing a metal shim in the gas pedal assembly, which I had the dealer perform. The second "remedy" involved a technician cutting a section off the end of the gas pedal and cutting out a section of padding from under the drivers floor pan carpet. I declined this work as I have a newly designed awfm properly secured in place and do not believe this "remedy" would retain the oem quality of the vehicle - Toyota should redesign and install a new gas pedal instead. The third repair involved installing a brake override system. Of the three repairs, this is the most important as it offers a broad level of protection against unintended acceleration versus the narrow level of protection provided by the other two. When I called my Toyota dealership to have the brake override system installed they refused to do the work without also performing the gas pedal and carpet padding modification "remedy". I explained my dispute over this work and was given the number to Toyota customer service. After a forty minute wait I explained the situation to the Toyota customer service representative hilda. She also stated that Toyota was unwilling to install the brake override system without doing the other modification work. When I asked her for a reason she stated that Toyota agreed to NHTSA to do the work as a single recall. When I pressed her to determine if the NHTSA required Toyota to only perform the work if both the repair and "remedy" were done together, she stated she was unable to help me further and provided me with a case number ([xxx]). What do I have to do to make my vehicle safe? why is cutting up a vehicle without committing to properly repairing it at a later date considered acceptable?.

35 Car Accelerates On Its Own problem
