36 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2010

My 2007 Toyota Camry is dangerous and defective. I have being saying since my first maintenance check at the dealer that the car doesn't seem to be working the way it should. Now it has been recalled for a "sticky pedal". The problems I have are not a sticky pedal problem. The car lurches at times when accelerating. It lurches forward from stops. I have already hit a curb because of it just a couple of weeks ago. I have video footage of the road and the damage to the car from hitting the curb. I can email you the video footage. The car also seems to drift momentarily as if there is a steering synchronization lapse defect. When I mentioned these both to the dealer a year ago, the dealer's service tech said it was just the safety feature of the car working properly. There are split seconds when the steering wheel does not control the car while it is driving. This all seems to happen randomly. I wonder if Toyota programmed the car to do this on purpose to increase the number of times I would need to have the car serviced. The dealership has so far refused to take the car back and cancel my lease. So I am still driving this unpredictable car every day. There is something wrong with this car.

37 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2010

I have a 2007 japanese-made Camry. I bought at a premium (well above invoice and above msrp because servco hawaii does not give discounts) thinking I was paying for a reliable and well-made vehicle. I have had other Toyotas but none with as many problems as this vehicle. And, with all the news of accelerator problems, I would like my problems checked and not be charged for it. I do not like the idea of having to pay $103 (1hr labor) x 3 different accelerator issues + another $103 to see why there is the smell of gasoline coming from the a/c vent. 1. When stepping on the accelerator, I will get no response. . . I continue to depress the gas, still no response. Then finally, the car will thrust forward violently. This has been mentioned to Toyota hawaii dealer several times saying it was normal for drive by wire vehicle and that it will take some getting used to. 2. When accelerating slowly, the car will rev high without the automatic transmission upshifting. . I have to depress the gas more and the car will rev even higher before upshifting. 3. On 2 different times, the car has revved and jumped forward while not in gear. The first time was at an intersection. I shifted into neutral with the p-brake on and it felt as if someone hit my car from the rear. The car jumped into the busy crosswalk about 2 feet until I hit the brake pedal and shifted it back into drive. Another time was at the drive-thru window in park. The car didn't move but jerked violently. Both were on flat surfaces. 4. When under heavy acceleration, the car sometimes give off the smell of gasoline. It is not exhaust fumes but smells of raw gasoline. A/c in recirculate mode. I also have been having numerous other quality problems with excessive rattling of trim and door ajar alarm going off for no reason.

38 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

Steering wheel continues to sound as though it is grinding and the noise and vibration of the grinding goes into the gas pedal. I took the car to the dealer and he said that all it needed was to be oiled, which he did on a Saturday and by Monday it had returned.

39 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/17/2009

My 2007 Toyota solara power steering locked up initially 12/17/2009 while exiting a freeway offramp causing me to continue veering left into the curb fortunately with no injury to myself or car. The cars behind, also exiting, nearly slammed into me but had enough room to stop and swerve around. The wheel was locked for nearly 2 minutes then finally released while the car remained running with no engine failure. The same issue occurred 12/24/2009 in the evening while exiting a parking lot which again fortunately no one hit me. The steering wheel did not unlock for nearly two minutes again with no engine failure. Currently the car is with Toyota dealer and has had no past history of issues and undergoes regular scheduled maintenance. It is currently being further diagnosed after I filed a complaint 12/28/2009 since the service team representative was advising me the car will be released and to bring it in if another incident occurs. I am reporting this issue as the third time may be fatal to myself or others. It is unacceptable for a dealership to release a car which could cause fatality. As a result I am awaiting approval from the dealer to approve the change out all technical components that deal with the power steering.

40 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

I was driving my 2007 Toyota Camry in a left turn and suddenly the steering wheel was locked up. I tried to hit the brakes, the brakes was locked up too. I lost control of the car and ran into woods. Car hit a tree in front and stopped, but none of the air bags deployed. Thus, my head hit steering wheel and got two cuts on my forehead. I was sent to er and had a surgery with 11 stitches. The car is a total lose now.

41 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2009

The steering wheel flutters a lot at highway speed. This happens even in perfectly smooth road and in a little rough road the vehicle is uncontrollable. Toyota known about the problem and has a TSB (TSB 01-06-08). However, dealers always ask to go for wheel alignment, balancing etc and does not want to fix as per TSB. This is a significant safety issue and must be considered as a recall.

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2009

2007 solara convertible continually veers to the right while driving at any speed and particularly when braking. This has been occurring since August 2009 when I bought the vehicle. I do not know whether or not this was occurring earlier than that but I suspect it may have been. I have had the tires aligned three times and those alignments did not correct the problem at all. No accident has occurred; however, it is difficult and dangerous to have to continually pull the car to the left to compensate. Also, the car is on it's third set of tires because of this steering deficiency and it has only 65,000 miles on it.

43 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2009

I have problem with my steering turning left and right there is a loud noise and also vibration in gas pedal when I stop at red when green light star gas pedal take long time respond I take to dealer they don't anything with my problem.

44 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2009

I bought a 2007 Toyota Camry brand new and had it 2 days when needing to take it back to the dealership for a front end problem. The subframe bolts were loose and needed to be tightened and aligned. I have worn out 3 sets of tires in 2 years. The car only has 50k miles on it. All different brands of tires used and the first 2 wore out at 18,000 miles but the last wore out at around 5,000. It has been on an alignment rack 3 times and each time needing small adjustments. The car also has a binding noise upon turning the wheel to the left. Called dealerships and they will do nothing or even confirm that there is a problem with car. I am disguised. I have spent over $1000. 00 on a car that is still new. Help with all the money Toyota is making they should be held accountable and have a recall on the issues and reimburse owners. I do not expect to put hundreds of dollars out on a new vehicle.

45 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2009

2007 Camry le 4 cylinder . . Steering has sound when taking right left or back up. . . Some weird noise like clunk or light hit of drum kind.

46 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2008

2007 Toyota Camry le, there is a looseness, or a clunking noise and sensation from the steering wheel. This happens when the wheel is turned from left to right. There are forums on this issue. Please help us.

47 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

I purchased 2007 Toyota Camry le. I have had nothing but trouble with it. The car has put me and my family in danger every time we accelerate. It will not go. The car almost stalls out. Also when I make left turns the steering seems to lock up. I have to jerk the car back to the right to get the steering wheel to unstick. Brought it to the dealer and they tell me everything is okay. Of course they will say that. I think they train them in school to use that answer. I will be bringing the car back to them because this is getting scary. The car only has 12k miles on it. I have seen hundreds of complaints on this same thing so if they state does not do something, than they should be held liable if someone dies in an accident.

48 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/30/2008

Early in 2008 I was driving the car and turned sharply to the left at slow speed and the steering wheel did not return to center until I pulled it back. I went to a large empty parking lot later and noticed that when the wheel was turned all the way to the left or right it would not return to center unless you pulled it back. This is only at slow speeds. I took the car to desert Toyota on 1/21/08 invoice number tocs263971 and they replaced the steering shaft noted on TSB st002-07. I drove the car after that and noticed only a small change and the wheel still would not return when turned sharply to either side. I returned to desert Toyota on 1/30/08 invoice tocs264822 and they opened a case with Toyota #080300212. On 4/18/08 invoicetocs273903 field technician loren muncee came to town to examine the car. He compared it to a car that was supposedly equipped exactly like ours and said it did the same thing ours did. He also noted there was no mechanical failures on 4/28,29,and 30 I spoke to Toyota customer service and dealt with julie(1800-331-4331 ext 73115) I was told that Toyota had done all they were going to and my next step, if I was not satisfied, was arbitration. I have the arbitration paperwork but have not submitted it yet.

49 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota solara. While driving at any speed, the vehicle would pull to the right. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle several times, but the failure continued. The current mileage was 2,848 and failure mileage was 254. Updated 5/6/08 updated 05/06/08.

50 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/18/2007

Front end shimmied when braking. Found front tires were cupped. Had just rotated tires, leaving on a trip, so rotated tires back to front. Returning on trip, car front shook badly when braking going downhill in mountains. Took to dealer, they said (bridgestone) tires showed cupping. Replaced front brake linings and car seemed to handle ok. Three months later, another trip through mountains, again front end shimmied badly when braking going down steep incline. Dealer said all tires showed cupping, but brakes, cv joints, bearings were ok. Suggested I replace tires (but did not try to sell me any???) installed 4 new michelin tires and car handles great although I still feel some dragging in the brakes. Another trip to dealer, paid for a brake inspection and dealer said brakes ok 80 % remaining wear. Car now out of warranty, told dealer I felt they were stalling me on repairs until warranty expired. They said repair record would show problem in past if condition continued. Did not say what condition they were referring too. Feel they are giving me run around on steering problem, but as they said, there are no mountains around here they can test drive.

51 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2007

The contact owns a 2007 Toyota Camry. While driving greater than 50 mph, the steering wheel shook violently and made the vehicle difficult to drive. The dealer is aware of the failure and stated that it could not be repaired. The VIN was unknown. The current mileage was 3,600 and failure mileage was 7.

52 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2006

Clicking, clunking in felt in steering wheel, especially noticeable at low speeds, but can be felt at highway speeds also. Dealer looked at problem and stated they repacked bearings in steering shaft. Didn't make it out of the dealers lot and problem still there. When taken back to service desk, dealer stated that I needed to work the grease in and that it should go away in a few days, if not to call them back to have steering knuckle replaced. Problem still there after 300+ miles of driving since having bearings repacked.
