Abs light on, brake warning light on, difficult to brake, air conditioner malfunctioning and seems connected to this issue.
Am writing to report a critical safety issue with my 2008 Toyota Camry hybrid's abs module. The problems I've encountered include failing abs modules, weak braking, vsc light illumination, a ringing sound, and occasional brake failure, requiring excessive force to regain control. This abs module problem is alarmingly common in Toyota Camry hybrids from 2007 to 2011. Repair costs are exorbitant, and the widespread nature of this issue poses a significant safety risk to drivers and passengers. I urgently request the NHTSA's immediate investigation and collaboration with Toyota to address this matter and ensure the safety of affected vehicles.
Actuator and pump assembly, leaks won't build pressure makes brakes where pedal don't work.

Abs/vsc actuator pump failure and with the abs alarm on causing constant drain to the system needing jump every time or to disconnect 12v every time parked. Dealer diagnosed wrong last year stating 12v battery needed replacement. I did the $500. It did not fix the problem. Now dealer states actuator pump failure - replace/fix price approx $4,000. I asked for diagnostic readouts to prove to me that they have it right this time. (I'm over 50 hours into this abs failure) he refused and would not agree to refund my money if I would go ahead with their advised repair. My car has only 116,000 miles on it! I've checked around & it seems that my model should be part of recall/repair. I've gotten nothing written from Toyota when I have inquired in writing. Extremely dangerous, this failure!.
Breaks are not working. Abs is acting like it is in panic situation. It happens randomly. I almost went and hit somebody due to car not stopping. I am able to reproduce the issue but Toyota dealer is not accepting it. He says without seeing fault code in Toyota diagnostic tool they can't do anything. They are asking me continuously drive the vehicle. If I drive knowinly there is an issue with abs who will be liable for accident or death. I saw few NHTSA complains raissed similar to my issue. Here they are. Nhtsa compliant 11327259 and 11321857. Please take this seriously and help us out. There are many owners experiencing similar issues for the same model vehicles. They have done recall on hybrid model but non hybrid vehicles have same problem. You can reach me at 4089601234.
Vsc light came on. No breaks. Almost hit the car in front of me.
Vsc light comes on and beeps after 3 years of being replaced by Toyota under warranty it happen again - the abs breaks are not there and a continuous beep sounds. I was quoted 1600 to fix although I dont have the money and Toyota knows of this issue 2008 toy cam hybrid stationary and moving.
The ac does not blow cold air at all. The eco button doesn't work. When pressed, the car stalls. This was while the car was parked. Too afraid to try while driving. Visibility is poor. I've replaced the brakes numerous since achieving ownership.
While on the way back from a short trip to California from arizona, our "service engine" warning light became displayed on our dash along with "check vsc system. " the braking became somewhat erratic and the vehicle seemed to "wander" more within the lane on the highway casing us to reduce our speed. When arriving home we made an appointment to have our vehicle serviced and it was found to have a faulty anti lock brake actuator that had to be replaced at a cost of $2900. 00. . Read more...
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. The contact stated that while driving and attempting accelerate to merge onto the highway the vehicle started to shake and slow down significantly. The contact took their foot off the accelerator and the vehicle stopped shaking and operated normally after that incident. No warning lights came on the dashboard. The dealer family Toyota of burleson 801 s burleson blvd, burleson, TX 76028 (817) 768-2829 gave the vehicle a multi point inspection. There was an error code number: 1391 witha failure of the abs actuator. The manufacturer had not been contacted yet. The part fails randomly with no warning lights or braking lights coming on to warn vehicles following from behind. They quoted a cost of $2,050. The failure mileage was 190,000. Tf.
Check vsc system warning light illuminated.
My wife was driving home one day and told me that the car was shaking violently. When I drove it, it shook but was not too bad. I thought it was a tire balancing issue. Then it happened. I was driving one day on the freeway, the car started shaking and the abs was activated! I stopped the car on the road and I could smell the brake smoke. The the last straw, I'm driving home one day and the brakes seized I was able to get the car to the dealer who told me the brake actuator was the cause and it was common for the year/make/model but there was no recall and the cost of repair was $3k. Three thousand dollars for something that is "common". After having my car for 3 days, Toyota agreed to pay half of the costs, so it still cost $1500 to repair, plus $100 for a brake job, though I had a brake job 6 months old! like many many others, our 2008 Toyota Camry has and continues to experience major issues affecting the safe operation of the vehicle, including but not limited to brakes abs activating on its own, brakes seizing, premature brake pad/rotor wear, dashboard lights not working, car mats, brake pedal, sun visors, dash board melting, motor mount breaking for no reason, dashboard gauges not working (speedometer/odometer/fuel/temperature etc), cruise control working intermittently where it turns off by itself, door panels coming loose, speakers stop working properly. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. Though we've enjoyed owning Toyotas in the past, we've owned this one for almost this one for almost 11 years. And though we're looking to get a new car soon, I'm fairly certain that because of the issues and more importantly the corporate treatment by Toyota regarding issues with their product, this may our last one. The NHTSA should encourage Toyota to do whatever is necessary to fix these issues before they become fatal.
This is life of car new 2008 t0 2017 less than 20000 miles clutch had to be replaced all engine wires replaced brakes rusted out sun visor kept falling down.
Toyota dealer has conducted 3 separate excessive oil consumption tests on my car. Each time I was told my car "passed" and did not meet their requirements for excess oil consumption. I can only go 1200-1800 miles before I am warned that my oil is low. We recently discovered that at approximately 1200 miles after my last oil change, my car was registering "0" oil. Toyota, while knowing they have a problem, are not helping me as a Toyota owner. I am warned of low oil when I brake or turn. In a separate incidence, I recently spent over $2500 on the brake actuator and was told that even though I read about Camrys having this problem, it did not involve the non-hybrid Camry. I was driving the car when I was warned by the car of the problem.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. While driving various speeds, the speedometer and the rmn dial fluctuated up and down, and the brake and abs indicators illuminated. The failure recurred several other times. The vehicle was taken to an independent dealer, but was not diagnosed and repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 65,000.
The crash happened in a parking lot on March 19th, 2016. I had entered into the parking spot, by turning right. The car had come to a complete stop and my foot was on the brake pedal. Suddenly I heard a loud revving noise and before I could even react to it, the car had jumped on to the walkway of the building. Since I had stopped, my foot was on the brake pedal and even though I was pressing on it really hard, the car didn't stop. It slowed down a little bit for a fraction of a second, but then accelerated itself again, jumped ahead once more, went through the awning of a business suite in the building and hit a light post. The airbags didn't deploy. The car was totaled. As, I had turned right to enter into the parking spot, the steering wheel was still turned to the right and the car turned right and went parallel to the cinder block wall of the building, instead of going straight and hitting the wall, which could have turned fatal for me and my child. This vehical had been recalled earlier. I had received the recall notice from Toyota in early 2010 for "potential floor mat interference with accelerator pedal (safety recall 90l)" and had it repaired in may 2010, from a local Toyota service center.
My Toyota Camry hybrid all sudden after 2 minutes of driving, had all of its warning lights on (like abs, engine. . . ) and with the vcs warning text across the dash board. It was very hard to control the vehicle to pull it off the road. I am not sue what is happening, but god forbid if this thing happened on the highway, I would have been in accident. The card was in no drivable and constituted a huge hazard. A car must never be allowed to lose power suddenly while driving. Scary experience and must be looked by the relevant authority to compel Toyota to investigate and may be recall those hybrids.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. While driving at 65 mph, the speedometer decreased to zero. In addition, the abs and parking warning lights illuminated. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the abs control module and the actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 102,337.
In March of 2015, while leaving my place of employment parking lot the floor mat apparently interfered with the accelerator pedal causing the car to speed up resulting in loss of control, hitting a fire hydrant head on. The car was totaled. After the car was totaled, I received a recall notice regarding this issue shortly afterwards. A letter from my insurance company indicated that I was not at fault at causing the accident but rather the accident was the result of one or more recalls with regard to braking concerns: in the letter my insurance company referenced a recall notice; NHTSA campaign number: 10v017000. I have contacted Toyota regarding this matter; however m requests have gone unanswered or have been ignored. When my car was totaled my insurance paid the fair market value to the lender which ended up creating a deficiency. I'm struggling try to pay for another vehicle as well as paying the deficiency.
I have noticed exceessive oil consumption since 2015 is 2016 and have gone through numerous repairs only to still have the same problem. The latest estimate is for an engine replacement because after all of this time one guy actually noticed that the oil was literally burning up right after he changed the oil. I have been stranded on the interstate at night with a toddler for hours, as well as not being able to start the car at times. I have also experienced my car randomly shaking and smoking in traffic, after which the check engine light would come on. My car has been stationary for weeks at a time, most recently this past week after I was unable to find out who could fix it and not keep ripping me off. To find out there was knowledge of this issue by Toyota and nothing was sent to me says a lot about how the lives of their customers, and/or their customer family and others on the road, are actually valued. The number of Camry's manufactured and sold to unknowingly trusting consumers is both shocking and scary.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. While making a right turn, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to respond causing the vehicle to crash into a fire hydrant and street sign. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 95,000.
Check engine warning light was on. When step on brake pedal, air came out underneath feet and car will not stop immediately. Have to slow down and put more pressure on brake pedal all the way down. It's scary to drive on. Asking the mechanic, he said that was the brake booster pump problem.
The contact owns a 2008 Toyota Camry. While driving approximately 35 mph, the abs and brake warning indicators illuminated, and the speedometer malfunctioned. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle, but the indicators were still illuminated. The failure occurred multiple times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 43,000.
I was slowing to a stop at a red light. The warning light check vsc came on. The brakes were very weak and did not stop the car. I had to escape on to the shoulder and have the car slow down.
The warning lights went on and immediate the vechile shut down while I was travelling a city street in san francisco, California (dewey blvd). Fortunately the street is fairly level and I wasn't on a hill. I loss power to the brake, steering and everything as everything was dead. I was able to coast to a curb putting all my effort to stop the car. I tried starting and moved about 10 feet before everything went dead again. I did not move it further I called for a tow (aaa) and the initial diagnosis was that the alternator was dead. The car was towed to a mechanic who also said that this alternator was dead and it was replaced. I told him where it happened and he said I was lucky that I wasn't on the freeway.
Check vsc system warning and brake and other warning lights lighting up on dashboard. Difficulty braking with lurching forward when at a complete stop. Needed to pump on brakes several times to come to a complete stop, loss of braking ability.
12/28/13 - elsrode Ave. Baltimore, MD 21214, side street next to our house. Kathleen waldt, wife, was parallel parking this vehicle driving in reverse. Vehicle had unintended acceleration. Brakes did not work. Vehicle went up a set of cement steps and stopped for a second, but then accelerated in drive down steps into street. Again brakes did not work. Kathleen waldt drove vehicle into an alley and hit a stone wall where it stopped. Engine was smoking. In reverse and in drive, mrs waldt had her feet on the brakes. The brakes did not work. This was witnessed by her son, alexander, who was the front seat passenger. Ms. Waldt suffered fractured ribs and bruised legs. Passenger, alexander waldt, was not injured. Vehicle was totaled by insurance company. Toyota inspected vehicle on 2/24/14 who said " based on our inspection of your vehicle it was determined that it was not the result of any type of manufacturing or design defect".
Going down the straight part of a steep hill just prior to a curve, went to use the brakes but they didn't respond. Car kept speeding up so I kept foot on the brakes and attempted to turn the wheel to the right for the curve, but car wouldn't slow down so I kept brake pressed down and ended up crashing into a curb and tree.
When applying the brakes at highway speeds (more than 50 mph), the car violently shakes. The car's brakes were replaced and the rotors turned twice since first incident. I've been running this car this way for more than 40k miles since first incident. I am not the only one having this brake and warped rotor problem according to the internet.
My brakes needed replacing at approx. 40-44k miles. My belts/water pump broke/cracked at approx 50k miles. The mechanic said the water pump, if it ever broke at all, shouldn't break till min. 100k miles. I am about to take the Camry to a mechanic to check engine racing and grinding front passenger side window motor. This car has been a money pit with awful visibility. I've spent many thousands on this car before it reach 50k miles.
2008 Toyota Camry. Consumer writes in regards to all four tires rims(wheels) rusting the consumer also stated the accelerator peal would stick at times and the brakes would lock up.
Sudden acceleration and brake problems.
Driven on e. Fordham road in the bronx, NY the vehicle in front has a sadden stop, I push the brake and no respond on time, so I hit the vehicle in front of me and the air bag no deployed.
11 days ago the marina Toyota dealership performed both Toyota recall repairs on my 2008 Camry. On March 10, around 0519 am, I was starting to park my car at the gym. I applied the brakes to slow into the parking stall. The moment that I applied the brakes; the engine started to race; the car lurched forward; the brakes were useless in stopping the vehicle; and I could not steer the vehicle. My vehicle slammed into a parked Jeep cheroke; the Jeep inturn collided with a parked Subaru outback. My vehicle was towed to the dealership and we are waiting for Toyota's technicians to examine the car. I am very thankful to god that no one was injured or killed in this incident. However, I firmly believe that my Camry is unsafe and I will never drive it again. I have written the vehicle off as a total loss. Since I am a jehova witness, I cannot sell the vehicle because then I would be blood-guilty if anyone was injured or killed by the vehicle. I am a electrical engineer with a masters degree in electronics and control systems. I have 32 years experience in systematically solving electrical problems (particularly intermittent electrical issues). In my case, given the simultaneous failure of multiple systems (engine rpm control, braking and steering), the cause is definitely electrical , not mechanical. My experience with computer controls strongly suggests that the key hardware involved is the on-board cpu. Therefore, in my professional engineering opinion, Toyota has not determined the root cause of the sudden acceleration problem.
