Camera / radar component - yes camera / radar unit is available when it failed, the dash lit up with lots of errors: engine check light, anti-skid failure light (even though the system was turned off), rotating errors included: secondary brake system malfunction, pre-collission system malfunction, lda system malfunction, check engine. I was driving up a 6% hill on a four lane road at 65 mph with the cruise control active. Was in the left lane passing two slower trucks when the engine just seem to die and the dash lit up with lots of errors. By the time I was able to get to the right lane and off the freeway, I was doing less than 20 mph. It turns out that when the radar / camera unit failed, the computer put copious confusing errors and put the engine in limp mode. Very dangerous and I'm lucky there wasn't more traffic. When the computer detected the failure should have automatically disabled the cruise control and put out an error message saying it was now disabled. The other junk errors just confused everything. The computer definitely should not have put the engine in limp mode. It was only after I pulled over and had time to digest the errors that I actually figured out what had happened and how to handle the situation. After I pulled off, the center display which had been saying there was a message that would display after I was safely stopped, now had an message indicating I should turn off the cruise control. Problem was I could not determine if the cruise control was active or not because the indicator was blocked by errors, however the engine was still definitely in limp mode. I finally turned the engine off and back on to make sure the cruise control was off. All the rotating errors and error lights were still on, but the engine was now out of limp mode and the car was again drivable.
First time it was the middle of the night I was leaving a party and the car cut off in the middle of the street in the intersection. I had to wait for hours for the car to start back up … a couple weeks later the car cut off 2 on the highway going 70/80 and I told the man at the car lot about it the first time it happen which wasn’t even a week of me having the car he said he didn’t care and what did I want him to do about it … even tho he sold me a dangerous car . The car almost caused me to be in a wreck steering wheel locked up all the times and I had a hard time pulling out of the fast lane to safety almost got hit a few times .
Forward facing radar system malfunction. If vehicle is parked in the sun and windshield is hot the forward facing radar is overheated and when you start the vehicle the safety system fail to boot up. If this isn't enough of a safety concern the error messages obstruct your instrument cluster screen so you can not see important things like your speedometer. You can cancel the warning but with in a few seconds it reappears and obstructs your view. Vehicle was taken to dealership. There are no recalls or safety bulletins on it from Toyota corp and no known fix. This problem did not exist until Toyota moved forward radar from grill area and placed it inside windshield top center. If I manually cool the area with cold water or prolonged fan blowing on the area I can restart and safety system boots up fine. This continually happens over several years, and yet still no recall. Several discussions on Toyota's forum about this exact issue. Yet neither Toyota or NHTSA are addressing it. Lets recall and fix this before someone dies as a result of the safety system malfunction or the warning message obstructing the instrument cluster.
If vehicle is parked in sun the front facing camera and laser located at the top of the windshield overheat then when the vehicle is started the overheated front facing camera is offline so the collision, lane depart/assist and auto dimming system will not boot so those safety features are offline and your screen with your instrument cluster is obstructed by warning messages. If you park in the shade or cool the top of your windshield with water prior to starting the processes boot normally and your safety systems are available. Problem is reoccurring if vehicle is parked in the sun.
I have owned 5 Toyotas and a Lexus SUV and never had so many problems. This is a 2020 Camry hybrid with only 20492 miles on it. It has had to be jump-started 3-4 times so far, but now it has a new issue: while on a road trip with my wife thru utah, the car suddenly shuts down, bells ringing and messages appearing. Cruise control, lane departure, and headlight system failure. This happened on a 2-lane highway with very minimal shoulder. I pulled over as far as I could, but still slightly in the lane. Turned off the ignition and after a minute or so, was able to restart the car. Noted that the sign on the road said "next services 129 miles"! this was on July 11, 2022 at about 3 pm. Once car was restarted, we drove to our destination without further issues, however I would not use cruise control for fear it would happen again. Got back to California the next day and took it to dealer to investigate the cause. Their conclusion: "extreme heat caused the warning lights to come on, but history code indicates that the issue resolved itself. The vehicle is operating normally at this time but the system will be affected by high temperatures and direct sunlight"!!! the temperature on the road at the time was 95 degrees. Dealer contacted Toyota's technical assistance hot line to document concern case #221930394. Per the service department, they called the field rep who said if everything was functioning at this time, then there was no action to be taken. First of all, I am 75 years old and do not expect this from a car with only 20492 miles on it, and especially not from a Toyota. I find the "solution" to be completely foolish - avoid high temperatures and direct sunlight!! temperatures over 95 degrees and direct sunlight are common in many states. Can someone please get to the bottom of this? I am beginning to think that I bought a lemon. I am also reporting it to NHTSA, as it is a safety issue that must be dealt with. Thank you,.
Car is regularly maintained, vehicle had to be what was a software or fuel supply issue. In hotter weather car stutters and engine will completely shut off while driving. It will begin to throw errors for second brake system malfunction, check engine, lane departure assist. Codes from obd2 read p12d5 and p107d. Seems like fuel stops is being cut off or extreme software issue. Regardless it has left my pregnant wife and 3 yr old son stranded in the middle of the road in 100 degree plus weather or then runs extremely rough. Have gone to a mechanic twice each time engine codes had shut off and there was nothing to be done at the moment. Issue still persists, it is still a danger and often it is difficult to have enough momentum to pull over somewhere safe. This issue may also cause further engine problems.
