Two problems related to engine exhaust system have been reported for the 2000 Toyota Celica. The most recently reported issues are listed below. Please also check out the statistics and reliability analysis of the 2000 Toyota Celica based on all problems reported for the 2000 Celica.
Car has 140,000 miles on it, and is burning approximately 1 quart of oil every four days. Black smoke coming from exhaust. Found several other people online with the same car (2000-2002 Celica gt 1. 8l) with the same problem. Problems were noticed as early as 80,000 miles. No visible oil leaks. Found information online regarding a fix that Toyota made to the engine in 2003 from 4 holes in pistons, to 8 holes as well as larger piston grove.
Toyota dealer diagnosed an oil consumption problem and smoke bellowing out of the exhaust. They found oil gelling in the valve cover and spark plugs contaminated. We received a printed document from Toyota stating repairs needed and sent the car out for repairs. We were able to take pictures of the whole procedure and have receipts/documentation to prove. We replaced everything that Toyota recommended. We drove the car and two days later smoke began bellowing out of the exhaust and the spark plugs were becoming sooty. We believe we have the defective 1zz-fed engine that has plagued Toyota with oil consumption and sludge issues. We have a Toyota warranty that ends July of 2007 and Toyota will not warranty the issue.
