2001 Toyota Celica gts. While driving on the freeway I engaged the cruise control. When I tried to disenage the cruise control by stepping on the break pedal the car started accelerating out of control. I tried turning off the cruise control with the switch but the car kept accelerating. I had to slam on the breaks, put the car in neutral and turn the engine off to stop the car. When I turned the engine back on it rev'd up and almost pegged out the rpm gauge. I had to turn the engine on and off several times to get the cruise control to disengage.

I was told by Toyota that the cruise control is directly related to the throttle body on the 03 Celica . Nothing has been done to correct the cruise control.

The idle control valve is defectively designed; it gets clogged, making my car stall repeatedly when it is cold. It has had to be replaced about once a year. Last year they told me the part had been redesigned and I wouldn't have any more trouble. This year they admitted it is unfixable (except by replacement each year). Toyota refuses to provide a lifetime warranty for the defectively designed part. I think they should either cover the part for the life of the car, or buy the damn thing back.

Transmission is too easy to shift into wrong gears. Same four valves have been bent twice, once as a result of clutch sticking to floor causing a mis-shift. Cruise control disengages after a few minutes of use causing the car to slow down abruptly.

The transmission is too easy to shift from 5th into 2nd and I almost blew the engine. This problem is known by Toyota but they are not willing to fix the problem. As for the cruise control, every 2000 Celica has the same problem. The cruise control slows down without warning up to 20mph. With no brake lights activated to indicate deceleration of the car an accident could easily happen.
Cruise control will momentarily disengage after about 20 minutes of use causing the car speed to suddenly decrease. The speed wil then level out and very slowly increase back to the original level. This contimues to happen intermitently.
Idle control valve gets clogged up, making it difficult to start. Idle control valve was replaced twice, but problem continues. Dealer claims this problem appera in the 1996 and 1997 models.
