1 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2020

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that the vehicle independently accelerated while driving at an undisclosed speed, without warning. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed nor repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 80,000.

2 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/13/2018

I was notified of the air bag recall a year ago but the car dealerships in my area does not have the parts and I need to use my vehicle daily. So I am not sure what to do from here for that but I believe that the appropriate time to remedy this recall has past already and the fact that we have our children riding with us and we are unaware that their life is in danger or because we can not get it fixed is not acceptable. Then on top of that I am having issues like when my 2011 Corolla is sitting idle it will rev up the engine without touching the gas pedal and does this randomly and without warning and also while I am driving around 55 mph on the interstate or highway sometimes it will dramatically drop and lose about 10- 15 mph speed for no reason and this happens randomly as well. And this fluctuation happens during cruise control the most so I no longer even use that function. Also both headlights have moisture in them and are so fogged up now that visibility is almost impossible at night now. Also the weather striping around all my windows have dry rotted and broke off and there is practically nothing left of stripping anymore. Then the center dash above the radio just broke and gave out under my phone holder while driving, it broke into about 15 different pieces. I know that my phone or the holder is even close to heavy enough to cause the dash panel to cave in like that. I called to get a price on the dash and it was like $250+ and who can afford that for a piece of plastic. Lastly my driver and passenger seat will get stuck if you try adjusting them and sometimes it will let you move the seat but to do so you have to hop up and down for several minutes and throughout the adjustment to get the seat to move in any direction.

3 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2016

Car was steering on its own and also the speed was being controlled along with electrical issues.

4 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2016

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that after attempting to apply the brake pedal to shift the gear, the vehicle accelerated to approximately 18 mph in reverse without warning. The vehicle crashed into a building. The air bags did not deploy. The vehicle was towed and a police report was filed. The contact did not receive any injuries. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the body was damaged and needed to be repaired. The contact stated the dealer did not provide an explanation as to why the vehicle accelerated without warning. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

5 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2015

I drive quite a bit and normally know my vehicles pretty good. I have recently obtained this 2011 Toyota Corolla s and it is in great condition overall. I made a trip 2 days after getting the vehicle and immediately noticed a hesitation between 55-65 mph. The first time it was approximately 11am in the morning at 78f. Driving on a flat well maintained black top road the vehicle does in fact have a constant hesitation that drops approximately 1000-2000 rpms with a noticeable feel in the vehicle. Immediately (3-4 sec) after the hesitation the vehicle recovers back to the original rpm. As long as staying in this speed range (55-65 mph) the vehicle has the hesitation repeatedly. The second issue that I have noticed on the same vehicle is the actual deceleration when removing my foot from accelerator. When traveling on the same road and time as stated above the vehicle seems to really coast right along or so it seems. When saying this, I removed my foot from accelerator and the vehicle rolls right along as if I am still pushing the accelerator at which time I must apply the brake more significantly than letting it just coast. I would like to know how this is effecting my gas mileage, is it going to cause undue strain on the drivetrain, is this going to be a problematic issue that Toyota is going to continue to ignore?.

6 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2015

I'm a 52 year old male driver and the car is a 2011 Toyota Corolla automatic drive. The temperature was 4 degrees fahrenheit. I accelerated from a stop turning left on to a rural route heading west. The accelerator dropped to the floor going far beyond where I pushed it with my foot. I had to stomp the brake so it would release the accelerator as it already accelerated beyond safe speeds. The accelerator wasn't stuck in a floor mat as it released when I stomped the brake. The 2011 Corolla often exhibits an auto-pilot feeling on a flat stretch of road or going downhill at which you can remove your foot from the accelerator and it will maintain that speed for another mile or so rather than decelerating. During this time, the brake stiffens and there seems to be a strong upward force on your foot as you try to depress the brake pedal. Depressing the brake pedal doesn't decelerate the vehicle very much. It appears to try to continue the speed the auto-pilot chose. When the auto-pilot isn't experience, the brake pedal is normal and goes down when depressed as you would expect. I have tried to downshift to force deceleration as well but shifting into third does not reset the auto-pilot. Shifting into second might release the auto-pilot but I believe that is dangerous to the occupants and harmful to the transmission so I have not tried shifting into second. I'm quite concern that this will lead to an accident. Noticing on other internet sites that people have claimed this was an issue with their 2011 Corolla, I thought I should add my experience in hopes to see a recall.

7 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 01/12/2015

I was getting out a parking in reverse, suddenly the car acelerated without control crashing with the car was behind in the other extreme in the parking. Damages:1-bumper, right and left of the rear sides of my car 2-back, front, and sides of the car which my car stopped.

8 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/30/2014

I was going to an atm at about 8 mph when the car accelerated and I was not able to stop it by pressing the brake. The car jumped a curb, went through a hedge to a field, up a hill, heading at 90 degrees to a four lane highway. I managed to steer the car to go parallel to the highway when the car reached the highway curb. The car then stopped. Three tires were blown and the car incurred body damage.

9 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/19/2014

On April 19th, 2014, at about 1:30 pm, myself and my wife left our friend's home in los altos hills, CA. As we left the driveway at about 5 mph on baker ln, the car went into a sudden, uncontrollable acceleration mode, reaching speeds 50 - 60 mph. Within about 1000 - 1500 ft we approached a the intersection of baker ln and purissima rd. , all the while desperately trying to press the brake, applying hand brake and shifting to neutral. Against this sudden burst of acceleration, the car went off the road at that intersection, and fell into a ditch and stopped by a tree trunk. Both of us were injured with multiple internal/ external fractures, but we were conscious; my wife in the passenger seat had more grievous injuries, including an open wound of broken bone in ankle and severe spinal cord injuries, and was screaming with pain. Once I collected myself, I called 911 and the fd/ paramedics responded and we were hauled from the ditch by cutting open the car doors. We were transported to stanford medical center in palo alto, after which we were shifted to our hmo, after about 10 days in icu. I am now discharged and rehabilitating/ getting physical therapy at home, while my wife is still at a rehab center, over 10 weeks after the accident. At the time of the accident, the weather, visibility and road conditions were excellent; both of us had our seat belts firmly in place; no cell phone was being used; I had my foot on the brake and off the accelerator all the time; air bags deployed as expected. Since both of us were critically injured, we could not initiate/ pursue any legal action against Toyota and surrendered the vehicle (which was totaled) to my insurer, farmers. We strongly feel that Toyota is fully responsible for the defective acceleration system and causing serious bodily injury and mental trauma for both of us. We should be compensated by Toyota.

10 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2014

Tl-the contact owns a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while stopped at a red light with brakes depressed, the vehicle un-intendedly accelerated. The contact stated while pressing on brakes, the vehicle accelerated more. The contact put the vehicle in park and it accelerated more. The vehicle had to be put in neutral and turned off for the acceleration to stop. The dealer was made aware of the failure where the contact was told the failure could not be recreated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 35000. Mc.

11 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2014

I came to an intersection and stopped, then took my foot off the brake before noticing that the light was still red. The other vehicle was roughly 30 feet away when I pushed on the brakes. I should have easily been able to stop. Brakes did not engage and I had been pushing them so hard and for so long that I fractured my ankle. There were not even skid marks at the accident scene. My car had front end frame damage from the accident (totaled), and the airbags never deployed. Additionally, in the past I had noticed the rpms rising for no reason while car was idling, and the acceleration issue, where the vehicle seemed to “hang” between speeds of about 35 and 40 and 60 and 65mph. The rpms I only noticed once-so I did not report it, and the “hanging” was my own ignorance (I haven’t had a 4 cylinder in a long time and this was my first—and probably last—Toyota). I also had prior braking concerns-- abs only made a noise (did not vibrate against pedal--again, my ignorance of how this vehicle was supposed to respond) and it was a very icy winter, so I assumed that I had been trying to stop on ice. The brakes behaved fine if I physically pumped them, but sudden stops could not be made.

12 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2013

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that after parking the vehicle, he heard a popping noise as the vehicle accelerated independently and crashed against a parked vehicle. The contact was able to stop the vehicle by engaging the emergency brake and removing the key from the ignition. There were no injuries were reported and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer however, the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 65,200.

13 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2013

Vehicle fails to start. Found codes p0606 (ecm/pcm processor error) and p0303 (random misfire) on obd 2 computer. Vehicle towed to Toyota dealership where they cleaned spark plugs and cylinders due to engine flooding. Upon return of vehicle drove it home were it sputtered on the drive (afraid vehicle would shut down during drive). Ran obd 2 tester on it again and found a Toyota code p1604 ecm error. Returned to dealership were they did test on fuel samples and had the car for a couple of days. Computer was deemed faulty and replaced by Toyota. Toyota replaced original computer under manufactures warranty. Have had the car for two days after new computer and 5 new codes are on under readiness codes. P0606 (ecm/pcm processor error), p0303 (random misfire), p0171 (system too lean bank 1), p0172 (system too rich (bank 1), and p0125 (insufficient collanbd temp for closed loop fuel control). Car continues to idle and rev uncontrollably while driving. Concerned vehicle may shut off while driving and or not start.

14 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while engaging the brake pedal, the vehicle would accelerate forward. The contact indicated that the failure recurred on multiple occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 15,000.

15 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2012

I purchased this car as a new vehicle. Ever since I have had it there has always been an acceleration issue to where it does not slow down for several seconds after releasing your foot from the gas. It accelerates often to where you have to apply the brakes firmly to where the anti lock then kicks in. During servicing it has been brought to the attention of the dealership but they have continued to say that there is not an issue. I have had other family members operate my vehicle to verify that this issue is in fact an issue and they experienced the same situation. This is very dangerous and will end up costing someone their life due to the manufacturers dragging their feet on addressing the issue.

16 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2011

This is a new car purchase (w/200 mi). At 60-75 mph (and noticeable also at slower speeds on other roads) on the freeway the car's steering wanders all over the road, it cannot stay on a straight line even if the steering wheel is not moved. Trucks passing by do not appear to greatly effect steering. Wind was not an issue. This, not a looseness but rather inaccurate steering, causes a wandering which is very dangerous as the car will wander into another lane or off the road into a potentia crash. The driver is 57, with 200-300k miles driving experience in mercedes to BMW to volvos to gm to other Toyotas to Ford cars - w/o an accident. This is a real and serious problem which may cause deaths. There appears to be little control between the steering wheel and the steering. The tires have the proper air pressure (goodyear). I repeat, this is the most dangerous new car I have driven since 1968. That's problem #1. Problem #2, a lesser problem but also ridiculous. . Is the accelerator pedal. You cannot keep the speed constant at 45-50 mph. Holding the accelerator steady the engine speed, as shown in the tachometer ,wildly jumps up and down at will, intermittantly, rpm going from 1600 to 2200. If you hold steady it drops to 1600, if you then depress the pedal the smallest possine about, it jumps to 2200, then back to 1600. Other times the same action works as you would expect a linear press on the accelerator would command a linear increase in speed. The engine/transmission speed control is all over the place with no feedback to the driver. Look. . . I have examined this on empty roads. It's the most ridicululous control system I have ever used. It's not acceptable and it's potentially dangerous. I cannot believe it would pass safety standards> please correct these 2 issues before deaths occur. I will swear to this.

17 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 08/29/2011

Approx. A week after this vehicle was purchased it was involved in a crash on 08/29/2011. This vehicle was crashed due to an higher than usual rev which delays the time for a vehicle to come to a stop. The rev on this vehicle does not decline sometimes when releasing the accelerator. The vehicle came with Toyota car so I have went to the Toyota dealership many times to have a multi point inspection and they said everything was perfectly fine. They were unable to "duplicate" the issue. Feeling like there is nothing I could do I gave up and just continued to drive it with extra caution and make payments on my lease till the term was over. About a year later at 11,000 on my recent service visit the Toyota mechanic told me I needed new brakes. He stated that this was unusual at this mileage and brakes should be fine, but on my car the brakes were completely gone. Now I have about 12,800 miles, and the engine revving is starting to interfere with my ability to control the speed of my vehicle. The excessive engine rev is the culprit that causes my brakes being used heavily. After I release the accelerator the car continues to accelerate and the brake has to work extra hard to stop the car. I have contacted south east Toyota finance and they just empathized with my situation. When I went to the dealership the mechanic took three hours to look at the car and referred me to a sales representative who tried to sell me a new 2013 Toyota Corolla to resolve the issue. I refused to buy a new car and left the dealership. I am not an mechanic but I suspect it has something to do with the computer that controlling the speed, which is causing my speed to not decrease. This causes the brakes to take an extra load and causes first and second gear to conflict at times. This issue is getting worse as times goes by.

18 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2011

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The contact was traveling 15 mph when the vehicle decelerated independently as the accelerator pedal was being depressed. The contact also confirmed that the vehicle accelerated when the brakes were depressed and the key was hot while in the ignition. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 28 and the current mileage was 20,000.

19 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2011

I purchased a new 2011 Toyota Corolla, and immediately noticed an issue with vehicle speed control. The vehicle maintains speed/rpm even after removing your foot from the accelerator. The issue is most visible when the car is travelling in excess of 40 mph and the transmission is in the highest gear. According to the dealer this is expected behavior. In my view it is a significant safety issue since the car does now slow down. This issue is not sporadic, but rather persistent. . . It always behaves this way.

20 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/04/2011

I purchased my 2011 Toyota s model on July 4th 2011. On the drive home I noticed a dragging feeling but thought maybe it was me at first getting used to the car. But on a daily basis the car would randomly pull back, so I started to pay attention and noticed that pretty randomly but mostly between 40 -60 mph the car rpm's would drop anywhere between 200-600 rpm's (quick jump down) and then back up causing the car to drag as if the brake was applied. This is going on a level road at a constant speed - this is not normal an doesn't feel safe. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't find the problem (surprise, surprise)! I told them there was definitely a problem and I didn't feel comfortable driving my kids around in it. They asked me to come back and test drive with the technician which I did. The tech noticed and felt the problem- they kept the car for about 1 week and called me back and said Toyota knows of this problem and is diligently working on it that it had something to do with a flash drive but that Toyota was being evasive on their answers. I called the dealer back about 2 weeks later and they did not respond to me. This car is so annoying to drive and doesn't feel safe at all. I called Toyota corporate and filed another claim and was told I would be contacted in 48 hours- this did not happen. I am very frustrated, there is obviously a problem here and I have never driven a car that does this. I owned a Corolla dx before and I loved that car but I bought it in 1993. This problem has to get fixed, if they know about it what could be taking so long to come up with solution. Are they going to wait until someone is killed (I. E. The prius situation surging forward)? not acceptable!.

21 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2011

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The contact stated that while driving approximately 40-60 mph and releasing, the accelerator pedal was release but the vehicle did not decrease in speed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where they advised him that the vehicle was performing in that manner for economical reasons. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 200.

22 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

Around 250-300 miles I went over a dip in the road at about 40 mph and went to hit the brakes while taking a turn that was approaching a stoplight when the brakes would not let me push them down and would give me feedback as if abs was active. After a couple seconds I was able to reapply pressure to the brakes to stop. This happened a total of eight times in 2,100 miles. The car has been in some close calls, and all the incidents happened after hitting a dip while trying to reduce my speed from over 50 mph to the time of hitting the dips. It feels like abs is activating, and in turn not allowing me to apply pressure to the brakes. Another incident happened as I was going down the freeway approaching traffic and I went over a dip on the freeway and the brakes would not allow me to stop for about a couple of seconds. I regained brakes with enough time to make a stop, but I would say it was a safe stop. I had another incident where the brakes failed as I was exiting a freeway and I would not apply my brakes for the first turn, and I could only apply pressure to the brakes after I started to enter the second turn coming within inches of colliding the car in front of me. These near accidents were enough for me to report it to Toyota. After bringing it to Toyota, they tested the car for 15 miles and told me it was functioning as it was engineered to. I am positive that this car is not safe to drive. I bought it on 5/23/11 with 10 miles on it, and drove it a total of 2,150 miles.

23 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 06/03/2011

The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Corolla. The contact was driving 25 mph when the vehicle speed increased and decreased independently. When the speed of the vehicle independently decrease, the accelerator pedal would become harder to depress. The vehicle was to the dealer who inspected and tested the failure but was unable to duplicate or diagnose the failure. The representative was sent by the manufacturer to further inspect the vehicle but the representative was also unable to duplicate or diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was contacted once again and stated that they would send a second representative to inspect the failure. The failure mileage was 875.

24 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2011

Well the accident hasn't happened yet, but it could be right around the corner if the dealership doesn't fix this. When I let off the gas at speeds between 40-60 mph. It seems as thought the cruise is on. The car does not decelerate normally. If there is a slight slope down it even picks up speed, I have to slam the break really heard to slow down the car its really scary when I go down hill. It's still getting fuel even though you don't have your foot on the pedal. It can take a few min or several miles before it kicks off the gas and acts normally. I buy this car brand new in April 2011 since then every time I went for service I told the dealership about the problem I got reply ¿its normal if this is normal then what is abnormal. Right now on my car I have 34000 miles. So please make it as recall and fix the problem as soon as possible.

25 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/31/2011

I picked up this new lease car March 8, 2011 & noticed this issue at the end of March with about 50 miles on the odometer; car now has 1000 miles on the odometer. . I noticed that always around 40 mph the engine almost stops as if I were driving standard shift (which I am not) & someone downshifted into another gear, or if the speed control was on (never use it) & it came out of the set speed. . The first time it happened I kind of ignored it but then when it happened again. I stopped at the dealer gettel Toyota where I picked up this lease car & the person in the service department told me "not to worry about it that the vehicle was getting used to my driving habits & that if something were wrong engine/dash lights would go on" (pp). . So I went my way keeping his words in mind. . This problem still exists with 1000 miles on the odometer & while I was concerned about it I didn't raise any red flags until now I see I am not the only Toyota Corolla owner having this issue which leads me to think its another "Toyota design flaw". . I learned that term "design flaw" from Toyota when I had my 2007 Corolla & filed many lemon law complaints on it & Toyota would repeat those words in their responses since Toyota doesn't participate in lemon law negotiations they told me. . I have been leasing cars since 2002 & this is my second Toyota lease which I wasn't going to do again since I had so many problems with my 2007 Corolla but I liked the design of the newer model & couldn't beat the deal Toyota kept giving me to take another car from them. . Now that I am reading about other owners having this same issue of the speed deceleration I am concerned that there may be a "design flaw" with the transmission or engine mechanics. . Although this doesn't happen all of the time it does consistently happen at 40 mph & is quite noticeable since the car almost jerks forward when it occurs. The consumer was informed Toyota is aware of the issue. Updated 10/18/11.

26 Vehicle Speed Control problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2011

When car hits bumps frame on car makes a noise . Also you can see it give or move. Car has a tough ride to it for a le model. Bottom of seat on car is to short. Brake pedal and accelerator pedal is to far to the right it needs to be alittle more to left also their to close together. Makes seat bottom to the right (needs to be straighter)to match pedals. I think dashboard is to low. The body noises happen more with one person in the car. Also on hot days and very cold days dash has a crack sound to it. The car is quieter on rainy days like a normal car.
