Toyota FJ Cruiser owners have reported 204 problems related to body (under the structure category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Toyota FJ Cruiser based on all problems reported for the FJ Cruiser.
Recently purchased used from dealership. Excessive rust on lower frame and other components (transmission and power steering lines) as well as suspension. This is not a flood vehicle. Initially took it to Toyota for repairs of the lines and trans. The quote was too high, so I took it to local shops for repair. The local shops were surprised by the amount of rust. Trans was fixed but the shops refused to fix other components that attached to the frame because they fear they will cause more damage. Visited several Fj Cruiser forums and frame rust issues are incredibly common with the fj, to the point where there are class action lawsuits. Toyota needs to step up and fix this issue for fj owners!.

The back portion of the frame is completely rusted out, has a rot hole, and cracked. It is the same problem that has been happening to similar year model tacomas, sequoias, and tundras. The Fj Cruiser now needs to be included in this recall for rusty frame issues. I'm not even in a rust belt state. I'm in florida. A rear end accident could cause the whole vehicle to collapse and make kill passengers in the back seats. Tons of other complaints filed here. There's a facebook group "fj cruiser rusted frame owners unite". Vehicle has been inspected by insurance for repairs, may just get totaled out as of this writing. No warning symbols or lights.
While inspecting a broken rear fuel tank strap, several holes were noticed in the frame of the vehicle. Excessive corrosion was present all along the welds on the frame and its crossmembers. There were spots where I could poke my finger through the frame. There was no warning that this corrosion was happening. I am the third owner of this fj and it was inspected before I purchased it. The vehicle has not yet been taken to a dealership, police or an insurance company.

Excessive rust on frame components from inside frame rails. Failure of suspension mounting points at the rear axel. Failure of the rear cross member and hitch due all due to excess rust.
Notable frame rust and corrosion. Available for inspection upon request. Safety risk if any parts of frame are rusted through and vehicle has no structural support. Confirmed by independent service center. Inspected during each Toyota service, including one done in March 2021 prior to purchasing vehicle. Documentation does not mention frame/structural rust anywhere. Initial photographs of frame rust done prior to first oil change in July 2021. Was told it was just surface rust and could be "sanded down" and it would be good as new. No warning messages.

The frame on my vehicle is incredibly rusty. Upon further research, I've found that this is a chronic problem Fj Cruisers. Many frames have rusted to the point where there is structural damage thereby rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive. I know that Toyota issued a recall for tacoma trucks for this very issue, and I would like to have a recall issued for the fj as I'm incredibly concerned for my safety.

Frame structural rust/ fuel tank strap rust on going problem with this one and many others.
Too much frame rust on vehicle. Rust seems to be most prevalent around welds where cross members meet the frame. This frame is the same frame used for a number of other Toyota vehicles. In some places the rust is nearly bad enough for crucial body members to separate which would cause a severe accident. The frame on the Toyota Fj Cruiser is the same frame used in the vehicles outlined in the successful class action lawsuit, "brian warner et al. V. Toyota motor sales, u. S. A. , inc. " in the united states district court for the central district of California case no. 2:15-cv-02171-fmo-ffm. That lawsuit only specified Toyota tacoma, tundra, and sequoia vehicles though the frames are the exact same. My frame is still under warranty.

Rust! frame rust!.
Extreme frame rust.
Due to rust on my 2007 Fj Cruiser, I've had many unexpected expenses. I first was losing brake pressure and my brake lines had to be replaced after breaking when in a mechanic's shop. I've also replaced all four calipers, all the rusted pulleys on the engine, lower control arms that were so rusted that they had to be cut out, and hub assemblies for both front wheels. The hub assembly lead to a failed vehicle inspection for safety concerns. The exhaust pipe literally broke apart near the rear frame crossmember and was sitting on it, so had to be replaced. The exhaust manifold rusted apart and separated from the engine block, leading to dangerous fumes in the engine bay and horrible gas mileage. The O2 sensors were rusted in place and giving poor readings and had to be replaced. Turning the steering wheel became difficult and that was due to being extremely rusty, so it had to be replaced. Shifter cable and prndl switch had to be replaced due to not shifting into drive or lower gears. The front differential drain plug was so rusted that the dealership would not attempt to remove it. Now there are holes rusted through the body mount brackets, as well as the passenger side floor. The cargo area's floor where the charcoal evap canister connects to the vehicle has completely rusted through, and one of the subframe brackets rusted so badly that it was taken off by hand. Both subframe brackets need to be replaced. The rear control arm mounts are very thin due to extreme rust. My mechanic is now replacing coolant lines because they have rusted through and started to leak, and gas tank straps which were on the verge of failing.
Rear cross member rusted completely through to the point of almost ripping off during towing. The remainder of the frame has excessive rust/corrosion that is not present on other vehicles of the same year.
Frame is rotting away and structural support is no longer there.
The frame on my 2007 Fj Cruiser is rusting very badly. There are large holes in my frame and I have had one of my rear sway bars rust all the way off. I feel like at any moment my car could just fall apart and cause me to wreck.
2007 Toyota Fj Cruiser has the same rot problems as the tacoma and sequoia. . . There are reports all over the USA and Toyota has still not issued a recall on rotting frames. I can't even have my vehicle towed it is so decomposed. I am fortunate not to have been killed. I contacted Toyota and they want me to call them? how about keeping this information in writing maybe for a future lawsuit.
My 07 fj has only 104k miles on it. My mechanic told me it is not safe to drive do to the under body rusting and falling apart. I have spend a lot of time and money up keeping my fj. I now will have to get the complete rear axel and other components replaced before I can drive it again. Something needs to be done to fix these issues. It's complete negligence that this takes place to so many of these vehicles. I'm just thankful I got it to my mechanic before something happened to the fj with my 4 1/2 & 1 1/2 year old inside. Please make this right.
I own a 2007 Fj Cruiser with very low mileage (below 80,000). It has a terrible carriage rust problem. I thought I'd had it remediated, finally, after endlessly searching for someone to address it. Dry ice treatment and undercoating were applied recently. I replaced the wheels and tires, as well. All seemed well and it passed inspection. But, then the power steering started stiffening. So I had that attended to. The mechanic then told me the rack and pinion and a plethora of other issues were happening due to rust and corrosion - at an additional $$$$$$ cost. So far, this summer, I have spent close to $5,000 to resurrect this vehicle. I can't afford to invest anymore or justify doing so. I am looking to sell. But first I am investigating the fj class-action against Toyota. I understand this class-action was denied in part last year in California. I plan to check any legal status that might still exist. My hope is that Toyota will acknowledge the problem with the fjs, recall and fix the problem or at least reimburse me all my repair/remediation expenses. I know they won't do anything unless there is a lot of pressure and outcry to do so. Although, my fj spent the first 16 years of its life in NJ (which many claim is the cause and of course is plausible - I don't disagree but not to this degree), it was not driven that much, garaged and well cared for. I did not really notice the rust issue until January 2021 when I took it to the local Toyota dealership. I think I was taking it there for an oil change. They were surprised that I'd driven it there because the brakes were so bad. I had it towed home and spent the next many months searching for someone to fix it. No one wanted to touch it until this summer 2023. The gentleman who dry iced and coated informed me about the lawsuit. I never received any kind of notice (thus far) from Toyota about any recall. So now I am garnering information and investigating the best I can. My fj looks brand new except for frame corro.
Fuel tank strap rusted through, almost lost my fuel tank. I have since replaced it at the dealership. The frame is has also developed rust issues.
Our 2007n Toyota fj only has 135, 000 miles on it and runs well. We love the vehicle and have a severely rusted out frame. The truck has been adequately maintained but is now unsafe to drive. There are several large areas of rusted frame that are gone, motor mounts have fallen off the frame, the rear axle is barely hanging on because the rear frame is brittle. On the passenger side almost 3 feet of frame is gone from the underside of the vehicle. There is very little metal left to weld to making repairs not possible. Toyota corperate refuses to assist us and we are stuck with a vehicle that is near total failure.
Single Toyota 2010 Fj Cruiser owner. Over the last 10/11 have been really diligent taking care of my truck, unfortunately due to what seems very poor quality steel or treatment of the frame and some parts when was build by Toyota, it has cause severe rust/rotten issue leading not only to significant safety concerns (broken gas tank straps and fuel lines) but also a significant amount of money spend treating the frame and part to prevent further corrosion that could\will eventually lead to complete failure.

Under carriage, is rusting away ! vehicle, only has 97,000 miles on it. Mechanic, said the vehicle is falling apart, with rust. . .
My son was driving home from school when he heard a rattle/bang when he took a corner or went over a bump. He told me about the noise as soon as he got home. We took the fj out for a drive and I heard the noise coming from the driver's side. Upon inspecting the exterior drivers side I found that the left side, rear trailing arm mounting point and a section of the fj's frame, had torn away from the frame. The trailing arms was not floating, unattached. We are very luck that the trailing did not drop while my son was driving home, as it would have been driven into the pavement, possibly causing a catastrophic accident. I have called Toyota corporate, who can provide not solution on how to repair this issue. Again, I am lucky my son was on secondary roads and not the highway and the trailing arm fell to the pavement.
Upon state inspection, severe rust and corrosion was discovered on the frame. Not only did it fail inspection, my mechanic strongly urged me not to drive it, as the rear axle has a possibility of falling out.
My 2007 Fj Cruiser has major problems with rust. This includes being informed today that the frame has holes that have rusted through and the vehicle would not pass inspection. I have already put a lot of money into the vehicle replacing rusted parts including replacing the fuel tank straps last year, parts of the suspension and radiator. This seems excessive damage due to rust and creates an unsafe Toyota product.
The vehicles frame is considerably rusted when taking into account the age and use of the vehicle, it has less than 50k at the time of submission.
My problem my Toyota Fj Cruiser burned 12 am midnight October 18 2020 was parking at front at my house it burned completely in the engine area I want to know what happened. If this electrical problems. I want to know if others vans experiences problems.
It has taken a few years since I keep my Fj Cruiser garaged, but I found a sound mat on the inside of the doors that retain water and cause rust. My problem right now is in the left door (driver's side) and the rust from inside the door has finally made it's way completely through the door. I am attaching photos showing the perforation which is well over 1/8 of an inch deep. I only have 57450 miles on my vehicle due to being overseas in syria, iraq, and afghanistan as a civilian dod war zone pilot so weather and rain have not been an issue while it was garaged. Vehicles are designed to let water in the door then drain through the drain holes at the bottom of the door but Toyota but this sound mat on the inside of the door which causing problems for myself and a few other unfortunate Fj Cruiser owners. Knowing this is a design problem / defect from Toyota, I feel they should cover the repair because this issue it outside of normal use due to it's design. I live inland and salt free down here is florida so road salt or road chemicals cannot be blamed. All I can do for now is fill in the holes and use touch up paint which ruins the appearance overall of my vehicle because it is kept in top notch shape inside and out and this door not only looks bad, but over time will completely rust through costing my hundreds of dollars.
Took the vehicle to a Toyota dealership which stated the frame is dangerous and rusted very badly. They told me to file a complaint since the delaer was not covered under the lemon law.
Rusted frame. The factory trailer hitch failed because of frame rot and dropped a travel trailer to the ground while towing. Luckily it did not cause an accident and I was able to get another vehicle to tow the travel trailer. I am part of a facebook group for Fj Cruiser rusted frame owners. This is a common problem on Fj Cruisers and should have been a recall as Toyota did for similar vehicles of the same years that had the same rusted frame issues.
Condition is continuous: when veh. Is in motion or parked with motor running or motor is not running. . Back door of vehicle canot be unlocked with a key as suggested on page 40 of owners manual. . Or when using wireless remote, or door switch. This condition was first noticed when the vehicle was parked and motor not running. . Driver and passenger doors do work properly with the key. Both side doors work properly using a key as descibed on page 35 of the owners manual. , the glass hatch cannot be opend with a ket as suggested on page 45 of the owners manual, I do not know the cause of this malfunction. ,these conditions are a safety hazzard.
Severe rust on critical suspension components despite frequen undercarriage washing and care. Control arms and tank straps will need to be replaced and mounts welded.
Severe rust on all parts of the frame undercarriage, brake lines, gas tank straps. This issue has been widely reported by fj owners and nothing done by the manufacturer. Truck was never driven through salt water nor is it stored by the water front. I am frightened that in an accident the whole body of the truck will just come off the frame.
My vehicle is getting pretty rusty, even with proper maintenance and cleaning. The frame and suspension components pretty soon are going to become unsafe. I'm not going to be able to drive the truck anymore, the value is still pretty high, it just have 118. 000 miles.
2008 Toyota Fj Cruiser frame rotting from inside and out. All suspension components have been replaced due parts failing because of corrosion that bled over from the frame to include both front steering knuckles, two parts that only ever get replaced in the event of an accident. Several frame supports have corroded from the inside out and are flaking off. Brake components that run along the frame have corroded from the frame to the bracket that holds them to the lines themselves. Cause a slow brake leak over time that eventually resulted in a dangerous near accident situation that was caused by complete immediate lack of brake pressure. Evasive driving and a sound mind avoided a legitimate accident, had to tow the truck to a shop. Unsafe to drive. Frame will not hold up in an accident. 12 year old frame should not be anywhere near this condition. Due to oversights at the manufacturer this frame is now corroding from the inside out.
The frame and suspension pieces on my fj have rusted due to poor coatings and materials used by Toyota.
