2 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/06/2020

While traveling through a highway construction zone my car suddenly became hard to steer, and my speed became greater, tried to (break) decelerate the car began sliding out of control-plowing into the road construction barriers part lodged in front passenger windshield. The car went through the ditch became airborne through a rod iron fence shattered the rear second-row right side window spun out , and came to rest just feet from the some pileings. This is the information of my daughter whom is an out of state college senior and very shaken up from this ordeal, this her statement to the best of my knowledge. Possibly the placement of the 🚧 could have been a contributor, and the uncontrollable acceleration. Vehicle was bought used a year ago. Can you help up learn why?.

3 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 07/26/2020

1 week ago, 7-26-20, my car stalled slightly and then an engine icon appeared. A message appeared for me to visit my dealer. I took it to the Toyota dealer. The light went off as I arrived there. I had to pay for a diagnostic check and they couldn't find anything wrong. I was told to make sure I was using a good grade of gas. Later in the week I got gas at a shell station. The car wouldn't crank at the pump. It kept trying to turn over. I got a message to depress the brake and push ignition. Then it said low brake pressure. I sat there a few minutes and tried again. I finally got it to stay on. The next day I drove around fine for a while with no problem. Then I tried to go back out and it wouldn't crank. It was full of good gas. The engine icon came back on. Then the message about being harder to steer came up. It kept saying depress the brake and push ignition. I tried a few more times and got the message about problems with the Smart key system. I checked the recalls for 2017 Highlanders and noticed there electrical problems. I bought this car used in March 2020.

4 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 07/26/2020

While we were driving, going around a corner the antilock system decided to do it itself. . . And make my vehicle slip sideways. It was very dangerous as it took me from side to side. I have never had this happen before and I don't want it happening again. How do we fix this as fast as possible?.

5 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 07/20/2020

The brake accumulator/actuator is a defective part and Toyota has refused to honor the repair. They manipulated owners by having a warrenty support program with end dates, instead of having a recall on it. Which is why when I researched before I bought, is not listed on car fax. The warranty support was before I purchased vehicle and previously it was either ignored or missed between owners. They have had many of these and get away with it. Right now there is a class action filed in ohio over this same issue with other cars. It is a $3000 dollar part and not a knob on radio. It is a safety issue due to it being part of the braking system. I've seen where the support program said miles didn't matter but when talking to Toyota they say 114,000 miles. The car is a 2006, yeah that's reasonable, even for 2017/18 letter. While driving the vsc alarm system comes on and the braking becomes difficult. The pump has always made a sound but was told by dealer it was the security alarm system making the noise. It happened in 2019 also, the alarm, but repair shop said it was calipers, so paid $800 to have them replaced with pads. Its always made noise but the alarm system started back up again last month. Now with research on my own, I know exactly what it is but Toyota said they sent letter to previous owner and sorry about my luck! this has rendered this vehicle worth $5500, worthless. Cant trade in a vehicle like this and lost my income from delivery with it. I have checked off everything that would apply if it was a recall but since the support program has an end date to get out of Toyota ever being responsible for their defective part, they push it off on owners. I'm just lucky, I have a cdl and good driver and have not had an accident with it. I filed a complaint with Toyota and they just swiped me away as another poor sucker that didn't figure it out before I purchased.

The brake actuator assembly has gone out at 135000 miles. It interfers with braking. The brakes lock up frequently and car will almost hop to a halt. It is quite concerning and scary when it occurs.

8 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2020 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 06/18/2020

Highlander le 2020 car has a big safety issue. When I turn off engine with gear changer in d position the gear goes in n neutral position while still in d position without giving any alert noise. I parked my car in 3rd floor of a public parking where the floor had slop, and turned off engine in d position by mistake and started reading an email in my cellphone without looking outside of car. The car didn't give any alert noise saying that the car is turned off in d position. My wife and son had exited the car and were waiting for me to exit while I was reading my email in my cellphone. I heard my wife and son screaming " stop the car" stop the car" when I looked outside and saw that the car was rolling back towards other parked cars. I stoped the car and turned on engine and moved car forward and shifted the stick to p position. I was really suprised why this car didn't give any alert noise that the car was rolling back when engine was turned off in d position. This issue was going to be a bad disaster for me if my wife and son hadn't screamed to let me know that the car was rolling back on 3rd floor of a public parking. The only alert I noticed in that time was a small pop up on dashboard without any noise. I called Toyota corporation and they said that there is no any problem with my car and that this car doesn't have any safety problem. For sure sooner or later this will be a bad disaster for some car owners of this model. I don't have peace of mind when my wife drives this car with my kids inside. Please solve this big safety issue for me as Toyota corporation doesn't accept this issue as a safety issue. The Toyota dealer service manager said that this problem is software problem and must be reported to Toyota corporation, but corporation says that there is not any problem. Even 1980's or 1990's car when you turn off the engine in d position the car gives noise alert.

9 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/21/2020

Once after parking and then twice while driving on a highway, the check hybrid system light, the vsc light, the check engine light, and the caution light all illuminated and the vehicle lost all power including steering assistance . Each time requiring multiple key turns to restart the vehicle into limp home mode. This vehicle has been repaired once before for a similar issue which occurred while driving up a hill in moderate traffic. The tank is full of fuel, the tires are less than a year old, and the vehicle undergoes regular maintenance(which includes a new battery as the one bought from Toyota had a few dead cells after only a year or two). I've read multiple complaints about this online while searching for the underlying issue and there seems to be a related recall that doesn't include my VIN.

11 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 02/01/2020

Recently we've got a bunch of warning lights on the dashboard of our car indicating a brake system malfunction and urging us to stop the vehicle in a safe location. The brakes were still working and we were able to carefully and safely drive home. After scanning the car for abs error codes and doing a quick online search, I realized that the brake booster pump assembly and actuator assembly failed in our car.

15 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2015 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/12/2020

Our 2015 Highlander steering intermittently locks up and has a complete loss of power. First happened when starting the vehicle and had to sit and start and stop over 15 times and the steering finally came back. We immediately contacted Toyota and they said this vehicle had no recalled parts and there is no problem. When it happened the second time we took it in and they said it had a bad battery and the problem was fixed. We paid a hefty service fee and paid for a really expensive battery. Two days later it happened again and while moving on a city street about 35/40 mph. We got over safely but was so dangerous. Took it back to Toyota and they are telling us the vehicle has no problem and we just need to use it till it happens again and bring it back! if we don't kill ourselves or another motorist! after doing our own research we find our car is doing exactly what the vehicles with the recall are doing but they will not replace the eps system and Toyota is putting us back on the road in a dangerous vehicle. So now we only have one vehicle and struggling to get by. I find it completely unacceptable that Toyota customer relations was of no help and rude on the phone. Now we have bought a $40,000. 00 car we can not drive and be safe on the road with. How can they not help us and fix the problem? we will have to get a second opinion and end up paying more money to fix the problem. Thanks Toyota we will not buy another.

16 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/28/2019

Brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump assembly (problem known to Toyota for this and other models,) failed, leading to dash messages: master warning, abs warning, brake system warning (brake malfunction: stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact a dealer), slip indicator. Brake pedal function seems limited, and dangerous. All warnings come back upon shutting off and restarting vehicle.

17 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/16/2019

Ongoing issue with generation 1 Highlander hybrids and prius from same date ranges. A warranty adjustment has already been issued and ended. The abs brake accumulator gets an internal leak code c1391. Reduced braking, esc, brake and other lights come on. Many of those repaired under warranty are already failing a second time. Vehicle is dangerous to drive since it can be driving perfectly and fail while in motion causing dangerous braking conditions.

18 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/05/2019

First incident occurred in Dec 2019 and then again in Jan 2020. While driving engine lost power and vehicle began lurching forward and back uncontrollably. After pulling over engine shut down. Thankfully we did not cause an accident. Check engine light came on, also said reduced engine power and traction control off. First time dealer said it was bad gas. Second time they tested fuel pump and it was producing 5 psi. Way below 50-60 psi norm. Now our vehicle is parked waiting for Toyota to develop a fix for their fuel pump. No idea how long that will take. Our car is part of the almost 700,000 Toyota recalled. Toyota used to mean quality, not sure any more.

19 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2011 Toyota Highlander

20 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/21/2019

I used the hands free device when talking on the phone while driving, view incoming email mail, the navigation system on the highway. I incurred this problem for several months since purchasing the vehicle in February 2019. On Thursday, November 21, 2019 I had another appointment with dick dyer Toyota in columbia, SC due to my audio seems to have a shortage in it. The audio system keeps turning off. An employee at dick dyer Toyota said that my apple xs max cellular phone is the problem. The male could not tell me when Toyota company updated their electric software. He also mentioned that numerous Highlander owners have incurred the some problems. Later that afternoon, I called Toyota customer service in California and explained to a female customer representation about the audio electric shortage in a 2019 vehicle. Veronica said there is a problem with their software which is a 12. 1 version which is not compatible to apple current software version 13. 2. 3. I explained to her about hand free states and their laws. She mentioned that they were working to fix the problem but have not time frame when the problem will be fix. I have complained three previous times about the audio. Case number - 1911212727.

21 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/30/2019

I sent a letter to Toyota motor sales USA after being refused service at a local dealer to resolve a safety issue, with no reply. While pressing brake when starting I got a couple of error messages that said to contact a Toyota dealer. I did some very detailed research into this problem and what others had encountered. I found the errors would only show when the 12 volt battery was getting low on charge. The brake booster pump is one of the suspect items draining the battery because it continues to run long after the vehicle is parked. Since I don't have the tools to check the current draw on this or if it is even supposed to run long after the vehicle is shut off, I wanted my Toyota dealer to check this. There is a " customer support program notification - zkc" related to this for the brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump assembly. I specifically requested that they check out the electrical component of the brake booster pump even if not covered by warranty. I also told them about the errors only occurring on a low 12 volt battery charge. Their diagnosis showed an error code of poaa6 and only the warning lights and error message in the car display. They not only decided this was not covered by warranty but also ignored my specific request to test the brake system at my expense. No attempt at checking brakes or 12 volt charging system. I was told they would have to open the inverter to check that with the known outcome that this inverter is not repairable but would have to be replaced at a cost of $10,000. . New 12v battery installed. Computers can malfunction if not given the design operating voltage! I have trouble believing that there is a "hybrid battery voltage system isolation fault" due to the fact that the on board computer does not report this message when operating on a fully charged 12 volt system - in other words operating under normal conditions.

22 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2019 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/29/2019

Me and my family were leaving a hotel in tarrytown NY. I parked the car: Toyota Highlander 2019 outside, helped my wife and 21-month baby into the back seat and had to put something in the trunk but it was locked. In that moment the car was in park with the engine running; the ground was not steep at all: 5-10 degrees the most. I took out the key from ignition to go open the trunk with the button from the remote. Suddenly the car started rolling backwards with my wife and kid in the back seat. There was a slope few feet away from where I parked and the angle became about 40 degrees and it picked up speed quickly. I rushed in (drivers door was lucky open and flapping around), at the last moment was able to press the break but we still hit another car with people inside. I am the only one with visual scars and bruises on my left leg from trying to climb in the car, but my wife felt pain in her lower back the day after the crash. There were witnesses and most likely a camera, since it was by the front entrance of a major hotel. From reading and researching on this matter I suspect it is a defect in the parking pawl (the piece inside the transmission that holds the car in park). This is an absolute manufacturers defect. I saw here on the NHTSA website that a person from NJ filed a complaint about the exact same matter with the same car: Toyota Highlander 2019 (NHTSA id number: 11245263), just a month ago so this is definitely not an isolated case. Please take action. This vehicle should be recalled ASAP before someone gets seriously injured or worse!.

23 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/13/2019

At Toyota, we are dedicated to providing vehicles of outstanding quality and value. As part of our continual efforts to ensure customer satisfaction, Toyota would like to advise you of a voluntary customer support program that has been initiated for your vehicle. Toyota has received reports regarding certain internal malfunctions of the brake actuator assembly in certain 2008-2010 model year Highlander hybrid vehicles. In these reports, customers have noted various brake system related warning lamps are illuminated. This customer support program provides coverage as it applies to the brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump assembly. The specific condition covered by this program is for certain internal malfunctions of the brake actuator assembly. If the condition is verified, the vehicle will be repaired with new brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump assembly under the terms of this customer support program. If the following warning lamps are illuminated, the vehicle may be experiencing a concern with the brake actuator assembly and brake booster pump assembly that is covered by this customer support program. The part is back ordered and they don't know when they will be available. I just picked the vehicle for the dealership and they will notify me when it's available. I'm still driving the vehicle. This has been going on since I first filed 7 months ago. It's funny has the part is available to purchase, but it's on back order for my vehicle. This is not right. Looks like I'm going to have to wait again. Thanks for your assistance in this matter.

24 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

This is for a 2009 Toyota Highlander hybrid limited with about 142000 miles. The vehicle has not been in any accidents and is not abused in any way. All maintenance are up to date with the major timing kit replaced most recently at about 140000. While driving the vehicle on normal roads (sometimes highway, sometime city roads), I get three warnings that pop up at the center screen between the air vents; 1) check abs, 2) check brake system, and 3) brake malfunction. For the first two warnings, it is followed by "have your vehicle checked by dealer. " but, for the third warning, it is accompanied by "stop the vehicle in a safe place immediately and contact dealer. " these warnings also correspond to three lights that pop up by the speedometer; 1) vsc, 2) abs, and 3) brake. The lights stay on for two to three days at a time and then will go away without any reasonable explaination. This happens about every other week. I was unable to bring it to a dealership when the light is on as I live very far away from the dealership. When I call and describe the warnings, I am told that this may be a problem with the actuator and it is common. The dealer estimated the cost to be around $3500. I did a quick search online and find that this is a common problem among same generation Highlanders. I should not have to pay for this and the manufacturer needs to get the vehicle right. I feel unsafe driving this vehicle with the uncertainty of being able to stop safely when necessary. I understand that Toyota had a recall on the brake system for the prius and camry, but did not include the Highlander. They should have since this is a safety problem that is common with the first and second generation Highlanders. Please get Toyota to take responsibility before an accidents occurs. Brakes are an important safety feature that should not be compromised.

25 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2017 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/02/2019

My Toyota Highlander would not go into park. The SUV lunged forward over curbing and into building. Then went violently into reverse and into a uncontrollable spin. Then the SUV went violently into drive and jumping over a curbing and into a ditch and was sitting on top of a natural gas line. During this whole time I was pressing the brake and pushing the ignition switch trying to turn off the engine. This was done in a parking lot as I was trying to park.

26 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2011 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/01/2019

There is a problem with my power steering wheel, it's stiff and I unable to control it when on the road. When driving on the freeway with high speed, the steering wheel sway left or right and I unable to control it back to straight. Also, when making a turn the steering wheel not reflexes, fast enough for me to make a turn. For instance, whenever I make a right turn and then try to straighten the vehicle back to straight, the steering wheel does not reflex back enough that it leads me to hit the curb damaging front wheel rim. Since, the problem keeps on occurring, as I get worried I took it to the dealership repair shop twice within the period of 2 months. The first time, I took it in the mechanic states that probably has a problem with the alignment, so I paid the for the performance. And it didn't help at all. Then the second time, I took it back to the dealership repair shop again, I told them that the alignment didn't help at all and also I specify that the problem is the steering wheel then I left the vehicle the whole day for the repair shop to fix it. Later, when I went to pick it up, they stated that they corrected the cradle and do the alignment 4 times and I took the car out home. The vehicle still had the problem that I had when I took the car in to repair, then I drove back to the dealership and told the mechanic. Then the mechanic drove the car with me in the car, and he told me the problem is the electric steering wheel and there no way he could do anything about it. Then I asked him if I took it to any other shop will that help. He said no, there no shops that could fix it. He also said that I just have to put up with it. But, it is my life or ever my family members life on the road. So, I'm really worried and I don't have money to replace with a new car right now. The car has never been in an accident before, I bought it new from the dealership.

31 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2016 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/17/2019

Twice the awd system has failed. 12/28/2016 and March 17/ 2019. The check engine light comes on the the 4wd shuts down along with the trac and vehicle stability system. Under both times the car was being operated in extreme weather conditions of deep heavy snow, slush, ice and mud. The vehicle will not allow the wheels to spins enabling me to keep moving in the hazardous conditions. I needed to shift between 1, 2 and 3 gears to engage the higher revs to spins the tire to keep the car from getting stuck or sliding off the road. In both instances I was in remote, isolated areas with no help and no cell service. The December 2016 instances was repaired by a Toyota dealer in omaha. Dealer could not readily understand how the problem initiated.

32 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2014 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/15/2019

My complaint concerns the safety of the wellbeing of myself and passengers in my vehicle. The rear automatuc door lock on my passenger side of my Highlander went out first. Then the driver door at any given time may or may not open. Not even with the key. I have to go to the passenger side and climb over and unlock the door and go back around to get in. My concern is being in a wreck and the door not opening. Not being able to get a child out of the carseat in the back because the door won't open. Yes. It may be the actuators and I have read the expensive reviews of getting those fixed only to find it happens again over and over. My other complaint is the bluetooth phone system will freeze up and you have to pull over and restart the car to unfreeze it. The system completely shuts down continuously. I have read reviews on this also and Toyota is aware of both of these complaints but have had no recalls to date. Please help!.

I was driving straight on the main road coming to a stop light. The vehicle would not stop after pressing on the brakes several times. There are several lights on the dash:brakes, traction control, 2 yellow exclamation marks one inside a triangle and the ,abs. The mechanic is saying the brake actuator is faulty and needs to replaced.

34 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/19/2018

The brake actuator for the abs system failed and needed to be replaced. This was and is a known potential problem by the Toyota company as a result of many Toyota owners replacing their vehicle actuators due to failure but no recalls have been activated and available for my vehicle as of this current date. I fortunately did not get into an accident as a result but stop use of the vehicle and had it repaired immediately by a Toyota dealership at my own expense. This was a very costly expense I incurred both in the actuator part and the labor to replace it. The actuator affected the brake system of my vehicle and is a major safety issue.

35 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2018 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 07/07/2018
