47 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2005 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 10/03/2016

Anti-skid computer has gone bad, activating skid control constantly ( cutting power and applying brakes ) all the time while driving in warm dry weather. Many times you can not even pull out in traffic safely, it cuts power once you start to move. Very dangerous. After extensive testing by both independents and the dealer, it has been determined that the computer (anti-skid ecu) has a defect. Known issue. Kelly blue book values the car at $8500 (private sale) and this repair will be over $2500. Vehicle has 51,000 miles on it. Belongs to my elderly mother, who is on a fixed income. Driving the car is extremely dangerous. Come to a stop (light, cross roads, etc). Then go, it activates and cuts all power to the drive train. You are just sitting there, and can not move the vehicle. If you are merging, or crossing traffic, you are now in a dangerous situation.

48 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/26/2016

I was driving about 15 mph on a city streetand the vsc indicator light came on and the vehicle started breaking on its own. A loud scrapping sound was heard. It was about 70degrees and sunny and the car thought I was going down a slippery slope. I stopped the vehicle. Every time I got above 8-10 mph the light would come on and the care would start breaking becoming unable to drive.

49 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/24/2016

In Feb 2005 while doing about 30 mph the vsc light came on and started braking, on it's own, to the right making it almost impossible to drive. The next morning the car was towed to the Toyota dealer. The car displayed no codes and they said that they had calibrated the steering angle sensor. We had no further problems until Mar 24, 2016. This time the vsc indicator came on at about 40 mph. If I slowed down to about 20 mph the indicator would go off. We were able to drive the car home but the car braked, on it's own, several times. We have an appointment with the Toyota dealer. I'm afraid that the expense to repair it may come close to what the car is worth. Nhtsa needs to wake up and investigate this issue. It's been going on for a long time. This problem could result in a serious accident if it occurrs at highway speeds. I can't imagine what would happen if the car brakes on it's own at 75 mph.

50 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2015 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/30/2016

Driving forward into parking space. Just about stopped. Pressed break. Car lurched forward at hight speed suddenly, causing car to jump curb at top of parking spot and careen down hill (onto side walk). Car out of control for about 2 seconds. Was able to break in hill, which prevented me from hitting car parked perpendicular on street below. Bottom of car scraped curb when car jump curb and lurched forward. Bottom front bumper scraped. There was an icy patch at top of parking space. It seems like when wheels rolled on top of icy patch, the car lurched forward. Car might have accidentally been on cruise control at the time.

51 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 11/06/2015

Traction control came on during normal driving.

52 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/05/2015

Driving vehicle when warning lights for abs and skid control came on. Check vsc system in dash. When brake is applied right front tire locks and causes vehicle to spin. Slow speed is the only reason for no accident. Took vehicle to dealer and was told "brake accuator " electronics had failed and needed to be replaced for $3800. Research shows this is an issue on the Highlander, the Lexus and the camry so why have the Highlanders not been included in the recall?.

53 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/01/2015

Door sensors show door open, door chimes, and interior lights flash when in motion driving over light bump on all roads, highway or city streets. And/or when driving from the street into driveway at 1mph at all times as up over slight curb. Happens when I shift the gears into motion. Started in sept. 2015 to current date.

54 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2002 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/14/2014

Bought this vehicle in 2002. A year later noticed that the idle controller had problem. When started the engine in the morning, the idle went down very low and the engine shut down automatically. At first it happened not frequently. Past two years I took to a dealer for mayor tuneup, the symptom still resisted. Told the dealer and there was no actions at all. Now it happens more frequently. Usually if it happens, step on the gas peddle ( over 2k rpm) for a few seconds. Sometimes the idle returns to normal; but most of the times, the idle sets very low. I think the idle control for this model should be recalled.

55 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2013 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 06/20/2014

The complaint has to do with computer systems on this vehicle. Some of the complaint is convenience, but worrisome because other systems seem to be involved as well. The computer screen has always been slow/hesitent, with various "glitches". Vehicle has gps mapping screen which occassionally "disconnects" and resets to blank screen. The bluetooth and other systems have also "disconnected" and couldn't be reset until the vehicle was stopped and turned off. The headlights sometimes do not shut off, day/night doesn't work properly. Have had occassional problems with door locks not working as they should. Never know when and which systems will be affected. I have also filed a complaint about intermitent non-acceleration issues, which maybe related.

56 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/30/2014

We have a 2010 Toyota Highlander and the dome lights turn on & the door ajar alarm sounds while turning left & sometimes while turning right. This has also happened when rolling up or down the passengers side window. Took it to dealer & they could not diagnosed or repair it.

57 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2004 Toyota Highlander

59 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 02/17/2014

I was backing out of my driveway, stopped waited for traffic, backed up, got stuck on a small pile of snow, left rear tire started to spin I pulled forward and back again the traction light came on, had no traction. It happened again, backing out of my driveway.

60 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2009 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 08/03/2013

While driving down the expressway with the family (50mph), check engine light and traction control suddenly turn on and flicker on and off randomly. Engine power hesitates. At the stoplight, check engine light continues to turn on, and off randomly, as well as traction control light. Engine appears to be stalling at times, and rpm bounces between 500-900. Acceleration when pressing against gas pedal results in uneven acceleration. Pulled vehicle off to the side, turned engine off, and examined vehicle. Examined vehicle and do not see anything suspicious. Turned vehicle back on, and check engine light with traction control off. Moments later, lights turn back on. Limped vehicle back to residence via local roads. Continued to experience intermittent on/off check engine light and traction control. After arriving at residence, parked vehicle and performed additional examination. Noticed burning smell at rear brake shoes, possibly from traction control holding on to brakes. Will bring car to dealership on 08/05/13 first thing in the morning.

61 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2007 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 03/12/2013

I was driving and without any warning the car shutdown down, the car controls would not respond. The car continued till it lost momentum stopped, there was no/or very little braking and steering assistance/control. ***I called Toyota and reported the problem, no assistance was provided*** the dashboard flashed lights, the vsc, awd and other lights came on. Fyi - the car has been regularly maintained. There are numerous controls on these similar issues, vsc awd ecu etc, but there seems to be no acknowledgement from Toyota.

62 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/29/2012

The contact owns a 2006 Toyota Highlander. As soon as the vehicle was started, the vsc light and check engine warning indicator illuminated simultaneously and remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but could not be diagnosed. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The VIN was invalid. The approximate failure mileage was 240,000.

63 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/08/2012

Vsc, tracking and abs lights come on when driving. Sometimes on as soon as I reverse in the morning. Used to go off if I turned car off and restarted. Sometimes doesn't come on until I am almost home from work (30 miles) sometimes the brakes feel off and not gripping. Had brakes inspected and everything fine.

64 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2006 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 04/18/2012

Complaint: 2006 base Highlander, fwd, 4 cylinders. Brake system (vsc, trac off, abs & brake) and tpms lights on, disabling safety features. 1)tpms flashing light. Issue may have been in-process since day 1. It regularly came on, reset by dealers and eventually showed us how to reset ourselves. 2)brake system lights. All (4) came on, diagnosed as left rear wheel sensor. Dealer quoted cost: $1000. Replacement didn¿t work, wound up replacing wheel hub assembly pigtail. Lasted two (2) weeks, re-diagnosed as abs pump/control module assembly. Dealer quoted cost: $2500. While this itself is ridiculous, the repair costs would exceed 1/8th (13%) the cost of the vehicle new! now, in 2014, it¿s approximately â½ (50%) of the current vehicles value. This issue has recently resulted in screeching to a halt in dangerous traffic. It essentially negates the star safety system features, for various environmental and driving conditions. This issue cannot be ignored any longer, since it¿s the topic on numerous web site forums and inquiries and even salvaged used parts are being sold by many sites for this problem. Recompense: remuneration of expenses to date and future repairs to correct this problem is requested. Review of TSB and/or investigation into recall campaign to fix all affected vehicles.

65 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 02/28/2012

Upon starting my car, the vsc off, check engine, and abs lights remained lit. Acceleration was slow and rough, and the general engine feel was wrong. I stopped car and restarted with no effect. While driving, the lights extinguished for a moment, and at that point performance temporarily improved - this caused a surge in acceleration. But the same lights came on a moment later and performance, once again, failed. Fortunately I was not in traffic when the surge occurred.

66 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2010 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 06/10/2011

Vehicle accelerated of its own accord. On several succeeding occasions this Toyota Highlander has accelerated of its own accord. Vehicle has never crashed and after pulling over and placing vehicle in park, vehicle did not continue to accelerate. This Toyota has been serviced 3-4 times for this problem, including a specialist from another state who traveled to baton rouge to make a thorough inspection involving 2-3 hours. Verdict was no visible or other problem detected. Two months ago there was another recall on this vehicle and Toyota made the repair in the computer. Last week on may 20, 2014 I received another recall regarding this vehicle. This vehicle involves a steering column assembly containing a spiral cable with electrical connections involving the air bag. Should the driver air bag become deactivated, it could cause it not to deploy in the event of a crash which could increase the risk of injury to the driver in certain types of crashes. The remedy is currently unavailable and Toyota will send a second owner notification letter when the remedy is available. Despite numerous letters and repeated telephone calls to Toyota, I have not received any assistance to purchase a new Toyota Highlander that does not encompass these types of safety recalls. I chose not to join a group lawsuit because I knew this would be futile. Nonetheless, I am considering looking into hiring an attorney to pursue the replacement of this vehicle. Thank you for your attention.

67 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 05/07/2011

2008 Toyota Highlander had a new set of tires put on it 6 months ago and 9,000 miles later the rear tires were bald to the coords to a point it was not able to be driven. The car appears to have a problem with alignment or stabalization as the car, even with new tires and an inspection by the dealership was undrivable in snow or heavy rain even at low speeds. The rear end is very unstable in this car.

68 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 01/13/2011

Dealer claimed " this is an electrical problem. Access and traced all related wiring to inside the fuse/relay panel. Found something had chewed and shorted out the wiring" they would not provide any proof. I notified Toyota motors and got no help from them.

69 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2008 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 12/29/2010

The sensor lights for abs and vsc have gone on and off intermittently on my 2008 Toyota Highlander. Sometimes the brakes engaged the skid control, braking capability is lost and other times the speed needle does not gage properly. The system was inspected by Toyota, who indicated it was due to damage to the sensor from a rope. Toyota supposedly replaced the sensor and they stayed off for a few weeks, but continue to come back. My vehicle still has less than 50,000 miles, and Toyota is again telling me they have to look into the problem.

70 Electronic Stability Control problem of the 2003 Toyota Highlander

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

This car has been dealer maintained from day one. Last year, we began noticing an odd, loud drumming sound occurring along with resistance to acceleration in slow speed situations. This included parking lots, stopping for a left turn within an intersection, and every other situation where we needed to maneuver at low speed. The vehicle would vibrate, the engine would not accelerate, and sometimes the car would lurch within a turn. It became alarmingly severe and the periods between incidents began to shorten. While still intermittent, we began to be concerned and took it to the NY dealer who had been servicing the car since it was new. We reported exactly what I have written above, including the comment that the anti-skid light would come on on the dash when this happened. After charging us over $900 for fluid replacement and reattaching a vacuum hose, we were told we had no problem, that the noise was normal. It occurred again when we left the dealers lot. The pavement was dry. After a few weeks of increasing difficulty we took it to a different dealer, to be told that our tires were worn. We replaced the tires, and the problem persisted on either wet or dry pavement. With a cross-country trip coming up, we took the car to an aamco, who test drove it and said we had an abs brake problem. They kept it for three days, and charged us $400 having found a piece of rusted metal they believed was preventing one of the wheel sensors from making constant contact. It felt better, but the problem began to show up again in a couple of days. We could not put the trip off, and drove the car cross country, having the problem re-occur in almost every low speed situation, when we got to new mexico we made an appointment with the dealer who sold us the car. They said it was unsafe to drive and after four days, told us the abs ecu was malfunctioning. It cost $2178 to replace. The replaced component is a sealed electronic module with no moving parts. It should have lasted.
